TCL’s new 65-inch 6 Series might just be the best TV value of 2018

This is an exciting time of the year if you’re looking to buy a new TV. The new models showcased at CES in January are starting to hit the shelves. One of the year’s most intriguing offerings comes from TCL. They made a splash last year with their popular and highly rated 55-inch P Series 4K HDR TV with built-in Roku functionality. Priced at $649, it produced one of the best 4K HDR images of any budget tv available in 2017. This year they have added a new flagship model, the 6 Series.

The 6 Series has the same Roku TV smart platform, but TCL has upped the ante with an impressive list of new features, a larger 65-inch screen size, and a new bold, brushed metal design.

This set is loaded with features usually found on TVs costing $2-$3,000. But the TCL 6 Series is priced at a very budget friendly $1,000.

The one feature that stands out for me is the 120 dimming zones. Full-array local dimming is what allows LED TVs to darken dark areas of the screen and boost bright areas of the screen, making for better contrast and richer colors. The more zones there are the better the local dimming is. With 120 dimming zones, the 6 Series should produce a great picture with darker blacks and brighter brights. I would love to get my hands on this TV to see how it performs in a living room setting.

It’s way too early to say that the TCL 6 Series is the best value of 2018. But with an impressive list of features at a price tag that other manufacturers just can’t touch, it promises to be on a very short list.

The TCL 6 Series 65-inch 4K HDR TV is available on Amazon for $999.99. It’s also available in a 55-inch model for just $649.99.

Sharp is bringing the first 8K TV to Europe

At the IFA ’18 Global Press conference today in Rome, Sharp announced that they will be bringing the first 8K TV in Europe. The Sharp Aquos LC-70X500E is a 70-inch TV, but Sharp says that larger Sharp 8K TVs aren’t far off in the future. And by large, they mean wallpaper sized up to 150 inches! Perhaps that is a hint of their plans at IFA come September?

Today, TVs that are 70 inches and over account for just 0.4% of the European TV market, while TVs that are 55 to 59 inches in size are currently the dominating biggest segment in the European market. But Sharp says that 8K is destined to change all of that.

Sharp made a good point during their presentation, and that is that even if you have a larger 75-inch display hanging in your living room, you still have a lot of empty wall space surrounding it. It’s not just that 8K offers more 3D-like, realistic picture quality, but that it enables larger screens at home, and that is what consumers want. Do I want a 150 inch TV? Hell, yes – sign me up.

So you might be thinking, yes – that 8K sounds great, but where can you get content for it? For starters, Sharp’s Aquos LC-70X500E upscales content to 8K. It turns out that YouTube already supports 8k. Netflix is starting to embrace 8K too, as they recently shot Lost in Space in 8K. There is currently a Japanese broadcaster that has started shooting in 8K, and European broadcasters have plans to soon start shooting sports events in 8K too. So it isn’t too soon at all to jump on the 8K bandwagon – as long as you can afford it.

The Sharp Aquos LC-70X500E will retail for $11,990 Euro (yikes!) and it goes on sale end of April.

Vizio’s new P-Series Quantum TV produces the purest blacks and brightest brights

On Tuesday Vizio unveiled their new 2018 flagship TV, the P-Series Quantum. The 65″ P-Series Quantum 4K HDR Smart TV is billed as Vizio’s brightest TV so far, with 2,000 nits of peak brightness.

Quantum Dot technology makes this display capable of producing over one billion colors with “cinematic color intensity”.

Purest black levels

Vizio’s Active Full Array Max backlight with 192 local dimming zones produces pure deep blacks with stunning contrast.

A 240Hz effective refresh rate creates a significantly smoother, consistent and more natural picture.

The display also comes with built-in Google Chromecast, Vizio’s SmartCast OS featuring apps like Netflix, Vudu, and Prime Video and voice control with Amazon Alexa and Google enabled devices.

The updated look of the new P-series features both an immersive bezel-less screen and minimalist polished legs.

I own a 2016 P-series, and it has the best picture quality of any TV I’ve ever owned. With its 2,000 nits of peak brightness, Quantum Dots, and deeper blacks the P-Series Quantum just might be a worthy upgrade.

Vizio’s 2018 P-Series Quantum priced at $2,199 will be available later this summer.

Samsung’s The Frame smartTV is an art installation for your home

Have you seen those HGTV home-decorating shows where one person in the couple refuses to have a TV in the living room or even in the family room?  I’ve never understood that mentality.  I love my TV, and I want to have it in the room with comfy chairs so I can be comfortable watching The Walking Dead or Supernatural.  I will admit that my 65″ TV with black bezel and a black stand isn’t the most beautiful accessory in my living room when it’s turned off, however.  With the Samsung The Frame 4K UHD smartTV, your TV can look like a framed piece of art when you aren’t watching programming.
