1. HUAWEI MateBook X Pro laptop

First of all, a laptop is mandatory and HUAWEI offers a great MacBook alternative with their 13.9-inch MateBook X Pro that is available in i5 and i7 versions and is currently $200 off from Microsoft and Amazon (until 8/14) making them a good deal for a quality laptop that includes a touchscreen.

Where to buy: Microsoft and Amazon

2. A USB powered portable monitor

If you already have your laptop or tablet for school, good for you. But the screens on those devices are never big enough when you’re trying to research topics, write papers, play games, etc. Portable monitors that use USB-C cables to connect to the laptop, tablet, or even some Android smartphones, can add useful screen real estate without being bulky. One such monitor is the ASUS MB168B 15.6″ WXGA 1366×768 monitor that works in landscape AND portrait orientations which makes it great for editing papers.

Price:$97.99
Where to buy: Amazon

3. BunkTrunk Footlocker

The BunkTrunk is a solid wood footlocker that allows college students to securely lock up their laptops and phones while also recharging them. It’s designed to be used either over the foot of the bed, which provides an extra place to study or watch movies or underneath the bed. With the BunkTrunk, you won’t have to worry that your sketchy roommate is going to “borrow” your gear without permission.

Price: $219 – $279

4. Targus CityLite Pro Compact Convertible Backpack

Every student needs some type of bag, with backpacks being the most popular and the Targus CityLite Pro Compact Convertible Backpack being ultra-affordable. The CityLite Pro easily converts from backpack to briefcase and has room to hold all of your essentials and then some while looking sleek without being too flashy.

Price: $74.99

5. Notebook / Journal / Bullet Journal

When it comes to keeping track of what I need to do, I prefer an old-school paper notebook and my own version of the bullet journal system. When it comes to notebooks, the Leuchtturm 1917 is my favorite choice for a few reasons. First, the notebook lays flat when opened and it stays open. I also like that the pages are pre-numbered and that the notebook is available in different colors and with dotted or grid paper style in addition to lined and blank.

Price: $19.95
Where to buy: Amazon

6. Pad & Quill Deluxe Leather Journal Cover

If you have #5 on the list, you might want to consider a cover to protect your notebook. There are a million different covers to choose from like this one from Pad & Quill. It’s designed for A5 sized notebooks like the Leuchtturm 1917 and is made of leather which only gets better with age and adventure.

Price: $49.95 – $69.95
Where to buy: Pad & Quill

7. Activity tracking fitness watch or smartwatch

You’ve probably heard of the freshman 15 which is a phenomenon where new freshmen gain weight their first year of college due to freedom to eat when and whenever they please when they go off to school. If you’re going to be a freshman, make sure you stay active to burn off those extra calories by getting a fitness watch or even a smartwatch if your budget allows.

Most of these wearable devices can track your heart rate, sleep, daily steps, runs, and other workouts while also (depending on the watch) show your text messages, incoming calls, streaming music, and more.

Price: Varies depending on the watch
Where to buy: Withings, Huawei, Casio

So KontrolFreek sent me a Mystery Box…

ARTICLE – Oh! What’s this? A cool little mystery box from our friends at KontrolFreek! Let’s take a peek inside and see what’s in store.

First, a greeting…

The first thing I came across was a lovely handwritten note:

Hi Jacob,

After a decade of making performance gaming gear, KontrolFreek has had many faces. The purpose of this box is to tell KontrolFreek’s story; past, present, and future. How each of these items fit that story is completely up to your interpretation.

The only thing you need to know is that as a performance gaming gear brand, we’re just getting started.

Happy interpreting,
Maron Moreau

PS. Give PolyOne some heat.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Thumb Sticks + Thumb “Wings”

I quite liked KontrolFreek’s thumbsticks when I reviewed them, and these look to be another pair of those, plus something else that I haven’t seen before. They look like a little “wing” grips that sort of cradle your thumb, rather than act as an extender, they keep your thumb from slipping off the edge of the stick. Personally, that’s something that happens a lot during those crazy quick-time events during cut scenes, like, “wiggle your thumb to escape something that’s biting at your face.”

