SANSI A21 omni-directional LED light bulb review

REVIEW – When I first started writing for The Gadgeteer, I never in my dreams thought that I would be reviewing light bulbs. And now, I’m reviewing a second one from the same company. But SANSI has good products, and their new A21 LED is lighting my office as I type this. 5000ºK is daylight-bright. I’m finding all sorts of things in here that I’d thought I lost.

What is it?

An omnidirectional light bulb that screws into standard light-bulb sockets and shows your world in a whole different kind of light.

Design and features

When I was assigned the SANSI A21 LED bulb for review, I thought “OK, another LED replacement bulb. No big deal.” When I put this into the regular table lamp in my office and switched it on, however, I was floored. This office has never been this bright. But it’s not a harsh, other-worldly brightness. It just looks like we removed the ceiling and the sun is shining in and lighting everything up, but there are no noon-day shadows. It’s really hard to put into words what it’s like to suddenly have a skylight in a room with no construction.

It’s a light bulb. But it delivers a totally different color and intensity of light than traditional light bulbs, and uses less energy, to boot!

What I like

  • Full-range natural light
  • No warm-up or delay – flip it on, and the sun’s out.
  • Not harsh or overpowering

What needs to be improved

  • You have to start keeping up with the time because it can be full sunlight at 3 AM with this thing!

Final thoughts

$25 per bulb sounds like a lot of money, but this light is so natural and relaxing, you find yourself being more relaxed and calm. I can’t wait for winter now – SAD will not get to me!

Price: $49.99 for a 2-pack

Now your cooler can have an interior light, just like your home fridge

NEWS – Well, it’s not just like the home fridge, because it’s not activated by opening the door.  The StarBright Cooler Light has LED bulbs and a rechargeable battery.  You turn it on and toss it into your Yeti, Coleman, RTIC, or other coolers of any size.  It’s not mounted to your cooler.  It lays on top of or under the ice in the cooler.  It waterproof, even in up to 6 feet of water.

The StarBright light uses long-life red and white LEDs that are rated for over 36,000 hours of use.  The red lights will protect your night vision, for when you are fishing or star-watching.  It can provide up to 60 hours of white light or up to 31 hours of red light.  The battery recharges with any USB power source in about 5 hours, and an LED gauge shows how much battery life is left.

The StarBright Cooler Light is $22.92 at Amazon.

Control your Philips Hue lights by simply entering a room

NEWS – Most of the bulbs in my house are Philips Hue bulbs or light strips.  I have a lot of Hue Tap switches scattered around to operate my lights, and they work well, but a couple of them require you to walk down a dark hallway to reach the switch.  I need to add a Hue Motion sensor at each end of the hall to automatically trigger the lights so I’m not wandering around in the dark.

The Motion sensor is battery-powered, so it can be installed anywhere.  You can set it on a table or shelf, mount it to the wall or ceiling with a screw, or attach it to an appliance or other metal surface with the included magnet.  Once mounted, you can adjust its viewing angle.  When it detects motion, the sensor can trigger your selected Hue scene or light setting to turn the lights on.  Lights will go off after it no longer senses motion.  The sensor also has a daylight detector, so it can adjust the light for a dim nightlight when the room is dark or for bright white light during the daytime.  Of course, the Hue Motion sensor requires a connection to the Hue bridge to operate your Hue lights.

The Hue Motion sensor is $39.99 at the Philips Hue website.

These lightbulbs are works of art

NEWS – Normally, I wouldn’t write about these lightbulbs because they have virtually no information with the listing.  However, they are so beautiful, I did it anyway.  The Speed Warp lightbulbs appear to fit normal lamp sockets.  They seem to have internal fibers that make the bulbs look like the special effects used for hyperspace in Star Wars movies.

The Speed Warp bulbs are available in five styles for $19.00 each at GiftTheGalaxy.

Philips announces the new Hue Play light bar for your TV

NEWS – Philips latest smart lighting product is the Play light bar.  You choose from 16 million colors to enhance the atmosphere of your room.  The light bar integrates into your existing Hue lighting and pairs with your Hue bridge.  It can then be controlled by the Hue app or by the variety of 3rd party apps for the Hue lighting system.  It also can be controlled by Hue switches or with Amazon Alexa, Apple Homekit, and Google Home, which allow you to control your lights with your voice.  You can also set timers, notifications, alarms, and sync it to music (using the Hue Sync app), and more, as you can with other Hue lights.

Play can be added to the back of your TV for backlighting using the included clips and double-sided tape.  Add the stand, and Play will stand on a table to serve as an accent light.  Or you can lay it on the floor to wash a wall with color.  It can even be used as under-cabinet lighting for kitchen counters.  Up to three Play light bars can be connected to a single power supply.

Philips Hue Play will be available with a single light bar for $69.95 or with two light bars for $129.95.  A separate light bar will be available to expand the kit to the maximum three bars.  Shipping is expected in October.  Learn more at Philips.
