You’ll float too with the Pennywise Balloon lamp

NEWS – IT Chapter Two, the sequel to the terrifying 2017 horror movie IT is opening in theaters this weekend. To celebrate (or just to be plain creepy) Firebox is selling a Pennywise balloon lamp. The lamp is a near-identical replica to the iconic red balloon seen eerily floating in the films, usually signaling that Pennywise wasn’t far behind.

The lamp is in the shape of a balloon attached to a stand that looks like a piece of string, making the lamp look like it’s floating.

When turned on, it casts an eerie red glow over everything in the room. Who would have ever thought that something as simple as a single red balloon could be so creepy?

The website does post one Warning: “This balloon does not produce a clown-shaped shadow. If you see one, RUN. You are in immediate danger. Vacate the premises immediately. Pennywise appearance imminent.

The Pennywise Balloon Lamp sells on Firebox for $36.99. Strangely enough, “IT” is currently out of stock, but you can still preorder one. There’s no word on whether they were all purchased by a particular Dancing Clown.

Brightech Madison Wireless Charging Table & LED Lamp review

REVIEW – I feel like I’m integrating my house with more technology every time I review a product and today is no different with a review of the Brightech Madison Wireless Charging Table & LED Lamp. Now I have a great looking side table with some great charging capabilities. Lets take a closer look!

What is it?

This is a designer side table with an LED lamp, Qi charging area, standard electrical outlet and USB port.

What’s in the box?

All of the parts and pieces needed to assemble the table, including an LED light bulb.

Design and features

The table has a Qi charging pad on the top shelf, with a green indicator light on the front next to the electrical outlet and USB port. Constructed with light weight components, the table is easy to move but still very sturdy. There is a low and middle shelf for storage and then the upper table top.

Setup

Pretty straight forward, you assemble the table per the instructions and plug it into the wall. Putting it together was extremely easy and the pieces are all labeled by a letter that is easily referenced in the instruction manual.

Performance

The light provided emits a good amount of light and the various methods to charge all work well. It’s very convenient and great to be able to charge without having to plug in. With the additional USB, we are able to charge our iPad via lightning cord as well. The stylish design makes it a nice fit in the room as well. Additionally, it is available in two different colors: classic black and havana brown. Finally, the lamp arm swings from side to side if you need to give yourself more light.

What I like

  • Three different ways to charge
  • Quality design and sturdy construction
  • Very stylish and sleek
  • Excellent price point

What I would change

  • I think I would pay more to have two Qi charging spots on the top, but that’s just a personal preference since we both have iPhones that allow for Qi charging.

Final thoughts

I really like the Madison charging table, it fits great into our theater room providing light, charging and a convenient storage option in our busy room. For anyone looking for a new side table with great features, I’d definitely recommend this table.

Brightech Maxwell Floor Lamp with Wireless Charging Pad review

REVIEW – When our family first started buying mobile devices several years ago, I purchased an Anker USB charging hub and put it on our pie safe.  This created one central location in the house where everyone could put their gadgets for high-speed charging.  These days, however, it seems that we always want to keep our devices handy. We have this compulsion to respond quickly to text messages, check the weather, or play music via a Bluetooth speaker. Whether or not such dependency upon our gadgets is a good thing I’ll leave for you to decide, but it certainly leaves us wanting to have more than one charger in the house and even to have more than one type of charger, as our tablets still require a USB cable but our phones support the Qi wireless charging standard.  I could purchase a handful of charging stations and scatter them around the house, but it would be nice to have a solution that fits more naturally into our living spaces.  This is where Brightech comes in.  As the name of this company suggests, many of their products integrate charging technologies into light fixtures.  This is an elegant way to solve my problem, so I’m hoping that the Brightech Maxwell floor lamp will fit nicely into our living room.

What is it?

The Brightech Maxwell (Wireless Charging Edition) is a floor lamp that has three shelves, one of which has a power outlet, a USB port, and a Qi wireless charger.  It’s designed for the living room, and I think it would probably work best next to a couch or a chair, thus providing easy access to devices being charged.

What’s in the box?

