AuCuTee White Noise Sleep Machine review

A good night of sleep has always been a challenge for me. Insomnia seems to follow me no matter how much I try to tire myself out before I head to bed. The last time I can remember not struggling to sleep, was when I lived in the Caribbean near the beach, and when I was near the Amazon. When I got the opportunity to try the AuCuTee, I was curious to find out if replicating the sounds of those familiar environments, would help to take me back to those days.

What is it?

The AuCuTee White Noise Sleep Machine is a device that simulates sounds of various environments, with the added ability to wirelessly charge your phone and act as a speaker via its Bluetooth connectivity.

What’s in the box

1 x AuCuTee White Noise Sleep Machine
1 x Micro USB Cable
1 x USB AC Wall Adapter
1 x Instruction Booklet

Design and features

The AuCuTee is small and lightweight, and while the construction feels a bit cheap, it has not operated in that manner in any way. Starting with connectivity, on the back of the AuCuTee, there is a micro USB port that provides power to the device via the included micro USB cable and AC adapter, a USB port that can be used to power or charge an additional USB device, and speakers on each side.

On the front of the device, there are 10 sliders that represent the 10 sounds that are offered. These sliders work like an audio mixing board and allow you to use each sound individually, or to mix the sounds for the desired effect. To the right of the sliders, is the main volume knob, that turns the device on and off, as well as increases or decreases the volume.

On the top of the front of the AuCuTee, there is a row of control buttons. From left to right, the first 3 control the music playback functions for previous track/track from the beginning, Play/Pause, and next track. The 4th button turns on the Bluetooth capability and pairing mode. This is confirmed by a voice command. The 5th button controls the timing/sleep capability. Each of the green lights in front of this button represents 30, 60 or 90 minutes for the device to go into “sleep” mode. I do not use this function since I prefer the sounds to continue all night just in case I wake up during the night.

The rest of the top of the device is the QI wireless charging pad and it works well just by placing your QI compatible phone on it to charge.

The following picture represents the slider settings that I enjoy the most:

The AuCuTee performs well in all capacities, including the sounds it produces, the wired and wireless charging that it offers, and the Bluetooth connectivity.

What I like

I like the amount and variety of sounds offered, and the ability to mix the sounds. I also like the wireless charging capability and the external charging/power port.

What can be improved

I found that when connected via Bluetooth,  the music volume was much lower than the volume of the sounds, even with both the AuCuTee and phone at maximum volume. Although this device is used for sleeping, I had difficulty hearing the music if my nearby fan was on.

Final thoughts

While I have always felt that these types of “noise” devices that were supposed to help you to sleep were a gimmick, I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by the AuCuTee. I do think that the ability to mix the sounds did the trick for me, and I have been using it to sleep ever since. For me, it is a winner.

Premium bed-in-a-box brand tulo now offering pillows too

Bed-in-a-Box Brand tulo who offers premium boxed mattresses has added pillows to their product line. Their new tulo pillows will be offered in three comfort styles that include soft, medium, and firm comfort levels. The tulo pillows are constructed of high-density titanium infused foam which sounds pretty crazy for a pillow. According to Tulo, the material provides:

enhanced strength and support alongside AquaCool™ phase-change material which acts as a super-conductive highway for heat flow to help maintain ideal temperature. In addition, the pillows are all CertiPUR-US® certified to meet the highest standards for emissions, content, performance, and durability.

It sounds like we’re talking about a computer instead of a pillow but hey, if it’s ultra comfy, I don’t care what it’s made of. I’m currently on a quest to find my next favorite pillow and wonder if a tulo pillow might be the one. They are going to send me one to review, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, tulo pillows are priced at $89 and are now available online, and will be in more than 3,000 Mattress Firm stores nationwide starting June 22. In addition, to celebrate the launch, tulo is hosting two “Pillow Talk” online sales from June 6 – July 10. For more information about tulo or the sales, visit www.tulo.com

Anti-snore nose purifier by Social Hotcakes puts an end to violent snoring

Hog callers and hay mowers, this one is for you. Actually, it’s for who you sleep with.

The anti-snore nose purifier by Social Hotcakes is a gadget made to fit up your nostrils while you sleep and eliminate your snoring, while also acting as an air purifier.

It works by using micro blowers that create pressured airflow through magnetic plates, and usage ultimately results with one partner quiet and the other happy. The colors it comes in are blue, red, and white.

Eliminating snoring and breathing pure air can make your entire night of sleep more enjoyable. Sleeping with a violent snorer is like waking up to an alarm that you never set, and can’t turn off. The heaviest of snorers tend to be in denial, so just gift this to someone who needs it.

It’s only $9.54.

