The Canon EOS M50 – finally a camera that may fill a critical void in their lineup!

Whenever I go on a photography shoot, I always feel uneasy only having one camera with me. While it makes a lot of sense to have a backup camera, it is also very important to have a camera that is lighter, smaller, very capable in features, and otherwise not lagging very far behind my larger professional series DSLR. As a Canon fan, I have looked at their line of cameras to find one that would closely meet my requirements, but so far, they have fallen short in several ways.

This past week, Canon announced the EOS M50 Mirrorless Digital Camera and I immediately got excited. The M50 prominently features a new Raw format, a new DIGIC 8 processor which is a first for Canon, an OLED electronic viewfinder, a shooting rate of 10 fps and yes!!, 4K video.

Canon has chosen to use a 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor and they have included the options for Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth. They also feature Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus and 5-axis image stabilization, but it seems that the Dual Pixel Autofocus is not available when shooting 4K video. (I will confirm this when I get one in my hands!). The inclusion of their eTTL flash system makes it easy to swap my flash from my professional EOS DSLR and the M50, and just keep going.

This combination of features makes this camera very appealing as a “go to” backup camera, especially since it weighs less that one pound with the battery and memory card installed.

The M50 is expected to be released in March 2018, and can be pre-ordered as a body only, or with a couple of options for kit lens.

You can head over to B&H Photo Video and pre-order at a starting price of $779.00.

This 3-in-1 charging stand from Elago holds and charges all your Apple devices in one compact space.  The stand is made of silicone for durability; it won’t scratch your expensive devices, either.  You’ll use the charging cables supplied with the Apple devices with the charging stand.

The 3-in-1 stand is compatible with all iPhones from the 5 through the new iPhone X and all three series of the Apple Watch.  It holds the watch horizontally, so you can use the Watch’s nightstand mode.  The Elago stand is available in black, classic white, jean indigo (shown), and dark gray for $24.99.  The Elago 3-in-1 Charging Hub can be purchased at Amazon.

This tiny USB Type-C to HDMI adapter is perfect for travel

I have a USB Type-C to HDMI adapter that I use to connect my 12-inch MacBook to an LG 29″ monitor on my desk. The size of that adapter doesn’t matter to me because it never leaves the desk. But if I carried a USB Type-C to HDMI adapter with me in my gear bag every day, I would prefer to have the smallest adapter available. Nonda offers just such an adapter.

The Nonda USB-C to HDMI Adapter is very small and features 4K with resolutions up to 4096 x 2160 @60Hz in a fold-up form factor that you’ll have no trouble finding space to store it in your bag or pocket.

The wrap around braided cable helps keep the adapter small and compact, and the $22.99 price tag won’t empty your wallet.

Read more about the Nonda adapter at nonda.co or head over to Amazon to order one.

Peak Design’s Everyday Sling 5L bag makes downsizing fun

At least I hope the Peak Design Everyday Sling 5L will make downsizing fun because they sent me one to try and I’m going to put it to the test next week by leaving my full-sized Timbuk2 messenger at home while I use the 5L in its place. This is PD’s smallest bag which has been designed to carry camera gear, small drones, up to an 11″ tablet, and your EDC.

The Everyday Sling 5L features Peak Design’s FlexFold dividers which allow you to customize the interior of the bag and reconfigure it as needed. The strap offers multiple carry styles from crossbody to even waist carry.

Peak Design’s well-made functional bags aren’t new to me. I’ve reviewed their Everyday Messenger Bag and their Everyday Tote bag. But the Sling 5L is significantly smaller, so switching to it for even one day may be a challenge. But it’s a challenge that I’m happy to accept as it will make me examine what I really need and what I think I need to carry with me each day. Stay tuned for my review coming soon!

Ditch plastic wrap and use this glass spatter guard in your microwave

If you’re anything like me, your microwave is used daily to reheat leftovers. And the interior of your microwave might look like you nuked a small animal if you don’t regularly cover your plates while you’re reheating your food. Or maybe your microwave is clean, but you use plastic storage containers with plastic lids when you reheat your food. If you do either of these things, you should take a look at Cuchina Safe covers.

Cuchina Safe covers are made of borosilicate glass that can handle temperatures as high as 450 degrees. That means that you can use these covers in your microwave and oven without fear that they will melt like plastics can do.

Glass is much safer for you to use when reheating food in the microwave. I’m paranoid to use plastic containers and plastic wrap in the microwave after having an adventure with breast cancer back in 2011. I prefer to reheat food in ceramic or glass dishes and usually place a ceramic plate face down over the dish. This works fine with bowls, but you cant do that with a plate of food like you can with the Cuchina Safe cover.

The covers come in two styles.

There’s the microwave cover that has a scalloped edge that acts as a steam release when face down over a plate. When you flip it over, it doubles as a baking dish.

And then there’s the Cuchina Safe vented flat lid that can be placed over a bowl to protect your microwave from splatters or pots on the stove.

Cuchina Safe lids are priced at $26.95 for one microwave cover & baking dish and the same price for 2 of the vented lids. You can read more about these products by visiting cuchinasafe.com and you can order them from The Grommet and also check prices on Amazon.
