Light your room with an eco-friendly piece of art

If you purchase these E.P. Eco-Friendly LED light bulbs, you’ll need a lamp that doesn’t have a shade.  These bulbs are little works of art, and they are too pretty to be covered up.  They are all handmade from a resin to which some colorant is added to give the bulbs a look inspired by a Jackson Pollock painting.  The resin is break-resistant, making these bulbs safer than standard glass bulbs.

The E.P. Eco-Friendly bulbs are “green” in many ways:

  • Made from green, recyclable materials
  • LED bulb saves up to 60% more energy than regular lights
  • Won’t get hot even after hours of producing rich, radiant light, thus keeping the room cooler
  • Uses only 3W of power

They are good for the Earth, and they’re good for your wallet, too.  They are rated for 100,000+ hours, saving on replacement costs.  The screw bases are designed to fit standard E27~E26 sockets.  And they are backed with a 1-year warranty.

There are six styles of these bulbs, but each bulb will be unique.  The actual color and curves will vary because of the handmade nature of the bulbs.  The E.P. Eco-Friendly LED light bulbs are normally $24.95, but they are $19.95 at the time of writing.  Purchase at the Popular Science Shop.  You can find a larger variety of the E.P. bulbs, plus a variety of light fixtures designed for these bulbs, at the E.P. DesignLab website.

TaoTronics LED Desk Lamp with Fast Wireless Charger review

I am always looking to provide as much function on my work desk as possible, but I hate giving up too much real estate to do so. When I received this lamp as a sample to test, I was very excited because of its possible ability to replace a couple of devices on my desk,  and to still provide the same function. Without much delay, I ripped open the box and got started.

What is it?

TaoTronics LED Desk Lamp with Fast Wireless Charger is an adjustable desk lamp that flexible both in form and in light intensity. It also allows you to wirelessly charge your QI-enabled smartphone.

What’s in the box

Included in the box with the TatTronics desk lamp are an AC wall adapter, an instruction manual, and a warranty registration card with an imprinted QR code.

Design and features

The desk lamp is well built and looks very nice with a white and silver color combination. The base of the lamp has a circular pad for QI wireless charging, an on and off touch button,  a light intensity touch surface, and a light shade touch button. This lamp is very bright at it highest setting, and at every intensity level, it provides a good spread of light.

On the back of the lamp just below the first flexible elbow, there is a USB port that allows you to charge devices via a USB cable. On the side of the base of the lamp is the jack to plug in the AC adapter.

There is a second elbow further up the lamp that allows for additional flexibility and positioning of the light so that you can direct the beam where you need it.

The base of the lamp also has a built-in elbow that allows the bottom half of the lamp the flexibility to be positioned for optimal use as well, and the lamp also swivels on the base.

The semi-circular touchpad that is positioned on the front of the surface of the base of the lamp controls the brightness/intensity of the light. Swiping from left to right increases the intensity, and from right to left decreases the intensity.

Once the lamp is plugged in via the AC adapter, the QI wireless charging function works simply by placing the phone on the charging pad. (Note the green charging indicator on the upper right-hand corner of the phone in the picture on the right below)

What I like

I really like just about everything about this lamp from its sleek look to its build quality, to its features. I especially like the simple QI wireless charging feature that actually works as well as it is supposed to, and the ability to vary the shades of white of the light, and the intensity, make it versatile and perfect for many applications.

What can be improved

The three things that can be improved on this lamp are:
– A heavier weighted base
– A longer AC adapter cord
– More USB ports

Final thoughts

This TaoTronics LED desk lamp with QI wireless charging is a well thought out design, and it does a great job of providing multi-function in one sleek, streamlined, and attractive package. Assuming that the build quality will withstand the test of time, and the occasional bumps and bruises, it will have a place in my home for a long time. It is definitely a worthwhile purchase.

AUKEY Floor Lamp (LT-ST35) review

I spend a lot of time looking at devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops that provide their own light. But for those times when I am flipping through an actual magazine or book or writing in my notebooks, I like to have some extra light to help me see what I’m doing. This is especially true when I’m sitting on the couch where I don’t have a ceiling light shining directly down on me. For this reason, I’ve been on the lookout for a small floor lamp for a long time and was happy to accept an offer from AUKEY to review their space-saving LT-ST35 floor lamp. Let’s check it out.

