The ZeroLemon Charging Station – Notable crowdfunding campaign

CROWDFUNDING NEWS – The ZeroLemon Charging Station from Lauco is a small charging station that can simultaneously charge two USB-C devices and two USB-A devices while wirelessly charging a phone that supports the Qi wireless-charging standard and an Apple Watch.  It has a 130 W for full-speed charging for all devices, 90 W for the USB-C, 12 W for USB-A, 10 W for the Qi wireless charger, and 3 W for the Apple Watch.  It comes in a nicely-packaged black box and includes a power cord and a padded bag for transporting it.

The top of the station has the Qi charger on the left and the Apple Watch charger on the right.  The front of the station has two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, and a power button.

Charging so many devices at once is bound to create some heat, so the sides and back of the station are a heatsink designed to dissipate that heat.  ZeroLemon’s goal is to keep the temperature under 105.8°F, though that sounds rather hot to me.

The top and sides of the station are covered in a black, rubbery coating that does a nice job keeping phones and watches from sliding off (as well as attracting lint and dust).

I tested ZeroLemon’s charger by simultaneously charging a brand new 2019 MacBook Pro (via USB-C), a 9.7 inch iPad and a GoPro camera (via USB-A), and an iPhone 8 (via Qi).  Though I left them all charging for 20 minutes, the charger was barely even warm to the touch.

Why do I like it?

I’m a big fan of decluttering the house.  Currently, I have separate chargers for my USB devices and my iPhone, so I like that I can combine these into one gadget.  I like the charger’s power that enables it to charge up to 6 devices at once.  I like it’s small, compact size (5.5 x 4 x 1.5 inches); it’s smaller than a paperback book.

Where can I find more info?

The ZeroLemon campaign ends on 8/29/19 they have just started their climb to the funding goal of $5,000. You can pre-order a ZeroLemon starting at $59. After the ZeroLemon campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in October 2019. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details and Lauco’s web page.

VogDUO Charger Go USB-C car charger review

VogDuo Charger Go and USB-C cable

REVIEW – We all have charging units in our cars. It’s part of the Gadgeteer Code. Some of us even have power inverters that provide AC power. With today’s larger devices, however, the trickle of power our cars provide needs to be stepped up a bit for the larger phones, tablets, laptops, action cameras, and gaming boxes we carry around. VogDUO has released their Charger Go to meet this need. I was sent a test unit and have been using it for a few weeks and am ready to report.

What is it?

Power adapter for 12 volt systems with both a USB-A and a USB-C port that provides 57 watts of power.

What’s in the box?

  • The Charger Go itself
  • USB-C cable
  • User Guide

Hardware specs

  • Power Delivery Technology
  • Future-Proof USB-C Port
  • Lowest Profile
  • Car Battery Indicator
  • Flame Retardant

Design and features

VogDUO has a lot of varied products to support your gadgets: cables, wall chargers, car chargers, travel kits, etc. The engineering in the Charger Go is a leap forward, however. Not only will it intelligently deliver the correct power for your USB-A devices, but it will (at the same time!) deliver power through the USB-C port to your Switch, iPad, GoPro, or even your USB-C-powered MacBook! While I don’t have a recent MacBook to substantiate that last claim, I can say that the power delivered through the USB-C port will charge your devices faster than other car chargers. I’ve been using it in my car, and have been pleased with the rate that it charges whatever device I throw at it. My power banks (which can take a long time to top up) seem to go from flat to full in no time. My iPhone (8 Plus) gets charged from low to mid-range almost instantly. (I’m running the iOS 13 public beta, so there are some battery-draining things happening on my devices right now!)

When you first take it out of the minimal packaging, you can tell it’s a quality piece. It passes the Gadgeteer “creak” test with flying colors, and the tip is a nice solid piece of metal, rather than a thin punched-out cap.

Another feature of the Charger Go is the profile. I’m not one to be precious about how my car interior looks (it’s a Corolla, mind you!), but the slim device is a lot less chunky than the usual plugs I’ve used. And the fact that it’s made from flame-retardant material makes me rest a little easier, knowing that there’s a lot of electrical witchcraft happening inside.