Snore no more.

Bedgear M1X pillow review

I’m incredibly picky when it comes to pillows. That’s why I’ve been using the same one for more years that I want to admit because apparently, it’s gross to sleep on the same pillow for over a decade (maybe two). I’ve tried several types of pillows over the years but I keep going back to my “old faithful”. I even told the folks at BedGear that I’m a pillow snob, but they were still willing to let me try their M1X Pillows, so let’s take one for a… nap.

What is it?

The Bedgear M1X is a 20 x 26 inch pillow that comes in four sizes: 0.0, 1.0 2.0 and 3.0. Each pillow is identical, except for their profile or size/thickness. I told the folks at Bedgear that I am a side sleeper 99% of the time, so they sent me their M1X 2.0 and 3.0 sizes.

Design and features

The M1X pillow comes packaged in a zippered bag and when I removed it, I immediately realized this was not going to be another $30 Kohl’s special. The Bedgear M1X pillow looks and feels superior to any pillow I’ve ever tried.

First of all, it has a curved area for your shoulder which is perfect for side sleepers like me.

The covering of the pillow features Dri-Tec and Air-X technology with a 3D mesh cover that is made of 98% polyester and 2% spandex and is supposed to help prevent allergens and dander from entering the pillow core. Speaking of the core, the M1X has a soft hypoallergenic shredded latex foam fill that provides great support and won’t bottom out. That’s pillow speak which means the pillow keeps its shape while you’re laying on it and bounces back, unlike some down filled pillows which get flat or lumpy during a sleep session.

The Bedgear is a comfortable pillow and I wanted to love it, but the thickness of the 2.0 and 3.0 pillows was a bit too high for me to comfortably sleep on through the whole night. I think I would be better off with either their 1.0 or even their 0.0 size.

That said, I do like the pillow quite a bit and the Dri-Tec and Air-X tech kept the pillow cool and dry even during the weird in-between weather we were having a few weeks ago when it was hard to regulate temps in the house at night with heat and AC. Even when the bedroom was slightly too warm, I didn’t feel sweaty sleeping on the Bedgear pillow.

There is one thing that’s important to mention about the Bedgear M1X pillow. It’s not machine washable. It’s only spot washable and with a price tag of $119, I think it should be fully washable for people who have problems with allergies.

What I like

  • Comfortable
  • Does get lumpy or flat
  • Stays cool
  • Comes in 4 sizes to match your sleep style and body size

What needs to be improved

  • Needs to be washable

Final thoughts

I just returned from a vacation in California where we stayed in 4 different locations, which meant 4 different beds with 4 different pillows. The first night we stayed at a Holiday Inn Express near the Indianapolis airport. It was a very nice hotel that was so new that you could actually smell the newness. The bed was comfortable, but their pillows were like sleeping on a boulder. I don’t think I slept at all that night because like I mentioned in the opening paragraph of this review, I’m a pillow snob and am very picky about the cushion I put under my head at night. The other 3 places where we stayed in California had better pillows, but I would have loved to have had one of the BedGear M1X pillows with me on the trip. Even though the 2.0 and 3.0 sizes are too thick for me, I have little doubt that their thinner versions would make me want to burn my antique pillow once and for all.

This gives new comfort to sleeping on the couch

When space is limited in your home, you need furnishings that do double duty.  This product from CouchBed is the ideal product for folks living in a tiny home, a studio apartment, or for those without a guest room.  As the name suggests, the CouchBed is a couch that easily converts to a bed.

The CouchBed is a 10″ Memory Foam mattress that’s “made with 100% CertiPur certified ultra-dense memory foam, combined with phase-change material to actively cool the sleeping surface, so it won’t get hot like traditional memory foam.”  CertiPur means the product is free of “ozone depleters, formaldehyde, mercury, lead or heavy metals, and meet CertiPUR-US® standards for content, emissions and durability.”  The mattress is made with a “hinge”, so you can flip up part to turn the mattress into a couch.

CouchBed says it’s sturdy and comfortable enough to be used as your daily couch and daily bed.  It’s available in a twin size for $299.99 or a queen size ($449.99).  You’ll select from a black, charcoal, limestone, blue, or red cover, and you’ll receive two bamboo-infused Memory Foam pillows free with each CouchBed purchased.

If you desire a little extra height for your sofa and your bed, you can pre-order the adjustable platform.  The solid wood platform adds 10″ of height.  It slides closed when the CouchBed is in the couch form and slides open to accommodate the mattress form.  Platforms will begin shipping in June.  Twin size is $249.99 and the queen is $299.99.  If you are buying the CouchBed and platform together, use the COMBO code for a $50 discount.
