Use your laptop anywhere with the Foldable Laptop Stand by Levit8

NEWS – How many times have you found yourself in a place where you need to or want to use your laptop, but there is either no place to sit and use it at a comfortable height or no place clean and comfortable to use it while standing? I have faced this scenario more than once, and I have frequently looked for a portable stand that has the height and weight requirements that will also allow me to carry it without an issue.

I recently came across the Foldable Laptop Stand by Levit8. This foldable laptop stand seems like it would work in a variety of scenarios. It is an origami style design that is lightweight and claims to be able to support 20 times its weight. It is constructed from polyester, PU fabric, and high-density cardboard, and is stain and water-resistant. It comes in the following 4 sizes: Small: 9″ x 9″ x 9″ (1.3lbs); Medium 9″ x 9″ x 11.9″ (1.65lbs); Large: 9″ x 9″ x 14″ (1.85lbs); X-Large: 9″ x 9″ x 16.2″ (2lbs). Since the largest size weighs only 2lbs, it would likely be an easy addition to my EDC backpack.

If you are interested in purchasing the Foldable Laptop Stand by Levit8, you can head over to Amazon and pick one up. They range in price from $23.95 to $34.95 depending on the size you choose.

Blackwing Pencils – the Cadillac of writing implements?

NEWS – If you still like taking notes and writing journal entries the old way with paper and a pencil or pen, you need to check out Blackwing Pencils.  These pencils were first introduced by the Eberhard Faber Pencil Company in the 1930s.  They immediately found a loyal following, including novelist John Steinbeck and Chuck Jones, who used Blackwings to create Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes characters.  Eventually, Blackwings were discontinued in the 1990s, but a devoted cult following would pay as much as $40 per pencil to buy up leftover stock.  In 2010, the Blackwing company started production again.

Blackwing says their pencils combine the best wood and best graphite.  The body is made of incense-cedar wood from California and Oregon that sharpens evenly and easily.  They are filled with premium Japanese graphite that’s crafted with clay for strength and wax for smoothness.  All of them have an eraser that’s unlike any I’ve seen on another pencil; they remove from the holder so you can use every bit of the eraser, and you can purchase replacements for $2.95 for a pack of 10.

There are three models of these pencils.  The Blackwing has a matte black finish and a black eraser.  It has soft graphite that’s perfect for scoring or illustrating.  The Blackwing Pearl has a pearl white finish and a white eraser.  It has a balanced graphite for lettering and line work.  The Blackwing 602 has a gunmetal gray finish and pink eraser.  Its firm graphite is great for writing and everyday use.  Each type is $21.95 for a set of 12 pencils.  They can be purchased at Blackwing.

This iPhone selfie case is made of recycled fishing nets and scrap aluminum

NEWS – The POPSICASE makes taking selfies with your iPhone just a little easier because the case features an aluminum handle that slides out from the back of the case. But that’s not the only thing that is cool about the POPSICASE. It’s also made from 100% recycled fishing nets and scrap aluminum. Why fishing nets you might be asking? Because according to POPSICASE, every year 1.28 billion pounds of fishing nets are discarded in our oceans, killing more than 365,000 whales, seals, turtles, and birds. Fishermen in 17 ports along the Mediterranean are doing their part to fix this problem by discarding their old nets into special recycle bins.

The Barcelona based POPSICASE company takes these old nets and converts them into plastic pellets that are then used to create POPSICASEs for iPhone 6, 6S, 7, 8, X as well as the larger sized iPhone Plus 6, 6S, 7 and 8.

These eco-friendly iPhone cases come in a variety of colors and are priced at 29.00€ which is about $34 US. You can read more about them and order one by visiting POPISCASE.com

Go figure – ClassPad.net is a web based graphing calculator.

NEWS – Back in 2003, Casio released a stylus-based graphing calculator that featured a computer algebra system. It was a hybrid of the typical number pad calculator of the time and a PDA. The most recent version, the Casio fx-CG500, was introduced in 2017.  Casio has also made a web version on the website Classpad.net. This website is in beta-testing and includes a calculator, analytical geometry, graphing calculator, statistical operations, and commentary. The user interface is composed of boxes that contain calculations to be performed, statements to be graphed, geometries to be studied or values to be statistically analyzed. Related boxes are connected by spline curves as is typical of visual programming.

The greatest benefit of the software is its cross-platform capability and the ability for teachers and students to share problems and solutions with each other. The software still has some problems to work out as evidenced by the screenshot below. While “i” is on the entry keyboard, neither sqrt(-1) = i nor i^2=-1 is calculated. Also solve(7*x^5-3*x^4+2*x^2-25,x) only yields the one real root 1.34925, and doesn’t provide the 4 other imaginary ones. Also, adding or subtracting very large numbers does not provide the correct result, even when using the computer algebra system. The limit to the right on the screen shot below approaches zero as x becomes infinite.

One thing that I found perplexing is that there is no way to save the screen to pdf from within the program and no way to copy the algebraic forms from the paper. At least the statistical tables allow cut and paste from and to Excel, but not the statistical result.

While in beta the use of all of the site features is free, although at the end of beta handwriting recognition and the computer algebra system functionality may need to be purchased.

If you’re searching for a powerful cross-platform calculator or looking for a tool to teach math in a computer-rich academic environment, then the Casio ClassPad may be what you’re looking for. For more information visit ClassPad.net