Attached to the PS4 controller.

Black Cap

Some straight-up company swag, featuring the KontrolFreek icon itself. I like to think of that little guy as the Freek, with its gamepad/shaded face and cool, stoic demeanor. Unflappable. Ready for another round.

Performance Grips

Ah, another of their core products, Performance Controller Grips. The PS4’s DualShock 4 controllers aren’t exactly grippy. Their smooth plastic has a nice feel, but they become slippery with just a little bit of hand sweat. My hands get clammy when I’m playing for a while, or when I’m in the middle of a rare kill streak (because let’s face it, I’m traaaaash at multiplayer, but I still love it.) I’ll be happy to give these a try to see if it helps with my sweaty mitts.

PolyOne Thumbsticks

Interesting, another little handwritten note: “One of a kind.” And a small sample sheet of PolyOne thermoplastic. The material sheet feels very cool to the touch. If my guess is right, these orange mystery bits are a prototype of highly heat-resistant thumbsticks. The material is very grippy, and they fit the PS4 controller perfectly. I like the feel of that spiral pattern, they look a lot like the company’s Vortex thumbsticks. Interesting.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Performance Thumbsticks

Here’s another pair of high-rise thumbsticks, one of several branded items that KontrolFreek offers. It shows a commitment to offering products branded with popular franchises, and I imagine that will only expand. I think these will become another favorite of mine, the tops of the sticks seem very concave and grippy.

I noticed the A.D.S. acronym on the package (which stands for Aim Down Sights) and that’s a neat little addition that goes along with their brand … meaning that when you’re aiming down your sights in a shooter, you’re in control of your shots, just like using these thumbsticks helps you control your aim.

FPSFreek Epic

Here is another set of high-rise thumbsticks bearing a skull design reminiscent of the Gears of War series — that fact driven home by naming the product Epic, who developed the Gears series. These offer a concave design, but the material feels a little smoother compared to the Modern Warfare thumbsticks.

The Story

Even though I’m not extremely familiar with KontrolFreek’s history, the contents of this box feel like a virtual timeline of their products. From the thumb-wing / thumbstick combo pack, which feels like the company’s first offerings, to the officially licensed CoD:MW thumbsticks that feel custom-tuned for that style game, to the PolyOne prototype material. Past. Present. And a promise of things to come.

Each of the items in the Mystery Box felt … genuine. You know how you can sort of just tell when a company is trying to cash in on a trend? That sort of mentality is rampant these days, and feels almost like predatory marketing. Like, hey, kids these days like this Fortnite game, let’s make a Fortnite flavored thing. But these guys “get it,” making products that make sense for that type of game … making a high-rise thumbstick for quick building and easy aiming that also matches the colorful aesthetic of the graphics.

It feels like they understand what would work best rather than rushing something out the door that people might buy but ultimately be disappointed in. I appreciate that.

I’d like to thank KontrolFreek for their generosity and can’t wait to see what they come out with next.

How to listen to audiobooks and read eBooks for FREE

ARTICLE – Last year we remodeled our main bathroom and I ordered a white Amazon Echo Dot and a special outlet wall mount holder so the install would be neat and the Echo wouldn’t need any counter space.

Every morning before I hop in the shower, I’ll say “Alexa, play some music” and she’ll start playing some of my favorite songs that help me wake up. But one morning a couple of weeks ago, I heard myself saying “Alexa, read me a story”. I don’t really know why I even asked that because I’d never issued that command before, but I’m so glad that I did because it’s ignited a new thirst for reading (and listening) to books that I’ve not had in a long time.

See, I love to read but I never seem to have enough time to devote to it. It can sometimes take me a month to get through a book because I only read a couple of pages here and a couple of pages there. I rarely sit down and devote an entire hour or more just for reading.

But from the moment Alexa started the audiobook AWOL on the Appalachian Trail by David Miller, I was hooked on audiobooks. Instead of listening to the radio or Spotify on my 20-minute drives to and from work, I listened to the book. I found myself looking forward to getting up in the mornings just so I could get in another 10-minute listening session in the shower followed up by a 20-minute session on the way into work and then another on the way home.

