SNAP! Grip Bluetooth Shutter Grip with Phone Case Review

REVIEW – As a frequent hiker and nature enthusiast, I always take my Canon camera with me to capture the great views and wildlife that is abundant here in Colorado. The problem we run into, especially on more challenging hikes, is that the camera bag and lenses really add a lot weight and sometimes affect whether we attempt a particular hike. Also, I’ve found taking pictures with the iphone isn’t always really ergonomic and I tend to drop my phone quite a bit trying to get the right shot, what can I say I’m a little clumsy. When I got the opportunity to review the SNAP! Grip Bluetooth Shutter, I thought this could be the perfect way to use my iphone and ditch the heavy camera and bag.

What is it?

The SNAP! is an attachment to your phone that has a manual trigger to allow you to grip the phone as you would a camera and trigger a photo. Additionally, it is a Bluetooth connection that allows you to set up your phone and then take a picture from a distance using a remote control. It is standard tripod compatible as well. Finally, you can use it with a clamp that fits most phones or in conjunction with a SNAP! phone case that has an intrinsic mount.

  • Battery
  • Optional Clamp
  • Accessory Bag
  • Optional Purchase: SNAP! Case with Intrinsic Mount (shown below)

Design and features

The SNAP! Grip has a sleek and minimalist design. Very straight forward with a removal button on the grip that slides out and can be taken with you to snap pictures from a distance via the Bluetooth connection.

Setup

With either the case or the clamp, you simply put the grip over the bracket and screw down the wheel to attach the grip. With the case that was provided, you did need to remove a protective cover to access the bracket. Simply hold down the trigger for about 3-5 seconds until a green led flashes, then go into your Bluetooth pairing settings to get the grip paired to your phone. To remove the grip, simply hold the phone upside down and undo the screw mechanism to release.

This is the bracket on the SNAP case.

Here is the grip mounted on the bracket.

Final mounting and setting up of the case with grip.

The grip will mount on any standard tripod, here it is attached to a mini-tripod.

Here is the clamp, this has been put on my wife’s iphone 7.

And here’s the grip attached to clamp.

Finally, here is the phone mounted to a tripod with the Bluetooth remote control removed and ready for taking pictures away from the camera.

Performance

Once you open up your camera app, you just need to point and click the trigger, which I found was a much more natural physical movement than trying to hit the shutter button or volume down button on the side of my iPhone X. I also found it great when trying to take a selfie, as it gives you something extra to hold onto and again the easy trigger button.

There is really one area that could use improvement and that is the functionality of the Bluetooth connection and execution. Many times when opening the phone and camera app, I would line up the photo but when I clicked the trigger button, it would just turn up the volume on the phone each time I clicked. There was nothing in the manual about how to fix this issue, and it was random when it resolved and let you resume taking pictures. The other issue with the Bluetooth was when switching between camera and anything involving the keyboard. I would try to forward an image or switch to respond to a text message and the keyboard would not be available. The manual said to simply click the button again but this did not work in several attempts to fix. It becomes frustrating and I found the best actual fix was to switch off Bluetooth altogether on my phone, then turn it back on when I wanted to resume taking pictures.

What I like

  • Easy Bluetooth connection
  • Natural grip that turns the phone into the feel of a point-and-click camera
  • Tripod mount and remote control feature really help take group photos or get yourself set up for a distance photo to capture a scene.
  • Clamp on or case mounting bracket is easy to use and attach, nothing complicated about this device.

What needs to be improved

  • Bluetooth functionality needs some work in conjunction with other features on phone.
  • Does get a bit bulky trying to carry in pocket with grip attached. Need to have either large pockets or be prepared to take the grip off when not in use.

Final thoughts

Overall I was very impressed with the SNAP! Grip. It performed as intended while allowing us to go on a hike without having to lug around our heavy backpack. The iPhone camera is high enough quality that the downgrade from Canon to a phone camera isn’t the worst tradeoff, so I will be taking this grip with me on many future adventures. With a few software improvements on the Bluetooth function, I would be even more enthusiastic about this product. For the casual photographer or for those who only use their phones to take pictures, this adds some real value and makes it much easier to take pictures. Additionally, there are a multitude of add-ons available in the product brochure for lenses and additional accessories if you’re a serious photographer and want to get more creative with the phone camera. While I tested this solely on iPhone devices, it is also Android compatible with the clamp feature.

Price: $44.99 – this includes the clamp feature. It will cost more with the phone case included, as can be found on Amazon for $66.99 – this was the product package I received for review.

Cotton Carrier CCS G3 camera harness review

REVIEW – I have lost count of how many camera harnesses I have tried and/or purchased while in search of one that is really comfortable and that can be worn for extended periods of time when on a long photo shoot. While it seems somewhat enclosed and possibly restrictive, the Cotton Carrier CCS G3 Grey Harness-2 claims to be adequately up to the task. Let’s see if they put their money where their claims are.

What is it?

The Cotton Carrier CCS G3 Camera Harness System is designed to support one or two cameras. The harness and the side holster allow for the versatile support of 2 DSLR camera bodies and lenses and distribute the weight evenly so that it can be utilized for long periods of time while leaving your hands free when you are not shooting.

1 x Demonstration Leaflet
1 x Wanderer Holster
2 x Camera Mounting –Hubs with washers
2 x Allen Keys
2 x Tether Split Rings
1 x Camera Rain Cover
2 x Camera –Hub Mounting Bolts

Design and features

On the front of the harness, there is a center mount for one camera, adjustable shoulder buckles, an adjustable side buckle, a clipped on pouch holder that contains the weather cover, and a lens hold-down strap across the bottom. As shown in the pictures above, there are also 2 stash pockets for small accessories.

