Soliom Bird S60-Outdoor Wireless Solar Home Security Camera review

REVIEW – Peace of mind. What does that mean? It’s when you don’t have any worries, fears, or stresses. Having total peace of mind is almost impossible unless you’re a Shaolin monk, but you can work towards that goal by finding ways to remove worries, fears, and stresses. One way to do that might be keeping an eye on your home, property, pets, and more when you’re not physically with them. Home security cameras are a tool that can do that for you and today I’m going to tell you all about the Soliom Bird S60-Outdoor Wireless Solar Home Security Camera. Let’s see if this one is a worthy tool in your peace of mind toolbox.

What is it?

The Soliom wire-free solar security camera is a WiFi security camera that has a built-in battery that is recharged by the sun. Unlike other solar-powered security cameras that we’ve reviewed, this one doesn’t use a separate mountable solar panel. It has the panels attached the camera’s body.

What’s in the box?

  • Mounting hardware

Design and features

This security camera has a unique design with a removable solar panel that gives the camera a bird or airplane-like vibe. The camera is between the solar panels and has a 1080p lens, status LED, light sensor, and a motion sensor below the lens.

The bottom of the camera has a threaded socket for the included mounting bracket. Also on the bottom is a micro USB connector to charge the internal battery, a micro SD card slot to record motion events, and a reset switch, all of which are protected by a flexible rubber cover that is designed to keep out moisture from the weather. You can also see a button near the front of the camera. This is a power button.

Soliom mobile app

Setting up and connecting the camera to your wireless network is pretty easy. The first step is to make sure you have fully charged the internal battery by using the included micro USB cable. Then you just have to install the Soliom app on your Android or iOS device and follow the steps.

At one point the app uses sound waves to connect to the camera. It’s a strange way to set up a security camera and I had to try it several times before I was successful, but it did work.

Launching the app will show a thumbnail view (not a real-time view) of the connected cameras. Clicking the thumbnail will go into the live view for that camera.

In the live view mode, you’ll see a real-time view from the camera along with the WiFi signal strength status, battery status, and how many people are connected to the camera at that time.

Below the real-time view window is a timeline with red bars. The bars represent events that were detected by the built-in motion sensor. You can scroll through the timeline and watch the recorded clips which are either saved to the cloud or a micro SD card (not included) inserted into the camera.

Scrolling through the timeline is a little tricky. Sometimes I would scroll to an event only to have the software snap back to the current time/live view. Other times it would try to load the event clip only to time out. And other times it would work as expected.

Another way to watch the live view is to use the built-in cruise feature which will pan across the view. This is kind of cool the first couple times you use it, but it does this digitally and as a result, the resolution isn’t as good and part of the image is cropped.

Clicking the gear icon will take you into the camera settings where you can customize various features.

There are two ways to be notified when the camera detects motion. You can have the app “call” you as shown above on the left, or you can receive a traditional notification alert on your home screen. With either method, tapping the answer or notification message will take you to the app but it will not show you a clip of the motion that actually caused the alert. It’s up to you to watch the events by scrolling through the timeline.

I noticed that I wouldn’t receive a notification every time motion was detected which was worrisome if this was your only security camera. I also noticed that when a notification did come through that clicking the notification, connecting to the camera, and trying to watch the detected event would often take too long to be useful.

What I like

  • Solar powered
  • Removable solar panels for optional indoor/power tethered use
  • No monthly subscriptions

What needs to be improved

  • Speed connecting to camera from app can be too slow and will sometimes time out
  • Record all footage to micro SD card instead of just the motion clips
  • Need to add detection zones and scheduled recording times
  • Notifications aren’t consistent and aren’t pushed for each motion detection event

Final thoughts

The ability to set up a security camera outdoors without having to worry about wiring and power are good reasons to consider this camera. But the little issues like slow connections, inconsistent notifications, and difficulty watching motion clips, keep me from recommending it. I think this camera could be good, but as it stands now, it needs some improvements.

See tall and wide with the new Remo+ RemoBell S video doorball

NEWS – Getting a good view from a video doorbell has always been a challenge.  Remo+, maker of the DoorCam over-the-door wireless video camera has introduced the RemoBell S video doorbell with 180-degree viewing angles both vertically and horizontally.

Nicely styled, the RemoBell S will fit in with most decors. Rated for -4 degrees to +122 degrees fahrenheit, it should survive most climates, unless of course, you’re anywhere in the northern part of the US this polar vortex winter.