I finished AWOL on the Appalachian Trail this weekend (great read/listen if you enjoy hiking stories like I do) and asked Alexa to read me a new book when I hopped in the shower on Sunday. I was confused when the same book started over and I later found that my Amazon Prime membership must not cover audiobooks like I thought it might. Instead, I think I just got a one-time freebie and was prompted to sign up for a 30-day trial or a full subscription. I don’t need an extra $14.95 a month bill that only gives you 3 books a month, so I went searching for alternatives.

I ended up finding that there are some free audiobooks from Amazon if you have a Prime account, but they are not easy to find (thanks a lot Amazon) and they aren’t new releases or best sellers. I was just about to give up when I found OverDrive and Libby.

OverDrive and Libby are pretty much the same thing. Libby is just an updated version of the OverDrive app for Android and iOS devices that lets you read and listen to audiobooks and read eBooks for FREE. Completely, FREE and no trials, or paid subscription. Just install the app and read or listen… Well, there is one caveat. You will need a library card for your local library to get all these glorious freebies.

Lucky for me, I have a card from my local library which was also free. The Libby app asks you for your library’s name and your account number (on the library card) and voila, you now have access to digital versions and audio versions of your favorite books.

The Libby interface allows you to search on books by title and you can also search for books that are available to borrow immediately. Remember, it’s a library, so some titles may already be checked out, so you’ll have to “get in line” and put checked out titles on hold so you’ll get them when they become available.

I’m not sure if the borrowing period is the same for every library, but for mine, the audiobooks can be checked out for 12 days and the ebooks can be checked out for 21 days. I do not know (yet), if you can renew if the time expires before you’re finished. I also don’t know if the limit of 10 books is per my library or all libraries.

If you like, you can send your checked out books to the Kindle app on your device or you can read them directly through the Libby app. For audiobooks, you listen through the Libby app. The app’s interface is easy to navigate and there are some customization options like changing the playback speed for audiobooks and changing the font, text size, and color.

The built-in Libby eBook reader will also let you click to see a definition of a word and search on words as well as set bookmarks.

To say that I’m excited to have found the free Libby app/service is an understatement. I might have to wait a few days for a new book to become available, but it’s free and there are so many titles to choose from that it’s really a non-issue. Yay for libraries!!!

Another tip for readers is to check out Goodreads.com. It’s a site where you can keep track of all the books you’ve read and books that you want to read. The site also provides ideas for new books to read based on your read books or books in your want to read list.

Here’s a question for all of you. Do you think that listening to an audiobook should count as “reading” the book? I feel like it’s just another way to digest the info and see no reason why listening and reading can’t be considered the same thing.

6 Gadgets that will take your workspace into the future

ARTICLE – Modern technology is creeping into so many areas of our lives that it makes sense we’d start to see it on the professional level. The enterprise world has always run on certain kinds of technology, but we’re talking strictly about innovative gadgets — many you might see in the IoT or smart market.

You’ve probably heard that the future of modern living lies with the smart home. Well, the same is true of the business world. The technologies and solutions used inside these spaces will significantly improve convenience and productivity, as well as sync up various functions and activities.

Here are six gadgets that will transform your workspace into a more futuristic environment.

1. Interactive Whiteboards

Image via Samsung

There are few things more valuable in a collaborative space or conference room than the whiteboard. For years, these tools were nothing more than low-tech analog boards that you draw or write on using conventional markers. That’s no longer the case.

Electronic or digital whiteboards work similarly to a touch-screen tablet. They can record, store and print all content written or drawn on their surface. Not only does this help save time during work sessions, but it also improves collaboration for everyone that has access to the board. Notes can be added, and the final mockup can be sent to everyone on the team via email or internal applications.

These high-tech whiteboards can interface with mobile devices, allow for real-time adjustments and modifications, display presentations and allow multiple users to interact or add content simultaneously.

Check out GoTouch on Amazon.

