Belt buckles that James Bond could use if he had Oprah’s bank account

NEWS – Yes, this is a belt buckle. I know it looks more like… well… I am not really sure what it looks like. But trust me, it’s a belt buckle for the very VERY rich. How rich? I’m not sure because I can’t find any up to date pricing. I found a 5 year old article from 2014 that mentioned $400,000. Yes, that’s a 4 followed by a lot of zeros.

Roland Iten design and makes these luxury belt buckles because he felt there needed to be a better way to adjust the tightness of the belt when you sit. To solve that problem, he created a collection of buckles that feature some crazy mechanics made of expensive materials as well as precious gems. Check out this video which shows how the buckles work.

You can learn more about these incredible belt buckles and other insanely priced gear that you will never own by visiting Roland Iten.

It’s a “party in your pants”, or rather around your pants, with the Hidden Flap Belt

Hyddin has developed a Hidden Flap Belt in which the flap is stored on the inside of the belt or behind the belt. It may not be high tech, but it is a cool idea. Having the flap hidden ensures a slimmer profile and a tidier, more professional look. The belt is currently a Kickstarter campaign that will end on October 10. This is an all-or-nothing campaign, but no worries, they have already met their fundraising goal.

They have two types of belts available: the web belt (made from high-quality polyester) and the leather belt.

All of the belts have angle cut ends to “make them easier to tuck behind the belt.”  The web belts have added reinforcement with “ribbon finished holes” and come in solid colors or come with patterns.

The leather belts come in black or brown leather.

All belts are 1.5″ in width and come in different lengths to accommodate your size (30″ – 38″ long or custom made according to your needs). A single web belt is $35 and a single leather belt is $59. After pledging, you will have to wait for the campaign to end at which time you will be sent a survey where you will select the style(s) and size(s) of your belt(s). If this interests you, head over to the Hidden Flap Belt Kickstarter page to select your type of pledge.

Gosh, it’s simple ideas like this that make me say, “Now, why didn’t I think of that?”

Condor GT Cobra belt review

REVIEW – In my illustrious career, I’ve had EMT training and worked in a certain three-letter Federal agency, so “tactical” style clothing isn’t unfamiliar to me. This one from Condor caught my eye because it has that Cobra-style buckle, and is 100% non-metallic. Why is this interesting?

What is it?

The Condor GT Cobra Belt is a lightweight, two-layer belt with a quick release buckle.

Hardware specs

– 1½” nylon webbing (3000lbs tensile strength)
– Genuine COBRA® buckles by AUSTRIALPIN™(500lbs tensile strength)
– Three rows of stitching to increase belt stiffness
– Hook and loop secure belt end
– Made in the USA

S:    42″ Long, Waist 30 – 34
M:   48″ Long, Waist 36 – 40
L:   54″ Long, Waist 42 – 46

Comes in Black, Tan, Coyote Tan

What’s in the box?

Not much of a box, but you do get the belt in a plastic bag.

Design and features

The most distinctive feature is the Cobra buckle. Let’s see how this works.

The Cobra buckle consists of two halves that are released when you squeeze the two tabs. It makes a nice, solid “click” sound when you close the buckle. It is important to note that you will probably not be able to thread the belt through your belt looks fully assembled. The buckle is about 2-1/8″ wide. To thread the belt, you’ll need to remove the male end of the buckle first. It was an extra step at first, but the ease of unbuckling made up for the initial step.

The loose end of the belt is held secure against your waist via hook and loop (“velcro”). I’ve had other belts like this that require belt loops or belt keepers to prevent stray ends from flopping around. Not the case here!

Here’s the belt on my pants. Note how the width of the buckle is unlikely to fit through most belt loops.

What I like

Most of the Cobra buckles I see are metallic. This one is completely non-metallic, so it’s a little bulkier. However, this also means you can go through a metal detector without issue- unless TSA makes you remove it anyway. The tactile click when you snap it together is really neat.

What needs to be improved

Like I’ve mentioned, you have to remove the male end of the Cobra buckle before threading the belt through your belt loops. If you dislike this extra strap, this is not for you.

Final thoughts

I actually like the non-metallic buckle. Because it’s not painted, the buckle will keep looking sharp after lots of use. The hook-and-loop end keeps me looking sharp despite any belt excess. This one is a keeper in my wardrobe.

Waterfield Design Ranger iPhone X Case review

Hailing from San Francisco, Waterfield is known for their unique approach to bag & accessory design. Their products are *just* a bit different from what you’d expect. Take the Ranger iPhone X Case, for instance. It’s a beautiful full-grain leather case… but there is a lot more going on under that rugged exterior. Let’s go check it out!

What is it?

The Waterfield Ranger iPhone X Case is a full-grain leather holster-style case for your iPhone. It’s specifically designed to the iPhone X specifications but will work for an iPhone 6, 7, or 8. An iPhone 7 Plus/8 Plus size is also available. I’m using an iPhone 6s for all the pictures you’ll find in this review.

Design and features

The first thing you’ll notice about the Ranger is the use of a magnetic Fidlock snap closure on the cover flap. The “male” end on the flap automatically snaps into the “female” receptacle on the case when it drops in place and is opened by pulling down on the tab. I love Fidlock hardware. It’s great for  one-handed release, but keeps the cover tightly secured when not in use.

Once you’ve opened the flap, you’ll find an ultrasuede-lined pocket for your phone. Contoured edges and open sides make it easy to slide your phone in-and-out with one hand, even if you have meaty fingers. There’s also a second pocket on the front face for small items like cash or your earbuds, but you won’t want to keep any cards in there with magnetic strips (the magnets on the case will scramble them).

On the rear of the case, you’ll find the attachment clip: a beefy 4” long leather strap that snaps to the rear of the phone case via a pair of quarter-sized magnets (one mounted on the strap, and one mounted on the case). These magnets are seriously strong, powerful enough to clip the case over your pants top, your jeans pocket, or even an open exterior pocket on your bag. I’ve been attaching the case to the exterior pocket of my Saddleback Mountainback gear bag, and it’s still super-secure despite all that heavy waxed canvas. It’s great for providing you options if you forgot your belt!

Rounding out the design, there’s a slot cut out on the bottom of the cradle to allow access to your iPhone X cable port. This slot is also wide enough that it doesn’t interfere with the phone’s speakers.

The Ranger uses a full-grain distressed leather that’s just beautiful. It’s soft and supple out of the box with luxurious hand feel, and there appears to be no dye bleed after several weeks of use. It smells fantastic out of the box and, as you can see from the photos, is picking up some nice character after several weeks of use. Waterfield also offers the case in either chocolate leather (shown here) or black if that’s your preference. Personally, I think the chocolate leather shows a bit more character.

I’ve been waiting to get my hands on a Waterfield product for a review, and I’m impressed. The materials and components are all top notch. Everything is made in San Francisco in small batches, and you can see the quality craftsmanship that goes into the finished product.

Positives

  • Simple one-handed access to your phone.
  • Great soft, supple leather quality.
  • Fidlock magnetic closure automatically snaps shut.
  • Extra strong magnet clip ensures that it will stay put — even through thick fabrics.

Negatives

  • Magnets will scramble magnetic strip cards — keep them in your wallet.

Final thoughts

Holster-style phone cases have fallen out of popularity with phones getting leaner & tougher, so your relative happiness with this case will depend on your personal preference. It’s easy to operate with one hand, and the versatile clip design allows for multiple attachment points. Like all Waterfield designs, the materials and hardware are fantastic. If you like a holster style phone case, the Waterfield Ranger is just about as good as it gets.