Video is recorded at full HD 1080p (1556 x 1536) and h.264 compression.  The doorbell comes with rolling three-day cloud storage included and longer, paid options available. Remo+ offers both IOS and Android apps for smart-device connectivity. Home automation integration is available through Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and IFTTT.  The RemoBell S and its app combine for two-way audio, push notifications, user-definable motion zones, night vision, and live view.  You can create up to five account users so the whole family can access the doorbell.  The app also has a dewarping feature that promises to make the video appear more normal and not curved, like the video from competitors.  The RemoBell S operates off 16 and 24 VAC systems and is hardwired to your existing doorbell wiring.

With its wide field of view, free cloud storage, low price, and good looks, RemoBell S is a compelling new entry into the crowded video doorbell market. RemoBell S is priced at $99 and available from Remo+.

Arlo rolls out new Ultra 4K wireless security camera

NEWS– The home security camera market has become quite crowded in the last few years. Arlo’s latest camera, the Arlo Ultra, announced in late 2018 and on display at CES 2019, seeks to distinguish itself from the pack with features that include 4K video, 2-way audio, and an integrated spotlight.

My first generation Arlo camera has been pulling front porch duty at my home for 4 years now. While it’s served me well, save for a warranty replacement due to pink video resulting from a stuck IR filter, the video quality has ceased to impress me. Also, after looking at my neighbor’s Ring doorbell cameras and their ability to stream conversations, I became convinced that I needed to add audio to my home security camera package.

Enter the Arlo Ultra. In addition to the increased video quality, the Ultra boasts numerous enhancements to the original Arlo, including some that surpass what’s available in the current Arlo Pro 2. These include:

  • 4k Ultra HD with HDR capabilities
  • Enhanced Color Night Vision
  • Auto-zoom and tracking
  • 180-degree field of view
  • Dual noise cancelling microphones for clearer, more natural conversations
  • Built-in LED spotlights

If the new 4K video doesn’t place too much of a burden on the Ultra’s improved battery and the increased streaming demand doesn’t cause users to bump up against any of their broadband providers monthly data limits, Arlo could have a real winner on its hands with the Ultra which will be priced at $299.99. Head over to Arlo.com for more details on this new camera.

Ring’s new Door View Cam offers up a new point of view

NEWS – Ring, maker of the popular video doorbell recently showed off their latest offering at CES 2019, the Ring Door View Cam. The Ring Door View Cam video doorbell essential replaces your door’s peephole with a smart, compact HD camera.

Door View sends you mobile notifications when anyone presses the built-in doorbell button, knocks on the door or triggers the motion sensors. Answer the notification to see and speak to the person from anywhere on your phone or tablet. Or you can quickly look thru your traditional peephole to see who’s knocking.

Door View Cam offers 1080p HD video with two-way talk, a peephole with privacy cover, adjustable motion detection, and rechargeable battery.

Like all of Ring’s current doorbells, Door View works with Alexa and Google Assistant.

The Door View Cam is easy to install, simply unscrew your existing peephole and put the Door View Cam in its place. And Ring states it can be used on any door with an existing peephole.

Price for the Door View Cam when it’s released “later this year” will be the same as the company’s Video Doorbell 2, $199.

LifeShield’s New HD Video Doorbell is a great addition to their home security automated system

NEWS – Last year, I tested and reviewed LifeShield’s DIY Home Security System that included a modern security base and panel along with a security camera and all of the necessary security accessories. This is a completely wireless security system although the base station does include the option for using an Ethernet cable and beyond your wireless network, there is cell service built in for continuous monitoring. Since I tested and reviewed the system, it has remained installed in my home as the security system of choice and has performed all functions reliably and effectively.

Now there is a new addition to add even more flexibility and automation. LifeShield has just announced the new HD Video Doorbell that can be added to their existing system and allow for video monitoring of anyone near your door. According to LifeShield, “The new Wi-Fi-enabled doorbell camera, featuring full 1080p HD video resolution and two-way audio support, allows homeowners to screen visitors with clarity and engage them in conversation through the LifeShield mobile app or security touchpad. The video doorbell can be installed and operated through hardwire or via an optional rechargeable battery. The LifeShield HD Video Doorbell also features sophisticated day and night vision modes, giving homeowners the ability to see approaching visitors at any time of the day, including in low light or cloudy conditions. Through the LifeShield home security system, homeowners can record and store media clips, and watch it live on-demand at their convenience. The camera’s motion detection technology can distinguish between people and other objects, preventing unneeded notifications and recordings.”

With the recent explosion of package thefts of packages left at front doors and on porches, several companies have released video doorbells. LifeShield’s new doorbell is a common sense addition to their current security ecosystem, and if it performs as well as the rest of their equipment, it will be a well-received addition.

The new LifeShield HD Video Doorbell will be available for purchase on their website in the second quarter of 2019.
