Holtz Leather Co. says it has the perfect groomsmen’s gift

NEWS – Holtz Leather Co. is a family-owned business that produces handcrafted wood and leather goods.  The Tennessee Whiskey Barrel .30 Caliber Bolt Action Pen and Pen Sleeve is a perfect example of their products.  They purchase complete whiskey barrels from Lynchburg, Tennessee hand-turn the wood into pens or other useful goods.  These white oak barrels have housed distilled whiskey for 5-7 years, and the wood retains some of the fragrance of those spirits.

This pen has a “shotgun” for a pen clip.  Instead of clicking on the top, you open the pen using a bolt-action mechanism similar to those found on some firearms.  Finally, the top of the pen looks similar to the end of a shotgun shell.  To finish the pen set, Holtz handcrafts a leather sleeve for the pen.  You can add three initials to the sleeve for a perfect, personalized gift set.  It’s not just for groomsmen, though.

The Tennessee Whiskey Barrel .30 Caliber Bolt Action Pen and Pen Sleeve is $59.00, direct from the Holtz Leather Co.

Learn calligraphy or take your lettering to a new level with the Ensō Parallel Pen set from Pilot

NEWS – If you’ve ever wanted to learn calligraphy, the Ensō Parallel Pen Set from Pilot can help you on your way.  Pilot says these pens are a major breakthrough in calligraphic pen design:  “The nib consists of two parallel plates and allows for sharp, monoline writing with the narrow edge, and expressive, calligraphic writing with the broad edge.”  Ensō Parallel nibs also allow you to easily draw color-blended letters by simply touching the nib of a pen filled with one color to the nib of a pen filled with another color.

The Parallel Pen set consists of four pens with 1.5 mm, 2.4 mm, 3.8 mm, and 6.0 mm nibs; 18 refill ink cartridges (12 assorted colors and 6 black); a pipette; a nib cleaner; and an instruction book to get you started.  Check out Pilot’s product page to see examples of hand lettering done by some of their customers.

The Ensō Parallel Pen Set is $47.08 at Pilot.  The same kit is available at Amazon for only $28.49.

Online Switch Plus Fountain Pen review

REVIEW – I’ve seen many ballpoint pens with a built-in stylus, but the Online Switch Plus Fountain Pen from JetPens just might be the first fountain pen I’ve seen that has a built-in stylus. It’s like old world tech meets the tech of today with this pen. Let’s take a look.

What is it?

The Online Switch Plus Fountain Pen is a lightweight plastic bodied fountain pen that is available in 5 colors and with nibs sizes from extra fine to medium. I was sent the Petrol Blue fountain pen with a fine nib and a blue ink cartridge.

Pen specs

Converter Included: No
Eyedropper Convertible: No
Filling Mechanism: Cartridge – Standard International Short, Converter
Diameter – Grip: 10.4 mm
Diameter – Max: 14.9 mm
Length – Capped: 15.0 cm / 5.9 inches
Length – Posted: 16.7 cm / 6.6 inches
Length – Uncapped: 13.9 cm / 5.5 inches
Weight – Whole Pen (Empty): 0.67 oz / 19 grams

Design and features

The Online Switch pen has a modern look with the two-color body and snap-on cap with a chrome pocket clip. The main barrel of the pen has a soft rubber coated area for fountain pen use and two small knurled grippy areas when the pen is flipped over for stylus use.

There’s a window in the barrel so you’ll know when it’s time to replace the ink cartridge. I don’t know how effective that window really is though as I can’t see anything through the window and without a matching opening on the opposite side of the barrel, there’s no light to help you see through the ink cartridge to see the ink level.

I’m not a fountain pen expert but the nib of the Online Switch looks like a typical fountain pen nib to me. The nib is made of steel that has been painted a glossy black and has a split ink channel.

On the underside of the nib is the black plastic feeder channel. Note that the nib on the Online Switch fountain pen is a non-replaceable part.

On the opposite side of the pen’s barrel, you’ll find a capacitive stylus tip. The stylus tip is a wide rubber style tip that doesn’t lend itself well to precision writing or drawing, but it’s just fine for scrolling through pages, tapping onscreen buttons, and icons.

The Online Switch fountain pen uses ink cartridges like the one that you see in the image above. That’s the blue ink cartridge that comes pre-installed. Jetpens sells a large variety of replacement ink cartridges in many colors.

