MEZONE TWS earbuds sound great and also charge wirelessly – Notable crowdfunding campaign

CROWDFUNDING NEWS – There have been wireless earbuds for a few years now, but the latest innovation in wireless earbuds is called TWS and it stands for True Wireless Stereo. It doesn’t just mean that there isn’t a wire between each earbud. It means that you can use either earbud or both earbuds interchangeably.

What is it?

MEZONE are earbuds that feature a Qualcomm chip with TWS+ technology, Bluetooth 5.0, touch controls, wireless charging, and they are IPX7 waterproof.

Why do I like them?

Most wireless earbuds work in a master/slave mode where one earphone is the master and the other is the slave. This means that if the master gets lost, damaged or runs out of juice, the other earbud won’t work. MEZONE earbuds aren’t like that. You can use one or both interchangeably.

MEZONE claim that the earbuds are guaranteed to never fall out or cause your ears to get sore. I was sent a pre-production sample of the MEZONE earbuds I can’t completely agree with that claim. They are relatively comfortable, but they would fall out of my ears especially if I had them in while eating. I guess moving my jaw would dislodge them. So you have to take their claim with a grain of salt.

Some of my favorite features of the MEZONE are great sound quality, the touch controls which makes it easy to control music play/pause and answer/end calls without having to press a physical button which jams the earbuds farther into your ears. Ouch. With MEZONE, you can just tap the earbud.

But my favorite feature has to be the built-in wireless charging. You can set the case on any Qi charging pad and it will charge the batteries in the case and the earbuds themselves.

The MEZONE earbuds have a single 8hr charge play time and 80hrs of playtime using the charging case. If you don’t have a Qi charger (one comes with it), you can also use a USB Type-C cable.

Where can I find more info?

The MEZONE campaign ends on 4/28/19 they launched today and have already met their funding goal of $10,000. You can pre-order a pair of MEZONE earbuds starting at $75. After the MEZONE campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in June 2019. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

xFryo Aria Bluetooth Earbuds review

Review – xFryo Aria Earbuds, “come on down!!”. You are the next contestant in the battle to determine which are the best earbuds for me. Let’s spin the Test and Review wheel and see what we land on!!

What is it?

The xFryo Aria Bluetooth Wireless Earbuds are small and lightweight and are designed for listening to music and conducting phone calls. As with most earbuds, they should be compatible with most Bluetooth equipped mobile devices.

What’s in the box

1 x xFryo Aria Earbuds
1 x Micro USB Cable
3 x Pairs of Ear Tips
2 x Pairs of Wing Tips
1 x User Guide
1 x Charging Case

Design and features

Specifications

Features

  • Universal Ergonomic Fit
  • Auto Pairing
  • Hands-Free Controls
  • Voice-Audio Sync
  • Stereo Phone Calls

There is a one-touch button on the surface of each earbud.

The charging case has the usual design of charging slots for the earbuds, which stay in place magnetically. This case has an on/off switch inside that allows you to control the earbuds charging. There are also 4 blue LEDs that indicate the level of charge.

The illustration below shows the size of the earbuds and charging case.

On the back of the charging case, there is the micro USB charging port.

Performance

After I fully charged the earbuds and I took them out of the charging case, they automatically powered on and synced with each other. They immediately showed up in the Bluetooth device list on my smartphone. Pairing was quick and easy. The specifications for these earbuds boast a long charge time, and that holds true when compared to other earbuds that I have tested. Each full charge of the earbuds lasts a bit longer than 8 hours and the charging case provides approximately 4 charges for a total of approximately 32 plus hours. This is quite impressive.

The next question that I wanted to answer was about their waterproof capabilities. This is also a big part of their promotion, and I was willing to try them and confirm for sure. As you can see below, I tried them in a nice cognac glass of water, and I can confirm that after leaving them in the water for about 10 minutes, I was able to take them out and put them right into my ears and listen to music with no issues.
As I do with all earbud testing, I listen to several genres including Contemporary Jazz, Easy Listening, The Classics, Gospel, etc., and like the previous model of xFryo earbuds that I tested, I enjoyed the sound across all of the genres. The sound is quite good and well balanced for the lows, mids, and highs. There was also no real discernable distortion in any frequency range, and like the previous model, there is a built-in volume limiter to add to the quality of the listening experience.

However, unlike the previous model, (xFryo S2), when I tested these on phone call functions the experience was not good. I could hear the other party but they said that the sound from me was muffled and very unclear. I had to raise my voice quite a bit for them to hear. It is important to note that these earbuds have a somewhat square shape and while they fit securely in my ears, they become very uncomfortable after about 20 minutes and I have to take them out for a while before using them again. I am not sure if in this case if the shape and fit have anything to do with the call quality issue.

