DockCase MacBook sleeve with built in USB C hub review

I love my 12″ MacBook that I bought as a refurb from Amazon a couple years ago. It’s the perfect size and the perfect weight for everyday use and especially for travel. I actually downsized from a 13″ MacBook Pro just to get a smaller and lighter machine. But downsizing also meant that I would have to sacrifice performance and expansion capabilities.

I honestly haven’t had any issues with the smaller MacBook’s performance, but expansion, on the other hand, has been a challenge at times due to the machine only having one port which is used for both charging AND peripherals.  A USB hub is pretty much a necessity with this computer if you ever want to connect something to it like an external monitor, wired keyboard, wired mouse, flash card reader, etc. USB Type-C expansion hubs are a dime a dozen, but have you ever seen a sleeve style case with a built-in hub? You will now because this is a review of the DockCase for the 12″ MacBook.

What is it?

The DockCase is a slim microfiber leather and aluminum sleeve style case for 12, 13, and 15 inch Apple MacBooks that has built-in USB, USB Type-C, Ethernet, HDMI, microSD and SD card readers.

What’s in the box?

  • DockCase
  • USB Type-C to Type-C cable
  • Quick start guide

Design and features

If you didn’t look at the end of the case, you might not even realize that it’s more than a slipcover for your MacBook. Depending on the size of your MacBook, the DockCase comes in several colors like the red version that was sent to me.

On the end of the case, you’ll find the following ports:

1 LAN Ethernet(1000M Gigabit)
1 HDMI Video Output (4K@30Hz,1080P@60Hz)
1 USB C Power Delivery Charging (Up to 100W)
1 USB C 3.1 Data (Up to 5 Gbps)
3 USB 3.0 Data (Up to 5 Gbps)
Multi-in-1 Card Reader (SD-XC, SD, MMC, RS-MMC, SD-HC, Micro-SD)

A third Type-C port is on the side of the DockCase. This port is used to connect the DockCase hub to your MacBook using the included Type-C to Type-C cable.

As a case, the DockCase is just a basic sleeve that’s made of microfiber leather which is a synthetic (fake) leather with the look and feel (but not the smell) of real leather.

The interior of the DockCase has one main pocket to hold the MacBook, and a narrow pocket on the side that holds the included USB Type C to Type C cable.

The short cable is easily removed and stowed in the DockCase when it’s not being used.

My 12-inch MacBook it nicely in the 12-inch DockCase along with the cable.

Using the DockCase with my 12-inch MacBook

To use the DockCase, you connect one end of the included USB C cable into the USB C port on the MacBook and the other end of the cable goes in the USB C port on the side of the DockCase. To keep your MacBook charged you will need to connect your existing charger cable into the USB PD port on the DockCase which is located next to the HDMI port. You can see how the cables are connected by checking the image above.

I do wish that the included Type C cable was a round cable instead of a flat cable, which looks awkward routed from the MacBook to the back of the DockCase.

I tested the DockCase with my 12-inch MacBook connected to 4-year-old 29-inch ultra wide LG LED monitor. The LG monitor is not 4K, but the DockCase is able to handle 4K@30Hz or in my case, 1080P@60Hz. I couldn’t tell any difference using the DockCase’s HDMI vs. using the LandingZone docking station’s HDMI, which is what I’ve been using for the last several months.

The documentation that comes with the DockCase advises that you NOT use the USB ports to charge your phone or other devices. They are supposed to be used for data transfers only. Even so, I had to test them to see if they would actually charge my phone, a Pixel 2 XL. The 2nd Type C port next to the Type C PD port would not charge my phone at all, but the other three USB ports did seem to be charging the phone.

I tested the DockCase’s card slots which worked fine. I was able to read each one individually and transfer files between two cards. I was also able to copy files to and from USB flash drives. So, the hub does work as intended. But there is one problem and that’s heat.

The DockCase hub gets noticeably hot after several minutes of use (especially when you’re connected to an external monitor using the HDMI port). I used an IR thermometer and recorded readings of 100F to as hot as 120F. These temps weren’t hot enough to burn my skin, but the heat did make me nervous that it could become a fire hazard at some point and made me leery of leaving my MacBook connected to it while unattended. That said, the heat dissipates when the MacBook is not being used.

What I like

  • It’s a case with a built-in hub
  • Nice for the newest MacBooks that only have one USB Type-C port like my 12″ MacBook

What needs to be improved

  • The hub gets too hot
  • Not supposed to use it to charge phones or other devices
  • No room for other accessories like a charger

Final thoughts

Having a case for newer MacBooks that combines everyday protection with a USB hub is unique and useful while remaining relatively slim and sleek. If they can solve the heat issue, I think they have a winner on their hands, but as it is, I’m worried about recommending something that could be a fire hazard.

Price: $119.00 – $149.00 depending on size. $119 for the 12″ version reviewed here.

