Humixx Tablet Stand review

REVIEW – Albert Einstein is reported to have said, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.”  The idea behind this aphorism is to make something complex as simple as it can be without losing its essence.  I don’t know whether or not Humixx is an Einstein fan, but they’ve certainly created a tablet stand with a philosophy of simplicity.  Even the top of the box says, “It is simplicity rather than luxury.”  If you’re looking for a simple and yet sturdy stand to hold your tablet or phone, Humixx has a gadget for you.

What is it?

The Humixx Tablet Stand is an adjustable stand for holding your tablet, your phone, and other smallish items.

What’s in the box?

  • The stand
  • A customer care card
  • A manual

Hardware specs

The stand is made of aluminum, thus allowing it to remain light (only 14 ounces) while still being strong.

Setup

Setup is as simple as it gets.  I removed the packaging, unfolded the stand, and I was done!  There’s a manual with step-by-step instructions, but I didn’t bother reading it.  The customer care card suggests that if I have a problem, I can send an email to their Hotmail address (Hotmail?  In 2019?).  If I’m happy, they ask that I add a review on Amazon.

Design and features

My wife and I each have an iPad and an iPhone, so we take turns using the stand.  My favorite place to use it is at the kitchen table.  I can watch a Dota match on Twitch while eating messy food that requires both hands, like wings or burritos.  I also use it to hold my iPhone next to my computer for those days when I get too many texts while working.

My wife uses it in the kitchen but while she’s cooking.  Sometimes she uses with Paprika, an iPad app that displays her recipes, but most of the time she simply has Netflix going with a movie.

My wife teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) classes online, and she often needs her iPad’s screen as well as her computer.  The stand is a perfect way to position the screen for readability.  As a bonus, the notch in the bottom of the stand allows for her iPad to be charging while she’s using it.

Humixx’s stand folds up nice and neat, perfect for tossing into a backpack when you need to take it with you.

It also has a hole in the back of the stand, a nice touch for helping with cable management.

Along the bottom, where it holds the tablet, Humixx has thoughtfully added rubber strips to protect the tablet from getting scratched.

What I like

  • Lightweight
  • Sturdy
  • Flexible

What needs to be improved

  • Nothing

Final thoughts

This stand does everything that it needs to do without sacrificing anything.  I am super happy with it, and I’m certain that it will have a useful place in our home for a long time.

Yohann MacBook wood stand review

REVIEW – It should go without saying that I love tech products. But it might surprise some of you to know that I love products made of natural materials like wood and leather as much and sometimes more than products made of synthetic materials. That’s why I like to use handmade accessories with my gadgets. The newest such accessory that I’ve had the opportunity to check out is a wood stand for the MacBook from Yohann.

What is it?

Yohann is a company based in Switzerland that makes sustainably crafted wood stands for MacBooks, iPads, and the Apple Pencil out of solid blocks of Oak and Walnut that are harvested from Italy and then physically disabled people package and ship the stands.

Design and features

I was sent the Oak version of the stand which as you can see, is just gorgeous. The rich golden wood has a strikingly beautiful grain that reminds me of furniture.

Each stand is made of a solid block of wood that is cut and sanded to be smooth with no sharp or rough edges and definitely no splinters to be found.

The stand’s shape has a ledge at the bottom that holds the front edge of the laptop (or tablet) and a backrest that keeps the display at an optimal angle.

The stands are designed to be used with post-2008 Unibody Aluminium MacBook models (MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro) with a screen size of 11 – 15 inches. I tested the Yohann stand with my 12in MacBook and it worked perfectly as you can see from the images above. The stand remains perfectly balanced with the laptop lid closed.

And also works perfectly when the display is opened too. The stand creates a minimalist work setup when used with an external keyboard and mouse like my original Apple wireless keyboard and a Logitech MX Master 2S wireless mouse.

The Yohann stand provides excellent air circulation on all sides so that your laptop won’t overheat.

I’m happy to report that the same Yohann stand works great with my Huawei MediaPad M5 tablet and my Samsung Galaxy Tab S3. The back of the stand even functions as a holder for a wireless keyboard when you’re not using it which is kind of cool.

What I like

  • Beautiful and beautifully made
  • Can be used with MacBooks and tablets

What needs to be improved

  • Price

Final thoughts

The Yohann stand is expertly crafted, works as intended, and looks elegant. I love everything about it except for one thing. It’s expensive. Very expensive. At $159 for the oak version of the stand and $179 for the walnut version, this probably won’t be a spontaneous purchase for most people. But then you have to add an extra $19 to have it shipped from Switzerland to the US and, well… ouch. Is it worth that price when you can buy a plastic or metal stand for much less money? I think anyone interested in buying a Yohann stand has to answer that for themselves because it’s like shopping for a dining room table. You can buy one from Lowes or one from a furniture store. It all depends on the style you prefer and the price you’re willing to pay for that style.

