UAG Scout Folio Series iPad Pro case review

REVIEW – My son’s middle school uses iPads for turning in and managing homework. I wanted to hold back on tech obsolescence so I picked up a 2018 iPad Pro 11 for him with the Apple Smart Keyboard Folio, which doesn’t provide a lot of protection from falls. That’s where the Urban Armor Gear (UAG) Scout Folio comes in.

What is it?

The UAG Scout Folio is a lightweight, rugged case that fits over an iPad Pro (11 or 12.9 inch 2018 model, each case sold separately) to provide extra protection. It’s important to note that the Apple Smart Keyboard Folio is required. Not tested with other keyboards or cases.

Design and features

Right out of the box, the case itself looks nothing more than a single piece snap-on design. The plastic is semi-rigid that bends slightly. Not too soft, not too hard. A dotted-line slot runs across the back, serving as the hinge.Inside the edges, I discovered a thin lip that helps keep the iPad in place.

Setup

A card is included, demonstrating how you insert the iPad.

The Smart Keyboard Folio (without iPad) goes in first (top) followed by inserting one end of the iPad Pro, then the other.

Performance

The design still allows the Apple Pencil to be charged in place with a “hook”.

Closeup of the pencil holder. The hook doesn’t really have any “grip” to the pencil. The iPad’s magnetic hold does most of the work.

The ends feature holes for speakers, charging port and microphones, and even a “bump” for the wake button. I was surprised to see the bump still provided decent tactile feedback.

The rear camera is now nicely recessed, since the case adds more thickness.

The other side is covered only by Apple’s keyboard case.

The case still allows the iPad Pro to be tiled at the two positions allowed by the keyboard.

I put the iPad Pro 11 (2018) with pencil and Smart Keyboard Folio on a scale, and it weighed in at 1 lb, 11.5 ounces. With the UAG case, 2 lbs, 3 ounces. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but it FEELS much more substantial since the case gives the overall package more “heft”.

I noticed something unusual. The bottom of the case wouldn’t always snap flush with the iPad. A simple push fixed that. If you’re obsessive about details like that, be warned.

I let my son loose with his iPad Pro and the UAG Scout Case. He never complained about the added thickness, and I rest a little easier knowing the corners are protected from the bumps and tumbles of school.

igloohome Smart Padlock review

REVIEW – I use padlocks a lot to secure many of the equipment cases that I own. A good padlock is important to make sure that my quite expensive photography and videography equipment does not grow legs and walk away. I am very much into keyless locks because having a bunch of keys not only slows things down but can really be trouble if I misplace the keys. I generally use combination locks so I was happy for the opportunity to test and review the igloohome Smart Padlock and intrigued that it can also be controlled via an app. So, here we go!!

What is it?

The igloohome Smart Padlock offers a good balance between maintaining security and being convenient. Its features include flexible access control via the built-in keypad or via the respective app, as well as an emergency access option should the long-lasting battery lose charge. There are also several layers of security to control access.

On the surface of the padlock, there is an access keypad that allows the users to open the lock via an access code. There is a LED above the keypad the lights green, blue or red depending on the action and status.

On the back of the padlock, there is an access door that covers the battery compartment and the mechanism to change the shackle. It can be opened and closed via the provided proprietary Allen key.

The photos below show the padlock opened and without and with the battery installed.

Near the top left-hand side in the back of the padlock, there is a shiny silver pin that is the release for the shackle. Once you pull it up and out you can then replace the shackle by turning it 90 degrees and then pulling it out. The 3rd photo below shows the larger shackle installed.

On the bottom of the padlock under a rubber cover, there are 2 gold pins that you can put in contact with a 9V square battery to provide power to the lock in the event that the padlock battery loses charge and you need to open it. Once the padlock has the emergency power from the 9V battery, you can then use the keypad or app to open it.

Performance

Ths padlock was easy to set up and paired with the app via Bluetooth easily and quickly. Using the keypad is very simple and the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. You can set up an Admin/Owner PIN and PINs for guests, other users, and even one-time use PINS.

The igloohome Smart padlock is an attracive and well built padlock. It offers sensible levels of security and features things like guest access and indivudially assigned access. Add the that the interchaneable shackles to fit the need or intended purpose and the fact that it is waterproof, and it qualifies as a well-rounded lock. While I am really into great security, I do cringe a bit at the price. and I am not sure if the price-to-product value would make it a convincing purchase for me. The actual device is good.

