MyAntenna P1 Laser Distance Meter review

When I was growing up and helping my dad with building projects, he would always remind me, “Measure twice, and cut once.” There were many times my reply was “Dad, I cut this board twice and it’s STILL too short!” I’m sure he would have heard that less often if I had a MyAntenna Laser distance meter.

There are plenty of laser distance measurement tools available, ranging in price from about $20 to hundreds. I’ve used several over the years and they all worked about the same – turn it on, put the end starting where you want to measure and put the laser dot on the other end you are trying to measure, read the display, and done.  Not having to physically move to the other end in some situations can be a lifesaver.

A few years ago, I borrowed a laser distance meter to measure my house for siding. Not needing to pull out a ladder to measure from the ground to the bottom of the soffits was indispensable. If I were to pull out ladders, measuring tapes and get help reading the distance, or give instructions to my non-technical family, the job would have taken considerably longer and would probably have resulted in an argument (only joking, Sweetheart). With a laser distance meter, I could do the job myself.

MyAntenna’s P1 debuted on Kickstarter. I was one of the investors and appreciated the opportunity to review this product. Opening the simple, Apple-esque, white box, the P1 was nested in comfy form-fitting foam. The bright green casing should make it easy to locate on a cluttered job site or in a drawer surrounded by safety pins, screwdrivers and packing tape.  It measures about 4 x 1-1/4 x 5/8 inches, considerably smaller than any similar products I’ve used.  The batteries were not included, apparently due to some shipping restrictions.

After loading it with two AAA batteries, a long touch of the solitary button turned it on and it within two seconds it was making measurements. While taking measurements, the P1 beeps about once a second. It defaults to Metric units and is accurate to 1mm. When turned on, another quick touch of the button turns off the laser and locks the current value on the screen – very handy when measuring something when the display can’t be viewed, Yes, I measured my own height using this feature and, dang, I am so short.  Measurements are from the tail-end of the tool (it automatically adds the length of the tool to the measurement).  Very short measurements, less than about 6 inches or 15cm (or .16ft,  50mm, with the mirror attached) will result in an “Er261.” There a few other errors called out in the instruction manual, such as over temperature and weak signal, but I did not encounter any of these during testing. The P1 also turns the laser off after 90 seconds and the tool off after two minutes.

The display is bright white on a black background and easy to read. In addition to the distance measurements, there is a battery strength indicator and red dot indicating the laser is on.

A really useful feature is “Quick Touch.” When the unit is on, a double click of the button starts a ten-second countdown before measurement starts. This allows a user to position the P1, then move to the destination position, perhaps to position an object for the laser to target. A beep once a second is followed by rapid beeps signaling the final three seconds, the measurement is completed and is latched on the display. Very handy!

For those in countries using Imperial measurements, a triple click of the button toggles measurements from meters to feet, but take note, measurements are in feet and 1/1000th inch – the meter does not display fractions. In other words, six inches is displayed as 0.500 feet.  I would have liked it if the P1 remembered that I use Imperial measurements, but after turning the unit off, it defaults to metric measurements again.

To make things even more convenient, MyAntenna includes a magnetic mirror that attaches to the body of the P1 and allows measurements at 90°. I found this tool to be particularly useful when measuring from one wall to another or from the top of a wall-mounted television to the floor. I found this tool to be particularly useful when measuring from one wall to another or from the top of a wall-mounted television to the floor. The tool “knows” when the magnetic angled mirror is attached and changes the measurement zero point from the back of the meter to the bottom of the meter. Pretty slick!

The MyAntenna P1 is reasonably priced, sturdy, accurate, fun and easy to use. I appreciated that it uses common batteries with its compact size and it’s already replaced the measuring tape in my tool pack. Besides being really handy, when it isn’t measuring something, my cat loves to chase that little red dot around!

Scissors inside a pen, X-Bows ergonomic keyboard, Coolala solar powered AC, and more – Notable crowdfunding campaigns

Check out this week’s picks for crowdfunding projects from Kickstarter and Indiegogo that are worth your consideration.

The Five-Day Performance Dress Shirt by Bluffworks

blurb by Andy Jacobs

What is it?
A dress shirt designed from the ground up for travel and loaded with features, from a company that has proven that it knows how to design and build travel clothes.

