The new Heated Razor from Gillette Labs is hot – literally

NEWS – In an effort to make shaving more comfortable, many razor companies have added more blades, taken away blades, or made their razors with handles that vibrate. Gillette’s latest entry in the ongoing razor race is to add heat to the equation. Specifically, in the form of a wirelessly charging razor with a warming bar.

The one thing that most folks do when shaving, aside from making sure they have a razor and some type of lubricant, is to heat up the area they are intending to shave. As I shave in the shower, I usually run my face under the water for a few minutes to soften up my beard. Now, with the heated razor from Gillette, I can skip the face soaking and go straight to shaving.

To heat the warming bar you simply press the power button. According to Gillette, it takes one second to reach full temperature. On first use, it will heat to the higher of the two available settings. This can be adjusted by pressing and holding the power button to cycle between high and low heat. Once set, the razor will remember your preference.

The handle is a bit bulkier than the normal Gillette Power, or other vibrating razors, but not uncomfortably so. Although you can’t use your existing cartridges, as the handle has a different connection, it uses the same Fusion ProGlide blades.

The Gillette Heated Razor comes with the handle and charging base, along with a pack of cartridges. It started as an Indegogo campaign, which sold out, and is now available for preorder from Gillette On Demand for $200 (expected to deliver in time for Father’s Day).

Versadesk Ultra-Thin Office Treadmill review

REVIEW – Raise your hand if you have an office job where you sit all day. For several years we’ve been hearing that sitting is the new smoking. Even if you workout several times a week, if you still sit behind a desk all day, you’re doing damage to your overall health. How do you change that behavior? You can get a standing desk to start and to raise the bar, you can get a treadmill to pair with your standing desk. Let’s take a walk on the Ultra-Thin Office Treadmill from Versadesk.

What is it?

The Ultra-Thin Office Treadmill is obviously a treadmill, but it’s not exactly like a traditional treadmill that use at the gym or that you might already own at home. This treadmill is mini-sized, easy to move, and has no handles to get in the way.

What’s in the box?

  • Versadesk Ultra-Thin Office Treadmill
  • Remote control
  • Power cord
  • Belt adjustment tool
  • Oil
  • User manual

Design and features

The Versadesk treadmill is 52 inch x 21 inch and has two wheels on the front that allows you to lift the back of the treadmill to roll it into the right position under the desk.

The power cable connects to the front of the treadmill and the power switch is located next to the cord.

Also on the front edge of the treadmill is a live dashboard that tracks time, steps, speed, calories and distance during the session. This data isn’t saved between sessions and resets when you cycle power on the treadmill.

Below the LEDs is a touch power button with individual + and – speed buttons on either side. In my opinion, the location of these buttons is strange because you can’t tap them with your foot while the treadmill is in motion unless you want to take a tumble. Luckily, a remote control is included with the treadmill.

The remote provides a much safer way to control the treadmill while it’s in motion. There’s a power button and buttons to increase and decrease the speed. There’s even a wrist strap.

To use the treadmill, you’ll want a standing desk. Versadesk sent me their Sunrise Desk Riser motorized desk so I could better test the treadmill. This is a really nice standing desk that sets on top of your regular desk and has one button that raises the desk platform and one button that lowers the desk platform.

With the treadmill in place, connected to power, and powered on, you’re ready to get more active. Using the remote control, you can press the power button and the treadmill’s anti-slip belt will begin turning at the lowest speed of 0.8mph. Using the speed increase button on the remote, you can crank up the speed to a maximum of 6mph.

The Versadesk Ultra-Thin Office Treadmill can accommodate walkers of up to 200lbs and although it has an anti-slip belt and a sturdy base, I don’t think it’s recommended that you run on it. In my opinion, it’s for walking only. This is mainly because the length of the belt (40 inches) isn’t long enough for running.

For walking, the treadmill is smooth and not unlike many other treadmills that I’ve walked on when it comes to the feel of walking on it. You do have to adjust the way you walk on it because the Versadesk treadmill’s belt is not as wide as traditional treadmills. The Versadesk’s belt is 14.5 inches wide vs. the 20 inch wide belt on my standard treadmill.

What I like

  • Compact
  • Relatively easy to move around as needed
  • Can store vertically if you attach it to a wall

What needs to be improved

  • On deck control buttons should be removed as it’s not safe to use them while walking on the treadmill
  • Handheld remote is IR so it needs to be able to point to the front of the treadmill which can cause potential problems for the walker

Final thoughts

If you’ve been looking for an easy way to get more active without paying for a gym membership and scheduling workouts, adding a standing desk and portable treadmill is an easier way to move more while you’re working on other things. It does take some time to get used to walking and working on a computer, but it’s not too bad of an adjustment.

