Thanks to Aldi, Advent calendars aren’t just for kids anymore! I’ll drink to that!

NEWS – Kids aren’t the only ones who can look forward to opening a new door on the Christmas Advent calendar to find a treat now.  Last year, Aldi markets offered a calendar with a small bottle of wine for each day in the countdown to Christmas.  That calendar was available only in the UK, but they will also be offered in the USA this year.

The calendar has 24 doors, behind which is a small bottle of a red, white, or rosé wine, or even a bottle of bubbly.  Each bottle should contain about 6 ounces, so I’m thinking each adult in the family might want their own calendar.

Each box will contain:

  • 2 x Prosecco Extra Dry, Italy
  • 2 x Chardonnay, Australia
  • 2 x Chenin Blanc, South Africa
  • 2 x Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand
  • 2 x White Zinfandel, U.S.A.
  • 2 x Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia
  • 2 x Pinot Grigio, Italy
  • 2 x Malbec, Argentina
  • 2 x Shiraz, Australia
  • 2 x Red Blend, Italy
  • 2 x Merlot, Chile
  • 2 x Sauvignon Blanc, Chile

The Advent calendar will go on sale at US Aldi stores on November 7th.  There is a limited supply, so you’ll want to get your calendars early so you’re ready to start drinking opening on December 1st.  The calendars should sell for about $70.00, though prices may vary by location.  Learn more at Aldi’s website; while you’re there, check to see if Aldi stores in your area are allowed to sell wine.

Add the “rock” to Rock-a-bye, Baby with this crib mobile

NEWS – Forget fuzzy bunnies and sweet lullabies!  Give your new baby a crib mobile that’s going to introduce them to the finer things in life – guitars and rock music!  I think the Rock On Guitar Mobile must have been what the boys in Greta Van Fleet saw hanging over their cribs, to instill them with such wonderful rock music at such young ages.

The mobile is populated with plush Flying Vs and Strats.  The guitars are made from polyester materials and strung from soft bars.  It’s ready to hang above the crib or changing table.  You’ll need to supply your own lullaby – maybe try Stevie Ray Vaughn’s version of Mary Had a Little Lamb.

The Rock On Guitar Mobile is $34.95 at UncommonGoods.

Everything is classier when wrapped in leather – even a tool set

NEWS – I’ve seen toolsets with various types of grips, but I’ve never seen one with leather-wrapped handles.  This set from Spanish company Sol&Luna uses select leather that was tanned using an ecological tanning process, then carefully cut and hand-stitched to the tools. The leather is 100% cow leather tanned with a vegetal process.  The resulting leather is fireproof, and as Sol&Luna says, “suitable for public use projects”.

The set consists of:  measuring tape, hammer, pliers, and 7 screwdrivers.  The hammer is 12″ long, longest screwdriver is 10.5″, and the smallest screwdriver 3.75″.

The Leather Tool Set is $280.00 from Industry West.

Protect your medications or small valuables with the iKeyp smart, connected personal safe

NEWS – iKeyp was originally conceived as a small safe to protect your medications, but the designers quickly realized it could also protect your passport, jewelry, or other small valuables.  It’s sized to fit inside some deeper medicine cabinets, but you can use it on a shelf or in a drawer.  It’s also small enough to travel with you.

iKeyp is paired with an app, and it is WiFi-connected for security monitoring via the app.  You can unlock the iKeyp using the water-resistant keypad, through the app, or with the emergency key.  Using the app, you can even open the safe remotely if you need to give someone access to the contents.

The safe is constructed of a polycarbonate/ABS blend and metal.  It comes in two versions:  The Bolt (seen here), which is intended to be screwed into the wall or medicine cabinet, and the Pro (seen in previous image), with built-in retractable wings for increased portability and easy installation.  For extra security, the wings can only be retracted when the safe is opened.

The companion app monitors the safe and will alert your smartphone app if it detects a failed keypad attempt or unexpected movement.  When used to safeguard medications, you can also setup alarms to remind you of forgotten doses.

The iKeyp’s exterior measurements are 6″ x 12.8″ x 3.4″.  When the wings are fully extended on the Pro model, the width increases from 12.8″ to 22.6″.  Interior dimensions are 4.6″ x 8.4″ x 2.5″.  It’s powered by 4 AA batteries (not included).  Expected battery life is 4-6 months under normal usage, assuming being opened 2-3 times daily.

Both the Bolt and Pro models are $149.00.  The iKeyp Personal safe is available from The Grommet.