Why do I like it?
Lots of reasons! For starters, it features soft-feel fabric in multiple checked patterns. And although it’s soft, it’s still breathable and has 2-way stretchy to keep you cool and comfortable when you’re active. Additionally, travelers will appreciate that it’s anti-microbial, wrinkle free and can be machine washed and dried (or even washed in a sink and hung up to dry). While some or even many of these features may be present in other, similar products, it’s the combination of these features, plus the attention to design detail, manufacturing and quality that puts the Meridian Dress Shirt in a class of its own. It includes brass collar stays, a pattern-aligned pocket and reinforced buttons. And if all of that wasn’t enough, Bluffworks is the real deal. I can tell you firsthand that their Blazer and Travel Pants are top-notch, for travelers or anyone else who appreciates well-designed, well-built clothing.

Where can I find more info?
The Kickstarter campaign began on September 18 and ends October 23, so you have plenty of time to become a backer. In fact, after only a few hours after going live, it exceeded its minimum goal of $10,000 and raised over $65,000 in funds with over 375 backers so far. Pledge packages start at $98 for a single shirt and top off at $280 for a package with three shirts. Estimated delivery is December 2017 for all packages. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Coolala Affordable In/Outdoor Solar Powered Portable Air Conditioner

blurb by Julie Strietelmeier

What is it?
Coolala is the first outdoor and indoor solar-powered portable 7 pound 3,500 BTU air conditioner unit that has 150 square feet of cooling power.

Why do I like it?
It’s been in the 90’s here in Southern Indiana this week, so our AC unit at home has been running like it’s still summer. AC units need a lot of juice, so having a small portable unit that is powered by sunlight sounds like a genius idea. The Coolala has a built-in rechargeable battery that can run for up to 8 hours when fully charged by either plugging it into an AC outlet or by using solar panels. You probably won’t try using Coolala to keep your 3000 square foot house cool, but it would be great for an enclosed patio, camping, a garage, etc. It even has a built-in light.

Where can I find more info?
With 9 days left in the campaign, the Coolala campaign has already met their funding goal of $25,596. You can pre-order a Coolala starting at $219. After the Coolala campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in April 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

X-Bows Mechanical Ergonomic Keyboard

blurb by Julie Strietelmeier

What is it?
The X-Bows keyboard is a QWERTY keyboard that has a unique key layout for better ergonomics.

Why do I like it?
Traditional keyboards are designed so that our fingers, hands, and wrists need to be at a right angle to the horizontal keyboard for optimal typing speed. The problem is that after long sessions of typing, the placement of our hands and wrists can cause pain and discomfort. The X-Bows keyboard positions the keys in a more natural layout that should allow for more comfortable typing without having to learn a brand new key layout.

Where can I find more info?
With 42 days left in the campaign, the X-Bows campaign has already met their funding goal of $32,345. You can pre-order an X-Bows keyboard starting at $119. After the X-Bows campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in December 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Xcissor Pen – One Mighty Scissors Hidden in Your Sleek Pen

blurb by Andy Jacobs

What is it?
The Xcissor Pen is a sharp-looking writing instrument that has a sharp hidden feature inside: a miniature pair of scissors, for those times when a knife blade may just not be right for the job.

Why do I like it?
I’m an EDCer, and I appreciate items that can perform multiple functions. The mininch Xcissor Pen does just that, and looks good doing it, plus it looks durable as heck. Just pop off the main body and disengage the safely lock and you are ready to cut away. The body are made from Stainless Steel and are available in various combinations of silver pen or scissors (nickel plated) or black pen or scissors (Teflon coated) and it uses a Mini D1 Ballpoint Pen Refill. Also, the cap threads on for security, but also posts on the rear for better balance while writing. The mininch folks have already run several other hugely successful Kickstarter campaigns for similar EDC tool gadgets, including the Wrenchit, the Tool Pen and the Tool Pen mini.

