Zendure SuperTank Portable Charger review

REVIEW – It’s a problem all gadget-loving folk deal with, the more gadgets you have, the more power you need. The solution, of course, is to buy yet another gadget, one that can supply power to all of those hungry devices, large and small. But, portable power supplies by their nature are quite limiting. The Zendure SuperTank may just be the holy grail of portable power. This aptly named tank of a battery pack can crank out over 100 watts of power, enough to feed four devices simultaneously, including USB-C powered laptops. The design, capacity, and various power modes, which include a low power option as well as a UPS pass-through, make this device a great buy at $179.99.

What is it?

The Zendure SuperTank is a very large, 27,000mAh external battery pack that can deliver over 100 watts of power to four devices simultaneously.

The SuperTank arrives in a sturdy white box, snugly set inside along with a Zendure 5A/100W SuperCord and a somewhat useless instruction manual.

  • Zendure SuperTank
  • Zendure 5A/100W USB-C to USB-C SuperCord
  • Instruction Manual

    • USB-A (2) 5V/3A, 15W (ZEN+)
    • Total DC Output: 138W Max
  • Warranty: 2 Years

Design and features

The SuperTank feels heavy and sturdy when being handled despite being constructed of relatively cheap composite plastic. The ports are clearly labeled and the LED display is clear and easy to read.

There are four ports on the SuperTank: a 15W USB-A, an 18W USB-A, a 60W USB-C, and a 100W USB-C that functions as both a power output and input port.

The maximum output of the SuperTank is listed as 138W.

On top of the SuperTank is the device’s only button. This power button turns on the SuperTank and also activates the different battery power modes.

The back of the SuperTank details all of its important technical specifications. The large 27,000mAh capacity of the SuperTank is deliberate in that this is the maximum airline safe battery capacity approved by TSA/EASA for air travel.

The SuperTank comes with a USB-C to USB-C Zendure SuperCord.

The power rating of the SuperCord is 5A / 100W for proper charging of the SuperTank as well as most laptops that charge via USB-C.

The SuperCord is extremely durable because it’s wrapped in Nylon and reinforced with Kevlar woven in a chevron pattern, surrounding a Kevlar fiber core.

The SuperCord is complimented nicely by a brown leather strap with a small metal clasp.

Setup

The Zendure SuperTank needs to be fully charged before using it for the first time. Depressing the SuperTank’s sole button will activate the battery and display its current charge level. In order to charge the SuperTank properly, you need a power supply that can deliver at least 5W of power over the included Zendure SuperCord. It’s incredible to me that a device that costs as much as the SuperTank does not come with an appropriate USB power block for charging.

After several unsuccessful attempts at charging the SuperTank where the display would either display nothing or a code of 188, I was finally able to get the SuperTank to take the charge. It did take over 18 hours for the device to charge from 0-100. During charging, the LED screen will flash and display the charging power level.

Performance

The SuperTank performed very well in all of my testing, flawlessly charging every device I could connect to it.

The SuperTank has a low power mode for charging low-consumption devices like wearables that sometimes draw less current than is necessary to keep some portable chargers from automatically shutting off. This mode is called X-Charge and it is engaged by double-pressing the power button. The SuperTank will enter X-Charge mode and display the “X” icon. Double-pressing again will turn off X-Charge mode.

The SuperTank also comes with a power delivery direction switch feature. By giving the power button a long 3 second press, you’ll switch the direction of SuperTank’s power flow to ensure that a connected laptop is being charged instead of the laptop charging the SuperTank. You can allow the laptop to charge SuperTank by long-pressing the power button again.

