Voamoko Type-C Wireless Numeric Pad with USB Hub review

REVIEW – Do you wish your laptop had a real number pad on it? There are definitely times where I’ve had a project pop up during a trip where a full size keyboard was nowhere to be found. Voamoko’s Type-C Wireless Numeric Pad with USB Hub might just be the solution that you can keep in your bag without taking up much space.

What is it?

The Type-C Wireless Numeric Pad with USB Hub is a portable number pad that you can use with your laptop for the feel of a full size numeric keyboard without the bulk. The built-in USB hub adds some needed backwards compatibility to newer computers.

What’s in the box?

  • Numeric key pad
  • USB cable (Type-C to Type-C)
  • User manual

Hardware specs

Support: Windows/macOS/iOS/Android (Some shortcut keys are not supported on macOS & iOS)
– Keyswitch life & response: 500 million strokes times & 5 millisecond
Design: 34 key aluminum keypad
USB hub: Two USB-A 3.0 ports (when connected with USB-C cable)
Wireless: Bluetooth 3.0 for keypad only functionality
– Controls: Power switch, BT pairing button and LED indicator
Power: Input of 5V at 100mA, Output at 900mA per port
Duration: 2 hours to charge, 50 hours use, ~2 months standby
Dimensions: ~ 5.5″ x 4.5″ and 0.5″ at top of the ramped design

Design and features

Voamoko’s numeric pad was clearly designed to aesthetically match MacBooks from Apple. It’s available in both silver and space gray so you can complete your kit. It’s also compatible with PCs running Windows and iOS devices.

The solution provides a true number pad for anyone craving that extended keyboard feel that’s missing from almost all laptops. Because it’s Bluetooth you can move it exactly where you need it.

The bottom is plastic which helps with wireless signals and the four rubber feet keep it from moving around.

It also adds two USB-A ports when connected with the included USB-C to C cable, which makes it easier to continue using any peripherals you haven’t upgraded to USB-C.

A power switch and a paring button can be found on the right side where you can see the tapered design very similar to the Apple Magic Trackpad.

Setup

First you’ll need to connect the keypad’s USB-C cable and connect it to your computer or a wall adapter.

You’ll see a solid red light at the back of the keypad confirming it’s charging. Allow about 2 hours for a full charge. Note that you will not be able to use the keypad until you setup Bluetooth.

Slide the switch so that green is showing (instead of red) and then press the small round button to place it in pairing mode. On the back you’ll now see a flashing blue light next to the red light. On you computer open your Bluetooth preference panel, look for “Bluetooth Keypad” and click connect.

Performance

I use a standing desk and a large monitor at work with Apple’s Magic Trackpad 2 and full-size Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad. It’s a great setup as I work in spreadsheets and gantt programs regularly. The funny part is that I’m actually not at my desk for the majority of the day. When I’m in meeting rooms and elsewhere I’m limited to the numbers along the top of my Macbook Pro. Definitely works, but it’s just not the same as having a number pad when you’re really trying to enter numbers quickly and accurately.

The Voamoko Numeric Pad straight up solves this problem. It’s lightweight, small and fits in a back pocket or between your hand and the laptop you’re lugging around anyway. Just place it next to your computer and switch it on.

When placed directly next to the right side of my 15″ laptop it’s lays out just like the keys on my Magic Keyboard.

The USB hub is a great feature as you likely have some hard drives, peripherals or that USB-A to lighting cable that came with your iPhone that you connect to your computer with some frequency. It’s a welcome benefit that doesn’t add volume to the keypad in any negative way. It does mean that you need to keep that cable handy or always hanging out of the back of the keypad.

That included cable is short (only x inches) with straight connectors. I connect it to the right side of my laptop since I’m right handed. Does that mean that this could be a great solution for left handed users? As “I’m am not left-handed” (Princess Bride sword fighting scene playing in my head now), I can’t speak to if that would actually be a benefit since you’re likely used to standard key layouts. But back to my previous point, connecting it to the right side ports pushes it further away from my laptop to a point that it starts to feel awkward.

This is either not an issue at all, or an easily remedied problem. If you are only using the number pad functionality and charge the keypad when not it use, you won’t run into this issue. If you want the USB hub functionality, a cable with a 90º connector on the computer end of the cable, or just a longer cable that can reach around to ports on the left side will solve the problem.

As for the actually hub functionality, the USB 3.0 seems to work great. I connected a 3.0 Seagate drive through the keypad and moved a large file (1.36GB) from my computer to the drive in about 10 seconds.

There also seems to be no issue using both USB ports simultaneously. As with any hard drives, make sure your cables are fully pushed in and try not to bump things around while working with them. They all tend to disconnect way too easily.

I was also able to easily pair it with my iPad Pro. I’m not sure I’ll be using it in that scenario very often, but it’s great to know that it can. Finally, there is no backlighting on the keypad which is to be expected, but just wanted to make sure you know.

