Brightech Owen Nightstand review

REVIEW – It’s back-to-school time, and folks are thinking about changing where they live, setting up dorm rooms, and generally getting ready to snuggle down and study. Having a cozy corner with a lamp and a place to sit your coffee/tea/adult beverage has been a necessity since students read by oil lamps and candles. Nowadays, however, having places to charge laptops, tablets, or phones are just as important. BrightTech has recently released a table they call Owen that incorporates a lamp, a wireless charger, and both a USB port and an AC plug. I was sent a sample to test and have been using it for a few weeks now.

What is it?

A wooden table 19” diameter and 23.5” high with a built in lamp, power ports, and a wireless charging area.

What’s in the box?

Everything you need except a power outlet!

  • Wooden tabletop 19” in diameter with charger, leg sockets, and lamp connection kit assembly
  • Top and bottom powder-coated rings for the shade
  • Collapsable shade cover
  • Two-piece prewired lamp with socket
  • Harp and wooden finial
  • Three solid wood legs with metal sockets installed

Design and features

When the box containing the Owen table arrived, I was sure it was something else. Even when I opened the outer box and saw the picture, I was sure there would be another box with the shade or something. When I opened it, I was amazed at the compact and complete packaging. All the pieces are cleanly finished, made of quality materials, and fit together on the first try. I think it took all of 15 minutes to unpack, take photos, and assemble.

Setup

Setup is pretty straightforward.

  • Screw in the legs to the pre-attached threaded studs.
  • Connect the two tubes of the lamp assembly (prewired).
  • Pass the wires through the hole in the table.
  • Tighten the threaded holder for the lamp. (See detail in picture above.)
  • Attach the power cable to the table’s electronic assembly. (See detail in picture below.)
  • Unroll the shade cover and click the two wire circles into the clips of the shade and press the Velcro seam together. (Shade clips shown in second picture below.)
  • Attach the harp to the two clips on the side of the socket and screw in the bulb.
  • Attach the shade to the harp with the included finial.
  • Place the table where want it and plug it into the wall.

Performance

The built-in wireless charger works really well. It’s not fiddly or touchy, like some disk chargers that let the phone slide off the sweet spot due to the vibrations of walking nearby. The switch for the light is tight and always works. The light from the bulb is a very white light, but the shade diffuses it well.

The AC and USB ports have a red light that glows when the unit is plugged in, which is really bright if you’re using this for a night table. I wish they would have mounted the plugs in the back or under the table so that light wasn’t always shining out and the ugly plugs didn’t show. Be aware, this table is not heavy-duty (Load limit is 2.5 pounds), so don’t pile it up with huge volumes.

What I like

  • Easy to assemble
  • Looks surprisingly good for a kit table
  • Everything you need is in the box

What I’d change

  • I wish the red power light wasn’t so bright or visible.
  • Plugs could be around back, rather than on the front.
  • The Velcro seam in the shade is really ugly.

Final thoughts

For what it is, it’s a really nice little piece of furniture for a casual room like a reading nook, dorm room, or man-cave. I would have liked to have something like this when I was grad school, rather than the whale oil lamps we used back then!

Price: $80.99, on sale for $79.99

Casper introduces Glow a light designed for better bedtime

NEWS – Casper is best known for making mattresses and pillows, now they’re getting into the bedroom lighting game with the introduction of their latest product the Glow. The Glow is a self-dimming light designed to help you wind down naturally for a better, deeper nights sleep.

When you turn the Glow on it begins a 45-minute drift pattern that starts out with warm, bright light and gradually dims like the sunset. You can use the Glow app to schedule a wake-up time, so in the morning it will gradually fill the room with soft, warm light to gently wake you up.

The Glow is gesture activated and can be turned on or off just by flipping it over. A built-in gyroscope lets you dim or brighten the light with just a twist. And the Glow is portable so you can use it in the middle of the night to light your path to the bathroom just by wiggling it.

Glow can be used with or without the Glow app. The app allows you to set wake-up times and sync and manage a group of Glow lights together. Once synced up, when you interact with one light all the other lights in the group do exactly the same thing.

The Glow is cordless and comes with a small base for easy charging.

The Casper Glow Light can be purchased from their website for $89 for a single light or $169 for a double. And just like with their mattresses you get a 30-night risk-free trial to try it out.

You won’t need an electrician to install a Mr. Beams wireless motion-sensor ceiling light

NEWS – Have a dark closet in your house or a dark garage?  Maybe you could even use a light over your shower, but you don’t want the expense of hiring an electrician to run wiring to install the fixtures you need.  You won’t need to run wiring with the Mr. Beams Wireless UltraBright Motion Sensor Ceiling Light MB990.

This ceiling fixture installs in about five minutes with the included mounting plate and screws.  Power is supplied by four D-cell batteries, which should last about a year with average use of about eight illuminations per day.  The MB990 produces 300 lumens to illuminate about 300 sqft.  Motion detection triggers the light from about 18 feet away; the light turns off after 20 seconds of no motion.

And remember I mentioned a light in the shower?  The Mr. Beams MB990 is IPX4-rated for outdoor and shower use.

There are other styles of Mr. Beams wireless fixtures if this one doesn’t fit your needs.  The Mr. Beams Wireless UltraBright Motion Sensor Ceiling Light MB990 is $29.99 at the Mr. Beams website.

Add solar lighting to your house gutters with this set from Falove

NEWS – Most DIY solar landscape lighting seems to be the sort installed in the ground to light a pathway or to wash a wall or a plant in lights.  These Falove solar-powered lights can be attached to your house’s gutters to light up an area where you could never plant them in the ground – like the front of a garage, as seen in the above image.

Each light contains a 2V, 100mA solar panel that charges the included rechargeable AA battery.  The light sensor automatically turns the light on at twilight to illuminate the area with bright white light produced by the three LEDs.  The fixtures are about 3 inches by 5 inches in diameter.  They are water-resistant, heatproof, and weatherproof.

As mentioned, they can be installed on your gutters, but they also work on walls, sheds, fences, or most any flat surface.  They are easily installed and require no wiring.  A set of six Falove Outdoor Solar Gutter LED Lights is $27.99 or a set of eight is $35.99 at Amazon.

Philips announces the Adore mirror with smart Hue lighting

NEWS – Philips has announced a new fixture that can replace both the mirror and the over-mirror light in your bathroom.  It can be used as general lighting for the room, and it can provide task lighting for shaving or applying makeup.  The new Philips Adore bathroom mirror adds to your existing Hue bridge that controls all your other Hue lights.  Just like those lights, the Adore mirror can be controlled using your smart phone app, Alexa voice commands, or with the included switch/remote control.

The switch mounts to the wall and is used to power the mirror on or off or to dim the light.  The button bar pops off the mounting plate so you can use the remote to adjust the lighting while you’re relaxing in the bath.

The circular mirror has a 22″ diameter and protrudes 2.0″ from the wall.  It uses a 40W LED bulb to produce 2400 lumens.  The light color is 2200-6500 Hue White Ambiance.  It can be adjusted from energizing white light to get you awake and ready for the day to a warm, relaxing light to help you wind down from a busy day while showering or soaking in the tub.

The Adore mirror was designed for the humid environment of a bathroom; it is DAMP-rated by UL.  Philips says:  “It was tested rigorously to ensure its water resistance. The IP level is described by two figures: the first one refers to the protection level against dust, the second against water. This bathroom light is designed with IP44: it is protected against splashing water, this product is most common and ideal for bathroom use.”

The Adore mirror isn’t yet available, but Hue says it will sell for $249.99.  Learn more at Philips.
