MacCase Premium Leather iPad Folio Case & Accessories review

REVIEW – Modular design makes me happy. MacCase makes my Apple products happy. Put them together, and you’re looking the MacCase iPad Premium Folio Case collection! We’re checking out the iPad 12.9″ keyboard-compatible case along with a bunch of accessories that make for some supreme office stylin’. To the review!

What is it?

It’s a folio case for your iPad. The model I am testing is designed to work with the Apple Keyboard and the first generation 12.9″ iPad Pro. I’ve also got a set of accessories that include the paper holder, cable pouch, card holder, and pencil case that build out a whole traveling office solution.

What’s in the box?

The case comes as a stand-alone item, and you can add whatever accessories you wish.

Hardware specs

  • Made from premium vegetable-dyed unfinished leather
  • Suede interior
  • Polymer iPad tray
  • Magnetic pads for attachments
  • Size and weight vary by size (depending on which iPad you have)

Design and features

MacCase has been a long-standing provider of accessories for Apple products, continually designing new cases for hauling your iPads and MacBooks. The iPad folio lineup embodies a lot of the trademarks that make MacCase special: premium leathers, superb construction, and innovative design details that work seamlessly with your hardware. The iPad Folio lineup is made up of vegetable-dyed premium leather with a soft finish, backed by a padded suede liner to protect from scratching. Stitching and assembly throughout are impeccable, with some nice little design accents that go along with the premium quality of the design. Check out the goods:

Your iPad tucks into a collar made from a clear gray polymer that almost gives it a frameless mounting look. All of the ports and buttons are precisely machined to give access to all of the iPad’s functions. It also pops out easily if you need to remove it, but stays locked in place when used with the case:

If you want to go without any accessories, the case works perfectly on it’s own. You can open it like a book, or take advantage of the hinged backplate to use the case as a stand:

The version I am testing is designed to also work seamlessly with the Apple keyboard. The keyboard slot is exposed in the collar, so you can snap it into place:

It then follows the folds of the case when you use the stand, with the keyboard stand neatly folding into place.

Here’s a comparison shot of the stand setup with and without the keyboard. I really like this aspect of the design, because I can work with the stand either way:

Now here’s where the customization comes into play. There are a set of magnetic pads on the front cover of case, designed to work with a range of accessories. These accessories are all made to match the case with respect to leather quality and finishing, and each has matching magnetic pads to connect to the case.

Three magnetic pads run up the side of the basic case, which allows for attaching accessories. They snap into place with enough grip that they won’t get knocked loose without some significant force (they can be removed easily by prying them loose):

If you add the paper holder you get to additional magnetic pads on its front faces which allow you to load up all the accessories at once:

Speaking of accessories, let’s run through the collection. The paper holder not only provides additional accessory attachment points, but it allows you to sandwich up to 8 sheets of paper between the paper holder and the case. It uses all three magnetic pads on the base case to secure it. Peel the holder off and your papers are ready to go.

The card holder attaches with one magnetic pad, and will hold up to a dozen standard business cards.

The pencil holder has a magnetic closure, and is sized for the Apple Pencil or a similar sized stylus. It requires two magnetic pad attachment points to secure.

The cable pouch has a zipper closure and measures 7″ by 3.5″ by 0.5″ deep. This will wrangle all of your cables, headphones and charger brick. I can also get my iPhone XS Max in there if I want to. This pouch also requires two magnetic pad attachment points to secure.

The case on its own weighs 1.25 pounds, while the whole package with accessories weighs in at about 7 ounces more. Note that this is before you add the iPad Pro 12.9″ and keyboard (mine is a first generation). The case with the keyboard measures in at just under an inch in total depth, with the whole kit measuring in at just under 2 inches deep with all accessories.

Performance

The MacCase iPad Premium Leather Folio Case is a beautifully crafted, durable piece of gear that functions really well if you’re an iPad nomad. It looks great in business environments and provides excellent protection for your gear. Add the accessories and you have everything you need for meetings (or sales calls, or interviews) in one complete, streamlined package. And if you run with your keyboard all the time using the iPad as a laptop replacement, you’ll find the keyboard-compatible model fits that use case perfectly.

There are some drawbacks to the bulky design, however, that may not be ideal depending on your intended use. If I am just using my iPad to surf the web, for example, I find the case to be a bit bulky and awkward to use in the “open book” format. The front cover does flip all the way around the back, but it is still clunky if you’re resting it on your lap or sitting on the couch. It really works best as a stand in my opinion, but the stand doesn’t support rotation for vertical/horizontal iPad positioning. This is a pretty common issue with heftier iPad cases, so you may or may not find this to be an issue.

I quite like the assortment of accessories, especially the Pencil case and cable pouch. Unfortunately, the base case configuration won’t support both of those accessories at once (you need 4 attachment points). You’ll need to add the paper holder for that. This does not add much bulk to the case, but it does restrict your options unless you go all in on the accessories. I’d like to see four attachment points on the base case more maximum flexibility.

