Nomad’s new Base Station wireless charger is a beauty

NEWS – Wireless chargers have been around for a while in all kinds of shapes and sizes. However, most designs tend to go more for function than form. The newly-announced Nomad Base Station is a wireless charger that not only chargers four devices at the same time it also looks good doing it. The charging pad has a sleek, modern design that includes a padded leather wireless charging surface with a soft finish for your phone to rest on.

Making it one of the most beautifully designed charging pads on the market to date.

Along with good looks, the charging pad boasts 3 high-power coils, for dual 10W wireless charging. There are also two USB ports, A USB-A 7.5W port and a USB-C PD that has an 18W output for fast charging.

There’s also an LED charging indicator light and an ambient light sensor that dims the LEDs at night.

The Base Station wireless charger is up for pre-order on Nomad’s website for $99.95. And will officially begin shipping on October 1.

AIKO 10W Fast Wireless Charger Stand review

REVIEW – Since Apple (finally) threw its hat into the wireless charging ring with its latest iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone X models, wireless charging products have been multiplying in the market like rabbits.  One of the latest that we’ve had the opportunity to evaluate here at The Gadgeteer is the AIKO 10W Fast Wireless Charger Stand.  Let’s check it out!  Gadget on!

What is it?

The AIKO 10W Fast Wireless Charger Stand is a wireless charger for Qi-enabled devices that has two charging coils and allows vertical or horizontal orientation while charging.  It also includes a Qualcomm 3.0 AC adapter.

Hardware specs

  • Qi-certified charging
  • Input: 5V/2.0A; 9.0V/1.8A
  • Frequency: 110-250 kHz
  • Output:
    • 5W Output: Samsung S6/S6 edge, Google Nexus 7 (2013) / 6 / 5 / 4, LG G2 / G3 / G6 Plus / Lucid 2 / Lucid 3 / Optimus F5 / Optimus G Pro / Optimus it L-05E / Spectrum 2 / Vu 2 / Vu 3 / V30 / V30.
    • 7.5W Output: iPhone X / iPhone 8 / iPhone 8 Plus (iOS 11.2 or later versions required).

  • Sleep Charging mode
  • Horizontal Charging
  • Non-Slip Rubber Coating
  • AC Adapter: Qualcomm 3.0 AC adapter (input 110-240V, 50/60 Hz)

What’s in the package?

Curiously, “AIKO” does not appear anywhere on this product that I could find.

  • Wireless Charger Pad Stand
  • Qualcomm 3.0 AC Adapter
  • 3.3 foot Micro USB Cable
  • User Manual

Design and features

First impression: The charger stand had a style that appeared would aesthetically complement many smartphones, and it had an overall solid feel and construction.

This charging stand includes a Qualcomm 3.0 AC adapter, which is actually a really nice inclusion for the price of this product ($24.99).

The Qualcomm AC adapter is connected to the charging stand via a flat, ribbon-type USB-to-Micro USB cable that plugs into the back of the charging stand’s base, as depicted in the image above.

The underside of the charging stand’s base has four small, soft rubber pads, one at each corner, to act as non-skid feet.  In addition, the center of the charger stand’s base has a panel with rows of small holes to help in venting heat during charging.

This idea of venting heat from the interior of the charger stand was carried throughout the product, as seen in the image above where light can be seen through the small holes on either side of the upright portion of the charger stand.  These are through-holes that again help to vent heat and keep the innards of the device cooler.

One of the touted features of this charger stand is that it actually includes two charging coils, one above the other, which are oriented such that they form the shape of the number “8.”  Due to having two coils instead of a single coil, and their orientation, this charging stand can be used to charge a phone in either a vertical or horizontal orientation (more on this below).

One additional feature of note: the surfaces of the charging stand that come in contact with the phone to be charged have a soft, rubber-like coating to help prevent scratching of the phone that is being charged.

I evaluated this charger stand with my wife’s Apple iPhone X, which had no problem with charging in the vertical orientation.

As seen above, the phone sits down in a bit of a groove to help prevent it from falling over while being placed in the charger stand.

Above, the series of small head-venting holes in the rear of the upright portion of the charging stand are visible.

In addition to vertical orientation, I also rotated the iPhone 90 degrees from vertical and placed it onto the charging stand in a horizontal orientation.  Again, no issues with charging in this position.

Finally, I tried the charging stand with the iPhone X while it was placed inside the Tech 21 Evo Check protective case that my wife typically uses.  This is a relatively thick case, probably several millimeters thick, but the charging stand did not have any issues charging the phone while in this case.

Keep in mind that your experience may differ if you use a different protective case; one that is thicker or uses different materials may affect the charging performance of the stand.

Once a Qi-enabled phone is placed in the charging stand, an LED bar on the front of the base illuminates green to indicate that charging has begun, as seen in the image above.