What is it?

The AUKEY Floor Lamp (LT-ST35) is an adjustable floor lamp that uses long-lasting power-saving LEDs instead of fluorescent style bulbs.

What’s in the box?

Parts to assemble the floor lamp
Power adapter
Assembly instructions
User manual

Let’s build a lamp!

Assembling the AUKEY floor lamp is easy and requires no special tools other than your two hands and the ability to follow the included instructions. The lamp goes together like I’ve laid it out in the image above. The lamp is made up of 5 sections including the base. All you have to do is make sure you put them together in the correct order with the power cable going from the lamp head to the base.

The first step is to plug the top most lamp section with the LEDs to the controller section. The hardest part of this step is to connect the two cable connectors.

When you’re done with step one, this is what you have.

Then you screw in the next section of the lamp making sure that the power cable is inserted through the hollow steel black powder coated tube.

Then you screw in the final pole section of the lamp.

Connect the power cable from the last tube to the base and screw the assembly into the base.

A short length of the power cable extends from the bottom of the base. This cable has a connector at the end that accepts the cable from the included power adapter. So all you have to do is connect the cable to the adapter and you’re done. Assembly completed.

Here’s the assembled AUKEY LT-ST35 floor lamp. The whole assembly takes about 10 minutes or less. You don’t want to speed through it because it’s possible to cross thread the lengths of tubing or kink the power cable which would not be a good thing.

How well does it work?

You can easily adjust the angle of the lamp head just by bending it in the desired direction or angle.

To turn on the lamp, you just press and hold the control knob for a couple of seconds. Then you can turn the knob to adjust the brightness level or quickly press the knob to adjust the color temperature.

The color temperature for the LEDs can be set to cool white, nature white, or warm white and the lamp will remember the brightness and color temperatures settings after cycling power with the control knob.

The 1000 lumen version of the AUKEY space saving floor lamp puts out ample light without much heat. I left the lamp set on at full brightness setting for over an hour and was able to touch the lamp head with no problems. It was warm, but not hot.

What I like

  • Easy to put together
  • Easy controls
  • Light temperature and brightness are adjustable
  • Doesn’t put out much heat

What needs to be improved

  • Nothing

Final thoughts

I really like this lamp. It is easy to assemble and just as easy to operate. It’s a simple lamp, but it provides a lot of light with the ability to adjust the brightness, color temperature, and the angle of the lamp head. The fact that it’s an energy efficient LED lamp means that you won’t need to buy replacement bulbs as it should last for many years to come.

This 3D printed moon adds ambience to your room

This 3D-printed lamp gives new meaning to the term “moonlit room.”  My Metanoia says each of the moons have been printed in a 31-hour 3D printing process from 100% eco-friendly PLA from the USA.  The rigorous printing process results in a lamp that accurately portrays the moon’s cratered surface.

The 500mAh built-in rechargeable battery charges in 2 hours and provides 8-10 hours of use.  The LEDs are switchable from white light to yellowish light.  The brightness is adjustable from 0.1W to 1.5W,  so this is an accent light or nightlight.  The Wireless 3D Moon Lamp comes with a USB charging cable and a wooden display stand.  It’s available in sizes varying from 3.9″ for about $75 up to 8.7″ for about $180 from My Metanoia.

Apparently, the printing plans are available online, so you could print your own if you have a 3D printer.  I’ve also seen these moon lamps offered on eBay and Amazon in a variety of sizes for much lower prices.

Combine a light with Alexa – what do you C?

GE and Amazon have developed the “C”, a lamp and clock that is Alexa enabled.  It has visual indicators for time on the ring where hands would go, a sleep enabled light with warm colors at night and cool colors in the morning, and tunable light controllable by voice commands for home and office environments.  Normal Alexa functions will be available so there is no need for a stand alone Echo device.

The C is expected to ship in September and will retail for $199.  You can receive a 20% by signing up for the Sol Early Adopter program.