The Maxwell comes with:

  • All the parts necessary to assemble the floor lamp (shelves, poles, sundry hardware, and a light socket with cord)
  • A light bulb
  • A rectangular, off-white lamp shade
  • A manual with 3 pages of assembly instructions, a customer care card, and a giveaway card

You’ll need to have a large Phillips screwdriver and a rubber mallet to assemble the lamp, as these tools are not included.  (A regular hammer will work in a pinch, though it might crack the plastic pieces, if you’re not careful.)

Hardware specs

  • 1 LED lightbulb, 9.5 watts at 800 lumens
  • 1 Qi wireless charger
  • 1 USB port (the website says there are 2 ports, but there’s only 1)
  • 1 US electrical outlet
  • Weight:  13 pounds
  • Height:  63 inches
  • Shelves:  10.25 x 10.25 inches

Design and features

Brightech describes the Maxwell lamp as both Asian and modern.  When we lived in Thailand, we saw a lot of rectangular lamp shades, though often with images.  When a shade like this is combined with the austere style and black color of our lamp then a fusion of Asian and modern is a pretty good summary of its style.

Installation and setup

I hope you’re comfortable with the phrase “some assembly required,” because that’s a requirement for this gadget.  One evening after dinner, my wife and I set out to assemble the floor lamp.  The manual walked us through the process using a combination of pictures and textual instructions.  For the most part, it was well-written.  There were a couple places that were slightly confusing, but as this lamp is reasonably straightforward to assemble, we were able to figure it out without any snafus.

We started with the base and connected the poles with screws.  It uses a set of interesting two-sided screws that connect the poles under each shelf with the corresponding poles over it.  This is a nice solution for keeping everything together nice and tight.

The lamp quickly grew until it was too large to assemble on the table, so we moved it down to the floor. There are three shelves:  the base shelf, the middle shelf, and the charging shelf.  Two power cords are built into the back of the charging shelf; one goes down and plugs into the wall, and the other goes up and connects to the lamp.

The socket is held firmly in place with a wingnut, and a small chain hangs down under it and turns the light on and off.  There also four holes in the board that holds the socket, allowing some light to shine done onto the charging shelf below, a nice touch.

Once we added the final piece to the top, we opened up the lamp shade and slid it down into its spot. The somewhat rigid material feels very similar to a standard lampshade.  Four plastic fasteners keep it from moving around.   The final step was to attach the four plastic clips used to hold the cord against the poles, thus keeping it out of sight.

It took us about 30 minutes to assemble the Maxwell.

Performance

The charging shelf has a Qi wireless charger built into it.  When an Qi-enabled phone is set on the shelf, it begins charging, and it works just as expected.  There’s a small LED between the plug and the USB port that is normally red but turns green when a phone is charging.  I’m not a big fan of the LED; it doesn’t really fit into the soft ambiance of our living room, but it is handy to know at a glance when my phone is being charged.

There is also a USB port for charging other gadgets, and you’ll need to supply your own cable for this. When charging my tablet, I can prop it up using the built-in stand, thus keeping the shelf free for charging a phone. This is a nice little addition to keep things neat.

The included lightbulb is a warm white LED that uses only 9.5w.  It’s bright enough to read by, though not so bright as to blind everyone in the room.  The top of the lamp shade is open, making it easy to change bulbs.

Location

Once the lamp was assembled, we needed to find a home for it.  For our family, we decided that the best location would probably be in our living room, so we removed the end table and lamp beside our sofa and put the Maxwell in its place.  The first thing that we noticed was that it was a bit wobbly on the carpet due to the small base.  Most new homes these days in our part of the country are built with hardwood floors in the living room, so this won’t be an issue for everyone.  Although the lamp looks great here, it didn’t really function too well for us.  Unlike the end table, the charging shelf is too high above the couch arm and felt awkward, plus it was not quite steady enough to safely hold a glass of ice tea while watching TV.  (As an alternative, it’s worth noting that Brightech makes the Madison, which is an end table with a built-in wireless charger; that probably would have worked better here.)

We decided to try the spot beside our recliner, and we’re much happier with it here. It fits nicely into the niche between the recliner and the fireplace, provides light for reading, and it’s perfect for charging a phone.

I think the lamp could also work well in a study or den and maybe even in a master bedroom if there’s a chair to put it by.