Where can I find more info?
The Kickstarter campaign is in full swing and will end November 9, so there is still time to become a backer. It’s worth noting that the campaign has already met its minimum funding goal of $10,000 as of this writing. Pledge package pricing starts at $45 for a single Xcissor Pen and combo packages are available. Estimated delivery is March 2018. Visit the Xcissor Pen Kickstarter campaign page for more details. VIITA Watch – Custom Wearable Fitness Coach

blurb by Julie Strietelmeier

What is it?
VIITA is a smartwatch with regular smartwatch features and fitness features like sleep tracking, stress tracking, heart rate tracking, GPS, dehydration tracking and more.

Why do I like it?
I’ve yet to find a smartwatch that I want to wear day in and day out. The VIITA smartwatch looks promising for a couple of reasons. First of all, runs for up to 4 weeks on a charge which cuts out the huge hassle of charging the watch every night. VIITA also tracks hydration levels which is interesting to me because I know I don’t drink enough liquids and would like some type of visual prompt to help me change that. I also like the My Sets feature that lets you find the right timing between your resting periods and sets, to optimize your muscle growth.

Where can I find more info?
With 30 days left in the campaign, the VIITA campaign just working towards their funding goal of $30,000. You can pre-order a VIITA watch starting at $135. After the VIITA campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in December 2017. Visit their Indiegogo page for all the details.

360 earbuds, HELIO solar battery, inflatable travel bags, and more – Notable crowdfunding campaigns

Check out my 5 picks for this week’s notable crowdfunding projects from Kickstarter. Hey, don’t blame me if you’re always broke!

3D 5.1 Virtual Surround Sound Earbud with Premium Sub Bass

What is it?
360 Earbuds are wired earbuds that simulate surround sound.

Why do I like it?
I was sent a pair of 360 Earbuds to try out and they make it feel like you’re in a room surrounded by the music. The audio quality was very impressive. Music sounded significantly better than my current favorite earbuds: DUNU Titan 1s. Vocals sound much crisper and the bass response is excellent. The only down side to the 360 Earbuds is that they are wired.

Where can I find more info?
With 46 days left in the campaign, the 360 Earbuds campaign has already met their funding goal of $25,000. You can pre-order a pair of 360 Earbuds starting at $55. After the 360 Earbuds campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in December 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

HELIO: Solar Light & Powerbank for Adventures & Emergencies

What is it?
HELIO is a solar powered 150-lumen emergency light with a 5200mAh backup battery.

Why do I like it?
There are all kinds of solar powered power banks with built in flashlights on the market, but I like this one because it can also be used as a lantern and it has a red light mode to prevent problems with night vision. Also, 100% of the profits for this product are used to provide light and power products to those with limited access to electricity.

Where can I find more info?
With 49 days left in the campaign, the HELIO campaign is still working towards their funding goal of $10,000. You can pre-order a HELIO starting at $45. After the HELIO campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in December 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Luna Display

What is it?
The Luna Display is a Mini DisplayPort or USB-C adapter for MacOS devices that turn an iPad into a wireless second display with almost zero lag.

Why do I like it?
I’ve used software solutions that turn an iPad into a second display for my MacBook and while they work, those solutions tend to be laggy and buggy. Luna Display turns your MacOS device into a touch screen device because you can use keyboards and mice with it.

Where can I find more info?
With 36 days left in the campaign, the Luna Display campaign has already blown past their funding goal of $30,000. You can pre-order a Luna Display starting at $55. After the Luna Display campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in May 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Qbit keychain measuring device

What is it?
Qbits are machined brass or stainless Steel metric or standard measuring tools that you can carry in your pocket, on your keychain, or leave at your desk.

Why do I like it?
I like Qbits because I’m a sucker for EDC gear that looks good AND serves a purpose. Semi-regularly I need to measure something and don’t have a ruler with me or any way to record the length of an object. Qbits seem like a cool way to always carry a ruler – even if it a short one.

Where can I find more info?
With 29 days left in the campaign, the Qbit campaign has already passed their funding goal of $1,000. You can pre-order a Qbit starting at $20. After the Qbit campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in November 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

ZIPPELIN: An inflatable, one-of-a-kind travel bag by FREITAG

What is it?
ZIPPELIN is a large travel bag made of recycled truck tarps that compresses down and rolls up into a shoebox sized pack for easy storage when you aren’t using it and inflates to a full sized rolling luggage when you do.

