Just say no to brown guacamole with Guac-Lock

I love guacamole! Not that processed pre-made stuff, I’m talking about fresh, hand-made guacamole. The problem with fresh guac is that after a day or two it always gets that disgusting brown color. And none of those home remedies ever seems to work.

Guac-Lock to the rescue

The Guac-Lock is a shatter-proof, odor-proof guacamole container that uses an air-tight seal to help keep your guacamole fresher longer. (It’s also perfect for homemade salsa, hummus, etc.) A gentle push down on the container’s sides removes air and pushes the guacamole to the top. That means no more having to scrap the sides to get that last bit of guac goodness. The preservation container also doubles as a serving dish.
Guac-Lock stores 12 to 24 oz. of guacamole and is dishwasher safe.

Watch the Guac-Lock in action:

$19.95 lets you enjoy fresh guacamole all summer long. Head over to The Grommet for more info or to purchase the Guac-Lock.

Make your own granola bars at home

Granola bars are available everywhere, but sometimes it seems they aren’t really different than candy bars.  If you like granola bars but you want more control over the ingredients, make your own with the Tescoma Granola Bar Press.  The press is made from food-grade silicone and BPA-free plastics, so you won’t worry about adding any unwanted chemicals to your fresh, healthy ingredients.

The press includes three silicone molds, three stackable plastic housings, cap, set of 25 sealable granola bar bags, and a recipe/instructional booklet.  You can make unbaked or baked bars (only the silicone molds are oven safe).  Each bar is 4″ x 1.25″ x 0.5″.  The kit pieces, except for the top cap, are top-rack dishwasher-safe.

The Tescoma Granola Bar Press is $28.00 at The Grommet.  Three extra silicone molds are available for $14.95, and a set of 25 extra BPA-free bar bags are $5.00.

The Gourmia IoT Cool-Cooker has something other slow cookers don’t

Before I fell in love with my Instant Pot, I used a slow cooker to cook chickens and roasts while I was at work during the day. The only annoying thing about using a slow cooker (aka crock pot) is that I’d have to get up earlier than usual to put all the ingredients in the cooker. I don’t like getting up in the morning, so getting up even earlier does not make Julie a happy camper. But the new Gourmia IoT Cool-Cooker might be the holy grail of slow-cookers because it not only cooks your food, but it keeps it cold BEFORE it starts cooking it.

The Gourmia Cool-Cooker has a built-in refrigeration unit that keeps everything cold before it’s time to cook. You can add all the items to the cooker the night before, like meat and vegetables and then control it later from anywhere with an app on your phone to start the cooking process. The Gourmia Cool-Cooker can even be controlled using Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa voice assistants.

The Cool-Cooker is a 6-quart 11-in-1 cooker that can bake, make rice, roast, yogurt, porridge, slow cook, keep food warm, sauté, steam, and sous vide.

There isn’t any pricing info at this time, but the Cool-Cooker will be available at retailers later in 2018. More info will be available at Gourmia.com

Ditch plastic wrap and use this glass spatter guard in your microwave

If you’re anything like me, your microwave is used daily to reheat leftovers. And the interior of your microwave might look like you nuked a small animal if you don’t regularly cover your plates while you’re reheating your food. Or maybe your microwave is clean, but you use plastic storage containers with plastic lids when you reheat your food. If you do either of these things, you should take a look at Cuchina Safe covers.

Cuchina Safe covers are made of borosilicate glass that can handle temperatures as high as 450 degrees. That means that you can use these covers in your microwave and oven without fear that they will melt like plastics can do.

Glass is much safer for you to use when reheating food in the microwave. I’m paranoid to use plastic containers and plastic wrap in the microwave after having an adventure with breast cancer back in 2011. I prefer to reheat food in ceramic or glass dishes and usually place a ceramic plate face down over the dish. This works fine with bowls, but you cant do that with a plate of food like you can with the Cuchina Safe cover.

The covers come in two styles.

There’s the microwave cover that has a scalloped edge that acts as a steam release when face down over a plate. When you flip it over, it doubles as a baking dish.

And then there’s the Cuchina Safe vented flat lid that can be placed over a bowl to protect your microwave from splatters or pots on the stove.

Cuchina Safe lids are priced at $26.95 for one microwave cover & baking dish and the same price for 2 of the vented lids. You can read more about these products by visiting cuchinasafe.com and you can order them from The Grommet and also check prices on Amazon.