On one of our recent trips, we rented a car with an infotainment system that warned about leaving navigation or CarPlay on while using battery power and I thought this was an interesting addition. But it was just a simple, “Hey, dummy, you’ve not turned off the accessory power”, not a smart sensor that let you know that the battery was actually getting discharged. The Charger Go has this sensor. If it’s not getting full power from your vehicle’s electrical system, there’s a warning LED that indicates this. Nice touch.

What I like

  • USB-C!
  • Very slim unit
  • Car battery discharge warning
  • Flame retardant material

What I’d change

  • Can’t think of a thing

Final thoughts

A car USB charger is nothing new. One with two ports is a little more unique, but still, there are dozens on the market. If you want USB-C as well as the old-school USB-A, you’re going to be hard-pressed to find a good half-dozen. And I know of none that offer Power Delivery besides the VogDUO Charger Go. Plus, the sleek unit has lights for power and a warning LED for your car’s battery. Not a bad package for $50.

Price: regularly $49.99, currently on sale for $39.99

Evo Global Travel Adapter review

REVIEW – I travel for work fairly often, and typically outside the US 2 or 3 times per year, and for those trips, it’s essential to carry electrical gadgets that can be used with the electrical outlets in countries.  I typically carry a fairly standard travel adapter for my laptop, but when I want to charge my iPhone or another device, I often need a second (or third) travel adapter to charge that device and others, which just adds to the growing amount of gear that I find myself having to carry for travel.  The Evo Global Travel Adapter presents a solution to the problem of needing multiple adapters while traveling in other countries.  Let’s check it out. Gadget on!

What is it?

The Evo Global Travel Adapter is a double USB charger that can be used with the electrical outlets in multiple countries.

What’s in the box?

  • Evo Global Travel Adapter
  • Spec/instruction sheet

Hardware specs

  • Dimensions: 0.8 x 1.2 x 2.7 in (20.3 x 30.5 x 69 mm)
  • Weight: 1.76 oz (50 g)
  • Input: 100-240VAC (90-260VAC max)
  • Output: 5V 2.1A (total 2.4A max)
  • Max Power: 12 W
  • Material: PC94V0 with fire-, overheat- and cold-resistance
  • Supported countries: 150

Design, setup, features, and performance

The Evo Global Travel Adapter began as a successful Indigogo campaign and is now available for sale on Amazon.

My initial impressions of the Evo were somewhat mixed.  First, I marveled at how small it was.  Second, I realized that it was not a standard travel adapter, but only a USB adapter.  This took me by surprise because I had been expecting to be able to plug my laptop into it like other travel adapters, but this is not the case.  Once I got past that initial disappointment, I shifted my evaluation to judge the Evo on its actual merits.

As mentioned above, the Evo is quite small; it is about the size of two iPhone charging blocks stacked atop one another.  This helps makes it a great travel companion because its small size and relatively light weight help cut down on the amount of space required to carry it as well as adding less to your overall carrying load.

The Evo’s shape is roughly rectangular in two dimensions, and it is quite slim.  It has two USB ports situated on one side and two buttons that slide in tracks on opposite sides.  There is also a small removable component that fits into the middle that remains tucked away when not in use.

As mentioned above, the two sets of prongs are actuated via sliding motion outward from the main body of the Evo, and a small button on either side must be depressed to unlock them, as shown in the photos above.  Press down, slide out the prongs and they click into place once fully extended.  Each button must be pressed again to unlock the prongs for retraction back into the body.

The above series of photos shows the appearance of each set of prongs once full in place and locked out.  The photo on the far right also shows the Evo with its additional side component attached (more on this below).

The Evo has a small additional component that is stored in its middle and remains tucked away and locked in place until needed.  It is essentially deployable length of plastic that acts as a dummy prong for outlets in which a third prong ground is typically needed, such as in the UK.

The series of photos above illustrate the progression of the deployment of the side prong from its storage location.  If you can get a fingernail under the prong’s edge, you can begin to lift it, then a small, spring-loaded side piece must be depressed in order to release the prong from its storage location.

