Exist app knows if tweets, emails or working out makes you happier

Is there an app that can figure out what makes you happy, productive, and active? Hello Code’s Exist for iOS and Android thinks it can. This app gathers data from your Twitter account, email account, local weather, Google Fit, Withings, Fitbit, Instagram, Facebook, and other accounts to draw conclusions about your moods and behaviors.

The app gives you the ability to add any tag that you’d like to your day like sick, headache, vacation, travel, etc. and will then use these tags with the rest of your correlated data to show you trends for your behavior and activities. Some trends might be that you’re more active on Mondays, or that you say you’re happier on days when you don’t receive as many emails, or that you’re sad on days when you send more tweets.

You can also use the app to track habits like flossing, working out, etc and receive a weekly email showing an overview of everything that happened.

The Exist app is free, but the service costs US$6/month with a free 30-day trial so you can get an idea of what types of info it can tell you about yourself before you actually start paying for it.

These days, we all use so many different services, that it’s interesting to see how the data fits together to form the puzzle of your days and weeks.

Need to watch your mobile data use? Try the Datally Android app by Google

Datally is an app created by Google to help Android users save on mobile data. “It blocks background data and lets you control which apps use data.” It also helps you find WiFi networks nearby and lets you know how other Datally users have rated that WiFi network before you connect.

When you install Datally, you must set up the app. It requires the following permissions:

  • Phone (“Used to help you monitor your phone’s mobile data usage. Datally doesn’t make or receive phone calls on your behalf.”)
  • Location (“Used to show you high-quality WiFi networks nearby.”)
  • SMS (“In select countries, this enables you to check your mobile data balance with your carrier and to get smarter recommendations on how to save mobile data.”)
  • VPN – sets up a local VPN in order to “block unwanted mobile data usage – it doesn’t send any of your traffic through Google’s servers. The Datally VPN is only on your phone and doesn’t redirect your Internet traffic to any other servers or locations.”).
  • Usage access – to see which apps are using data.

It is a very straight-forward app that has the “Data Saver On/Off” sliding toggle prominently displayed on the homepage.

If you would like to manage which apps can use data, you simply need to tap on the “Manage data” button on the homepage and then tap the lock icon next to the apps you wish to change.

To view the WiFi networks near you, you need to tap on the “Find Wi-Fi” button on the homepage of the app. You will then get a list of WiFi networks near you, how far away they are from your location, whether or not a password or web login is required, and thumbs up or down icons indicating user ratings for that network.

Datally will even give you real-time data use information as you use the apps on your phone (displayed as a small bubble in the app you are using – see above screenshot) – that is, as long as you do not have any Accessibility services turned on.

While you do have access to turning off background data use for each app through your device settings under your Data Usage section, Datally makes it a little easier to manage. So, if you have to watch how much data you use, Datally is certainly worth a try! Check it out on Google Play.

Samsung teams up with The Weather Channel to bring new functionality to weather app

The Weather Channel App for Samsung, which was released in 2016, offers exclusive functionality to users of the soon-to-be-released Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ devices and older devices like the S7, S6 and Note 5. The latest feature to be added to the Weather Channel App for Samsung includes Google calendar event syncing and Lyft ride requests. The Google calendar syncing will link a user’s events with weather forecasts for their selected location to provide the weather forecast for those specific events. Now users can also book a ride to the event using the Lyft app. The Lyft feature is now accessible for app users within the U.S., and The Weather Channel for Samsung App is accessible globally within the Galaxy Apps store.

Get one free Android app from Google every week!

Google recently quietly rolled out a new section on Google Play. It’s called Free App of the Week and it is wonderful!

Both Apple and Amazon have had similar programs for years now, highlighting a particular paid app and providing it for free for a limited time. Google has finally caught up and created a program for Android users.

There are countless free apps offered on Google Play already, but these are mostly pay-to-play apps that use their “free” pricing to get you to purchase endless amounts of in-game items. The Free App of the Week program gives away a priced app for free.

This week the app being given away is Card Wars – Adventure Time, which is usually priced at $2.99. After the week is over it will revert to its regular price and hopefully, a new, fun app will take its place.
