Modern Christmas Trees are perfect for your Mid-Century Modern or space-age celebration

NEWS – I’m a child of the Mid-Century, and I’ve found that nothing feels like home to me now as much as the furnishings and design elements of my childhood.  Apparently Matt Bliss feels nostalgic about his childhood, too, and was inspired to reproduce a part of his family’s Christmas celebrations for all of us to enjoy.  His grandfather, an engineer and architect named Lawrence “Bud” Stoecker, designed and created the first Modern Christmas Tree for his family in the 1960s from cardboard.  Over the years, he refined his designs and finally determined that Plexiglas was the best material for his minimal, modern Christmas tree.  Just like Matt’s modern version, Bud’s original acrylic trees merely suggested the shape of a tree, so the ornaments became the star of the show.

When Matt’s grandfather was was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he decided it was time to show the world Bud’s wonderful design.  The Modern Christmas Tree debuted at the Denver Modernism Show in 2011, and was a big hit.  Since then, Matt has had the tree photographed in many fabulous Mid-Century homes, where the tree is enhanced by and, in turn, enhances the gorgeous period architecture.  And more importantly for us, Matt has made the Modern Christmas Tree available for purchase.

The Modern Christmas Tree is available in three versions.  First up is the 7.5-foot tall tree; it consists of ten concentric acrylic rings that hang from the ceiling or from an optional tulip-based stand.  The widest ring is 41″.  The rings are available in crystal clear, pearl white, ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, or rainbow.  Each tree is available with or without a set of 192 glass crystals and glass bulbs.   An LED light source stands at the base of the tree, shining light up through the acrylic rings, lighting the tree and ornaments and casting shadows and colors up onto the ceiling and walls.  The Large Tree is $799.99 with the decorations, hanging hardware, and light source; the undecorated tree (for using your own ornaments) is $449.00.  The optional tree stand is $149.00; a sputnik tree topper is available for the 7.5-ft tree for $39.00.  If you need a more compact tree, a 6-foot tall, semi-circular, wall-hanging tree is available for $329.00 decorated or $219.00 undecorated.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bud’s original design, Matt has introduced the Jubilee tabletop tree.  The Jubilee stands 33″ tall, and it comes with a stand and color-changing, battery- or AC-operated LED light source with remote control, forty hand-cut, polished glass chandelier crystals, and four complete sets of shatterproof ball ornaments in silver, red, green, and blue.  It also comes with three toppers – heart, shamrock, and star.  The Jubilee tree and ornaments set is $249.00.

Twinkly App Controlled LED string light review

REVIEW – The holidays are approaching, which means new LED lights to consider! These Twinkly festive lights can be programmed in nearly any color and pattern using your smartphone.

What is it?

This Twinkly set is a 56 LED bulb string capable of displaying millions of colors. Scroll through preset patterns, or use the Android or iOS app to set and program your own patterns.

Hardware specs

  • Lights for both indoor and outdoor use (IP44 certified and rain resistant)
  • Dimensions: 28.2′ long total string; 18.4′ lighted section
  • 100-240V 0.5A 50/60Hz

What’s in the box?

The 56 strand set comes with the power adapter, string LEDs and an instruction booklet.
Don’t like to program? No worries. The LED string works right out of the box. Just press the button on the controller to scroll through the pre-programmed settings.

Setup

The lights pair with your phone by wifi. In these screenshots (iOS) you can see the different preset patterns. You can even create your own patterns with your own colors and blinking pattern.

I was surprised to see a timer feature. I didn’t quite understand how, but the phone doesn’t need to be actively connected for the lights to turn on and off via the timer. To test this, I set a timer on and off time, and put my phone into airplane mode (wifi off, too). The lights still turned on and off at the right times.

Performance

Unless you really want to program something custom, there’s no need for the app. 56 LEDs isn’t a terribly large number, and isn’t as dramatic as this promotional .gif would let you believe.

I recorded how the LEDs look by cycling through the preprogrammed patterns.

What I like

Brilliant colors, tiny but bright LEDs will really brighten up your holiday season. Timer appears to work whether or not the phone is actively connected.

What needs to be improved

The 56 LED string may be a little short to decorate a large tree.

Final thoughts

I found myself playing endlessly with the different customizations, and concluded there’s probably a preset that’s good enough for you.

These Lucid Candles burn forever

NEWS – Candles add a lot of beauty to your home, but they can be messy – dripping wax everywhere.  And since they are consumed when used, they can be quite expensive to use and replace.   You can switch to those fake, battery-powered candles to prevent getting melted wax everywhere, but those are expensive to purchase and require replacement batteries – and they don’t look real.  Lucid Candles are made of real wax but burn a liquid fuel, so they aren’t consumed as you use them.  (Lucid Liquid is liquid paraffin – a highly refined byproduct of the petroleum refinery process.)  They don’t drip wax everywhere, and replacement fluid is less expensive than replacing candles.  And since they have an actual flame, they look much better than fake candles.

Lucid candles look and feel like wax candles. The candle is made of a polymer that never burns down. The body of the candle is a reservoir for Lucid Liquid paraffin. The removable top contains a fiberglass wick that reaches into the reservoir and draws up the liquid. Only the Lucid Liquid is burned – the candle and wick are permanent. Light the wick and enjoy clean, natural candlelight.

The CMAlmay company has been in business since 1892, and they’ve been making liquid candles for use in churches for 30 years.  They are used in 40,000 churches worldwide, and now you can buy them for home use.  The candles are available as tapers and pillars.

Tapers are 11″ tall and 1″ in diameter;  they come with a universal adapter to fit most candle holders.  They’ll burn 5 to 6 hours between refills with Lucid Liquid fuel.  Tapers start at $35.00 each.  Pillars are 3″ in diameter and your choice of 4, 6, or 8″ tall.  Burn time between Lucid Liquid refills vary with size, with the 4″ candle lasting 24 hours, 6″ candle lasting 48 hours, and the 8″ candle lasting 60 hours.  They’ll work with your platform or spike candle holders.  Pillars start at $55.00.  A 1-liter bottle of Lucid Liquid gives 200 hours of burn time for $13.50.  Both tapers and pillars are available in solid colors or decorated with quotes, initials, or decorative images, including holiday designs.

Refilling the candle is simple.  You twist off the top of the candle with a quarter turn, fill with Lucid Liquid,  replace the top and wait 1 minute to prime the wick before lighting.

Lucid candles are available at the Lucid Candle website.