2. 3D Printing

Image via XYZprinting

Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, creates several unprecedented opportunities. Prototypes and conceptual designs can be realized quickly, accurately and on-site. There’s no need to send plans to a manufacturer and wait until it produces a limited run. It can all be handled in-house using a relatively inexpensive printer.

3D printers also allow resourceful engineers to create a vast array of goods, items and devices. A printer can be used to create any type of tool, object or gadget you might need at work.

Plus, any office filled with 3D printed goods is going to look futuristic anyway.

Check out some of our 3D printer reviews!

3. Modular Office Pods

Image via SnapCab

Cubicles suck, and that’s something pretty much everyone can agree on. They do serve a crucial purpose, though — especially in large corporate office spaces. They give each worker a personal environment to work in, separating them from the rest of their department or team.

A lot of offices have moved away from large, cubicle-filled spaces and instead opt for more open and social areas. When you do need that personal and quiet space to get some work done, queue the SnapCab pods or modular office pods. They are cozy workspaces that personnel can enter alone — or with a small crew — to work in peace. It’s a place to go when you don’t want to be in the open or social.

Their modular nature means they’re easy to install and can be connected with other pods and similar modular walls or surfaces. Another would be the SnapCab Portal, which introduces intelligent and integrated multimedia walls.

4. VR and AR

Image via IKEA

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) solutions will truly digitize and transform the average in-office experience.

By using VR, workers can immerse themselves in an entirely digital space or environment. Imagine transporting to an isolated beach to get some work done, or demoing a potential prototype in a realistic, bustling world?

AR, on the other hand, involves projecting digital content or experiences in the real world. “Pokemon Go” is an obvious example, but IKEA’s Place app is another. AR will allow workers to project information in front of them as they work or alter the way they interact with their surroundings — like displaying indicators or notifications on real-world surfaces.

5. IoT and IIoT

Image via Philips

Just as homes are being made smarter through IoT integration, so are office spaces and corporate campuses. The technology is incredibly broad but collectively syncs up all functions, devices and systems to create a more intelligent, automated and convenient environment. Even something as simple as the office coffee maker can be engaged from a mobile device remotely.

During meetings, your smartphone might record important notes and schedule reminders and appointments automatically. A real-time location system can tell you when a co-worker you need to talk to enters the office or when they have free time. Another one can turn on lights when you walk into a room and off again — with no input from you.

6. AI Voice Assistants

Image via JLL

Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant are all voice-enabled AI assistants that can take commands and complete various actions. You can tell Siri and Alexa to turn on additional smart devices in or around your home. While there are many assistants out there, many of them are designed for personal and consumer use. That’s about to change, however.

A company called JLL has created an assistant named JiLL to help out around the office. JiLL is just the first of many as the technology is adapted for work and professional use, in addition to everything else it’s capable of.

Imagine being able to arrange meetings with colleagues, schedule work-related calendar events, send emails and communications, or even submit work orders just by using your voice.

Future offices will be smart, convenient and efficient.

6 gadgets that make traveling more secure

ARTICLE – When it comes to traveling, gadgetry may not always be the first thing on your mind. But investing in the right gear could be a game-changer for certain situations. Especially when it comes to security.

Whether it’s door locks, alarms, slash-proof bags or otherwise, some simple preventative measures could make the difference between your trip being picture perfect or an embarrassing debacle. You don’t necessarily need every item in this list – take into account your individual needs and opt for what suits you the best. You may find some ideas you wouldn’t have previously considered.

Portable Door Locks

There are a number of different portable locks that can easily and temporarily enhance the security of motels, hostels or other places you may be staying at without making any alterations to the existing locking hardware.

This is a great gadget to take with you because standard commercial door locks frequently present a security hazard to businesses and their patrons due to improper installation. Most hotels and commercial properties have doors that unlock themselves if the handle is pulled from the inside of the room. But if the hardware fitment is not precise, the latch can potentially be slipped with a tool that causes the door to unlock just as if it were being opened from the inside. A trick like this can be pulled off with something as simple as a piece of plastic.

Since you can’t always predict where you’ll be staying when you travel, a portable lock is a great accessory to take with you. Look for one that doesn’t take up too much space. Just throw it in a pocket of your luggage and forget about it until needed. When you are ready to leave your room, it only takes seconds to take back off from the door.