One final note on the accessories: if you’re using the case as a stand, you’ll find those accessories are now under the base. You’ll need to pull them off if you’re using the case in stand mode. If you’ve got the paper holder, you can just pull the whole thing off with the accessories attached and set it aside while you work.

What I like

  • Premium quality craftsmanship
  • Professional look and feel for business applications
  • Excellent protection for your iPad
  • Accessories allow you to run bag-free

What I’d change

  • Accessories get in the way when used as a stand for your iPad and/or keyboard
  • Base configuration doesn’t support all accessory pouches
  • Bulky case may not appeal to all users

Final thoughts

The MacCase iPad Premium Leather Folio is a great piece of business gear, especially if you use your iPad and keyboard as a laptop replacement. There are some little design issues that you may or may not like, depending on your intended use. Overall, however, it’s a high-quality set of gear that provides the customization and durability that will last through years of use.

The Folio is available in the vintage brown (tested here) or black, in multiple configurations to fit different iPad sizes and versions. Keyboard-compatible models are available, as are bundle packs that include a briefcase or messenger bag designed to work with the case. Check out the MacCase site at the link below for more info.

Price: iPad cases start at $149, depending on size. Accessories are priced from $20 to $40 each.

Moshi VersaCover Case with Folding Cover for iPad Pro/Air review

REVIEW – My household is home to several tablets and cell phones. We use them so much that I am always looking for a case that incorporates functionality with style and versatility. I just got the opportunity to test and review the Moshi VersaCover Case with Folding Cover for iPad Pro/Air. Here is my summary.

What is it?

The Moshi VersaCover Case with Folding Cover for iPad Pro/Air is an iPad case that utilizes a unique folding cover that allows you to display your iPad at angles optimized for typing, reading, and browsing the web. It has a soft microfiber cover with a shock-absorbing frame bonded to a shatter-proof hard-shell case to protect the back of your device. The case also has a built-in magnet that supports the iPad auto-wake/sleep feature. It is available in two colors.

What’s in the box

1 x Moshi VersaCover Case with Folding Cover for iPad Pro/Air
1 x Product Box with printed instructions

Design and features

This case comes with a microfiber cover and a clear see-through back that holds the iPad. The back has all of the necessary cutouts for the camera, etc.

The microfiber cover magnetically closes around the back of the back cover to provide for a secure enclosure. There is enough space between the closing flap and the tablet to hold the Apple pencil.

The cover folds and clasps together magnetically to form a stand for the tablet to be used in multiple positions.

What I like

  • The quality
  • The design that includes a place for the Apple pencil

What can be improved

  • Stability

Final thoughts

There are many types of cases for mobile devices including cases for tablets. The cases are designed for various types of use and purpose. This case provides decent protection and for someone who uses their tablet in their hands and occasionally on a flat surface, this case may work. For a “heavy” user like myself that uses a tablet on various surfaces and does a lot of typing, this case does not work. In addition, in a market that is flooded with cases are various price points and with lots of versatility, the cost for this case may not match the function and need for many.

Saddleback Leather Hard Leather iPad Pro Case review

REVIEW – For each of the past 2 years, I have invested in the newly released iPad 12.9″ Pro tablet for that year. I have become very dependent on using the iPad for many tasks including my daily email and MS Office tasks as well as for video and photo editing. The investment in the iPad is relatively expensive, so I always keep a lookout for any new case that will protect my device and if it can conquer fit, finish and function, then it is a winner. I recently received the Saddleback Leather Hard Leather iPad Pro case for review. At first glance, it is very attractive. Let’s see if it is just all looks or if it has much more to offer.

What is it?

The Saddleback Leather iPad case is an attractive and sleek iPad Pro 12.9″ case designed as a protective carry case and stand.

What’s in the box

1 x iPad Leather Case for 12.9″ iPad Pro

Design and features

This leather iPad case is available in four colors which are tobacco, dark coffee brown, chestnut, and black. For this review, the case is the dark brown. It is an attractive case with well-done edge stitching and leather straps on one side and loops on the other to accommodate the straps. There is a cutout on the sides with the loops to accommodate the camera.

The outside of the case is “finished” leather while the inside has the raw look. There are “pockets” on each edge that are holders for the iPad.

The picture below shows the iPad inserted into the case with the Apple pencil attached. For the 2018 iPad, the Apple pencil attaches and charges magnetically on the iPad.

The next picture below shows how the cover of the case is bent backward and the leather straps are inserted into the loops to allow the case to function as an upright stand.

Performance

When the case is closed, it allows the Apple pencil to remain attached and charging as necessary. It is quite slim and when closed everything feels safe and secure.

