Nomad Clear Case and Clear Folio iPhone X case review

The cost of repairing the screen on the new iPhone X is $279. All other damage repairs will cost you $549. Even if you purchased Apple Care+ @ $199 screen repairs would still cost you $29 and all other damage would cost you $99.

Either way, protecting your investment with a great case is more important than ever before.

I first became aware of Nomad’s Clear Case from reading an article that our very own Julie Strietelmeier wrote: “While you wait to pre-order the iPhone X, shop for a case to protect it”.

I had reviewed an Apple Watchband from Nomad earlier and knew they produced a quality product.

Upon seeing the Clear Case I immediately fell in love with it. Something about the design was different and new much like the iPhone X it was going to protect. As luck would have it before I got around to ordering the case from Nomad I received a review offer for the Clear Case.

Needless to say, I jumped at the opportunity.

My good luck continued when I received my package from Nomad. Not only did they send me the Clear Case they also included the Clear Case Folio. So this review will cover both cases.

Clear Case

The Clear Case is perfectly balanced. It combines the rustic feel of Horween leather with a sleek, minimalist design. The combination of clear plastic and dark leather give this case a really unique look that perfectly compliments the design of the iPhone X.

To protect your new iPhone the Clear Case has a rubber TPE bumper, which provides full perimeter and screen protection. Not only does it provide protection, it’s also a little tacky so it gives you a better, more confident grip on your phone.

There are plastic covers for the iPhones volume and side buttons as well as cutouts for the speakers and lightning port. The iPhone X’s camera is also well protected by a raised bezel.

The Clear Leather Case gives 6ft drop protection that will ensure your phone stays in one piece.

Inside, the bottom half of the case is lined with a soft micro-fiber to cushion your iPhone.

The Clear Case is also compatible with wireless charging.

Clear Case Folio

The Clear Case Folio is designed exactly like the Clear Case, it uses the same clear polycarbonate and It has the same TPE rubber bumper, cut-outs, etc.

It also offers the same 6ft drop protection and wireless charging compatibility.

The big difference is the leather folio cover which not only protects your iPhone’s screen but also doubles as a minimalist wallet.

The folio is designed with 3 card slots and a cash pocket. Nomad’s logo is also nicely emblazoned on the inside.

The folio is capable of holding up to 6 cards, but I found that anything more than 3 cards and a couple of bills made the case a little to bulky. The sweet spot for me was more like 1 or 2 cards and a couple bills.

Personally, I wouldn’t use this as my everyday case. But its perfect for going shopping, out to dinner, to the movies or anywhere that I don’t want the extra bulk of both my wallet and iPhone in my pockets. However, if you’re in the market for a wallet case they don’t get much better then Nomad’s Clear Case Folio.

Let’s talk about the leather

What separates these 2 cases from others out there is the leather that Nomad uses in producing each case.

The Horween Leather Company of Chicago has been around since 1905. Horween is revered for their traditional tanning techniques. The vegetable tanning method used to produce these hides result in a rugged yet beautiful leather that develops a rich patina with extended use. There are no synthetic tanning chemicals, synthetic dyes, spray paints or spray sealants used in making this leather allowing for it to scuff and scratch naturally, giving each case its own unique look.

It also guarantees that no two cases will ever look the same.

Conclusion

Both the Clear Case and Clear Case Folio are exceptional cases. Each case does a great job of showing off the beautiful design of the new iPhone X as well as providing great protection.

The Horween leather accents give both cases a rugged yet refined look that will only get better the more you use them.

The Nomad Clear Case and Clear Case Folio are priced at $39.95 and $49.95 respectively and can be purchased on Nomad’s website.

Now all you have to do is decide which case is right for you. Or maybe that someone special on your Christmas shopping list.

6 amazing iPhone X cases and why we love them

Your shiny new iPhone X is beautiful, but thanks to its all glass back and front construction, it’s also incredibly fragile. We’ve tested a whole slew of iPhone X cases and have put together a list of our favorite ones. All of the 6 cases listed below offer ample protection for the iPhone X, and they are compatible with wireless charging.

1. Nomad’s Rugged Case – X

Most rugged cases are protective but they tend to be downright ugly. Fortunately Nomad’s Rugged Case – X offers serious protection alongside a sophisticated leather look. The case is made of Horween leather on its back side that gets better looking as it ages, with scratches adding to its character.  Our case has been getting scuffed up yet has managed to become even more attractive! The case features a tough rubber TPE bumper and it offers 10 feet drop protection. You can pick up the Nomad Rugged Case – X for $44.99.

2. Mujjo’s Full leather wallet case

Mujjo is offering another great leather case for the iPhone X, but this one sports quite a thin profile, which is why we like it so much. The case adds minimal bulk and weight to the iPhone X, while offering substantial protection, with the case’s front side being raised enough to protect the display during a drop. The full-grain leather feels great to hold in your hand and doesn’t get greasy. The case also packs in a super slim card slot that can hold 2 to 3 cards. It also features a wide cut out at its bottom side, which helps ensure that it will be compatible with most charging docks. Mujjo’s Full leather wallet case for iPhone X retails for €41.24 and is available in a choice of 4 colors.

3. Incipio Octane

Incipio’s Octane case offers plenty of shock absorption protection in a thin profile. The case’s Flex2O TPU textured bumper is not only protective, but it makes the iPhone much easier to grip. The back side of the case is translucent enough to allow you to subtly show off the Apple logo. Incipio’s Octane case retails for an affordable $24.99 and is available in a choice of 5 colors. The Octane Lux (shown above) offers a similar design but it ups the ante with metallic accent bumpers and retails for $44.99.

