WTFactory SlimClip VR Steady iPhone case review

Most of us need to stay connected to their iPhones when we exercise. You shouldn’t take calls and texts on the gym floor (except in emergencies), but music and workout apps are essential to many of our fitness regimens. The Wonderful Things Factory (WTFactory for short) has designed an iPhone case that’s a unique alternative to the arm bands and waist packs that you see around the gym, track, or trail. They claim that it is the world’s thinnest clip case for active lifestyles, and I have been testing SlimClip V4 Steady iPhone case for a month to see how it works in real-world situations.

Let’s go get sweaty!

Design and Build

The SlimClip Case V4 boasts a simple and rugged design, made specifically for the iPhone 6/6S/7 and Plus models. It’s a snap-on style sleeve made from a shock-proof, rubber coated plastic to provide impact protection during physical activities. The case is a bumper-style cover that wraps the back, corners, and sides of the phone. The rim of the bumper is raised to provide additional protection from drops & bumps. The base of the phone is open to allow full access to your audio and lightning ports, with enlarged openings for your camera lens and access to the iPhone silencer switch. Overall the build is tight and precise, with no stray bits of plastic or loose components. The cover snaps firmly into place when installed, and I haven’t noticed any loosening after several weeks of taking the phone in and out of the case.

The SlimClip is a fitness accessory, and here is where its unique design features come into play. It is super thin, adding only 3mm to the overall depth of the phone. Even though it’s thin, the shockproof material adds enough protection to survive bumps and drops (as I have found out in the gym, as you’ll see below). The back panel is cut in such a way that it slides onto your waistband or pocket… kind of like a paper clip. When in place, the phone hangs upside down with the media plug is at the top, which makes it easier to manage your headphones. It makes for a very streamlined packaged that adds very little bulk or weight to your phone.

To the Gym!

I usually hit the gym 5-6 times a week for weight training, cardio, and isometric workouts. While I am not a runner, I am a daily dog-walker. After a month of putting the SlimClip through its paces, I think it does a good job of delivering on its intended purpose. It’s minimalist, super-slim, and does a good job protecting your phone from accidental drops and bumps.

Where you attach the phone is important. There’s no additional grip to the SlimClip to help it stay in place once attached, so it can come loose if you whack it during your workout. After bouncing my phone off the gym floor several times, I learned that it’s a good idea to position it away from my elbows. I think this is really an adjustment issue because I am not used to this style of phone. Fortunately, the case does a good job of protecting the phone if it hits the ground.

There are a few usability issues that I discovered during extended use. Attaching the phone to your waistband is a two-handed exercise, which isn’t as convenient as gator-style or raised clips you’ll find on other cases. It’s not too bad if you are attaching it at the hip, but takes some contortions if you want to clip it at the small of your back. Depending on how you wish to clip your phone (and how flexible you are) this may be a consideration.

As with most fixed-position clips, there’s no easy way to access the phone controls without stopping, removing the phone, doing your thing, and re-clipping. It’s a minor annoyance in practice that became more apparent over time, especially if I accidentally activated the voice controls in the middle of an exercise (I really wish Apple would give us a way to disable that!). This is a common issue with clip-style phones, however. If you are comfortable using voice controls to manage your phone or don’t access your phone at all during workouts, I suspect that you’ll never notice this.

>For outdoor use, you should know that the SlimClip does not provide any protection from the elements, nor is your screen protected. It’s something to consider if you do a lot of rough outdoor activity or like to run when the weather turns nasty.

Conclusions and Pricing

After making some adjustments to the design, I’m very happy with the performance of the SlimClip Case. It’s ridiculously thin, offers good protection, and stays out of the way during most fitness activities. If you are looking for a streamlined alternative to bulky armbands or waist packs, this may be a good choice for you if you don’t need the additional protection for weather or really rough outdoor activities. I’ve also found it to be a great day-to-day phone case that slips easily into your pocket, yet offers the additional convenience to attach to your front pocket if needed.

The WTFactory SlimClip V4 Steady iPhone case retails for between $20 and $40 depending on the model. For more information, visit SlimClipCase.com.

Orbino SE Pantera 7 Hand-stained Mahogany Leather iPhone 7 case review

It has been quite a while since I have reviewed anything from Orbino. I had forgotten how nicely done their leather products are. So much so, that you almost need a case or carrying bag to carry the case that is protecting your smart device…silly as that sounds. Their products are “made entirely by hand in Italy at the Centro Stile Orbino”. In this instance, Orbino has created a new version of their Pantera line of iPhone cases for the 7 and 7 Plus. For this review, they have sent me one for my Plus to check out.

Orbino sent me one of their latest creations, the iPhone 7 Special Edition Pantera Flap Case in Orbino’s signature hand-stained mahogany Tuscan leather. The Pantera case is gorgeous, perfectly fitted for the iPhone, engineered to “cloak your iPhone 7 in a unique and precious luxury accessory”. Italian craftsmen meticulously craft the SE Pantera in special vegetable tanned leather which is then stained by hand in their workshop.