What I like

  • Simultaneously charging several devices at once is super useful
  • UPS and pass-through modes add greatly to device’s functionality
  • Low power mode for charging wearables

What I’d change

  • Requires a powerful power block to charge properly
    • Does not come with a power block for charging
    • Takes very long to fully charge
  • Instructions are vague and don’t fully explain features

Final thoughts

The Zendure SuperTank is a well designed, powerful, highly functional portable power supply that is useful in many ways. From simply charging all of your devices at once while on the go, to working as a quasi-UPS system, the SuperTank can do it all. The manual could be a bit more detailed and it would be great if the SuperTank came with a proper power block, but for $179.99 the SuperTank is a great deal.

Mophie Powerstation Hub Portable Battery review

REVIEW – By now, those of you that regularly read my reviews can likely conclude that I am a USB power hub gadget junkie!! :-). I use numerous devices that can either run off of a USB power pack and/or can be recharged via the same. Since I shoot many photography gigs at various locations, I always carry several accessories including my iPad, etc, that depending on the length of the shoot, need “juice” at some point. The Mophie Powerstation Hub Portable Battery looks like another nice addition to my growing USB power pack arsenal. Let’s see if it ends up in the “HOT” or “NOT” pile.

What is it

The Mophie Power Station Hub is a portable hub with built-in battery and Qi-enabled wireless charging that features multiple fast charging options and includes a USB-C Power Delivery port.

What’s in the box

1 x Mophie Powerstation Hub
1 x User Guide

Design and features

Specifications
Battery capacity: 6,000mAh
Compatibility: Qi-enabled devices
Dimensions: 3.31 x 3.31 x 1.16 in (84 x 84 x 29.5mm)
Weight: 9 oz (255.15g)

Features
Fast Charge USB-C PD: Use the USB-C PD port to recharge the Power Station Hub or use that same port to charge a device at the fastest speed possible.
AC Power Prongs: No cable needed to charge the Power Station. With the built-in AC power prongs, you can recharge it by plugging into any wall outlet.
Wireless Charging: Simply place you QI-enabled smartphone on the Power Station Hub’s charging surface and push the button to power to your device.
Charge Multiple Devices: Conveniently charge multiple devices simultaneously with the two USB-A ports, USB-C PD port, and wireless charging surface.
Compact and Portable Design: The ultra-portable design allows the Power Station Hub to fit easily in your bag so it can charge your devices anywhere.
Check Your Status and Save Battery: Turn the Power Station on and off with the LED Status Indicator button or press it to display its battery levels or charge status.

As shown below, on one side of the hub there is the power on/off button, four LED charging status lights that show the level of charge at 25% per LED, 2 USB A ports and 1 USB-C port.

The hub has a foldable 2-prong AC plug built into the device.

On one flat side of the hub, there is the Mophie brand name engraved. This is the Qi wireless charging side.

Performance

The Mophie is very easy to use right out of the box. For most situations, the foldable built-in AC plug adds ease to the use. I say for most situations because, in a tight space such as on a power strip with other devices plugged in, space becomes an issue. As shown below, it just about takes over 3 outlets on that power strip and while it can be reversed to face the opposite direction, it then became an issue with the on/off power switch for the strip that I was using.

When the hub is on, there is a LED status light at the top that indicates the wireless charging status. See the photo and illustration below.

Qi wireless charging

What I like

  • The compact size
  • The built-in folding AC plug
  • The charging options including the Qi wireless charging option

What I’d change

  • Increase the capacity of the built-in battery
  • Include a USB-c to USB-C cable

Final thoughts

The Mophie Power Station Hub is a handy device to add to your EDC gear bag. It is not too heavy and offers the convenience of charging via USB including USB-C Power Delivery fast charging. It also offers quick charging via USB cable and Qi wireless charging. The fact that the AC plug is built-in means that there is no additional power supply and cable to carry with you to recharge the device. It would be nice if the internal battery was a higher capacity battery,  but I am guessing that there may be some trade-off in regards to weight. While this is a nice device, it is up to the consumer to be satisfied with the cost to feature ratio.