What I like

  • The build quality
  • The sound reproduction
  • The amazing charge retention
  • The waterproof feature

What can be improved

  • For me, the shape so that it contours more to the curvature of ears and is, therefore, more comfortable

Final thoughts

These xFryo earbuds fit securely in my ears and work well when exercising. They also sound quite good, but because of the somewhat square design they hurt my ears, and after about 20 minutes I have to take them out. This issue makes it hard for me to fully recommend them because the shape of our ears is another individual characteristic and others may not have this issue. They hold an amazing charge and are definitely waterproof. Since I have personal issues with this model of earbuds, and since I do not want to be unfair, I will not include them in the overall ranking with the others in my contest.

Mavin Air-X TWS earbuds review

REVIEW – It took me a couple of years to find a pair of Bluetooth earbuds that I wanted to wear for more than a few minutes at a time. Why? Because most of the ones I’ve tried over the years either fall out of my ears or have an uncomfortable fit. Then I finally found my current favorites (check my favorite gear page to find out which ones they are) and haven’t been motivated to try any new ones until the offer to review Mavin Air-X TWS earbuds presented itself so let’s check them out and see if they will become my new favorites.

What is it?

The Mavin Air-X TWS earbuds are earbuds that store in a small charging case. What is TWS? It stands for Truly Wireless Stereo and it allows both earbuds to be paired individually to the host device like your phone, tablet, or laptop. It allows you to use either earbud on its own in mono or both in stereo.

What’s in the box?

  • Mavin Air-X TWS earbuds
  • Charging case
  • 3 ear tips
  • 2 sports stabilizers
  • micro USB cable
  • Quick guide

Design and features

The Mavin Air-X earbuds are available in 5 colors including the pink version that you see here. They store in a small plastic case that doubles as the charger.

Pressing the button on the left side of the case will cause the battery status LED to blink in red 1-5 times to give you an idea of the battery capacity. Pressing the same button when the lid is open will put the earbuds in pairing mode.

The opposite side of the case has a micro USB connection to charge the case’s internal batteries. I wish that Mavin would have used USB-C instead of micro USB here.

The charging case lid opens and closes easily and the earbuds themselves are easy to insert and remove from the case.

Each earbud has a button on the outer surface that you’ll use to play and pause the audio content that you’re listening too. You can also use the buttons to raise and lower volume, switch between music tracks, answer and end calls, and even talk to a personal assistant like Siri or Google. But how do you do all that with just two buttons? That’s where you’ll have to remember that the left button does something different from the right button and a single click does something different than a double click, or a click and hold.

The earbuds have 3 contacts on the side. One contact is a magnet that keeps the earbud from falling out of the charging case. The other 2 contacts charge the earbuds. You’ll also notice what looks square hole and a long slot on each earbud. The hole is a microphone and the slot is actually a status LED.

Fit and comfort

The main problems that I have with most earbuds that I review have to do with the fit and comfort. They either fall out of my ears or they fit too well so that they start feeling uncomfortable within minutes of putting them in my ears.

I’m happy to say that I didn’t have this problem with the Mavin Air-X TWS earbuds. They fit well and don’t cause any discomfort. I found the fit to be snug but not too snug. Having said that, I wouldn’t want to run with the Mavin earbuds when only using eartips.

Adding the stabilizer covers make the earbuds fit even more secure so that they won’t fall out if you’re running, jumping, or doing other activities. And bonus, the earbuds fit in the charging case with the stabilizers in place.

Sound quality

I tested the Mavin Air-X earbuds with my Pixel 2 XL, with my 12 MacBook, and with a Dell laptop at my day job. I tested by using Amazon Prime streaming music, Spotify, YouTube, and Netflix. Most of the time small wireless earbuds like the Air-X buds don’t blow me away when it comes to bass but the Mavin’s impressed me with the bass and fullness of the music. They sounded good with all types of music that I tried and I enjoyed using them.

I was also happy that I could use the earbuds while watching streaming video on YouTube and Netflix. The audio and video synced very well with no noticeable delay which is awesome because my current favorites have a slight audio/video syncing delay problem.

I also like that you can listen to either earbud as both are paired to the device. I like to just put the left bud in my ear while I’m at work so that I can hear and talk to people when they come up to my desk without needing to take the earbuds out of my ears.

So far after a couple weeks testing these earbuds I’ve not had any issues with dropped connections either between each earbud or with the paired device.

Call audio quality

There weren’t any issues using the Air-X buds for phone calls other than the usual voice in your head kind of sound that you experience when using in-ear earbuds while talking. The opposite side of the calls said I sounded fine but the could tell that I was using a Bluetooth headset.

What I like

  • Great audio quality including bass
  • No audio/video syncing issues
  • Comfortable fit

What needs to be improved

  • Charge via USB-C instead of micro USB
  • I’d prefer touch control to the physical buttons

Final thoughts

I thought I found my favorite earbuds late last year and was content to stick with them because they fit so well and sounded good. I wasn’t really that excited to review the Mavin Air-X earbuds. But when I actually tried them I was glad I did because they sound great and they don’t have any audio/video syncing issues like the others. I still prefer my current favorites to the Mavin’s for the touch controls vs. physical buttons, but the Mavin Air-X TWS earbuds are a very strong runner up.