What I like

  • Number pad with my laptop!
  • Lightweight and low profile
  • Wireless in number pad only mode
  • USB 3.0 hub when used with cable

What I’d change

  • Longer cable to reach to far side of laptop

Final thoughts

If you miss having a numeric pad when you’re on your laptop, this is a great solution. If you need a USB-A 3.0 ports on your laptop, this is a great solution. Either of those alone plus the solid build quality, portability and price puts the on the Voamoko Type-C Wireless Numeric Pad with USB Hub on the recommended list for me.

Gotek’s Wireless Rollable Keyboard provides you with function and entertainment on the go!

CROWDFUNDING NEWS – As an iPad fan and as someone who uses my iPad every day and for hours each day, any accessory that will add to the functionality and enjoyment is worth it if it works well. I have several accessories like USC-C multi-port attachments and USB-C hubs, and also a few keyboard cases and stand-alone keyboards.

A couple of days ago ai came across the Wireless Rollable Keyboard with BT Speaker by Gotek. This device seems like it could be the perfect accessory and it is universal, durable, lightweight and compact. It is designed to be used with your mobile devices including your iPad, iPhone, Android and Windows-based tablets (including Amazon Fire), and all the devices can be connected via a single touch. It has a built-in stand that folds out to support smartphones and tablets up to 10″. While its current design specs do not seem to say that it can support the iPad Pro 12.9”, it looks like it just might.

The built-in Bluetooth speaker can be used together or separately from the keyboard and it also includes a built-in microphone that adds versatility including using it for phone calls. It is made from an aircraft-grade aluminum alloy that should keep it durable.

If you would like more information on this Wireless Rollable Keyboard with BT Speaker you can head over to the Indiegogo page and check it out. It can be purchased for $99, although it seems to be out-of-stock at the moment.

Bluetooth Aluminum Number Keypad review

REVIEW – As a gadget nerd, my gadget obsession is very apparent when you look at any of my workstations. I usually have as many devices as possible connected for my work process, some that make my process more effective and efficient, and some just because they are cool. There are also others that only met the criteria for temporary use, whether it was because they lost their cool factor, their usefulness, or were upstaged by a better model or version. This Bluetooth Aluminum Number Keypad just entered the fray. Let’s see which pile it ends up in!

What is it?

This Bluetooth Aluminum Number Keypad has 34-keys that allow for multiple shortcuts that make it a convenient device to enhance your productivity. It is made of aluminum and is lightweight yet solid. It also features an ergonomic tilt design and pairs with your apple magic keyboard and Bluetooth devices.

The bottom of the keypad is a flat surface with 4 rubber feet, one at each corner, to prevent it from sliding while in use.

On the back edge of the keypad there from left to right, there is the LED status indicator that shows when the keypad is charging (lights red) and when it is in pairing mode (lights blue), the micro USB port for charging, the Bluetooth pairing button and the on/off switch.

Performance

This keyboard is very easy to install, and only takes a couple of minutes from unboxing to being connected. It pairs very easily and is immediately fully operational. The keypad functions much as you would expect with the numeric part working as numeric keypads do, and the additional function keys adding flexibility and efficiency to your workflow process. The following illustration shows the capability of some of the functions keys.

The picture below shows the keyboard connected to my Windows 7 laptop. It works nicely with full functionality.

While this keypad is not designed for use with IOS, it does connect easily via Bluetooth to my iPad Pro, and it does have some functionality like search and typing numbers within the message app. I am sure that I will find more functionality as I continue to play around with it.

As shown below, I was able to connect the keypad to my MacBook Pro. Once again, the pairing process was easy and like with the PC, the functions worked as expected.

When I first added the keypad to my MacBook Pro it showed up as a MAC address and then as a Bluetooth keypad once connected.

What I like

  • The build quality
  • That is it lightweight
  • That I can use it on multiple platforms
  • The functionality

What can be improved

  • It does what it is supposed to do so I am ok with it

Final thoughts

The Bluetooth Aluminum Number Keypad is a nice addition to your workstation if you have a need for it and if it fits into your process. It is lightweight and yet well built. The keys are soft and I would prefer a different clicking action, but that is a personal preference. I use the shortcut keys quite frequently, but I still seem to end up on the numeric keypad of my main keyboard when using the number keys. This is more out of habit. Regardless, I like this keypad.

ROCCAT Vulcan 120 AIMO mechanical keyboard review

REVIEW – I have been using my old ROCCAT keyboard for a few years now, and despite checking out several other keyboards in the past, I keep going back to my old faithful. A new challenger has appeared, this time from ROCCAT themselves with their Vulcan 120 AIMO mechanical keyboard. With its smaller size and fully customizable RGB lighting, will it be able to dethrone it’s predecessor? Let’s find out.