Totallee takes a break from smartphone cases with their new wireless charging pad

NEWS – It seems like everyone makes a wireless charger nowadays. Totallee known for its ultra-thin smartphone cases is the latest to dip their toe into the wireless charger pool. I have one of their ultra-thin cases on my iPhone Max XS, and I love it.

Much like their cases, the wireless charging pad is a minimalistic design that is almost Impossibly thin (.25″). The pad is square with rounded corners. The modern design is kind of cool in its simplicity.

It offers fast charging with speeds up to 10W, although the 10W speed is only applicable if you have a Samsung device. If you own an iPhone the max charging speed is 7.5W. The pad does require a QC 2.0/3.0 adaptor for fast charging (not included).

The charger also features an LED indicator light, overheating protection and foreign object detection. And of course, it’s compatible with all of Totallee’s cases.

The Totallee wireless charging pad is available for pre-order on their site for $49, with a shipping date of 9/4.

Brightech Maxwell Floor Lamp with Wireless Charging Pad review

REVIEW – When our family first started buying mobile devices several years ago, I purchased an Anker USB charging hub and put it on our pie safe.  This created one central location in the house where everyone could put their gadgets for high-speed charging.  These days, however, it seems that we always want to keep our devices handy. We have this compulsion to respond quickly to text messages, check the weather, or play music via a Bluetooth speaker. Whether or not such dependency upon our gadgets is a good thing I’ll leave for you to decide, but it certainly leaves us wanting to have more than one charger in the house and even to have more than one type of charger, as our tablets still require a USB cable but our phones support the Qi wireless charging standard.  I could purchase a handful of charging stations and scatter them around the house, but it would be nice to have a solution that fits more naturally into our living spaces.  This is where Brightech comes in.  As the name of this company suggests, many of their products integrate charging technologies into light fixtures.  This is an elegant way to solve my problem, so I’m hoping that the Brightech Maxwell floor lamp will fit nicely into our living room.

What is it?

The Brightech Maxwell (Wireless Charging Edition) is a floor lamp that has three shelves, one of which has a power outlet, a USB port, and a Qi wireless charger.  It’s designed for the living room, and I think it would probably work best next to a couch or a chair, thus providing easy access to devices being charged.

What’s in the box?

The Maxwell comes with:

  • All the parts necessary to assemble the floor lamp (shelves, poles, sundry hardware, and a light socket with cord)
  • A light bulb
  • A rectangular, off-white lamp shade
  • A manual with 3 pages of assembly instructions, a customer care card, and a giveaway card

You’ll need to have a large Phillips screwdriver and a rubber mallet to assemble the lamp, as these tools are not included.  (A regular hammer will work in a pinch, though it might crack the plastic pieces, if you’re not careful.)

Hardware specs

  • 1 LED lightbulb, 9.5 watts at 800 lumens
  • 1 Qi wireless charger
  • 1 USB port (the website says there are 2 ports, but there’s only 1)
  • 1 US electrical outlet
  • Weight:  13 pounds
  • Height:  63 inches
  • Shelves:  10.25 x 10.25 inches

Design and features

Brightech describes the Maxwell lamp as both Asian and modern.  When we lived in Thailand, we saw a lot of rectangular lamp shades, though often with images.  When a shade like this is combined with the austere style and black color of our lamp then a fusion of Asian and modern is a pretty good summary of its style.

Installation and setup

I hope you’re comfortable with the phrase “some assembly required,” because that’s a requirement for this gadget.  One evening after dinner, my wife and I set out to assemble the floor lamp.  The manual walked us through the process using a combination of pictures and textual instructions.  For the most part, it was well-written.  There were a couple places that were slightly confusing, but as this lamp is reasonably straightforward to assemble, we were able to figure it out without any snafus.

We started with the base and connected the poles with screws.  It uses a set of interesting two-sided screws that connect the poles under each shelf with the corresponding poles over it.  This is a nice solution for keeping everything together nice and tight.