Materials

Brightech’s website says that the Maxwell is a “floor lamp in an all-wood frame.”  I was immensely disappointed when I opened the box and found that this lamp is not made of solid wood but of MDF.  If you’re not familiar with MDF, it’s basically sawdust mixed with resin and wax and compressed with heat and high pressure.  It’s a manufactured product, and while it’s made from wood byproducts, it’s not wood.  It’s neither as durable nor as strong as real wood, and it completely lacks its warmth and beauty.  To hide the MDF, Brightech covers the poles and shelves of the Maxwell with a plastic veneer that has a wood-like pattern.  The only advantage of MDF is that it’s less expensive than real wood.  I hope that Brightech chooses to be completely transparent and change it website to say “MDF” or “engineered wood product” instead of “all-wood.”

What I like

  • Asian, modern design
  • Wired and wireless capabilities
  • Chargers built into the lamp

What I’d change

  • Be transparent about using MDF (or use real wood)

Final thoughts

The Maxwell has found a nice home in our living room, and I’m super happy with the functionality that it provides.  I really like the way that Brightech has integrated charging capabilities into a floor lamp, and I’m hoping that this concept finds its way into other furniture in our house.  Whether or not you should consider buying the Maxwell largely depends on upon your views of wood.  If you don’t really care about wood, or if you’re looking to save some money, then you should definitely take a look at the Maxwell.  If, however, you prefer real wood furniture, then you should probably pass.

LumiCharge SmartLamp review

REVIEW – Charging phones is something that everyone in this modern world has to do. Even if you can get days out of your device, at some time you’re going to have to get more power into it. Having a lamp that can offer both a charging space for your flat screen device as well as providing an adjustable color temperature and intensity of light is quite a feat. The LumiCharge SmartLamp fills this space beautifully.

What is it?

An adjustable-arm lamp with adjustable brightness, warm, cool, or mixed light LEDs, as well as charging spaces for Lightning, USB-C, or microUSB. There is a proximity light, desk clock and calendar display in the lamp as well.

What’s in the box?

  • Lamp with charger in the base and pivoting arm
  • power supply with DC 12V output

Design and features

The LumiCharge SmartLamp is available in black, white, and silver-grey. I was sent the white model. The surfaces are all glossy white, and the plastic feels adequate, if not substantial. It’s not fragile, but you can’t grab it and twist it hard. It passed the famous Gadgeteer “creak” test easily.

The base is a circle 1.25 inches high and 6.75 inches in diameter. There is a flattened area on the front face with a thumbwheel. Above the wheel is a smoked grey plastic flap that hinges up to reveal a charging post. The flap rises just past 90º to stay up. The charging post can be changed via the thumbwheel to be USB-C, microUSB, or Apple Lightning. Easy of these charging posts are on a pivot, so you can adjust for the thickness of the devices. There is no way to make them taller, though, so thick cases are not going to work here. The channel that the post is in is wide enough for any of my iOS devices but won’t connect with my iPod case. So it goes.

Across the center behind the charging area are 4 symbols: the on-off circle, up and down arrows that look like carets, and a capital “M”. Behind these symbols is the pivot arm, secured to a shiny chrome-like swivel fitting. The swivel will pivot 45º either way of the dead center. Behind this is an on-off switch for the proximity light (more on this later.) At the rear, opposite the thumbwheel is another smaller flat edge with the power input and two USB-A ports.

At the bottom of the upright arm, there is a domed light, that can be covered with an opaque black cap. This is the proximity light, which, when switched on, will light up when you walk into the room. Above this is a panel 4 inches high that will glow and show a calendar/clock/temp display. This is controlled and set up via pushbuttons on the back of the 13″ high upright. There is a coin battery that keeps this going when the fixture is unplugged. If it’s turned on, this will also light up (it’s back-lit) with the proximity light.

Atop the upright is a 12-inch headpiece. The lens on the bottom has 15 banks of three LEDs – two white on the outside, and one yellow inside. The “M” switches between these rows – cool white, warm white, or soft yellow. This and the dimmable light makes the light extremely adjustable to your lighting needs. The lighting head can go from 0º to 180º with the upright, so you can illuminate a large area if needed. The upright will fold back until the arm touches the base, but it will only angle forward 6º or so from straight up 90º.
The power cord is 60″ from wall to the DC power supply. The power supply is ~1″ x 2″ x 5″ with a 58″ captive center pin cable. That gives you ten feet from a plug to place this unit.