Organize yourself with the new Bellroy Work Folios

I’ve been thinking about adding a folio to my arsenal. I’m running to meetings all day long, and there’s something to be said for having all your paper and electronic doodads readily at hand so you don’t have to fumble around in your bag.

Bellroy has built a reputation for innovative design using premium materials in small carry products, so I’m excited to see how this translates into their new folio designs. Two sizes are available: the A4 size will accommodate up to 8-1/2″ by 11″ (A4) papers/notebooks and a full-sized tablet, while the smaller size will accommodate  5.8″ by 8.3″ notebooks (like a Moleskine) and an e-reader or small tablet. Additional pockets will wrangle your phone, business cards, headphones, and other assorted bits.

After my recent review of one of Bellroy’s new bag designs, I’m sold on the quality of their products. The leather and materials are top notch, and construction is immaculate. And they look amazing. The Bellroy folios retail for $199 (A5 size) or $299 (A4 size). It looks like they *might* not ship in time for the holidays, but they’ll be worth the wait. Check them out at Bellroy’s web site.

Nomad Clear Case and Clear Folio iPhone X case review

The cost of repairing the screen on the new iPhone X is $279. All other damage repairs will cost you $549. Even if you purchased Apple Care+ @ $199 screen repairs would still cost you $29 and all other damage would cost you $99.

Either way, protecting your investment with a great case is more important than ever before.

I first became aware of Nomad’s Clear Case from reading an article that our very own Julie Strietelmeier wrote: “While you wait to pre-order the iPhone X, shop for a case to protect it”.

I had reviewed an Apple Watchband from Nomad earlier and knew they produced a quality product.

Upon seeing the Clear Case I immediately fell in love with it. Something about the design was different and new much like the iPhone X it was going to protect. As luck would have it before I got around to ordering the case from Nomad I received a review offer for the Clear Case.

Needless to say, I jumped at the opportunity.

My good luck continued when I received my package from Nomad. Not only did they send me the Clear Case they also included the Clear Case Folio. So this review will cover both cases.

Clear Case

The Clear Case is perfectly balanced. It combines the rustic feel of Horween leather with a sleek, minimalist design. The combination of clear plastic and dark leather give this case a really unique look that perfectly compliments the design of the iPhone X.

To protect your new iPhone the Clear Case has a rubber TPE bumper, which provides full perimeter and screen protection. Not only does it provide protection, it’s also a little tacky so it gives you a better, more confident grip on your phone.

There are plastic covers for the iPhones volume and side buttons as well as cutouts for the speakers and lightning port. The iPhone X’s camera is also well protected by a raised bezel.

The Clear Leather Case gives 6ft drop protection that will ensure your phone stays in one piece.

Inside, the bottom half of the case is lined with a soft micro-fiber to cushion your iPhone.

The Clear Case is also compatible with wireless charging.

Clear Case Folio

The Clear Case Folio is designed exactly like the Clear Case, it uses the same clear polycarbonate and It has the same TPE rubber bumper, cut-outs, etc.

It also offers the same 6ft drop protection and wireless charging compatibility.

The big difference is the leather folio cover which not only protects your iPhone’s screen but also doubles as a minimalist wallet.

The folio is designed with 3 card slots and a cash pocket. Nomad’s logo is also nicely emblazoned on the inside.

The folio is capable of holding up to 6 cards, but I found that anything more than 3 cards and a couple of bills made the case a little to bulky. The sweet spot for me was more like 1 or 2 cards and a couple bills.

Personally, I wouldn’t use this as my everyday case. But its perfect for going shopping, out to dinner, to the movies or anywhere that I don’t want the extra bulk of both my wallet and iPhone in my pockets. However, if you’re in the market for a wallet case they don’t get much better then Nomad’s Clear Case Folio.

Let’s talk about the leather

What separates these 2 cases from others out there is the leather that Nomad uses in producing each case.

The Horween Leather Company of Chicago has been around since 1905. Horween is revered for their traditional tanning techniques. The vegetable tanning method used to produce these hides result in a rugged yet beautiful leather that develops a rich patina with extended use. There are no synthetic tanning chemicals, synthetic dyes, spray paints or spray sealants used in making this leather allowing for it to scuff and scratch naturally, giving each case its own unique look.

It also guarantees that no two cases will ever look the same.

Conclusion

Both the Clear Case and Clear Case Folio are exceptional cases. Each case does a great job of showing off the beautiful design of the new iPhone X as well as providing great protection.

The Horween leather accents give both cases a rugged yet refined look that will only get better the more you use them.

The Nomad Clear Case and Clear Case Folio are priced at $39.95 and $49.95 respectively and can be purchased on Nomad’s website.

Now all you have to do is decide which case is right for you. Or maybe that someone special on your Christmas shopping list.