The lamp quickly grew until it was too large to assemble on the table, so we moved it down to the floor. There are three shelves:  the base shelf, the middle shelf, and the charging shelf.  Two power cords are built into the back of the charging shelf; one goes down and plugs into the wall, and the other goes up and connects to the lamp.

The socket is held firmly in place with a wingnut, and a small chain hangs down under it and turns the light on and off.  There also four holes in the board that holds the socket, allowing some light to shine done onto the charging shelf below, a nice touch.

Once we added the final piece to the top, we opened up the lamp shade and slid it down into its spot. The somewhat rigid material feels very similar to a standard lampshade.  Four plastic fasteners keep it from moving around.   The final step was to attach the four plastic clips used to hold the cord against the poles, thus keeping it out of sight.

It took us about 30 minutes to assemble the Maxwell.

Performance

The charging shelf has a Qi wireless charger built into it.  When an Qi-enabled phone is set on the shelf, it begins charging, and it works just as expected.  There’s a small LED between the plug and the USB port that is normally red but turns green when a phone is charging.  I’m not a big fan of the LED; it doesn’t really fit into the soft ambiance of our living room, but it is handy to know at a glance when my phone is being charged.

There is also a USB port for charging other gadgets, and you’ll need to supply your own cable for this. When charging my tablet, I can prop it up using the built-in stand, thus keeping the shelf free for charging a phone. This is a nice little addition to keep things neat.

The included lightbulb is a warm white LED that uses only 9.5w.  It’s bright enough to read by, though not so bright as to blind everyone in the room.  The top of the lamp shade is open, making it easy to change bulbs.

Location

Once the lamp was assembled, we needed to find a home for it.  For our family, we decided that the best location would probably be in our living room, so we removed the end table and lamp beside our sofa and put the Maxwell in its place.  The first thing that we noticed was that it was a bit wobbly on the carpet due to the small base.  Most new homes these days in our part of the country are built with hardwood floors in the living room, so this won’t be an issue for everyone.  Although the lamp looks great here, it didn’t really function too well for us.  Unlike the end table, the charging shelf is too high above the couch arm and felt awkward, plus it was not quite steady enough to safely hold a glass of ice tea while watching TV.  (As an alternative, it’s worth noting that Brightech makes the Madison, which is an end table with a built-in wireless charger; that probably would have worked better here.)

We decided to try the spot beside our recliner, and we’re much happier with it here. It fits nicely into the niche between the recliner and the fireplace, provides light for reading, and it’s perfect for charging a phone.

I think the lamp could also work well in a study or den and maybe even in a master bedroom if there’s a chair to put it by.

Materials

Brightech’s website says that the Maxwell is a “floor lamp in an all-wood frame.”  I was immensely disappointed when I opened the box and found that this lamp is not made of solid wood but of MDF.  If you’re not familiar with MDF, it’s basically sawdust mixed with resin and wax and compressed with heat and high pressure.  It’s a manufactured product, and while it’s made from wood byproducts, it’s not wood.  It’s neither as durable nor as strong as real wood, and it completely lacks its warmth and beauty.  To hide the MDF, Brightech covers the poles and shelves of the Maxwell with a plastic veneer that has a wood-like pattern.  The only advantage of MDF is that it’s less expensive than real wood.  I hope that Brightech chooses to be completely transparent and change it website to say “MDF” or “engineered wood product” instead of “all-wood.”

What I like

  • Asian, modern design
  • Wired and wireless capabilities
  • Chargers built into the lamp

What I’d change

  • Be transparent about using MDF (or use real wood)

Final thoughts

The Maxwell has found a nice home in our living room, and I’m super happy with the functionality that it provides.  I really like the way that Brightech has integrated charging capabilities into a floor lamp, and I’m hoping that this concept finds its way into other furniture in our house.  Whether or not you should consider buying the Maxwell largely depends on upon your views of wood.  If you don’t really care about wood, or if you’re looking to save some money, then you should definitely take a look at the Maxwell.  If, however, you prefer real wood furniture, then you should probably pass.