I like the Versadesk Ultra-Thin Office Treadmill because it’s easy to place where it’s needed, isn’t too loud, and is comfortable to walk on. With a setup like this, you’ll be able to burn more calories than you do while sitting and your body will love you for it.

Naipo Shiatsu Kneading Massager Neck & Shoulder Massager with Heat review

REVIEW – Living and working in NYC can be rewarding and exciting, but that benefit is usually overwhelmed by the level of stress that is an inherent part of life in this city. My life in NY is no exception, and many nights I usually have to ask my already tired wife to massage my tense and aching shoulders. The Naipo Shiatsu Kneading Massager Neck & Shoulder Massager with Heat sounds like the perfect answer to my aching shoulders and to me bothering my already tired wife.

What is it?

The Naipo Shiatsu Kneading Massager Neck & Shoulder Massager with Heat is a personal and portable massager that includes the versatility for it to be used to massage various parts of your body.

What’s in the box

1 x Naipo Massager
1 x User manual
1 x Car Power Adapter
1 x AC Power Adapter

Design and features

Features

Professional Shiatsu Massage: This Shiatsu neck and shoulder massager comes with 4 big nodes and 4 small ones, which apply deep tissue massage on your neck, shoulder, upper back, lower back, waist, thigh, calve, leg, feet, and arm areas helping release stress, relieve sore muscles for full body parts

Advanced Heating Function: The electric kneading massager has an infrared heating massaging feature; Together with the 8 massage nodes with soothing heat, the massager can be used to relieve muscle pain and tension after an exhausting day

Adjustable Massaging Intensity: This massager machine also features 3 variable speeds to customize your own massaging style: Low Intensity for normal muscle pain relief and relaxation; Middle and High Intensity for tight knots and tense muscles and acupuncture points

Suitable for the Whole Family: Made of skin-care premium breathable mesh and PU leather, this versatile massager works well both for the elderly and young; Relax with it regularly for 15-30 minutes per day

The massager is covered in a  very soft and smooth material that feels like leather, but I am not sure that it is in fact leather. It is well made and seems like it would last a long time while enduring the abuse associated with frequent use.
On the inside of the massager where the device touches your body to perform the massaging function, there is a soft cloth type material that covers the contoured surface and the massaging mechanism that includes massaging beads/balls. The surface is designed to contour around the shape of parts of your body. There is also a connection cable with a jack on the end for you to plug in either of the 2 included power adapters.
On one of the massager “arms” there is a control pad that allows you to manipulate the functions and settings of the device.

Performance

The massager arrives in a brown box as shown below with no additional packaging other than a clear plastic bag covering the actual device. Despite the minimal protection, it arrived in perfect condition, and set up is plug and play.

It provides great massages with the ability to vary the speed of the movement of the massage and the direction. The heat option works well and adds to the experience in a positive way.

Caution: This device provides a deep and timed massage using the built-in massaging beads/balls. I have found that restarting the massage cycle once it is completed just because you are enjoying it, will result in aches and soreness the next day that will last for a few days. In other words, one massage cycle per body area is good enough. Do not overdo it.

Here are some pics of how it can be placed and used:

What I like

  • The build quality
  • The feel and the effectiveness of the massage
  • The versatility of applying the device in several ways

What can be improved

  • Safer and more protective packaging

Final thoughts

Whenever I go to the mall near my home, I often try to take a few moments to sit and relax in the public massage chairs. For $1, they provide a 3-minute massage that actually works well as a deep massage. It feels like my back is being kneaded by small fists and the result is really relaxing. This Naipo Shiatsu Kneading Massager Neck & Shoulder Massager does the same but with the added benefit of heat as desired. I am loving this massager, and for the price, in my opinion, it is a good value. I have no issue giving it two thumbs and a well done!!

Price: $49.99

Hairmax LaserBand 82 hair growth laser light device review

REVIEW – As a man starting to hit middle age a lot faster than I would like, one of the biggest realities I’ve had to face is the onset of male pattern baldness. In all reality, I could think of much worse fates to be honest, but around Christmas, I had a picture taken from behind and it was an eye-opener as I realized the spot on the back of my head was thinning much faster than I had thought. I have naturally thin hair as well, so any additional thinning just isn’t a good thing for me. So, when the call was sent out for a review of the Hairmax LaserBand 82, I jumped at the chance. Worse case scenario in my mind was that I’d be no worse off in the end.

Now, this review is going to be a bit different from most reviews here at the Gadgeteer. While most products we look at are pretty straight forward and can be reviewed in a day or two, this product recommends a full 26-week usage cycle to see full results, with continued usage beyond that time period to maintain results. Thus, I will have this initial post with my first 4 weeks of usage and then updates monthly until I reach the full 26 week period. Before I get into the meat of the article, let’s get the basics out of the way.

What is it?