There are sufficient openings on each side that allow access to the speakers and USB-C port.

When the case is utilized as a stand, it reverses the orientation of the iPad so that the pencil is on the bottom which for my use is very inconvenient. It is almost impossible for me to remove or replace the pencil without lifting the case. When the case is bent to form the stand, at least one edge of the iPad tends to pop out of its holding pocket, and in one instance almost resulted in me dropping the iPad. Also, in the position as a stand, it works well on a desk or hard surface, but not so comfortable for hand holding or in my lap.

One other issue is that I noticed that the case scratches easily, so I am not sure if it will look nice and rustic over time, or just a complete mess.

What I like

  • The sophisticated look
  • The quality of the leather and construction

What can be improved

  • The design for use as a stand
  • The finish or type of leather that needs to be more resistant to scratches
  • The surrounding pockets/holders for the iPad
  • The design that allows the iPad and pencil to be in the correct orientation when the case is being used as a stand
  • A design that allows practical use when in your lap

Final thoughts

The Saddleback Leather iPad case is made from really nice quality leather and looks very attractive and professional. The stitching is well done and it just looks like quality. However, from a functional perspective, the design needs a bit more thought so that the fit and function match the materials used. While it may add to a sophisticated look when carrying your iPad, I do not find its function practical for my daily use. Maybe this is just my issue, but I do suspect that many users will experience the same.

Harber London Slim iPad Pro EVO with Apple Pencil Holder review

There’s nothing makes an impression like a fine piece of leather. If you’re looking to level up your style, I’d like to introduce you my new friend: the Slim iPad Pro EVO from Harber London. Think of it like a fine whiskey: simple and elegant, with a subtle complexity that just oozes class. To the review!

What is it?

It’s a leather sleeve for your iPad Pro, Apple Keyboard, and Apple Pencil.

Hardware specs

  • 13″ wide by 10″ tall
  • Full grain vegetable tanned cowhide leather
  • 100% wool felt lining
  • Hand made
  • Fits the 12.9” iPad Pro with or without the Apple Keyboard
  • Internal security loop for the Apple Pencil

What’s in the box?

The sleeve is the only star of the show here, but we have to spend a moment talking about the packaging. Harber London delivers your sleeve in an elegant cotton white bag, sealed in an embossed black folio that sets the tone for a sophisticated brand experience. I love it when brands pay attention to the little details like this.

Design and features

Let’s start our review with the construction. The Harber London Slim iPad Pro EVO uses full grain vegetable tanned cowhide leather that is rich, supple, and elegant. Little details like the tastefully-placed  embossed product logos just add to the sense of sophisticated style in the build:

Harber London’s products are all hand made in Spain, and the quality craftsmanship is obvious in the little assembly details. The 100% natural wool lining pairs perfectly with the leather. It’s got amazing hand feel, durability, and a wonderfully soft wrapper to protect your iPad’s delicate surfaces. The edging on both the wool and leather is left raw, letting the natural materials speak for themselves:

The interior leather loop is sized perfectly for your Apple Pencil. It’s tight enough to keep it from running away, but not so tight that you’re fighting to get your Pencil in and out when you need it.

The sleeve is sized to fit your iPad Pro while allowing enough extra depth to accommodate the Pencil, making it easy to slide your iPad in and out. It’s snug enough to accommodate your Apple Keyboard attached to your iPad without extra slack to slide about. You could probably add your iPad back cover if you want to stretch the leather a bit, but I wouldn’t recommend it. And if you’re using the sleeve, why would you need that anyway?

Total measurements on the sleeve are 13″ wide by 10″ tall, and about 3/4″ deep when you load up your iPad Pro, Apple Keyboard, and Apple Pencil. It adds about an inch all around and 1/2″ depth to your carry as opposed to running naked with the iPad Pro. Not a huge increase in volume if you’re throwing it in your bag.

For me, the perfect use case for this sleeve is the business/creative professional who has pared down the meeting essentials to your iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. There’s no fumbling with zips or flaps in the design; slip out your tools, and get right to work. It also makes a serious style statement that looks great when you need to dress up for that big presentation or board meeting.

Harber London does offer a variety of hand crafted leather and EDC products, including sleeve designs for an assortment of devices with different features. Take a wander over to Harber London’s site for more information.

What I like

  • Hand-made with beautiful, natural materials
  • Simple and elegant
  • Sized perfectly for your iPad Pro and Apple Pencil

What needs to be improved

  • Not much at all

Final thoughts

There’s something magical about hand made leather products that let the quality of craftsmanship shine through. The Harber London Slim iPad Pro EVO ticks all of those boxes for me, with great functionality to boot. It’s simple, elegant, and classy. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more from this brand.

Price: About $80 USD. Note that Harber London is based in the UK. This item ships worldwide for under $10 USD, but check shipping rates when purchasing.