4. Speck Presidio Clear + Print

Speck’s Preidio Clear is a 2 layer case that is so confident that it will protect your phone, that it offers a lifetime warranty. The case comes in a selection of translucent designs that includes bicycle prints, floral prints, and even a fun pineapple pattern. However, beware that the case is quite difficult to take off of the iPhone X. Speck’s Speck Presidio Clear + Print retails for $44.95.

5. Incipio Carnaby Folio

For those who prefer folio / wallet style cases, the Incipio Carnaby Folio is an excellent choice. The Carnaby offers a pretty slim profile with 2 slots to hold a few credit cards. It’s also able to switch into a super convenient stand mode with a horizontal or vertical position. Its grey fabric cover offers a neutral but professional look. Incipio’s Carnaby Folio retails for $49.95.

6. Incipio TheMintGardener Collection

Incipio has collaborated with Seattle-based artist, Sarah Simon for a series of three cases.  The Wild Thing Case is made of a single layer of durable TPU, with a scratch-resistant coating, so it should wear quite well. The case is quite thin, yet offers ample protection. But what we especially appreciate is that it lets you show off your iPhone X’s back side while still throwing on a touch of snazzy art. You can pick up the case for $29.99.

Customize a Vaja luxury case for your iPhone X

The Vaja cases I’ve had the luck to use are luxurious cases made of beautiful leather.  They are usually customizable with your color of choice and often with your choice of leather.  This iPhone X case allows you to choose from floater leather, with mixed tanning method resulting in a strong, grainy leather in a variety of bright colors; or bridge leather, with vegetable tanning method resulting in a delicate, soft-touch leather in earthy tones.  Both choices include a premium leather lining.  The phone is held in a hard, polycarbonate shell that is Qi charging-compatible.  The front cover has four RFID-shielded card slots and an extra compartment for folded currency.  Sterling silver (925) accents along the sides of the case add a beautiful accent;  choose from the simple Argento band, crosshatched Neo design, or the sinuous Barhein design.  Prices start at $289.00, and hand-crafting the case takes 25 days.  The Customizable Silver Wallet iPhone X Leather Case is available at Vaja.

Burkley Magnetic Detachable Leather Wallet iPhone X case review

Last year I reviewed several Burkley iPhone 7 cases, one classic case, and one minimalistic wallet. Both very well made and designed to not only protect your smartphone but accentuate it in nicely done Turkish leather. With the release of the iPhone X, Burkley has recently introduced a suite of cases meant to protect Apple’s latest & greatest flagship. For this review, they sent their magnetic detachable leather wallet case for us to check out.

The Burkley magnetic wallet combines 2-in-1 functionality into a single case. A book-style leather wallet and a detachable snap-on case that can be used independently or in combination.

The case is constructed of an impact resistant polycarbonate infrastructure with a piece of well-finished leather inlaid into the back of the case. The smooth rubber finish and natural Turkish leather skin inside the case protects the back of the handset against scratches and smudges.

The case is nicely fitted for the iPhone X, having a very tight fit with zero gaps along the curved edge where the plastic meets the stainless steel sides.

My only gripe in craftsmanship is there is a small gap between the inlayed back leather and the case itself. This space goes around much of the leather. Even though it is a small thing, I envision that void eventually getting ick/dust/crumbs trapped in the gap.

The snap-on case magnetically connects to the leather wallet. As I mentioned above, the wallet has a book-style orientation that is held closed by a magnet flap.

The wallet can hold identification, credit cards, bills, etc. Once broken in, the wallet can hold 6 or so cards and a fair amount of money. I hate to say it, but a majority of the time I need to carry more junk/happiness than this wallet has a capacity for. But my wife was VERY interested in its functionality and form factor. So, if/when she inherits my X next year (when I upgrade to the X+) this case maybe a serious contender as her case.

This case clicks onto the smartphone, covering and protecting nearly all of the iPhone’s sides and back. There are push-throughs for all the buttons and a cutout that allows access to the iPhone’s mute switch. The buttons themselves are easily pressed when desired and have a good tactile feel to them.

The case covers the entire top of the iPhone.

The right side has a single push-thru for the Siri/Apple Pay/power button.

The base of the case has cutouts for the lightning connector and speaker holes.

The Burkley case perfectly wraps around all sides of the X but does not extend above the screen. Which I actually prefer in a case so your thumb and fingers can flow/swipe on & off the screen without bumping into any edging. The case works well with a screen protector, as seen installed in this pic.

While the case itself doesn’t add much bulk or weight to the iPhone, once you add the wallet full of cards and money the combo does get pretty thick. That said, I can see this wholistic single solution working for many folks.

The case feels great on the iPhone, adding grippability and protection without adding much weight or bulk to the sleek and slim device. The leather on the back and rubber sides is a great combination of look, feel, and form while adding a decent amount of protection.

Even the wallet and case combo has a nice feel. It’s combined form factor isn’t too unwieldy and would easily fit in a coat pocket or purse.

The Burkley magnetic detachable leather wallet case also adds a good deal of operational functionality to the iPhone. Not only does it enable you to carry credit cards and money, but allows you to use magnetic mounts and the wallet acts as a stand for watching media content.

The iPhone X’s camera bump is slightly recessed providing greater protection.

In addition to Distressed Coffee, the Magnetic Detachable Leather Wallet Case For Apple iPhone X is also available in: Burnished Tan, Pebble Black, Antique Golden Brown, Distressed Antique Camel and Saffiano Navy Blue.

Overall, I like the Burkley’s detachable/magnetic leather case and wallet combo. The pair adds both protection and functionality to the iPhone X. Its detachability and magnetic interface make it extremely versatile as well. The rubber and leather case gives excellent grip-ability to the very slick iPhone. A solid choice for consideration if you’re looking for this kind of wallet/case combo.