Toffee slim leather MacBook or iPad sleeve review

As a gadgeteer, I love computers and gear, but I also love carrying those gadgets in nice cases to protect them. Toffee is no stranger as a brand to the site, so I was finally able to get my hands on a nice looking leather sleeve for my MacBook Pro.  The Toffee slim leather sleeve is sleek, sophisticated, and can be purchased for the MacBook Air, 13/15 in MacBook Pro, or 12.9″ iPad Pro. Let’s take a look!Note: Images can be clicked on to view a larger size.
The Slim Leather sleeve is a beautiful and sleek laptop case.  The sleeve I was sent is made with supple genuine leather in a tan color. The dimensions from the website for the 13″ Slim Leather Sleeve & iPad Pro is 13.8 in x 9.8 in x 0.4 in, and for the 15″ Slim Leather Sleeve is 15.2 in x 10.6 in x 0.4 in.

The hardware for the zipper and pull has a lovely leather tab so it’s easy to unzip the sleeve. I find it’s important to have a good zipper, especially one that doesn’t touch the notebook and leave scratches.

The corner of the sleeve is rounded so it doesn’t poke out at an odd angle when slipping into another bag or backpack. You can see the detailed stitching is really nicely done and well made. I also enjoy that it has a little bit of padding for protection, but not so much to make it bulky.

The inside of the sleeve is a really nice cotton striped pattern, that has an inside pocket that’s good for holding a phone or cards with space for some personal information in case the sleeve is lost.

The sleeve I was sent was supposed to be for my 13″ Retina MacBook Pro (2014 model) but sadly didn’t fit. I think this particular sleeve was made for the MacBook Air, but it ended up not being a problem. My mother’s 13″ Samsung Chromebook fit perfectly into it!

The Toffee slim leather sleeve is an absolute joy to hold in the hands. It’s a handsome addition to anyone with a notebook for work or if you’d like to add a bit of swankiness to your EDC (every day carry). With it’s naturally milled leather and smooth finish, I think it’ll last a very long time and will only look better with handling and age. It’s great as a gift for the upcoming holiday season; or let’s face it, a gift for yourself!

6 amazing iPhone X cases and why we love them

Your shiny new iPhone X is beautiful, but thanks to its all glass back and front construction, it’s also incredibly fragile. We’ve tested a whole slew of iPhone X cases and have put together a list of our favorite ones. All of the 6 cases listed below offer ample protection for the iPhone X, and they are compatible with wireless charging.

1. Nomad’s Rugged Case – X

Most rugged cases are protective but they tend to be downright ugly. Fortunately Nomad’s Rugged Case – X offers serious protection alongside a sophisticated leather look. The case is made of Horween leather on its back side that gets better looking as it ages, with scratches adding to its character.  Our case has been getting scuffed up yet has managed to become even more attractive! The case features a tough rubber TPE bumper and it offers 10 feet drop protection. You can pick up the Nomad Rugged Case – X for $44.99.

2. Mujjo’s Full leather wallet case

Mujjo is offering another great leather case for the iPhone X, but this one sports quite a thin profile, which is why we like it so much. The case adds minimal bulk and weight to the iPhone X, while offering substantial protection, with the case’s front side being raised enough to protect the display during a drop. The full-grain leather feels great to hold in your hand and doesn’t get greasy. The case also packs in a super slim card slot that can hold 2 to 3 cards. It also features a wide cut out at its bottom side, which helps ensure that it will be compatible with most charging docks. Mujjo’s Full leather wallet case for iPhone X retails for €41.24 and is available in a choice of 4 colors.

3. Incipio Octane

Incipio’s Octane case offers plenty of shock absorption protection in a thin profile. The case’s Flex2O TPU textured bumper is not only protective, but it makes the iPhone much easier to grip. The back side of the case is translucent enough to allow you to subtly show off the Apple logo. Incipio’s Octane case retails for an affordable $24.99 and is available in a choice of 5 colors. The Octane Lux (shown above) offers a similar design but it ups the ante with metallic accent bumpers and retails for $44.99.

4. Speck Presidio Clear + Print

Speck’s Preidio Clear is a 2 layer case that is so confident that it will protect your phone, that it offers a lifetime warranty. The case comes in a selection of translucent designs that includes bicycle prints, floral prints, and even a fun pineapple pattern. However, beware that the case is quite difficult to take off of the iPhone X. Speck’s Speck Presidio Clear + Print retails for $44.95.

5. Incipio Carnaby Folio

For those who prefer folio / wallet style cases, the Incipio Carnaby Folio is an excellent choice. The Carnaby offers a pretty slim profile with 2 slots to hold a few credit cards. It’s also able to switch into a super convenient stand mode with a horizontal or vertical position. Its grey fabric cover offers a neutral but professional look. Incipio’s Carnaby Folio retails for $49.95.

6. Incipio TheMintGardener Collection

Incipio has collaborated with Seattle-based artist, Sarah Simon for a series of three cases.  The Wild Thing Case is made of a single layer of durable TPU, with a scratch-resistant coating, so it should wear quite well. The case is quite thin, yet offers ample protection. But what we especially appreciate is that it lets you show off your iPhone X’s back side while still throwing on a touch of snazzy art. You can pick up the case for $29.99.