Price: $159.00 – $179.00 depending on wood type

The DraftTable is big and sturdy enough for an iPad Pro 12.9

NEWS – Many stands for iPads are designed for the smaller iPad.  They just aren’t big enough nor stable enough to support the biggest of the iPad Pros so that you can actually do some work.  The DraftTable from ElevationLab is designed for the iPad Pro 12.9.  It functions rather like an artist’s drafting table, and it was designed by digital artists for use by digital artists.   Whether you’re doing app development, photo editing, drawing, or just typing an email, you’ll love the DraftTable for using your iPad Pro.

Strength and stability is built into the DraftTable, with its rigid, laser-cut steel table; fiber-reinforced polymer legs and hidden, spring-loaded hinges; soft, medical-grade silicone cover for the table; and high-friction skids to prevent sliding.

Adjusting the angle is as simple as folding down a leg.  The spring-loaded hinges keep the legs locked in place, although the tallest leg does have additional locks for extra stability.  Although it’s big enough for the biggest Pro, it works with all iPads, including the iPad mini.  You can even use it with Wacom tablets.

Use the DraftTable with just the iPad, or connect the iPad to a Mac, and the DraftTable transforms the iPad into a Wacom Cintiq-like drawing tablet for your computer when used with the Apple Pencil and the AstroPad app.  When you’ve finished work, the DraftTable folds up for storage in your desk or for traveling along with you in your gear bag.

However you use it, the DraftTable kit ($69.95) comes with a wrist pad and a Pencil stand to make it comfortable to work for hours on the iPad.  If you don’t need the accessories, the DraftTable is $49.95 alone.  DraftTable is available at the ElevationLab website or at Amazon.

Keep your tablet close at hand but out of the mix with this cutting board

If you use your tablet as your cookbook or for watching cooking videos while you work in the kitchen, have you found a safe place for it while you work?  If you need a new cutting board, you should check out this bamboo board that has a built-in stand for most tablets 10″ and smaller.  It even comes with a bamboo capacitive stylus that stores in the stand area.  The stand can be attached magnetically to either the top of the board (left) or to the end of the board (right).

The cutting board has the antimicrobial properties of bamboo, and it’s easy to clean.  It measures 14.25” L x 14.125” W x 0.75” D.  The raised stand height is 5.375”, or the extended board is 18.75″ long with the stand added to the end.  There are also a total of 8 slots in the sides to store knives.

The Bamboo Cutting Board with Stand for iPad and Knife Storage is $35.00 at the Fancy website.

Wiplabs Slope universal tablet stand review

I’ve had several years of happy tablet use with my venerable Dell Venue 8, but found that when I wasn’t using it, I left it in odd locations – a piano bench, cluttered dresser top, even on the kitchen counter. Wiplabs Slope universal tablet stand has finally given me a place to park my tablet. My little buddy has found a home.

What is it?

Wiplabs Slope universal tablet stand is a sturdy, brushed aluminum parking spot for your tablet or smartphone. It’s equipped with sticky pads on the face and base, to securely hold your device.

Hardware Specs

  • Brushed aluminum construction
  • Strong grip pads on the front and bottom
  • 7-1/2” tall
  • 4” width at its widest
  • 4” deep
  • 8.9 ounces

What’s in the box?

  • Slope stand
  • User manual

Design and features

The Slope is an aluminum frame with sticky pads allowing an attached device to be used without shifting, sliding, or slipping. It’s simple, tough and works very well.

At first glance, I thought, “This looks fairly intuitive. Why should I read the manual? All that needs to be done is peel the protective plastic covering off the sticky pads, put it down, and slap my tablet in place.” I’m so glad I went through the manual first…

The fresh sticky pads on the Slope are downright powerful. The first time I put it down, I was shocked at the gripping power. The manual contains warnings about placing it on a painted surface and they aren’t kidding. I suspect that if the Slope were placed on a loose surface, it could easily pull fresh paint, laminate or even a heavy glass desk protector loose.  The grip is so secure, it completely lifted a clear plastic USB hard drive enclosure I had placed it on. The manual states that normal wear, dust, and debris that sticks to the pads will lessen its grip, but after a week, it’s still holding on tight.

The next photo is in the correct orientation. Yes, it’s really sticking to the wall.

The sticky pad on the face is the same, but I had a little challenge to overcome. Having worked in factories and tough environments, I had applied a carbon fiber skin to my tablet. I had previously tried similar products with little success holding onto the carbon weave, but the Slope’s stickiness had no trouble gripping the irregular surface.  I was able to place the tablet vertically and horizontally with no difficulties. I was also able to offset the tablet, pushing the center of gravity considerably off balance with no problems. I have no doubt the Slope can hold considerably larger tablets with ease.

Having my tablet in its new home brought new uses. The viewing angle is very good so, while I’m fiddling around with my desktop, I was able to pull up Netflix and comfortably watch. As a result, my tablet is seeing more usage.

What I like

  • The sticky pads hold very securely, horizontally or vertically
  • The viewing angle is very good
  • Sturdy, attractive construction

What needs to be improved?

  • I would recommend Wiplabs place a warning label on the sticky pad peel-off plastic protectors to prevent their customers from damaging their desks! 🙂
  • At $49.99, it’s expensive, but definitely premium quality

Final thoughts

The Wiplabs Slope universal tablet stand is handsome, well-constructed and works better than other sticky type stands I’ve used, particularly with the carbon fiber cover on my tablet.