Check out the Calslock for $19.99 on Amazon.

Anti-theft Backpack

Anyone who has had devious friends in school (or has been one of those devious friends) will know how easy it is to unzip the pockets of a backpack while someone is wearing it without them noticing. Unfortunately, this could be a serious problem for those who are traveling or frequently commute and are carrying gear like tablets, laptops or cameras.

Because backpack theft is a crime of opportunity, it is both very common and very easy to prevent. This means having the right backpack should be one of your top priorities if you plan on spending a lot of time traveling with it.

Consider looking for one that doesn’t open from the outside (instead, it has zippers on the side that is against your back) which prevents simple opportunistic thefts. You can also opt for backpacks made with materials that are hard to cut with a knife – another common way tourists and commuters end up losing their gear.

Check out the Raydem anti-theft travel backpack for $31.99 from Amazon.

Door Wedge Alarms

Door wedges can be used as an alternative or complement to portable door locks. They can be placed a few inches back from a hotel door so that they stop it from opening completely. Instead of just getting the typical plastic wedges you see propping doors open everywhere, security-focused wedges are equipped with pressure-activated alarms on the wedge so that when a door butts up against it a siren sounds that is more than loud enough to wake you up.

Wedges are a super simple item to have in your luggage that you can use any time you feel the need. Hostels are notoriously low-security environments and depending on your travel budget you may also periodically find yourself in motels, hotels, or otherwise unfamiliarly designed facilities where you aren’t quite comfortable with the surroundings. Ever booked a night at a hotel only to find the building and surrounding area look a lot worse than the pictures? That’s why you might want to have one of these on hand.

Check out the Mbangde wedge lock for $16.99 on Amazon.

Slash-proof Strap

Slash-proof straps work like a regular bag and camera straps but with the added benefit of metal cables inside that won’t be broken by blades in slash-and-run robberies. If you aren’t carrying valuables or won’t be traveling on foot much, this may not necessary. But for photographers frequently wielding high end cameras or business pros toting laptops with vital contents, this could be a worthy investment.

One of the best features of slash-proof straps is that they often are also made to be unlatchable. This means that if you find yourself setting a valuable down momentarily, you can unlatch the strap and fix it to a chair so that it isn’t as easy for it to disappear while your attention is diverted.

Check out the Travelon anti-theft travel strap for $19.41 on Amazon.

Personal Alarm

Personal alarms are a great travel security accessory that are likely to be legal in most situations you find yourself in.

Depending on the local laws in the area that you are traveling to, protecting yourself with other means may get you in hot water with the local officials quickly. While alarms cannot guarantee your safety, they are an affordable and travel-friendly precaution.

A personal alarm should be easy to activate quickly and be capable of sounding a siren loud enough that it attracts attention and potentially deters an aggressor. The downside is that if no one is willing to intervene or noise doesn’t affect the aggressor’s behavior, you’d better think of something else quick.

Check out the Sabre personal alarm for $8.36 on Amazon.

Passport Holder

RFID chips emit and receive signals that can be successfully captured at a distance and decrypted at a later time. Once decrypted, the signal can be reproduced with counterfeit chips. The complete process is sophisticated and multifaceted and thus is not common. In fact, in recent years RFID-skimming crimes have been somewhere between rare and nonexistent.

That being said, for some the trouble may be worth it and counterfeit passports are indeed a documented phenomenon. So even if the odds of a passport RFID skimmer affecting you are low, the theoretical result could be a complicated and costly identity theft situation.

Since RFID-blocking sleeves can be cheap, keep your passport nice and clean, and provide an additional, albeit potentially unnecessary layer of security, you may still want to pick one up. The best part is you can get one that straps on to your body (preferably underneath a jacket – for style purposes of course) which makes it harder to lose and more easily accessible at the airport. The last thing you want is to be digging around through your bags looking for your passport when you have a line behind you and a flight to catch ahead.

Check out the AIKELIDA RFID Blocking Passport Holder for $8.95 on Amazon.
