Having a small kitchen no longer means you can’t have gourmet appliances

Having a tiny kitchen meant, in the past, that you couldn’t have a gourmet kitchen.  That’s no longer true with Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances.  They’ve offered 30″ dual-fuel ranges, cooktops, wall ovens, and counter-depth fridge/freezer units for some time now, but now they’ve introduced 24″ and smaller appliances for the tiniest of kitchens.

Sub-Zero now offers integrated counter-depth column refrigerator modules as narrow as 24″ and freezer modules as narrow as 18″, so you can custom design your refrigerated storage.  They also offer 18″ wine fridges and 15″ wide ice makers.

Wolf offers a variety of cooking options for the small kitchen, including a 24″ 3-burner induction cooktop, a 24″ E Series Transitional built-in single convection oven, 24″ built-in steam ovens, built-in drop-drawer microwave, and a built-in coffee system.

Go to the Sub-Zero / Wolf website to learn more and start planning your dream kitchen.

Hungry like the Wolf? Try this multi-function cooker!

I’ve known about Wolf’s ranges, cooktops, and ovens for years, but I was recently surprised to learn that they make countertop appliances, too.  This Multi-Function Cooker really caught my eye when I was looking for a replacement slow cooker when the one I have stopped working.

This cooker has a stainless-steel construction, oven-proof glass lid with a rubber gasket, and a removable tri-ply stainless cooking vessel.  The LCD display and intuitive programmable controls make it easy to select a cooking method and time.  The key features and cooking methods are:

  • Manual Slow Cook: Cook on low, medium, or high heat for up to 24 hours
  • Meal Timer Slow Cook: Set the number of cooking hours based on when you want to serve the meal so you’re not limited by the recipe time
  • Program Slow Cook: Select one or two heat settings and cooking times for customized cooking, or insert the temperature probe into the food and set the temperature to your preferred doneness
  • Rice: Cook 6-18 cups of white or brown rice
  • Sauté/Sear: Precise sautéing and searing on low, medium, and high temperature settings
  • Sous Vide: Gently bring foods to a precise temperature in a warm water bath using the probe.  The included sous vide rack keeps your food submerged for even cooking
  • Versatile Cooking Vessel Included: Removable, 7 quart, stainless steel tri-ply vessel can be used like a Dutch oven, both in the oven and on any cooktop, including induction, and is dishwasher safe

The cooker measures 17.25″ x 12.25″ x 12.5″ and weighs 28 pounds.  It uses 120V at 60Hz power to produce 1300W of cooking power.  Included with the cooker is a temperature probe, removable stainless steel tri-ply cooking vessel, removable sous vide rack, use and care guide, and a quick tips cooking guide.

The Wolf Multi-Function Cooker is $599.95.  Learn more about this cooker and the other countertop appliances and locate a dealer near you at the Wolf website.

AIRFREE P2000 Air Purifier review

As I continue to look at as many as possible air purifiers to combat the allergies that my kids and I battle against every season, I “jumped” at the opportunity to test and review another one. Let’s see how it stands up to the test.

What is it?

The AIRFREE P2000 is an air purifier that as per the manufacturer “destroys mold, dust mites, bacteria, viruses, pollens, pet dander, tobacco and other organic allergens”.

What’s in the box

In the box, you will find the AIRFREE P2000 Air purifier and the instruction booklet.

Design and features

The AIRFREE P2000 is a small compact air purifier that is made of sturdy plastic with a built-in power cord. It is approximately 10 inches high and 8 inches in diameter and weighs only 3 1/2 pounds. The manufacturer’s specs state that it is effective in any room up to 550 square feet, and it has a small enough footprint that I think would allow it to blend in well with almost any decor. It is filterless and completely silent and requires no maintenance.

At the back of the P2000, there is the brand name, a few air vents, a touch sensor above the brand name that controls the adjustability of the night light, and the power cord.

On the top of the P2000, there is an adjustable night light that as you increase the intensity via the touch sensor, goes from white light to an intense blue light.

Performance

After plugging in the AIRFREE P2000, I began to feel the difference after about 2 days. I normally suffer from allergies that include symptoms like watery and itching eyes, sneezing, and the occasional rash and runny nose. This air purifier seems to do a pretty good job and at remarkably reducing those symptoms. It is completely quiet, and the built-in night light is a plus. It is filterless, so there is no maintenance, but I do wonder how I would know if the filtering process ever failed, other than the possible clue if my symptoms return. Otherwise, the performance so far has been good, and I will keep paying attention to see how long it remains noticeably effective.

What I like

I like the compact size of the P2000, and the fact that it is filterless thus cost-effective, and completely silent.

What can be improved

In my opinion, the P2000 seemed to take almost 2 days before I began to feel its effectiveness, albeit that after that it did work quite well. Also, if it ever stopped working properly due to some unknown factor, there should be a display that could relay the status. Otherwise, as a filterless system with nothing to check, it would just be plugged in continuously as if working and regardless of its status.

Final thoughts

This is the second Air Purifier that I have tested since ditching my conventional HEPA air purifiers, and I must say that I am pleased with both devices. While the first one is simply amazing, more effective and more capable than the AIRFREE P2000, it also costs $800. For a room that is 200 to 300 square feet, this Air Purifier works quite well, and will now serve as the allergy deterrent in my living room.

Price: $269

Look up in the air, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s the Heroshelf!

Here’s another gift idea for your dad or anyone else who might appreciate a super shelf for all their favorite EDC gear. It’s the Heroshelf from Animi Causa and it looks pretty fly (sorry, I couldn’t help myself…). The Heroshelf is made of metal and features an iconic silhouette of a Superman-style superhero in midflight. The whole thing is 16.73 inches long and has a flat surface large enough for a phone with some smaller items, and the ability to hold other items like keychains, a watch, etc. on the arms, legs, and cape which act like hooks. It’s priced at $49.00 from Animi Causa.

The Smarterware product line means no more wasted food – finally there is an app for that!

I am sure that all of the Gadgeteer readers that have been following my news stories and reviews regularly know by now that I am a serious gadget nerd. So I am figuring that you may be initially surprised when I start chatting about food containers. After all, I don’t ever recall putting batteries in my Tupperware bowls, or somehow making food appear in the bowl with a fancy remote control, so why would I even bother to mention bottles or bowls.

Well, I just recently learned about a company call Ovie that has created a product line call Smarterware. Smarterware is being touted as the world’s first connected food storage system, and by connected, I really do mean that there is an app for it!! The concept involves smart tags that you put on all of your containers in the fridge, and the app will remind you when you are getting to the point that the food in each container will spoil. I am forever frustrated about the amount of food that gets thrown away in my house that I am so happy that there is finally an app for that.

“The Smarterware product line consists of Smart Tags, 6-cup containers, clips, and universal connectors that can attach to any container or bottle in a fridge”. Each tag has a built-in light ring that gives off a visual light to immediately let you know the status of the food in each container. Green is good, yellow is for hurry up or you will be hungry, and red is for “sorry!!” you are too late and you need to buy or cook more food because time has run out for that dish. Ovie even went one step further by integrating with Alexa and other smart home hubs, recipe apps, and grocery apps.

Ovie plans to begin shipping Smarterware in early 2019, and retail sets will start at $59.99 and will be available at the Ovie website.