IPPINKA MKC Tab Wallet review

What is it?

It’s a full grain minimalist wallet that also organizes your keys.

What’s in the box?

You’ll get the wallet. You can also order accessories that fit the key swivels (a bottle opener and a 16 GB USB drive).

Design and features

The MKC Tab Wallet is a beautiful, simple design. Rugged style is the name of the game here. Here’s what the front and rear faces look like:

The leather quality is excellent. I’m measuring it at about 1/16″ thick, and the dye runs through the full fabric. It’s burnished but not sealed, so you’ll see some nice character and patina develop over time. The interior faces and edging are left raw, adding to the rugged character:

The wallet is sized at a compact 2.6″ by 3.75″. Access to all of your stuff is from the top of the wallet, so it forms a slim wedge-like shape that slides easily into your front pocket. The pocket on the front face is sized for a couple of cards or a small fold of cash:

The center pocket holds 4 cards (give or take), and is RFID-blocking. It also uses a vinyl strap to facilitate getting to the contents:

When you stuff your cards into that center slot, you’ll pull the tab on the front face to slide them out:

The hidden trick behind the MKC Tab Wallet is the ability to wrangle your keys. A pair of Chicago bolts create swivels that allow you to swing your keys out for use. When you get the wallet, you unscrew the caps and slide your keys onto the bolts like so:

Screw the caps back into place, and you can swing out the business end of your keys for use:

Two different sized bolts are included in the kit. The longer bolts will allow for two keys on each side, while the shorter bolts allow for one key. You can also buy additional accessories provided by IPPINKA that work with these posts. A bottle opener and a USB drive are offered. You could also fit any accessory that you may have on your current keyring that has the same size and shape as a key.

Performance

As a minimalist wallet, there’s a whole lot to like here. Day-to-day usability is excellent and straightforward with quick & easy access to all the goods. Minimalism is the key here, though, so don’t expect to carry more than 4-6 cards and maybe a few bills. I also like that the internal pocket is RFID blocking while the external pocket is not. That means I can keep my work ID (or public transportation pass) in that external pocket for quick use while keeping my credit cards protected in that middle compartment.

The integrated key management will really be a matter of personal use. You won’t be able to add chunky non-standard keys or car keys that integrate a FOB. I don’t have an issue with this because I tend to keep my car key separate anyway. Both of our cars have keyless entry and start, so I just keep that thing clipped in my bag. I also tested these slots for some keyring-style shopping cards, and they won’t fully slide into the wallet. If you have a need for standard style keys or similar accessories, however, you’ll be very happy with this arrangement.

What I like

What needs to be improved

Support for standard sized keys may not work for some users.
If you carry a lot of cards and cash on a regular basis, the size won’t work for you.

Final thoughts

I’m really liking the IPPINKA MKC Tab Wallet so far. It’s a great little design that combines excellent functionality with durable hand made leather quality. The Kickstarter just launched, so you have until July 10th to get in on this one. As of this writing, you can still get in on the limited pledge discount price at roughly $53 USD if you act quickly. Accessories are an extra charge. Estimated delivery of finished products is September 2019.

As I get older, I do find that many evenings, especially closer to the end of the week, that my legs ache and are in need of a nice massage and some form of rejuvenation. Recently, I got my hands on the SPRYNG Muscle Recovery Tool that on paper seems to be just what the doctor ordered.

What is it?

The SPRYNG is covered with a nice material that is easy to clean and yet quite sturdy. It has a nice design and velcro on the top and bottom to secure it.

The inside of the SPRYNG device is very soft and has a suede/felt-like surface that goes against the front of your leg. This makes them very comfortable to wear.

On the outer top of the tool, there is a control pad that has the LED status indicator lights, the on/off button, and the intensity and modes buttons.

To the side of the control pad, there is the charging port and infrared sensor.

Performance

The SPRYNG Muscle Recovery Tool is available in 4 colors.

The micro USB 2-headed charging cable that comes with the tool makes charging very easy. Initially, it took a couple of hours for them to be fully charged.

On the inside of each side of the tool, there is a label for which leg it is designed to be used for and how to attach the device.