One thing my wife noticed while using this charger for her iPhone X was that it emitted a relatively quiet but noticeable clicking sound, almost like the ticking of an analog watch, when plugged into a power source.  When the iPhone was placed on it, the frequency of the clicking/ticking increased.  This sound was almost imperceptible under normal, daytime ambient sound conditions, but in a quiet bedroom at night, it was quite annoying.

What I like

  • Minimalist, cool-looking design (IMO)
  • Simple to use
  • Includes an AC adapter

What needs to be improved

  • Faint but annoying clinking/ticking sound

Final thoughts

The AIKO 10W Fast Wireless Charger Stand is a wireless charger for any Qi-enabled wireless charging capable devices.  This charging stand has two charging coils that help enable vertical or horizontal orientation while charging.  The upright portion of the charging stand has a soft material to help protect the phone being charged from scratches and also includes many tiny holes to help vent heat from the inside of the device while charging.  It also includes a Qualcomm 3.0 AC adapter.  This charger stand has a stylish, minimalist design and is simple to operate and can even charge phones that are inside of protective cases (though the case thickness may affect charging performance).  I found this to be a good value for its price.

Azpen DockAll D108 wireless docking station review

There are so many QI wireless chargers and Bluetooth docks available to consumers today, that manufacturers must provide well built, feature-packed devices to appeal to customers, and to win the battle to be the device of choice. Let’s see how this one “stands up”.

What is it?

The Azpen DockAll wireless docking station is a QI wireless fast charging dock with Bluetooth connectivity and hands-free phone capability.

What’s in the box

In the box, you will find the dock, the manual, the AC adapter,  and the warranty card.

Design and features

This Azpen dock is a well-built dock, with a good solid feel to it, and very nice features. When you first turn on the dock, there is a voice announcement that confirms that it is in Bluetooth mode and ready to be paired. Pairing is very simple. The dock appears as “DOCK ALL” in your Bluetooth settings, and once selected, it pairs immediately.

On the back of the dock, there are 2 USB charging ports that allow you to charge two devices in addition to the QI wireless charging capability. To the right of the USB charging ports, there is a micro SD port that allows you to insert a micro SD card as large as 64GB  with the music of your choice, and the dock will automatically play the music. The music controls on the front of the dock work for music played from the SD card as well. To the right of the micro SD slot, there is the power jack and to the right of the jack, there is the power button. There are air vents on both ends of the back of the dock.

On each side of the dock, there is a really nice sounding speaker. Together, the 2 speakers sound well-balanced and are loud enough to easily fill a 200 square foot room.

On the lower front of the dock, there are the controls for the music and sound, including volume up and down, track forward and backward, play/pause, the microphone, and the phone handsfree control.

When your phone is connected to the dock via Bluetooth, the handsfree function can be used for phone calls. When the phone or tablet is properly docked, there is a blue LED along the lower front of the dock that confirms the proper connection to the QI wireless charging pad. The ledge that the phone rests on is wide enough and deep enough to even accommodate a full-sized tablet.

What I like

I really like the build quality of this dock, and the sound it produces both for music and for phone calls. Its ability to play music from a micro SD card is a real bonus. The additional features of the charging ports work really well, along with the easy Bluetooth connectivity.

What can be improved

The only issue I encountered with this dock is that several times when I disconnected from the Bluetooth connection, it would randomly reconnect and my music or conversations would then be played via the dock, sometimes even when I was in another room. I am not sure whether the dock or my smartphone is to blame for this, but maybe a Bluetooth on/off button would be a good addition.

Final thoughts

The Azpen DockAll wireless docking station does enough of what it is designed to do well enough, that it is a good choice for an all-in-one solution of this kind. Its functions work well and with ease, and it seems like it would stand up to normal “wear and tear” for years to come. While its longevity is still to be determined, it now has a permanent place on the counter in my kitchen where my wife uses it to listen to music from her phone and to carry on her normal phone conversations while free to move around, because of the very capable handsfree function.

CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad review

While wireless phone charging is certainly not new (Android phones have this capability for some time), it has exploded in popularity in the past several months due, arguably, to the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X having incorporated the wireless Qi charging standard into their newest feature sets.  With this has come a veritable tech tsunami of wireless charging devices for Qi-enabled phones of all types.  Here, we try out the CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad.

What is it?

The CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad is a simple, low-cost, wireless charger that can be used with any phone that supports the wireless Qi charging standard.

Tech specs

  • Model number = T511
  • Color options = Black (reviewed here), Rose Gold, Blue, Red
  • Qi charging standard certified
  • Input = 5 Volts @ 2 Amps
  • Output = 5 Watts
  • Dimensions = 3.5 x 3.5 x 0.4 in
  • Over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature protection
  • Compatible with iPhone 8 / 8 Plus, iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 / S8 / S8 Plus, S7 / S7 Edge and other Qi-enabled devices
  • Location of manufacture = China

What’s in the box?

