The S.H.O.V.E.L is an open-sourced spork

It looks like a spoon combined with a fork and otherwise known as a spork, but it’s really the Semi-Horned Oblong Versatile Eating Ladle, or as SparkFun calls it, the S.H.O.V.E.L.

This handy eating utensil is made of titanium and features a spoon with fork tines, a serrated knife, a bottle cap opener, and six feet of red paracord wrapped around the handle.

You can buy one for $9.95 from SparkFun, but you can also download the CAD files and improve on the design because this is an open-source product. Head over to SparkFun to order or download the files.

Harness the power of the sun to charge your gear while you drive, fly, or just sit around at home

The Port Solar Charger from XD Design is designed to stick to a window and use the sun’s rays to power your gadgets.

This solar charger has a built-in battery that can be charged with a USB cable which will take about 2 hours or by sunlight which can take up to 20 hours. Yeah, you can’t be in a hurry 🙂

The Port Solar Charger’s built-in battery has a capacity of 1000mAh, so it won’t fully charge your phone. But it’s better than nothing and it’s free power.

I am not sure how well a solar charger like this works, as it depends on how much sunlight is hitting the window it’s attached to. But it would be a cool way to power your devices for free if you frequently travel by train, plane, or automobile, or if you have a nice big window that gets a lot of sunlight.

The price of the Port Solar Charger, on the other hand, isn’t free. It is priced at $49.99. For more info head over to www.xd-design.com and you can buy one from Amazon.

Crank up the perfect weenie roast

My mouth is watering just thinking about a perfectly roasted hotdog in a soft bun with just the right amount of ketchup but no mustard because mustard is disgusting 😉 I can’t remember the last time I had a hotdog cooked on an outdoor grill, let alone over a campfire. If I had a fire pit, I would seriously consider buying a Crank-Eez from Firebuggz.

The Crank-Eez is a specially designed hotdog skewer that has a 36-inch long food grade stainless steel rod and a fun wooden handle that you can crank to turn the hotdog over the fire for just the right level of burnt goodness.

The fork at the end of the Crank-Eez secures the wiener so it won’t fall into the fire. And if you’re not a fan of hotdogs, you can roast two marshmallows at a time.

You can read more about the Crank-Eez at firebuggz.com and you can order one for $19.39 from Amazon.

Turn your Apple TV remote into something you’ll actually want to use with Elago’s R1 Intelli Case

The new and improved 4K Apple TV comes out this Friday, September 22 but one thing that’s not new and improved is the included Siri Remote. It’s the same remote they used for the 4th gen model and it’s just not very good. It’s small, hard to hold onto and usually ends up lost in the black hole otherwise known as your couch cushions. Elago solves these issues and more with their R1 Intelli Case for the Apple TV remote.

The intelli Case is similar to a phone case but for your Apple TV remote. It’s made of a durable silicone which is soft to the touch and adds great grip for added security and comfort. The case covers all four corners of the remote for added drop protection. It also gives the flat Apple TV remote a more ergonomic feel, making it more comfortable to hold.

Even though the case covers and protects the remote it still allows access to all of its functions. Open cutouts for the dual microphones, glass touch surface, buttons, and port for charging/remote loop are open for direct access.

Not only will the case protect your remote but it also has powerful magnets inside that allow you to attach the remote to any metal surface including some televisions. I’m not sure I would use this feature myself, but it’s kinda cool. Heck, you could even attach it to your refrigerator at least you’d always know where it is.

There’s also a strap that you can attach to the case for extra security, especially if you use the remote for playing games on your Apple TV. The strap is made of a soft fabric material and can be adjusted up to 240mm in length.

The Elago Intelli Case comes in 6 different colors. Black, Red, Clear White, Jean Indigo (blue), Nightglow Blue and Solid White.

For more info visit the Elago website or purchase on Amazon from $7.99 – $11.99.
