Enhance your outdoor activities with new Zungle smart sunglasses

As a glasses wearer, I know that wearing any type of earphone with the glasses can be uncomfortable at best.  Zungle takes care of that problem by incorporating Bluetooth headphones into the frame of their sunglasses themselves.  And they added a dedicated A. I. Voice Assistant button that launches Siri or Google Assistant automatically.  Zungle has new, second versions of both their Viper (square-shaped lenses) and Lynx (rounded-shape lenses) sunglasses available for pre-order now.  Read on for more details about these new sunglasses.

Zungle sunglasses are powered by two 3.7V 120mAh lithium power batteries that charge in less than one hour by Pogo-pin charging.  The batteries provide 4 hours of play time and 100 hours of standby time.  With an IPX4 sweat-resistance rating, you’ll be safely able to wear these smart sunglasses even while you’re working out.

Zungle uses Bluetooth 5.0 (A2DP profile 1.3 / HFP profile 1.7 / HSP profile 1.2) to connect to any smartphone, tablet, or computer with Bluetooth functionality.  The wireless range is 30 feet.  Not only will you be able to listen to music, but you’ll also be able to make and take phone calls, too.

Since using earphones that block ambient sounds can be dangerous in outdoor environments, Zungle protects your awareness of your surroundings with an open-ear solution to allow you to ride a bike or run without sacrificing sound quality or safety.  They use new Vibra speakers with stronger dual-spring bone conduction speakers on each leg.  This new sound system was developed through Zungle’s partnership with a speaker manufacturer that also produces devices for major tech companies like Samsung and Sony.

The dedicated A. I. Voice Assistant button on one leg connects you with Siri or Google Assistant with a single click.

The frames measure 5.6 x 6.3 x 2 inches and weigh 1.8 ounces.  Zungle has designed the Viper (second image) and Lynx (first image) glasses with replaceable front frames.  They’ll be launching a front-frames subscription plan as they design new frames, so you can mix up the appearance of your glasses.

The lenses are UV400 / Polarized and FDA-certified.  Viper glasses are available with a matte black, matte gray, or matte white frame and eight lens colors to select from.  Lynx glasses have matte black or matte gray frames with two lens colors.  Additional replacement lenses can be purchased for $19.99 for either frame.

Right now, Zungle is offering pre-orders for these version 2.0 sunglasses.  The Viper glasses and two extra sets of lenses have a limited-time price of $109.99 for pre-orders, with the price increasing as the pre-order period expires.  Normal price is $189.99 for Viper with no extra lenses.  Lynx glasses start at $139.99 in the limited-time period, with the price increasing through the pre-order period.  Normal price is $189.99 for Lynx.  Zungle says these pre-orders will be among the earliest sent out when the shipments begin in July.  Learn more and pre-order your sunglasses now at the Zungle website.

Knockaround G. I. Joe Premiums are real American eyewear

As a Child of the 80s I grew up watching such animated TV classics as The Transformers and Thundercats. But due to its roots way back in the early 1960s, one show transcended them all and became an American pop-culture icon—G. I. Joe: A Real American Hero! I was totally stoked to stumble upon these awesome G. I. Joe Premiums shades from Knockaround. With their matte woodland camo frames and red, white and blue striping on the arms, they are a fitting homage to the epic battles between the G. I. Joe team and evil terrorist Cobra Command. These shades have orange mirrored polarized lenses and UV400 sun protection. Also included is a custom G. I. Joe sunglasses box, a microfiber drawstring storage pouch with images of G. I. Joe First Sergeant Duke and Cobra Commander, a G. I. Joe 1st issue comic collector’s card and a Knockaround logo sticker. These G. I. Joe Premiums shades are available for $30. Deploy your troops to knockaround.com for more info or to order.

Gunnar Work-Play Infinite eyewear review

For years I’ve been an IT guy and now recently am doing web development, so the time I sit at a computer has increased tremendously. My eyes never seem to get a break from a bright computer monitor or mobile phone now that we’re in an always-online world. GUNNAR Optiks has introduced a new set of glasses that protect eyes from digital screens as well as transition to sunglasses for outdoor protection. Let’s check out how these worked for me!

What is it?

The GUNNAR Work-Play Infinite lens, designed by Publish, is a dual-purpose lifestyle lens designed for indoor blue light protection from digital screens which then transitions to a sunglass for outdoor protection from UV light and the sun’s rays.

