Give Dad a toiletry kit bag that could sail the Seven Seas

Toiletry kit bags for men are usually made of leather, but leather can be damaged by water from shaving gear that has to be packed away before it’s had time to dry or from leaking toiletries.  With the Black Carbon Fiber Toiletry Kit from RAGGEDedge Gear, water and spills won’t hurt a thing.  The bag is made of  black carbon fiber laminate sailcloth, so it will repel water and smells and is a cinch to wipe clean.

The folks at RAGGEDedge gear are competitive sailors, and they know that “laminate sailcloths are hard core materials, engineered specifically to perform in a wet environment, very efficiently turn wind into power, and maintain their integrity for the duration of their life as a sail. These materials are essentially the engine of Americas Cup boats, highly competitive one design classes, and other high end yachts.”  They knew this material would lend itself to making wallets, gear bags, and other accessories that will hold up to wear.

The bag measures 10” long x 5” tall x 4.5” wide.  It has an interior pocket to corral smaller items.  The marine-grade zipper won’t corrode, no matter how tough you are on your gear.  There’s a grab handle that can also be used to hang the bag.

The Black Carbon Fiber Toiletry Kit is $70.00 at RAGGEDedge Gear.

The New Bellroy Laptop Brief is ideal for streamlined professionals

I absolutely love what Bellroy is doing with their new lineup of bags. The Bellroy Duo Totepack that I reviewed last year is still one of my favorite bags of all time. The new laptop brief follows the same innovative design language and top-notch construction, in a slimmed-down business brief form made for your laptop and essentials.

Available in 2 sizes (for 13″ or 15″ laptops), the Laptop Brief features Bellroy’s proprietary water-resistant materials, a thoughtful combination of internal/external pocketing designed to manage all your tech and accessories, and a clamshell-style full opening to get into the depths of the bag. The contemporary look and minimalist style will pair well with any work ensemble in a lightweight package. It also includes a shoulder strap and pass-through handle to ride on your wheelie luggage in airports.

Bellroy retails the Laptop Brief for $159 (for 13 inch laptops, 8 L capacity) or $169 (for 15 inch laptops, 10 L capacity). Three colors are available. Based on my experience with the Tote Pack, I expect this one to be another winner. Check it out at the Bellroy web site.

Pop your gear into Tom Bihn’s Pop Tote

People had been requesting a zip-top tote from Tom Bihn for years, but it wasn’t until 2017 that Tom designed a bag that he felt was substantially better than other zip totes out there.  At first, you could only have a Pop Tote if you were one of the lucky folks who received a gift bag at the 2017 Kennedy Center Mark Twain Awards for Humor honoring David Letterman, but now you can order your own bag directly from Tom Bihn.

The Pop Tote, at 12.8” (w) x 11.8” (h) x 8.7″ (d), is big enough to carry your EDC kit, a small laptop or tablet, or you could even use it as a shopping bag to tote home groceries or books.  The bag is made of:

  • 525 denier 2×2 ballistic nylon for the exterior
  • PORON foam handles
  • #8 YKK zippers
  • Tough Duraflex®, Nexus, and Woojin buckles and related components

The top closes with a zipper and/or snaps.  With just the snaps closed and the zipper open (as above), you can use the Pop Tote as an open-top tote that works great as a shopping bag.  Leave the snaps open and close the zipper, and you’ve got a secure bag that protects your daily gear or your electronics.  And if you close both the zipper and the snaps, it will change the shape of the top of the bag into a pleasing rounded shape like in the top photo.  You could even carry a sweater or jacket in the curved top of the bag in this mode.

The exterior has a couple of slip-in pockets and a couple of zippered pockets on the exterior sides.  The inside is open, but both the interior and the exterior pockets have a variety of O-rings so you can clip your items into the bag.

The Pop Tote is available in deep blue (shown), olive, Mars red, cloud, black, and alphaviolet for $95.00 at Tom Bihn.

Diaper bags and baby gear for dads living in the urban jungle

When my daughter was born, I bought a bunch of Disney’s The Lion King stuff for her, including a diaper bag.  It had a leafy jungle print background and an appliqué of Simba on the front.  It was cute, and it was obviously for the baby I was toting around.  I never gave the cutesy design a second thought.  Years later, I realized, while looking for news items to write about for The Gadgeteer, that some people want plain, utilitarian bags for their kid’s stuff.  I asked my husband if that cutesy bag had bothered him, but he said he never gave it a second thought, either.  It was Rachel’s bag, and he was just carrying it for her because she was too small to carry it herself.

While searching for news items a couple years ago, I found a variety of gray or neutral bags for people who didn’t like carrying colorful baby bags, but I did notice that most of them, while plain and neutral, still looked more like a lady’s tote bag than a unisex bag.  I just found some diaper bags by a company called Tactical Baby Gear that might look more at home loaded up with gear for a military campaign than they would being loaded up with bottles and diapers for a day out with the kids.

TBG Deuce 2.0 (yeah, I noticed the name, too) Tactical Diaper Bag, as described by the creator himself, “marries a typical diaper bag with rows of MOLLE webbing. This webbing allows for complete customization, as dads can swap out tactical pouches, bottle pouches, baby blowout pouches, and the top-selling “dump pouch,” which is designed for exactly what you think.”  They have the Deuce 2.0 bag (shown above), backpacks, changing pads, baby carriers, and accessories in black, coyote brown (shown), gray, and black camouflage.  Prices start at $80.00 for the Deuce 2.0.  Learn more and purchase your gear at Tactical Baby Gear.

This wristlet’s powerbank keeps your phone charged without breaking the piggy bank

We’ve seen small handbags and purses with built-in backup batteries inside that can keep your phone charged all day.  Most of those bags seemed to start at a couple hundred dollars, but they came with a Qi charging pad to keep the purse itself recharged.  The Sak Sanibel Charging Wristlet will keep your phone charged while you’re out for the day, but you’ll need to plug it in with a charging cable at night to keep its battery pack charged.  That small inconvenience isn’t too great a price to pay to get a charging wristlet at a great price.

The battery pack will work with Android or Apple phones, though Apple users will have to buy their own short Lightning cable.  It has a 2500 mAh power reserve.  Users have specified that the bag accommodates a phone up to the size of an iPhone 7 Plus.  The Sak measures 8.3″ x 0.8″ x 5″ with a 5″ wrist strap.

The exterior has a full-width zipper pocket, and there’s an interior zipper pocket, as well.  You’ll have room for a small card wallet and keys, making the Sanibel the perfect go-to-lunch bag.

The Sanibel is made of leather with a polyester lining, and it is available in a variety of exterior finishes.  Price varies from about $30 to $90, depending on the design.  The Sak Sanibel Charging Wallet is available on Amazon.