Why do I like it?
I love this idea because I’ve never seen a large travel bag that can fold down that small, and the idea of using a bicycle tire intertube in place of a frame is a genius design. It’s just too bad that they cost over $500 and won’t be available until next year. But still, I think this is a great idea and hope to see it used with other travel bags.

Where can I find more info?
With 29 days left in the campaign, the ZIPPELIN campaign has already passed their funding goal of $119,827. You can pre-order a ZIPPELIN starting at $505. After the ZIPPELIN campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in May 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

VENTURE 4-in-1 camera, Rollgut roll up clipboard, Belle speaker, and more – Notable crowdfunding campaigns

Grab your wallet and take a look at our 5 picks for this week’s notable crowdfunding projects from Kickstarter and IndieGoGo.

VENTURE: The World’s Most Versatile 4-in-1 Camera

What is it?
VENTURE is an HD camera that can be used for live-streaming to Facebook and YouTube Live either via WiFi or 4G/LTE (through your smartphone).

Why do I like it?
I like the VENTURE because it’s much more than just another 1080p action cam GoPro style camera. It’s also a live-stream camera, a dash cam, a body cam, and even a flashlight.

The VENTURE camera has been designed by Wolfcom, the same company that makes law enforcement body cameras, so you know it’s built to last.

It’s expandable too. There is an optional 23hr battery pack, a night vision camera, POV camera, headset camera, pinhole camera and various mounting clips.

Where can I find more info?
With 21 days left in the campaign, the VENTURE campaign is close to reaching their funding goal of $25,000. You can pre-order the VENTURE camera starting at $149. After the VENTURE campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in February 2018. Visit their IndieGoGo page for all the details.

Rollgut: Bring your thoughts to roll

What is it?
Rollgut is a wooden clipboard. But it’s not your traditional clipboard, this one is round and is made of wood.

Why do I like it?
I like the Rollgut because it’s unique and it combines several of my favorite things like wood, pens, pencils, and paper into a portable holder that rolls up and stores in your bag or pocket. And best of all, you don’t to charge it or sync it. You just enjoy the analog way of writing down your thoughts, sketches, and notes.

Where can I find more info?
With 25 days left in the campaign, the Rollgut campaign is still working towards their funding goal of $83,481. You can pre-order the Rollgut starting at $66. After the Rollgut campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in December 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Belle – Bluetooth Speaker and Wireless Hub by Podo Labs

blurb by: Bill Henderson
What is it?
Podo Labs states the Belle has audiophile sound at a fraction of the cost with powerful bass and the ability to sync multiple speakers of any brands.

Why do I like it?
I like Belle because I’m familiar with the extremely expensive Devialet Phantom Bluetooth speaker. Belle appears to be based on the same principle at a fraction of the cost. It has a bass response as low as 35 Hz of window rattling bass. It can be synced up to six wireless speakers of any brand. Belle is a full-range speaker, with two full-range speaker drivers and a bass woofer for a 2.1 stereo system. It will play clear sound with deep and resonant bass that’s not overly boomy and also has a sub mode which will transform Belle into a full Bluetooth subwoofer.

Where can I find more info?
The Belle Bluetooth Speaker campaign has surpassed the funding goal of $50,000 with plenty of spots left. You can donate to the campaign starting with $219 for the slightly less powerful Belle Lite speaker and charger. A $299 pledge gets you the more powerful Belle speaker with charger. The levels of involvement go up to $5,000 which includes 6 Belle speakers and an invitation to a VIP party for you and 25 of your closest friends in Los Angeles. After the campaign ends, shipping is estimated to begin in May 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Cubiio: The Most Compact Laser Engraver

What is it?
Cubiio is a table top laser engraver and cutter.

Why do I like it?
I like Cubiio because it can engrave and/or cut many types of materials including paper, wood, cardboard, felt, leather and more.

It’s small so it doesn’t require a lot of space, it uses your smartphone or tablet to create a G-code file from an image that you want to engrave on the material.

The only bummer is that the Cubiio can not engrave metals… But it still looks like fun for makers and crafty types.