What is it?

The ROCCAT Vulcan 120 AIMO is a gaming keyboard that is stylish and easy to use.

Hardware specs

  • ROCCAT Titan Switches
  • 1.8mm Actuation Points with 3.6mm Travel Distance
  • Ultra-light key-caps
  • RGB customizable to each key with 16.8 million color choices
  • 18.1″ x 9.25″ x 1.25″ in size

What’s in the box?

In the box you’ll find the owners manual, ROCCAT Vulcan 120 mechanical keyboard, and removable magnetic palm rest.

Design and features

I already had the ROCCAT swarm software installed, and it detected my keyboard when I plugged it in. You can plug and play without the software or download it from their website to customize the colors, key bindings, gaming profiles, and more.

Because I love colorful things, I customized the keyboard to exactly the color scheme I wanted. Each key can be customized with color, intensity, and effect. As an Overwatch player, I had to make sure my “Q” button had an effect, while the rest of the keys stayed a solid color. When I put my computer to sleep at night, I was happy to see that the lights turned off.

The keyboard, without the palm rest, is about the same size as most standard keyboards. There’s not a lot of excess on the sides, which is nice, because it makes my desk look less cluttered. Adding the palm rest to the bottom adds a little bit to the size, but it is much more manageable than my previous keyboard.

One thing that I would improve with this keyboard is the palm rest and how it attaches to the keyboard. Most of the time, when my palms are against it, it stays in place, but if I press down a little too hard where it hangs slightly over the edge of the desk, it will pop up easily. I feel that if there was a little stronger magnet that attaches it to the keyboard, it would stay in place. Is it a game breaker? No, but it can be annoying during an intense gaming moment.

The keys feel much different than my old keyboard. They do not have the smooth glide that my old one does, but they do have a nice tactile feel when you press each key down. I knew when each key was pressed. Each press of the key was also a tiny bit quicker, which I tested by putting the keyboards side by side and pressing the keys at the same time.

While my gaming hasn’t improved due to the keyboard, it certainly hasn’t gotten worse. I experienced no issues with multiple key presses, keys not registering, or key presses being slow to register. Typing is just as easy as it was on the previous keyboard. The click each key makes when typing is about as loud as most other mechanical keyboards that I have tried. It may annoy someone trying to sleep in the same room as the keyboard while in use, but it shouldn’t annoy them if they are on their computer as well.

Another thing I like about the Vulcan 120 AIMO is the volume/multimedia wheel. Yes, I can press FN and use the number keys to control volume, but it is just so much quicker this way. The location they added it, on the top right, also is out of the way yet easy to access if needed. I only used it for volume controls, but pressing the FX button next to it offers access to the multimedia functions if desired.

The aluminum top plate gives the keyboard an overall sturdy feel. It has resisted/hidden dust quite well compared to the black plastic areas. The palm rest is also made of quality plastic since I have tested it by it dropping on the ground several times on accident. There are rubber pieces on the bottom of the keyboard to prevent it from sliding around and it worked well. Also, on the top of each side there is a flip-up foot that is a little wider than some of the other keyboards I’ve tried out, and I prefer this because not once has it accidentally flipped down when moving the keyboard around.

What I like

  • Very easy/quick to press keys
  • Dedicated volume controls on the keyboard
  • Customizable colors on each key
  • Easy to set up and use

What needs to be improved

  • The magnetic wrist rest needs a stronger magnet.

Final thoughts

Overall, I really liked the ROCCAT Vulcan 120 AIMO mechanical keyboard. It worked great for both gaming and everyday use and is customized to my own style. Each key gives a light click when pressed, and it does not seem as loud as some of my previous keyboards. Alas, it has dethroned its old ancestor, and I will be sticking with this one in the future. If you are in the market for a fully customizable keyboard, the ROCCAT Vulcan 120 AIMO is one I would recommend taking a look at.

The Delux Designer may be just the right tool for Designers and Editors!

As long as I have been working as a photographer and filmmaker, I have continuously kept an “eye out” for innovative devices that add function and ease to my workflow, and especially to my editing workflow. Over the years, I have tried many devices all with their own positive and negatives, including some that integrated easily, and some that introduced caveats that were not worth the trouble.

Recently, I have been intrigued by a product that is on Kickstarter, that should be done with funding very soon and ready for production.

The Delux Designer is a one-handed keyboard that is being touted by the creators as the Ultimate Tool for Designers to boost work efficiency. It is compatible with 9 major software applications including Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, CAD, 3D, Autodesk Maya, etc. It is also compatible with Wacom.

If you are as interested in the Delux Designer as I am, head over to the Delux website to remain updated on this product which has been selling (pre-order) on Kickstarter for $59. Shipping is scheduled to begin in July 2018.
