Get buff with the Tonal Smart Home Gym

NEWS – What would you get if you put a Bowflex weight machine, a flat panel tv and a bunch of machine learning algorithms into a blender? Well, probably a huge mess, if you could even find a blender large enough. The other, much less probable thing you’d get is the Tonal Smart Home Gym.

At its heart, Tonal is a compact home exercise machine that mounts on your wall and provides you with the ability to do any number of weight-lifting exercises. Two arms fold out from the flat panel and are positionable based on the exercise that you want to perform. The weight resistance is provided by electromagnets capable of simulating up to 200 pounds of resistance.

Similar to Peleton and other connected exercise machines, Tonal also offers a subscription-based training package. This monthly service connects you to several coaches (8 are available as of this writing), each with their own specialty area, and an assortment of exercise videos. If, after a mandatory 12-month subscription, you choose not to renew, you can still use the machine to train yourself.

Users can also purchase an accessory package to enhance their workout. In addition to a bench and foam roller, the package includes a set of smart handles and bar. These allow you to turn the resistance, or weight, off and on, making it easier to get into position for a particular exercise. The handles include a 6-axis gyroscope that allows Tonal to track your movement in three dimensions.

The Tonal Smart Home Gym is available from Tonal for $2,995. The training program is an additional monthly $49.00 fee with a twelve-month commitment. You can finance the Tonal for $199 a month. This price includes a two-year training subscription.

Wake up to a puking pup with Odd Alarm

NEWS – Anyone that ever has had a pet knows that nothing wakes you up faster than the sound of your pet about to do the technicolor yawn all over your cream colored carpet.  If you’re a deep sleeper and need that kind of rise-and-shine motivation, Odd Alarm may be for you.

Odd Alarm has a series of non-traditional, yet extremely effective alarm sounds like pet vomiting, pet licking, slamming doors, gunfire, and breaking glass designed to rouse you from dreamland into a quick entry to the wide-awake world.

If you’re really hard to motivate, the app includes difficult methods to silence the alarm, like solving math problems (although that option doesn’t appear in the Android version). You do have to chase a moving sun icon to silence the alarm.

Setup is straightforward:

  • Swipe Up to create a new alarm
  • Swipe down to save a new alarm
  • Select an alarm
  • Choose the snooze duration
  • Set alarm volume
  • Chase a moving sun to turn off the alarm

The app is free and comes with three alarms, cat fight, dog barf and, glass breaking. Other sounds are offered as individual options for sale in the app for $0.99 each.

If you’re the type of person that needs a bucket of cold water dumped on your head to get you up in the morning, this app might help keep your bedding dry and get you to work on time.

To read more and watch a video about the app. visit OddAlarmApp. Download the Android app from the Play Store and IOS version from iTunes.

CUBEPACKS | Packing Cubes That Transform Into Packs – Notable crowdfunding campaign

CROWDFUNDING NEWS – Packing cubes are some of my most vital travel gear—they allow me to pack a lot more than without them.  But sometimes I think it would be nice to have a smaller day pack to use once I get to my destination, rather than hauling me travel backpack around.  Cubepacks bridge that gap.  Let’s take a look!

What is it?

Cubepacks are compression packing cubes that transform into packs once you arrive at your destination.

Why do I like it?

I’m a huge fan of multi-purpose gear, especially for travel.  Cubepacks compression packing cubes help you pack more clothing or other gear into a smaller space while you are traveling to your destination.  But once you arrive, they don’t have to just sit in your travel bag—they can transform into packs that you can use as day packs.  They are available in three sizes: Backpack, Should Pack, and Hip Pack, each feature YKK zippers with dual pulls, a carry handle, concealable shoulder straps, and exterior organizational pockets.

Where do I find more info?

The CUBEPACKS | Packing Cubes that Transform into Packs campaign ends April 23, 2019 and has already surpassed its funding goal of $10,000. Pledge packages start at $29 for a single Size Small Cubepack and increase from there depending on the options selected.  After the end of the campaign period, rewards are expected to start shipping in September 2019. Visit the CUBEPACKS | Packing Cubes that Transform into Packs campaign site for more information or to become a backer.

Apple Airpad cancelled, Nomad offers alternative

NEWS – Apple has just announced that they are putting the final nail in the AirPad coffin. (Photo credit for above shot goes to The Verge.) Matthew Panzarino at TechCrunch has the dirty details: “After a delay of over a year since it was first announced in September of 2017, the AirPower charging mat has become something of a focal point for Apple’s recent habit of announcing envelope tickling products and not actually shipping them on time.” Sometimes, Physics wins over engineering hubris. So it goes.

So, what shall we do, if we want a single device that can handle the terrific trio of charging (iPhone, Apple Watch, and wireless AirPods)? Our friends at Nomad have an answer. Their Nomad Base Station Apple Watch Edition has three Qi-certified charging coils across the charging pad. (The photo below is a promo shot from Nomad’s product listing.) The pad itself can charge two iPhones or an iPhone and AirPods in a wireless Charging Case at the same time thanks to 7.5 watts of power across those coils, according to an iMore review.

Did you, like me, rush to buy the wireless AirPods, thinking that the AirPad was just over the horizon? Are you going to use a different wireless solution, or take advantage of Apple’s 14 day return policy and fall back to a wired charging pair and spend the extra $50 on a nice steak dinner? Let’s discuss the Nomad solution and any others in the comments. Maybe we can get some of these solutions into the hands of willing Gadgeteers to test and review.

KeySmart Urban Wallets cover a variety of EDC and travel needs

NEWS – Wallets are an essential piece of EDC gear for most of us, and I’ve been on a continuous quest to find the “perfect” wallet (for me).  We’re fans of KeySmart here at The Gadgeteeer, but only recently did I stumble upon KeySmart’s line of Urban Wallets, which look cool and appear to have some thoughtful features included.  More info below!

Keysmart’s current product offering consists of the Slim Wallet, the Bi-Fold Wallet, and the Passport Wallet.  Each is made from KeySmart’s lightweight and flexible Techtuff Leather (which lasts 10x longer than traditional leather), include anti-theft 360-degree RFID blocking, have external style ridges to help guide them into your pocket, Tile Slim pockets to help you track them if lost (Tile Slim not included), and are available in either Black or Slate colors.

The Slim Wallet ($39.99) is for those who prefer the most minimalist wallet carry and works well for either front- or rear-pocket carry.  It fits up to 9 cards, includes an easy slide thumb slot for quick access to your most-used card.

The Bi-Fold Wallet ($49.99) holds up to 9 cards in 5 slots, and includes both an easy-slide thumb slot as well as a Card Pull Tab for easy access to a few cards. It also has a full-sized bill pocket.

The Passport Wallet ($79.99) holds up to 6 cards that fit into die-cut card slots, and also includes a Quick-Flip Passport Pocket for easy access through security, as well as a slot for boarding passes, and a full-sized bill slot.  It also includes a small pen and SIM card tool.

All of these wallets look very cool and well-built.  Visit getKeySmart.com for more info or to order.