Hardware specs

  • Steel eyeglass frames with adjustable nose pads
  • lens width: 2.04 in
  • nose: 0.86 in
  • frame width: 5.9 in
  • temple: 5.7 in
  • weight: 0.88 oz
  • Blue-Light Protection Factor (BPF) of 65 indoors and 90 outdoors

What’s in the box?

  • GUNNAR Work-Play Infinite eyeglasses
  • warranty and user guide

Design and features

The GUNNAR Work-Play glasses I received are the “Infinite” style, which are made of a gold painted steel, round frame, and nosepads. They are very trendy and super comfortable. If you’re familiar with GUNNAR computer eyewear, the tint of the frame is yellow so as to remove any blue light from a computer or mobile device screen. As mentioned early, the special feature of the Work-Play lens is that they transition to sunglasses in about 45 seconds when going outdoors.

Performance

These GUNNAR Work-Play glasses were very comfortable to wear at work all day. My co-workers complimented me on the style, and I got used to the yellow tint of the lens after twenty minutes or so. At lunch, I wore them outside and did see them darken in about a minute, but I wish they were as dark as my normal sunglasses.

What I like

  • Sturdy but lightweight
  • Stylish
  • Fit very well all around
  • No pulling on the sides of my hair or digging into my nose

What needs to be improved

  • I wish the lens tint was a bit darker for the bright sun we’ve been having lately. They aren’t dark as regular sunglasses

Final thoughts

In my opinion, the GUNNAR Work-Play glasses are a worthy investment for your eyes if you sit at a computer screen all day long. My eyes felt pretty comfortable at the end of the day, and I didn’t get tired of wearing them any more than my normal glasses. The fact that they transition for the sun outdoors is pretty nifty, but they just need to be slightly darker to be practical.

Price: $99.99
Where to buy: The GUNNAR Work-Play Infinite can be purchased on their site in gold, onyx, and plan or with a prescription.

SportRX.com prescription sunglasses review

If you require very strong prescription eyewear like I do (-9.00 and beyond for me), you know that the options for sunglasses are slim. Besides clip-ons, what else is there? SportRX.com has a wide selection of nearly every major brand of stylish frames plus knowledgeable staff to help you make your prescription sunglasses become reality.

When you first visit the SportRX website, prepare to be overwhelmed.  Thankfully, you can narrow down your selection by using the handy “shop by” feature on the left column.  Sort by brand, sport, price and more.

Because of my nearsightedness, I consulted with one of the experts at SportRX to help me choose. With a lot of help, I chose this pair of Oakley Crosslink frames.

When choosing the actual lenses, you’ll find SportRX walks you through many, many options.  Here, I chose polarized lenses. Note that if you do, the ultra-thin high-index 1.7 lenses are unavailable.  As you can see, Transitions (darkens in sunlight) are an option, too.

If you’re crusty like me, you can even choose bifocals or progressive focus lenses. I chose the progressive focus. Lens color is pretty straightforward: Dark Grey, amber or dark green.Mirrored finishes are really cool, and there are so many colors to choose from!  Want something less showy? The “Flash” mirror finish is a little more subtle.  I chose the Silver Flash Mirror for a hint of reflection. You can pick an anti-reflective finish, but in my case, it comes with the mirrored finish.

I didn’t know you could get an antifog coating but there it was.If you’ve ever scratched your lenses, you know how frustrating it can be.  Add some extra protection for $30.

They’ll need your pupil distance or PD.  This is something your prescribing eye care specialist can get for you or a technician.

Finally, your actual prescription.  You can upload it, email, fax or send later.

My order was completed in just over a week (there was a holiday weekend). SportRX packed in a large cleaning cloth and a small bottle of cleaning solution.

This particular brand (Oakley) comes with a large zippered case with extra temple arms in the slots. Here’s a front view of the glasses.  You can see a hint of the silver flash mirror finish.

You can see the thickness of my prescription lenses.  Yes, my eyesight is bad. However…

However, you’ll notice the lenses fit perfectly in the front.  Nice!

Here’s a dorky selfie because I couldn’t build up the courage to get someone to take a snapshot. They fit really well! The silver flash mirror finish is more apparent in this shot.

I don’t think I would have tried to attempt something new and (relatively) stylish, but the helpful people at SportRX really helped me navigate the staggering selection, and made useful suggestions that really made the difference for me.  Thank, SportRX!