Additionally, the Evo’s sliding metal prongs can be rotated into an angled orientation for compatibility with outlets in countries such as Australia.

Since I did not have any imminent travel outside the US when I received the Evo to review, I did a bit of experimenting with it.  In the photo above, I’ve set its prong configuration to be compatible with North American, two-prong outlets.  In this case, it was functioning like any standard double USB charger.  It was able to charge both my wife’s iPhone X and my old iPhone 6 Plus simultaneously, as well as my wife’s iPad Air and my old iPhone 6 plus.  This was expected considering Evo’s output rating of V 2.1A  individually and a 2.4A max total but this exercise confirmed that at a minimum it could charge a higher-current iPad and lower-current iPhone in parallel.

Next, I placed one of my typical travel adapters in my outlet set for standard US flat two-prong configuration.  I then set up both the Evo’s sliding and deployable ground prong configuration as if I were traveling in the UK, and plugged it into the UK outlet holes in my typical travel adapter.  The idea here was to simulate usage in the UK.  While I realize that the voltage is different in the UK, what I really wanted to test was the physical prong configuration of the Evo and determine if it would chare devices if using the UK prong setup.

As shown above, the Evo was able to charge both my wife’s iPad Air and my old iPhone 6 Plus.  I expect that at some point, I will take another trip outside the US to a country that uses a different outlet setup and perform a full test, but for now, this was the best I could do.

What I like

  • Small, compact, lightweight
  • Can charge up to two devices (including tablets) simultaneously
  • Prong configuration should be able to be used in many countries

What I’d change

  • Add the capability of being a typical travel adapter (allowing items like laptops to be plugged into it) in addition to being a double USB adapter, but keep its small size

Final thoughts

Firstly, the Evo Global Travel Adapter is not a travel adapter in the typical sense in that only USB cables can be plugged into it.  That said, Evo can charge up to two devices at a time (including tablets),  is very compact and lightweight, and would work well as not only an adapter for USB items while traveling outside the US, but also could be domestically as a double USB adapter in its own right.

UGREEN Apple Watch Charger Review

REVIEW – I have a lot of phone chargers, but I only have one charger for my wife’s Apple Watch. When I saw this item I knew I needed it to go in our travel bag!

What is it?

The UGREEN Charger for Apple Watch is a portable charger designed specifically for the Apple Watch.

What’s in the box?

  • Charger
  • Anti-Slip Band

Hardware specs

  • USB Charging
  • MFi certified

Design and features

Have you ever gone on a trip and forgot your device charger? I have, and that’s why I now have dedicated phone chargers that always stay in my travel bags. However, on a recent trip, we realized that we didn’t have one for my wife’s Apple Watch.

Not long after that, the UGREEN Charger for Apple Watch review came along and I scooped it up to put in our travel bag.

The UGREEN Charger for Apple Watch is pretty simple. It has a USB plug on one end, and the magnetic surface for the watch to charge on. The USB plug can be plugged into just about any USB port just as it is, or used with a USB extension cord (not included).

The charger also features a silicone anti-slip band that has a little shelf-like area that keeps the watch from slipping off if it’s used in a vertical position, which may come in handy in hotels that have USB ports in the lamps next to the bed.

Offering fast original charging speed, the UGREEN Charger only takes 2 hours to fully charge your watch. It’s compatible with all sizes of Apple Watch series 1 through 4.

One of the things I really like is the ability to use this charger with a power bank without extra cables. It also features a lanyard that allows you to clip or tie it to your travel bag, key chain, or purse. I also like that it has a little cover for the USB plug end to keep the plug free of dust and debris while in your pocket or travel bag.

What I like

  • Anti-Slip band for vertical use
  • Works just as it should

What I’d change

  • Nothing I can think of

Final thoughts

Whether you’re using this as a secondary charger around the house or as a travel charger, it simply works just as well as the original Apple charger. With no cords to tangle, charging your watch on the go is simply as easy as it gets. It’s definitely refreshing to get a product that does exactly what it should and does it well.