The back of the harness is flat with the adjustable buckles on each side.

With this harness, there is the ability to add a second camera mount on the side.

The pictures below show the clip-on pouch and the weather cover that is attached to and contained within the pouch.

Performance

The harness is very comfortable and as seen below, it fit my model very well.

The picture below shows the harness with one DSLR and lens on the center mount.

The next 2 pictures show the harness with two DSLR cameras mounted.

What I like

  • The design
  • The build quality
  • The comfort
  • The versatility

What can be improved

  • A better strap adjustment system that is less tedious when micro-adjusting the straps for the best fit

Final thoughts

As an active photographer, I am always looking for easy and comfortable ways to safely carry 2 camera bodies with lenses and to be able to freely move around when doing so. One of the issues with many DSLR harnesses is that after a while they create fatigue on your body including your shoulders and back. This harness works very well, and after using it for a while, I did not feel any of the expected fatigue. While it is not made of leather like many others, it is strong and the material is breathable so that it remains cool while being worn. I give it a well done, and two thumbs up!!

Look brighter in your video chats or vlogs with Lume Cube AIR VC

NEWS – Have you ever tried to video chat with someone, post live on Facebook or shoot a vlog, only to find that the video is muddy and dull because there simply wasn’t enough ambient light? Lume Cube, a provider of lightweight, portable lighting solutions has a solution with the Lume Cube AIR VC lighting kit for video conferencing.

The kit comes with a suction cup mount that allows you to attach the light to phones, laptops, desktop monitors, tablets – essentially anything with a smooth surface.  Beyond the suction cup mount, it can also be mounted to any standard tripod mount or attached to any magnetic surface.

It comes with two different diffusers.  The first, a white diffuser, softens the harshness of the light and provides bright white light.  The second, a yellowish warming diffuser, provides more flattering light for faces. The light is daylight balanced at 5600K, provides a 60-degree beam angle and 400 lux brightness at 100% power. For reference, 300-500 lux is typical for assembly halls and retail space, so at 400 lux, this light will provide sufficient light for a well-lit video call.

The difference between using ambient room light and adding supplemental lighting makes a dramatic difference in the quality of your video.  This is important for vloggers trying to build an audience, remote workers making a video call to the office and parents trying to provide a quality experience when the grandkids are FaceTiming with grandparents.

At 1.6″ x 1.6″ x 1.1″ and two ounces, the light is small and easy to carry.  Its non-replaceable lith-ion polymer battery has a claimed runtime of 2.5 hours at 50% brightness and 30-45 minutes at full brightness.  Controls for power and the four lighting levels are handled via a single button or via Bluetooth through the Lume-X app. A micro USB cable is included, but you have to use your own charger or simply use your laptop or PC USB port to recharge the light.

Lume Cube AIR VC is available directly from Lume Cube or Apple for $79.95.

The Feelworld Master Series MA5 is a feature packed on-camera monitor

NEWS – When I am not out and about taking pictures either as a professional photographer or for my own pleasure, my other business is as a videographer. Both of these jobs require gear that is viewed as mandatory and gear that is driven by personal desire. Video gear is as expensive as photography gear and in most cases even more expensive. When shooting video, there are many accessories that help to improve the experience and the ability to do a great job. One accessory that I own and have multiple variations of is an on-camera monitor. This is a great tool that allows you to properly see what you are recording, and depending on its capabilities, it also allows you to assess the quality of the footage as you shoot. Good feature-packed on-camera monitors can be quite expensive ranging from several hundred dollars to thousands of dollars.

Recently someone recommended to me the Feelworld Master Series MA5 monitor. This monitor in a 5 inch LED on-camera monitor with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. It is capable of both 4:3 and 16:9 screen format, and it has an HDMI input and output as well as an audio out. The HDMI supports resolutions from 480i all the way through 4k 4096x2160p and has a left/right viewing angle of 80 degrees from each side. It comes with hardware mounting options, cables, a sunshade, and a case as a part of the package.

If you would like to read more about this monitor go to the Momanplay website. It sells for the relatively inexpensive price of $169 on Amazon.

The Magbox Softbox may be the only softbox I will need

NEWS – Over the years I have purchased many photography softboxes that I have used in every relevant shoot to achieve the proper lighting and lighting effect. Usually, I use one Speedlite flash with a softbox, or I use a strobe flash with a softbox when I need more power which is more likely when I am outdoors. In order to be prepared for any and every possibility that can arise when on a shoot, photographers carry a lot of equipment or have a lot of equipment at the ready in the studio. When traveling to locations, it would really nice to be able to just carry one softbox configuration that can meet all of my lighting needs.

Magnet Mod is an established company that makes really well made and versatile lighting equipment. Their latest product is called the Magbox. It is one solid piece softbox umbrella with magnets in the base. The magnets allow for the attachment of the MagRing and then MagShoe to create an amazingly versatile system. The MagRing also allows for the use of 2 flashes simultaneously if you need to ramp up the power, and there are also diffusers and integrated gels that can be added to the mix. The following picture shows the components that together provide an amazing solution.

If you are as interested in the Magbox softbox as I am, you can head over to their Indiegogo crowdfunding page for all of the details and to take advantage of the early bird specials. You can also go to the Magnet Mod website to see the rest of their amazing products. In addition, you can go to the B&H Photo Video website and preorder the MagBox starter kit for $289.95 or the MagBox 24 Octa Pro Kit for $499.95