The tool easily and comfortably wraps around my legs and the massaging and therapeutic effect is really nice. The ability to change the level of intensity and to have the option of more that one mode is great. What it even better, is that they each have a built-in rechargeable battery that allows me to walk around while receiving the therapy and I don’t have to worry about an AC outlet and an attached cord.

There are LED lights at the top of each control pad that are indicators for status, mode, intensity, etc.

Final thoughts

The SPRYNG Muscle Recovery Tool is the 2nd or 3rd type of device that I have tested that performs this type of massaging and therapeutic function. For me, the ability to maintain proper blood circulation especially in situations where you might be in a position with very limited mobility for extended periods of time is very important. Over the years, I have heard of many people who have suffered from blood pooling or blood clots or embolisms and some have resulted in deadly consequences. In addition, this tool takes this type of therapy to another level by adding portability and independence that makes them applicable as desired. I really like the SPRYNG and I am pretty sure that I will continue to use them often. I give the SPRYNG Tool a well done and two thumbs up!!

iClever Wi-Fi smart outdoor outlet review

REVIEW – Holiday lights, landscape lighting – what do they all need? Power! Beyond that, we want those lights to turn on and off – sometimes on a schedule, sometimes with the sun, and sometimes, just because we want them to. In the ancient past, we had to rely on outdoor power strips and timers, or, heaven forbid, walk outside and throw the switch ourselves! Well, no more! The iClever smart outdoor power strip aims to end all that drudgery.

What is it?

This is a two-outlet power strip certified for outdoor use in wet spaces. It connects to your Wi-Fi network and allows you to remotely control each of the two outlets independently.

Design and features

The power strip has two independently controlled outlets.

They are conveniently labeled with a “1” and “2” on the face of the strip.

The round black button is the master power on/off button and the Wi-Fi setup button. The small circle above that is the LED indicator.

Inside, we see two LEDs, one green and one blue. Green only indicates power on to the unit. Blue/green indicates that one or both of the outlets are energized.

At the top of the back is a hanger for mounting the stip to the wall.

I can’t tell you what the QR code is as my phone wouldn’t scan it successfully.

Setup

Setup involves plugging the strip in, downloading the Smart Life app, setting up a Smart Life account and then adding the device to the app.

After holding down the power button to put the strip into the Wi-Fi pairing mode, I tried searching for a device without success. I finally switched to manual mode and chose “Power Strip” from the large list of supported devices. Once I chose my Wi-Fi network and provided credentials, it successfully attached to my Wi-Fi network.

After adding the strip to the app, it showed up and can be controlled and configured. The two outlets have default names of “Switch” and “Switch 2”.

I clicked on the power button on the screen for switch 2 and it energized the outlet and turned the icon teal in the app.

The app also has an All-On and All-Off button at the bottom of the screen if you want to flip both outlets at the same time.

Performance

The real power with this strip and the Smart Life app is automating lighting tasks.

The app allows for scene creation. For this device, you are limited to eight possible scenes:

All on
All off
#1 on, #2 off
#1 off, #2 on
#1 on, #2 unchanged
#1 off, #2 unchanged
#1 unchanged, #2 on
#1 unchanged, #2 off

Scenes show up in the Smart screen and can become part of automation routines and can also be executed manually.

Automation is pretty powerful in this app.

You can set one or more conditions to be met and then carry our automated actions. You can also provide time windows for those automations to happen,

The list of conditions is pretty comprehensive and can even tie in local weather.

Finally, the Smart Life app supports a bunch of automation tools like Google Home, Alexa, and IFTTT.

Before I connected in the Smart Life skill to Alexa, I renamed the two outlets.

As you can see, after many hours of thought, I cleverly named them, “Plug 1” and “Plug 2”. OK, OK, I know they are actually outlets or sockets, and plugs go into sockets, but “Plug 1” is just easier to say.

After adding the skill to Alexa, I could say things like:

Alexa, turn on Plug 1
Alexa, turn on dual plug (turns on both )
Alexa, turn off Plug 2

What I like

Final thoughts

This is a great little power strip. Being to independently control each outlet brings flexibility to your outdoor power needs. With comprehensive scheduling and home automation integration options, the iClever Wi-Fi smart outdoor outlet deserves a place in your outdoor power arsenal.