Performance

Adjusting the temperature of light from this lamp is as easy as holding down the arrow keys on the flat base. Changing the Color Temperature is toggled by pressing the “M” key on the base. Holding the on-off button will bring down the brightness. These all happened perfectly, every time I laid a finger on the icons. There is no button on them and no haptic feedback. I have no idea how it “knew” I was holding down the icon, but it did.
The thumbwheel clicks into place for each charging post type, but can easily switch to another position without undue force.

What I like

  • Easy change between all popular USB flavors for charging devices
  • Plugs pivot, so the angles can be changed for different device types
  • Two extra USB outlets to take care of items that don’t fit onto the docking area

What needs to be improved

  • It would be incredible if the calendar and clock would allow you to program a gradual change from cool white to soft yellow as the evening wore on. Far outside the tech here and the price-point, though.

Final thoughts

Having your desk lamp also be able to charge your device is cool. Since it’s adjustable, this should allow you to charge your device whether it’s in a case or not. Very flexible for all devices. I used the proximity sensor for a bit but then changed my desk layout. It was kinda nice to walk into my office and have the light come on when I stepped through the door, rather than having to fumble for the light.

Aukey Aura Lamp review

REVIEW – The Aukey Aura Lamp isn’t your average everyday table lamp. It has a modern design and multi-colored LED lights, all controlled by a remote. I received one recently to review. Let’s see just how different this lamp really is.

What is it?

The Aukey Aura Lamp is a dimmable LED table lamp with a remote control that has 6 lighting modes, 4 lighting speeds, and a lighting memory function.

What’s in the box?

  • Aura Lamp
  • Remote Control
  • AC Adapter
  • User Manual
  • Warranty Card

Design and features

The Aukey Aura Lamp has a modern ring-shaped design with a small footprint (13.9 x 12.6 x 4.72 in), the perfect size for an end table, desktop, or nightstand, and its white color makes it suitable for almost any home interior.

The base and outer-ring of the lamp are made from aluminum alloy, and it’s very well constructed.

The inner-ring is plastic and contains 72 LED lights. According to the specs the LED’s have a lifespan of 35,000 hours.

There’s rubber padding on the bottom that keeps the lamp from sliding around and provides scratch protection.

Power is provided by an AC adapter.

Remote

The included candy bar style remote control allows you to change the lamps modes, brightness, lighting effect speed, and colors. You can also use the remote to save up to 16 lighting presets. Once you save a preset, you can quickly access it using the memory button on the remote.

The remote takes a little getting used to because it has a lot of features. But once you use it a few times, it’s not an issue. And its size should make it a little harder for you to lose between your couch cushions.

One thing I didn’t like was the fact that the buttons aren’t backlit which makes it difficult to use in a dark or dimly lit room.

Note: If you’re giving this as a gift the 2-AAA batteries required for the remote are NOT INCLUDED.

Performance

The lamp is easy to use and has a lot of different functions. You can choose from 6 different lighting modes: static, stack, pulse, chase, three-color chase, and three-color rotate.

When you first plug the lamp in it automatically powers on to the warm white setting, after that it will default to the mode it was in when last powered off.

You can dim the lights when the lamp is in static light mode, there are four different levels of brightness to choose from. If you have children this feature makes it an excellent night light.

The Auto function allows you to choose from warm white light or rainbow swirl with the press of a single button.

Below is a picture of each static color, a total of 7 in all.

The lamp doesn’t get overly bright, so don’t expect it to light up an entire room. But the different colors and animations make it a great mood light. Perfect whether you’re just relaxing, watching tv, or having a party. It would also make a nice accent light for your holiday get-togethers.

To give you a better idea of how the different color animations work I posted a short video of below.

What I like

  • Modern style
  • Easy to use
  • Good build quality
  • Mood lighting
  • Lots of different colors and animations to choose from

What needs to be improved

  • AAA batteries for the remote not included

Final thoughts

Overall, I like the Aukey Aura Lamp for what it is. If you’re looking for a modern lamp with lots of colors and cool animations, then this lamp certainly delivers.