Where can I find more info?
With 12 days left in the campaign, the Cubiio campaign has already earned over 1.2 million more than their funding goal of $25,000. You can pre-order the Cubiio starting at $319. After the Cubiio campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in November 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

The BitzBlade 2.0 – The Last Multi-Tool You’ll Ever Need

What is it?
The BitzBlade 2.0 is an updated version of the original BitzBlade. The new version is a multi-tool with 26 features.

Why do I like it?
I like the BitzBlade 2.0 because it’s a multi-function tool and I’m a sucker for small tools and tool kits. The BitzBlade 2.0 is interesting because it not only offers driver bits, but it also has blades, wrenches, and a flashlight in a small pen-like form factor.

Where can I find more info?
With 41 days left in the campaign, the BitzBlade 2.0 campaign has met their funding goal of $10,000. You can pre-order the BitzBlade 2.0 starting at $55. After the BitzBlade 2.0 campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in January 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

ROBOT RISE! card game, SYWOS One workout device, Eco Scoop, and more – Notable crowdfunding campaigns

Ready to part with some money? Check out this week’s collection of 5 crowdfunding projects that I think look interesting and worthy of your pledges.

ROBOT RISE! Card Game

What is it?
ROBOT RISE! is a 2-4 player card game that has been created by a fellow gadget loving friend of mine Craig Froehle and his family who live in Cincinnati Ohio.

Why do I like it?
I like the ROBOT RISE! card game because robots! First of all, you can play this game with as few as 2 players and a time investment of only 15-30 minutes. The idea is that you are a mad scientist and your goal is to destroy the lairs of the other mad scientists (other players in the game) by building robots.

Besides the fact that I know Craig and want to see him succeed with this campaign, I think the game sounds like a lot of fun.

Where can I find more info?
With 9 days left in the campaign, the ROBOT RISE! campaign is close to reaching their funding goal of $7,500. You can pre-order the ROBOT RISE! game starting at $19. After the ROBOT RISE! campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in February 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

SYWOS One exercise device

What is it?
SYWOS One is a portable workout device that trains opposing muscles in one cycle.

Why do I like it?
I like the SYWOS One because it’s portable, takes up very little storage space, and it can cut your workout time by working two muscle groups because there is resistance in both directions of the movement. It’s not just good for arms, but you can use it to build up strength in your chest, shoulders, legs, and back too.

Where can I find more info?
With 31 days left in the campaign, the SYWOS One campaign has already reached their funding goal of $29,520. You can pre-order the SYWOS One game starting at $117. After the SYWOS One campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in October 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Eco Scoop – Credit card size Pop-up Eating Utensil

What is it?
Eco Scoop is an individually packaged folding spoon designed and invented by a guy who worked for Sir James Dyson for 10 years.

Why do I like it?
Eco Scoop is an easy to carry spoon for on the go eating. When you’re done with it, you can throw it on the compost heap where it will biodegrade in just 4 weeks compared to the 500 years that a typical styrene spoon takes because the Eco Scoop is made of a wood based biopolymer.

Where can I find more info?
With 25 days left in the campaign, the Eco Scoop campaign still has a lot of work to do before reaching their funding goal of $28,350. You can pre-order a pack of 10 Eco Scoops starting at $5. After the Eco Scoop campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in December 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Specdrums: Music at Your Fingertips

What is it?
Specdrums are rings that turn colors into sounds when you tap them.

Why do I like it?
I like Specdrums because you can use them to turn any color into any sound which allows you to easily create your own “instruments” in seconds.

Where can I find more info?
With 23 days left in the campaign, the Specdrums campaign has already blown past their funding goal of $15,000. You can pre-order a Specdrum ring starting at $34. After the Specdrums campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in January 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Spinbox – A DIY Portable Turntable Kit

What is it?
Spinbox is a kit with all the parts necessary (including a speaker) to build a turntable in as little as 30 minutes.

Why do I like it?
I like the Spinbox because it’s a building kit and I’ve always enjoyed building things. Especially things that you can actually use after you’re done building them. This kit doesn’t even require soldering.

Where can I find more info?
With 9 days left in the campaign, the Spinbox campaign has already surpassed their funding goal of $30,000 many times over. You can pre-order a Spinbox starting at $99. After the Spinbox campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in November 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.