Kenu BingeBank all-in-one powerbank and wireless charger review

REVIEW – It seems that every computer or technology-based store and website is selling power banks in every shape, size, and capacity. The key to getting the best fit and right deal is the versatility of the power bank. The Kenu BingeBank is another entry into this crowded field. Let’s see how it matches up!!

What is it?

The Kenu BingeBank is a power bank that is capable of delivering 18W power to charge up to three devices at once and 10000 mAh capacity for up to 3X charges. It can also support up to approximately 30 hours of video playback.

What’s in the box

1 x Kenu BingeBank
1 x Nanosuction Adapter Shelf
1 x USB-C Charging Cable
1 x User Guide

Design and features

Specifications

Features
CHARGE UP TO 3 DEVICES AT ONCE: Three ways to charge: (1) Qi-Wireless, (2) Quick Charge 3.0 USB, (3) 18W Power Delivery USB-C input/output. Charge an iPhone 8 or later up to 50% in 30 minutes (Lightning to USB-C cable req., not incl.)
CHARGE UP TO 3X OR PLAY VIDEO 30 HRS LONGER: The 10000mAh lithium-ion external battery charger extends your smartphone viewing session with power to spare so you’ll never miss another episode.
PREMIUM DIE-CAST KICKSTAND AND MAGIC NANOSUCTION GRIP: BingeBank is the only portable power bank that combines an exclusive die-cast metal kickstand, Qi-wireless charging, and a nano suction phone grip, letting you BINGE-WATCH, VIDEO CHAT, or LIVE STREAM HANDS-FREE while you charge! CHARGE LAPTOPS: Our power pack is capable of charging a USB-C compatible MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air (USB-C to USB-C cable req., not incl.)

On the front side of the Kenu, there is the branding and the raised nanosuction phone mount Qi wireless charging pad.

On the back of the BingeBank, there is a kickstand, and above it, there are operating instructions for charging.

On one edge of the BingeBank, there are the connectivity ports. From left to right as shown below, there is the Type-C input/output 18 W Power Delivery port and the USB power output Quick Charge (QC) 2.0/3.0 port.

On the opposite edge of the power bank, there are the 4 LED charging lights, each representing 25% of the charge level and the on/off power button.

If your phone does not work with the nanosuction pad, Kenu has included a separate folding shelf.

Performance

Like any other power bank, the first thing that you do when you take it out of the box is to charge it. It is an all-black power bank with a silver kickstand, a bit smaller than the iPhone 10x Max and about twice as thick. The first feature I tried was the nanosuction charging pad. It works well even with my case on my phone, but I do wonder how long the suction will work before it no longer adheres. The wireless charging works well, and the instructions on how to just charge the phone as well as charging the phone while charging the power back work as designed. The Quick Charge (QC) function via a cable also works well and I was able to use the USB-C power delivery function to charge my iPad. No USB-C to USB-C cable is included.

As shown below, the included folding shelf allows you to use the Kenu either horizontally or vertically with or without the kickstand. My attempts to use it with my iPhone were not successful. Maybe I was doing something wrong or maybe I am confused about its use, but the folding shelf is not rigid enough or strong enough to support the phone and the Kenu without using the kickstand. Honestly, I do not really see any beneficial use for it. The kickstand that is built into the device allows it to stand in both portrait or landscape whether charging with a cable or wirelessly.

What I like

  • Build quality
  • Battery capacity
  • Kickstand
  • Suction attachment
  • Charging options including QC 3.0

What I’d change

  • Since the device offers USB-C power delivery, a USB-C to USB-C cable should be included

Final thoughts

The Kenu BingeBank is a nice affordable power bank that incorporates features that make it convenient and easy to use. The battery capacity is great and the kickstand allows me to use it at eye level while charging. I like it!!