The Pantera has a form fitted design that fits the iPhone like a glove. Two pieces of leather are stitched together by hand with premium high tensile waxed thread. All of the edging is hand applied, with 4-coat of lacquer. The stitching is truly distinctive, giving Orbino products a timeless look all there own.

The picture of the Special Edition Pantera 7 on the Orbino website is a bit misleading, it looks to be a (nearly) solid brown. But the case I received has a great deal of color variation giving the SE Pantera an interesting and unique look. In person, the case looks like it is made from stained wood. But in reality, the case is made from exquisitely finished, high-quality Italian leather.

The Pantera 7 covers 95+ percent of the iPhone, protecting its back, sides, corners, and edges.  For added protection, it also has a non-removable, rigid front flap that covers the screen when not in use. The case allows access to the iPhone’s home button even when the flap is closed.

While the flap does a good job of protecting the iPhone’s screen, it does flop around in the way occasionally when on a call, surfing the Net, watching a video, reading eBooks, etc. The rigidity of the flap keeps it from being able to be folded back out of the way.

The left side of the Pantera has two cutouts for accessing the mute and volume buttons.

The iPhone is held securely within the case by a flap that wraps over the top of the smartphone and held in place by a polished, monogrammed snap.

The right side of the case has a cutout for accessing the power button.

The base has cutouts for both speakers and the lighting port for recharging or listening to music.

This picture does a good job of showing just how rigid and contoured the front flap is. It is held closed by an embedded magnetic closure system.

The back has a cutout for the iPhone’s camera assembly.

Orbino also offers an optional removable spring loaded combination belt clip and desk stand in polished palladium metal. The belt clip is just as nicely engineered and finished as the Pantera iPhone case itself.

The highly polished clip is bi-directional that not only holds your iPhone securely on your belt but upright on your desk or aircraft plane tray for easier hands-free viewing as well.

The Pantera 7 is available in a wide range of leathers and colors.

The Pantera 7 is gorgeous, handmade from some of the finest materials in the world, and fits the latest & greatest iPhone like a glove. This type of high-quality accessory is definitely a luxury item, costing a decent percentage of the device itself. And yes, I know that you can get a smartphone case for under five bucks these days but that isn’t the point. The Orbino Special Edition Pantera 7 handstained mahogany leather iPhone 7 case has an old world style, eye-catching design, and level of craftsmanship difficult to find in today’s hectic, mass-produced existence. The case is not only protective but definitely, stands out in a crowded field.

iPhone case made of aramid is light as paper but stronger than steel

You’ve no doubt heard of carbon fiber, but have you heard of aramid? How about kevlar? Kevlar is a trade name for aramid fibers which is short for “aromatic polyamide”. They are lightweight fibers with exceptional strength and thermal stability, making this material a perfect choice for an iPhone case like these new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus cases from Pitaka.

The cases are very thin and weigh less than 10g while remaining scratch resistant and grippy.

They are available in several colors including the ones you see here.

Unlike some metal phone cases, the aramid cases cause no interference to WiFi, GPS or your cellular signal.

The Pitaka aramid cases are priced at $47.99 for the iPhone 7 version and $49.99 for the iPhone 7 Plus version. For more info visit ipitaka.com and order one at a discount through Amazon. Also look for our review coming soon.

Totallee iPhone 7 Plus case review

I have the iPhone 7 Plus, which is a big phone at 5.5 inches. I often look for the thinnest case possible to fit into my back pocket or small handbag. I still want protection, but without all the bulk. Totallee has released a super thin iPhone case called “the scarf”. Let’s take a look at how it fits the iPhone.

I was given the frosted white and navy blue colors.  I like the white since it matches my silver iPhone 7 Plus and recently have been sporting the navy blue to change it up. Both cases are slightly frosted/transparent.

The case is only 0.02″ thin and made of plastic. It covers the back of the iPhone completely, as well as the sides.

The front of the case also protects the edges but doesn’t give a lot of padding.  I have dropped my phone plenty of times and to my surprise I haven’t had any dings yet with the scarf case-even on the front of the phone!

The speaker holes line up well and audio sounds normal. Some cases cover up the phone microphone and make them muffled, but with the scarf, there are no issues.

The power and volume buttons also lined up perfectly, and I was able to access them without any problems.

The camera is covered nicely, and the cutouts line up perfectly. The only thing I found a bit annoying is that the case scratches easily. I supposed that’s better than my iPhone getting scratched however.

I really enjoy using Totallee’s scarf case, as it gives me the grip I like and protection I need, without the bulk. Totallee includes a 2-year warranty for all purchases. For the price, it’s an excellent choice for anyone who is just looking for some minimal protection. Just keep in mind that if you tend to drop your phone a lot, there isn’t much thickness to the case. For me, it wasn’t a problem.