I mentioned earlier that I’m not a fountain pen expert. So I can only compare the feel to writing with this fountain pen to my favorite style regular pens that use the Pilot G2 refill. That said, the Online Switch fountain pen writing tip felt scratchy on all paper that I tried with it.

I think the main problem that I have with fountain pens is the fact that I’m left handed and find it hard to hold the pen so that the nib is at the optimal angle to the paper. There’s also the fact that when you write with your left hand, you push the pen’s tip across the paper instead of pulling it across the paper. When I tried using this pen in my right hand, the nib to paper feel was smoother. But still not as smooth as using a ballpoint pen.

What I like

  • Inexpensive
  • Built-in stylus

What needs to be improved

  • Nib can’t be replaced

Final thoughts

The Online Switch fountain pen is a nice looking fountain pen that has the extra feature of a built-in stylus tip at an affordable price. I have a feeling that this pen isn’t one that a fountain pen afficianado would choose, but for someone just starting out with fountain pens and who also likes to use a stylus with their mobile devices, the Online Switch is a fountain pen to consider.

Uni Jetstream Stylus Ballpoint Pen review

REVIEW – What features do you look for when shopping for an inexpensive everyday pen? A capless design? Lightweight body? Slim barrel? Built-in stylus? If you answered yes, yes, yes, and yes to those questions, then the Uni Jetstream Stylus from JetPens ticks all those boxes and is priced at a reasonable $5.25. Let’s take a closer look.

What is it?

The Uni Jetstream Stylus Ballpoint Pen is just what you would think it is. It’s a ballpoint pen with a built-in stylus. It’s available in 4 colors including the bright blue version that was sent to me.

Design and features

The Uni Jetstream Stylus Ballpoint Pen has a sleek look, with a slim plastic resin barrel which looks like brushed aluminum, but without the weight. A black tip, top, and clip give it a snazzy look.

The writing tip is extended by sliding down the pocket clip which snaps in place and when it does, a retract button pops out of the opposite side. Pressing that button immediately retracts the tip with a satisfying click.

When the writing tip is extended, you can see through the Jetstream’s barrel.

On the top of the pen is what might look like an eraser, but it’s really a capacitive stylus tip. It’s an Ag Fiber capacitive stylus tip to be exact. This stylus tip has silver coated fibers that make is soft and fuzzy. I wouldn’t recommend it as a drawing or writing stylus just because it’s a bit wide and can obscure your view while writing and drawing. But for scrolling through lists, and web pages and selecting icons on your tablet or phone, it works great and better than a typical rubber tipped stylus.

Both the ink and stylus tips are refillable/replaceable. The ink refills are $1.95 each and the stylus refills come in a pack of 2 for $5.25.

What I like

  • Lightweight and slim
  • Inexpensive
  • Ink can be refilled
  • Stylus tip can be replaced

What needs to be improved

  • Stylus tip doesn’t have a protective cap

Final thoughts

Although the Uni Jetstream Stylus Ballpoint Pen 0.7mm pen writes smoothly and puts down a nice line of black ink, it won’t exactly blow your mind. That’s fine though. After all, it’s a $5.25 pen, it’s not expected to change your life. But if you’re looking for a nice slim everyday pen with a built-in stylus tip that is a lot nicer than a generic rubber tipped stylus, this pen will do the job and look pretty snazzy while doing it.

Carry a few pens in this attachable pen case

NEWS – Most pen cases that fit over a notebook seem to hold only one pen.  That’s fine for some, but other folks may like to color-code entries and need a couple ink colors at hand.  Instead of needing to buy multiple pen holders to carry those pens, get the Smiley Attachable Pen Case and keep everything in one case.

The Smiley case is made of synthetic leather.  It’s attached to an elastic band that fits over a notebook or journal cover; it’s for use with hardcovers only.  The height of the notebook should be between 7.75 – 10.25 inches for best fit.  The case itself measures 1.5″ x 7.6″ x 0.33″ and weighs 0.8 ounce.  It fits 3-4 pencils or pens.  It is not designed for long writing implements; your pens should be no longer than 5.9″, so it unfortunately won’t work with the Apple Pencil.

The Smiley Attachable Pen Case is available in the eight colors shown above.  It is $11.01 at MochiThings.
