The Silk Magnetic Cable Wrangler is attracted to your charging cables

NEWS – I just can’t help myself. I’m drawn to cable organizers like the Cable Wrangler (see what I did there?) by Silk, a company based in Austin, TX. Silk describes themselves as a “jaunty, down-to-earth, and highly-caffeinated group of folks that, since 2009, have taken our products seriously, but ourselves … not so much” (Silk website).

The Cable Wrangler is a simple device that measures 3.24″ x 3.24″ or 82 mm x 82 mm and uses magnets to keep your charging cables organized on your desk or nightstand. It works with all cables and if the cable is not “attractive enough, use included magnetic collars to boost its Tinder rating” (Silk). It has a “hefty grip that won’t slip” (perhaps a silicone base) and comes with a lifetime warranty – “No commitment issues here” (Silk). These guys are funny! The Silk Magnetic Cable Wrangler – which includes three magnetic collars – comes in two colors, No. 2 Pencil Gray and Lightly Toasted Beige, and is available from Amazon for $19.99.

Fuse Side Kick Collapsible Laptop Charger Winder quick review

REVIEW – Kickstarter alert! The makers of the Side Winder are at it again, this time with a cable winder that attaches right to your power brick. The Fuse Side Kick is collapsible, compact, and keeps your cable nice and tidy. And if you act fast, you can get in on the Kickstarter before it closes on March 6. To the review!

What is it?

The Side Kick is a pop-up cable winder for your MacBook.

What’s in the box?

You get the Side Kick, and an extra adhesive pad.

Design and features

The Side Kick works like one of those pop-out grips for your phone. The front face is a plate made from ABS plastic with a rubberized bumper. The back side is a collapsible disk:

Setup takes moments. You’ll remove the plastic to expose the adhesive on the Side Kick, then simply stick it to the side of your power adaptor. Note that the Side Kick works with any square-shaped power brick. It fits perfectly on my MacBook Pro adaptor.

Once the Side Kick is stuck in place, you pull it out to expand it and wrap your cable. Those little slots on the cap secure the end of the cable.

The net result is that you go from this….

To this:

It’s a super-clean setup that also works when you only need a short length of cord to get to a plug. Simply unwind what you need and hook it through the slots. The fully extended Side Kick only adds about 5/8″ of depth to your power brick.

I loved the original Fuse Side Winder that I reviewed in May last year, and I know several friends and co-workers who bought one after seeing mine. I actually like the Side Kick design is even better. It makes for a more compact overall profile, which makes it easier to stash in your bag.

The model I received is an initial prototype, and Fuse is making refinements for the final design that will be released at the end of the Kickstarter campaign. This will include updates colors and plastics (including a black version), and hard rubber notches to hold the cable ends better. I’m looking forward to putting the final design through its paces in a long term test!

What I like

  • Simple, elegant solution for managing your cable.
  • Compact and clean.
  • Sets up in moments.

What needs to be improved

  • Nothing so far. A simple solution for a simple job.

Final thoughts

Fuse gets simple & functional design, and the Side Kick looks like another winner. But you’ll need to act fast to get in on the initial Kickstarter campaign, which closes on March 6. Fuse has already met their stretch goal for funding, so it looks good to go!

Price: $20.00 on Kickstarter, but some early-bird specials are still available
Where to buy: Go to the Side Kick Kickstarter page.

Don’t get tied up in knots over organizing your cables, use Untie Cord Organizer!

NEWS – I can’t stand a tangled cable mess, so I generally use hook-and-loop ties to organize my cables. But then I saw the Untie Cord Organizer and thought that that would be a clever and really quick way to neatly store my earbuds. The Untie organizer is a bendable stainless steel tie coated in silicone, thus, you no longer have to worry about snagging the hook-and-loop ties on your clothes or other things – just wrap the Untie organizer around your cables and you’re ready to go (or leave them behind your desk or entertainment center)! These ties are a little on the expensive side, so you may only want to use them on your most frequently used cables.

The Untie Cord Organizer (shown in the left photo above) and its sister product, Unlace Silicone Lace (shown in the right photo above) come in a package containing four ties and are available from Amazon. There are two lengths (ten-inch length for $10.95 and five-inch length for $8.95) and multiple colors to choose from. I might be giving these a try in the near future!

Pad & Quill’s new TechFolios will tame your cable chaos

NEWS – When you love gadgets and gear as much as we do, you sometimes run into problems finding the cables needed to charge those gadgets. Throwing them in the bottom of your gear bag isn’t the best habit because it’s hard to see and find them, let alone the fact that they can become damaged by kinking or becoming tangled on other items in your bag. One way around this issue is to have a dedicated pouch just for all your cables and little gear bits. I’m actually working on a roundup video of several gear pouches, and that’s why the new TechFolios from Pad & Quill caught my eye. These folios are designed especially to hold cables and small items. They are made of full-grain leather and are available in three sizes and are priced from $59.95 up to $119.95 for the Pro size. The middle-sized Classic version is available now while the other versions are coming soon. Head over the P&Q for all the details.

Orbit is an iPhone cord organizer with a surprise

NEWS – Are you one of those mobile warriors that shove your cables and adapters into your gear bag with willy nilly abandon only to cuss later on when you find the cables tangled or can’t find the AC adapter that you need to charge your iPhone? The folks at the Hip Product Factory have come up with a solution for that problem with their Orbit cord organizer.

The Orbit accepts the iconic iPhone AC adapter, which slides into the center of the Orbit, while the lightning cable orbits (see what they did there?) around it in a handy storage slot. But wait, there’s more…

By itself, the Orbit is a nice solution for keeping your iPhone lightning cable and AC adapter neat and tidy for transport, but it hides another feature which is handy too. Remove the AC adapter, rotate it so the prongs are facing out, plug it into a wall outlet and place your iPhone in the top of the Orbit which is now a holder while the phone chargers.

The Orbit iPhone cord organizer is available in several colors for $15. You can read more about it at Hip Product Factory and buy one from Uncommon Goods.
