Why press buttons when Alexa will perfectly nuke your next Hot Pocket

NEWS – Here’s just one more indication that we’re getting closer to the day when we can just ask a replicator to make us a sandwich. Case in point – GE’s new smart, scan-to-cook microwave which works with your phone or your voice to heat up your food without pressing a button. You can use your phone to snap a photo of the barcode on your pre-packaged food, and the microwave will set the right time with the right power setting for you. This feature currently works with 3,000 meals and food items with more items being added as time goes by.

If using your phone to control your microwave takes too much effort, the new .9 cubic foot GE microwave also works with Amazon Alexa, so you can say… “Alexa, start the microwave”, “Alexa, add 30 more seconds to the microwave” and more. With voice control, you can easily start defrosting the frozen rump roast without having to touch any buttons on the microwave, or add an extra 30 seconds to heat up the coffee you forgot about.

The GE .9 Cu. Ft. Capacity Countertop Microwave Oven is currently priced at $154.98 (that price includes an Echo Dot) on Amazon.

TicWatch Pro is a smartwatch with 30 day battery life

NEWS – Powered by Google’s Wear OS, the TicWatch smartwatch is a premium quality watch that does something that other smartwatches can’t do. It can run for up 5 to 30 days on a single charge. Five days is considerably longer than the majority of smartwatches that are currently on the market. So how are they able to do that? The TicWatch Pro uses a special layered display:

enabling the user to switch between an FSTN (Film compensated Super Twisted Nematic) LCD display and an OLED display that sit on top of one another. The FSTN display (top layer) is a transparent LCD display chosen due to its low power consumption, high visibility in direct sunlight, and transparent quality when not turned on. This is important in order to ensure the OLED (bottom layer) display’s brightness and colors aren’t compromised when in use.

The TicWatch Pro has different two modes that switch between the two displays. In “Smart Mode”, the OLED display is active along with Wear OS by Google, and battery life is up to two full days of usage. In “Essential Mode”, only the FSTN display is in use to show the time, date, step counting, and heart rate monitoring. In this mode, battery life can last up to 30 days. When Smart Mode reaches low battery, the Essential Mode can be automatically activated so the watch can last for another three days before it needs to be recharged.

We’ll have a review soon, but you can read more about the TicWatch Pro and buy one now for $249.99 from Amazon.

BOSS Katana-Air claims to be the first truly wireless portable guitar amp

NEWS – I don’t know if it’s truly the first, but the BOSS Katana-Air 30W Stereo Combo Amplifier comes with a proprietary wireless transmitter to connect to your guitar to the amp.  The Katana-Air is a true stereo amplifier with two custom-tuned speakers.  You’re ready to play anywhere with this BOSS.  It provides 30W of audio power when plugged into a power outlet or 20W when running off battery.  The amp uses “low-latency digital-wireless guitar technology developed by BOSS to provide transparent sound without any lag or dropouts.”

The guitar transmitter provides up to 12 hours of playing time.  It recharges with a dock on the amp itself.  It maximizes playing time by entering standby mode for both the transmitter and amp when you aren’t playing.  When you pick up the guitar, the transmitter senses motion and turns on the amp.  The Katana-Air also has a headphone jack for silent practicing.

To be sure I don’t miss anything, I’ll let BOSS tell you about their effects and an associated app in their own words:

Equipped with the same tones and sound-shaping controls found in larger Katana amplifiers, the Katana-Air offers timbres for any style. Five amp characters provide a wide range of tones, from sparkling clean to a custom, high-gain Brown sound evocative of a Marshall stack. There’s even an Acoustic character optimized for playing acoustic/electric guitar. The amp also provides integrated access to over 50 BOSS effects, including modulations, delays, and reverb effects optimized for the Katana-Air’s stereo speaker system. With six onboard memories, you can store and recall your favorite amp and effects setups at any time.

Available for both iOS and Android devices, a dedicated BOSS Tone Studio app gives you complete control of the Katana-Air right from your smartphone or tablet. You’re able to adjust all the amp’s panel controls, as well as access effects types and routings solely available from the app. You can also save setups to the amp’s memories, organize sound libraries on your device, and download free patch collections directly from BOSS Tone Central. The app corresponds with the amp over Bluetooth.”

When you aren’t using the BOSS Katana-Air as a practice amp, it’s a Bluetooth speaker for music playback from your computer or mobile devices.

The BOSS Katana-Air 30W Stereo Combo Amplifier with wireless transmitter is $399.99 at B&H.

Shinola gets into your head with the Canfield Pro In-Ear Monitors

NEWS – Okay, I’ll admit it. I have a weakness for in-ear headphones—or as I like to call them, plain ole’ earphones. It started with a pair of Future Sonics Atrio earphones I won in a contest. Not only did those earphones introduce me to the joys of personal audio, they also sparked my entry into reviewing audio gear. Because of that, I am constantly scouting the newest and (hopefully) best earphones and headphones available—which brings me to Shinola. This high-end American made brand from Detroit manufactures all kinds of gear, including audio. Shinola has now introduced the new Canfield Pro In-Ear Monitors.

The Canfield Pro In-Ear Monitors are a new direction for Shinola—a move into the pro arena, catering to music professionals as well as the discerning at-home listener.

Shinola states that while the Canfield Pro In-Ear Monitors were specifically crafted for artists performing live, they think everyone should be able to enjoy unparalleled sound anywhere. That’s why the monitors were designed to have the qualities professional musicians need with the addition of an inline microphone, volume control and a multifunctional button for everyday use.

Each Pro In-Ear monitor is powered by two balanced armature receivers—a bass woofer with a mid-high range tweeter. Shinola’s sound signature focuses on vocals while providing enough bass for support, but to never overwhelm.

The Canfield Pro In-Ear Monitors have interchangeable memory foam and silicone ear tips, for hours of comfortable listening. The detachable monitor cable swivels for additional comfort. Developed in-house with Campfire Audio, every pair is fully designed, tuned, built and tested in the United States.

The Canfield Pro In-Ear Monitors come in both silver or black and sell for $495 direct from Shinola.