The Hairmax LaserBand 82 is a laser therapy device intended to reverse the hair miniaturization process by stimulating and energizing hair follicles using a crescent-shaped laser band that you move across your head in 30 second or 4 second intervals. Three treatments a week for about 90-120 seconds per treatment is sufficient to provide results according to their documentation.

What’s in the box?

  • HairMax LaserBand 82
  • Charging Cord
  • Product Instructions and Usage Guide
  • Storage Bag

Design and features

The LaserBand is rather lightweight at 15 ounces. The 82 in the product name refers to the 82 laser heads within the band that provide the laser therapy. There are removable teeth on the front and back of the unit that help part and move hair out of the way to expose your scalp to the lasers throughout the treatment. I note that these are removable because you can order different size teeth based on your head size to adjust the fit of the band. Turning the unit on is very simple, there is a power button on the right side of the unit that you press once for 30-second treatments or twice for the 4-second treatments. At each interval, it vibrates to let you know when to move it back to the next section of your scalp. If using 30-seconds, you go through one full movement front-to-back through your hair, if you use the 4-second interval then you do 6 cycles front-to-back to complete a treatment.

Also, it has a pretty cool Sci-fi look to it during treatments!

Setup

Other than providing a 4-5 hour charging period before your first treatment, there isn’t much set-up to this device unless you find you need to change out the teeth for head size adjustment – instructions for doing so are included but you’ll need to buy the teeth separately.

There are guidelines on who this treatment is optimal for, as well as results for patients who have been subject to clinical trials.

From the chart above, you can see there are varying hair types that have proven to be successful. I fit within the category III for men. Unfortunately, this product hasn’t been clinically tested for Type 5 or 6 skin types, which is listed as dark brown and black skin tones. Now this doesn’t mean it won’t work, just that it hasn’t been clinically tested on those skin types. I fit in Type 1 skin tone.

Performance

The documentation included within the package indicates that weeks 0-12 will most likely not produce noticeable results. But I took a picture each week to keep track. Upper left is week 1, upper right is week 2, lower left is week 3 and lower right is week 4.

So, as you can see, there isn’t much as far as visible results thus far, but that is to be expected. This will provide a good basis for comparison as the weeks go along.

As far as the actual device, it is not uncomfortable to use at all. The teeth feel just like a heavy comb or brush as I push the unit back through my hair. It’s recommended to keep it as tight to the scalp as possible as you move it, so it kind of massages the scalp along the way as well. There are several warnings to refrain from looking directly into the lights, which isn’t always the easiest to do when taking the unit off your head. Turning the unit off takes a long press of the power button, but you have to be looking at it to know whether it turned off or not. Maybe having an additional distinct vibration when powering off would be helpful to avoid the risk.

What I like

  • Ready to go out of the box, no assembly, simply charge it.
  • Easy to use, 3 times a week in 90-120 treatments.
  • Comfortable – I was really afraid the band wouldn’t feel comfortable sitting on my head.

What needs to be improved

  • Power button isn’t easy to use while also avoiding eye exposure on some level when removing the device
  • I’ll hold off on any other “needs improvement” until I’m further into the treatments.

Not-Quite-Final thoughts

Thus far, the Hairmax LaserBand 82 has been a breeze to use. I’m hopeful that in another 8-12 weeks, I’ll see some significant changes start to take place. At the $799.00 price point, I would expect that it does produce some recognizable results.

Until my next update, thanks for stopping by.

Get buff with the Tonal Smart Home Gym

NEWS – What would you get if you put a Bowflex weight machine, a flat panel tv and a bunch of machine learning algorithms into a blender? Well, probably a huge mess, if you could even find a blender large enough. The other, much less probable thing you’d get is the Tonal Smart Home Gym.

At its heart, Tonal is a compact home exercise machine that mounts on your wall and provides you with the ability to do any number of weight-lifting exercises. Two arms fold out from the flat panel and are positionable based on the exercise that you want to perform. The weight resistance is provided by electromagnets capable of simulating up to 200 pounds of resistance.

Similar to Peleton and other connected exercise machines, Tonal also offers a subscription-based training package. This monthly service connects you to several coaches (8 are available as of this writing), each with their own specialty area, and an assortment of exercise videos. If, after a mandatory 12-month subscription, you choose not to renew, you can still use the machine to train yourself.

Users can also purchase an accessory package to enhance their workout. In addition to a bench and foam roller, the package includes a set of smart handles and bar. These allow you to turn the resistance, or weight, off and on, making it easier to get into position for a particular exercise. The handles include a 6-axis gyroscope that allows Tonal to track your movement in three dimensions.

The Tonal Smart Home Gym is available from Tonal for $2,995. The training program is an additional monthly $49.00 fee with a twelve-month commitment. You can finance the Tonal for $199 a month. This price includes a two-year training subscription.