Inside the box were the above items show in the image above and listed below:

  • CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad
  • Micro USB cable
  • User Manual
  • Adorable Panda bookmark

Design and Features

The CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad is a slim design with a square footprint.  It has a soft-to-the-touch satin finish and in its center it features a gray silicone dot with two sets of gray silicone “waves” emanating outward from either side.  This dot and waves are intended to act as a target to aid the user in positioning their Qi charging-enabled phone onto the pad to align the charge transmitting and receiving hard for best charging results.  Assembly consisted of simply plugging the included micro USB cable into its port on the back of the charging pad.  Note that the CHOETECH Wireless Charger does not include any type of power adapter, and CHOETECH recommends a 5V/1.5-2.4A adapter for best result.

The underside of the pad features a small rubber foot located at each of the four corners.  These pad help prevent the pad from slipping around while placing your phone onto or removing your phone from the pad.  However, don’t be like me and forget to remove the thin plastic layers protecting the feet (as seen in the image above)—the foot pads grip much better with the plastic removed. 🙂

As mentioned above, the CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad is quite slim, as seen in the image above.  It is only 0.4 inches (about 10mm) thick.

The first phone that I tested with the CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad was my daughter’s iPhone 8 Plus.  She typically protects her iPhone 8 Plus in a case (currently a floral-print Vera Bradley case), and she has also attached a Pop Socket to the outside of the case.  See above for details.

With the case and the Pop Socket attached to the iPhone 8 Plus, it sat quite a bit off-center of the pad, as seen in the images above and below.

The Pop Socket prevented the CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad from actually charging her iPhone 8 Plus.  My guess is that the location of the Pop Socket prevented the Qi charging hardware in both the iPhone and charging pad from aligning properly, thus preventing transfer of energy between the pad and iPhone.

Next, I removed my daughter’s iPhone 8 Plus from her case and placed it back on the CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad, as shown in the images above and below.

As can be seen in the previous two images, the pad charged her iPhone with no issues once the case and attached Pop Socket was removed.  With the Pop Socket no longer blocking proper alignment between the charging hardware in the iPhone and the pad, it charged as expected.  Additionally, the iPhone 8 Plus charged with no issues in either the horizontal or vertical orientation.

Next, I tried out the CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad with my wife’s iPhone X.  My wife does have her iPhone X in a case, but does not have a Pop Socket on it.  I found that without the Pop Socket but even within the case, her iPhone X charged as expected, as seen above.  In fact, I had a fair amount of freedom to position her iPhone X, provided that it was roughly centered on the pad, and still achieve a charging connection.  Charging the iPhone X while in the case didn’t seem to slow down the charging speed, but it did seem to produce a bit of heat on the surface of the case.  So, although the pad’s User Manual recommends removing your phone from a case to charge it, this did not seem to impede the charging of my wife’s iPhone X.

In the interest of being thorough, I then removed the case from my wife’s iPhone X and as expected, it charged without issue.  I even varied the position from vertical to horizontal relative to the pad (see images above and below) and it didn’t seem to affect the charging, as long as the iPhone remained fairly centered on the pad, using the dot and waves to help align it properly.

In the image above, you can see the blue indicator light on the front of the charging pad, which illuminates when a positive charging connection has been made.

After using the CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad for several weeks, my wife reported that she really likes it.  It doesn’t charge as fast as a cable connection, but its level of convenience is increased over plugging in and unplugging a cable.  She just lays her iPhone X—while in the case—on the pad and, ensuring that it is properly aligned, it charges every time, and when she wakes up in the morning, she can just grab it and go.   It should be noted that this charger does not support rapid charging, so if you have a phone that supports this feature, you will not be able to take advantage of it with the CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad.  I didn’t really miss this feature because Apple has yet to include rapid charging in the latest iPhones.

What I like

  • Simple, clean, thin design
  • Works with or without a case, though the phone must be aligned with the pad properly.

What needs to be improved

  • Nothing that I can report at this time

Final thoughts

The CHOETECH Wireless Charging Pad is a simple, functional wireless charging device that seems to work well for its relatively low price.

Wofalodata Fast Wireless Charger review

What is it?

The Wofalodata Fast Wireless Charger is a 2 in 1 wireless charging pad with a kickstand that meets the QI fast charging technology standard.

What’s in the box

Package contents:

1 x Wireless charger
1 x Kickstand
1 x Micro USB cable
1 x Instruction booklet

Design and features

The Wofalodata Fast Wireless Charger is a small and compact wireless charger that conforms to the QI wireless charging technology standard. It is made up of a wireless charging pad and a removable kickstand that can be neatly tucked away in the back.

On the side, there is a micro USB port that accommodates the included micro USB cable to supply power to the pad for charging.

On the front of the charging pad, there is a LED light. When the charger is first plugged in, the LED blinks red and then goes to a steady blue when it is ready to provide charging. The instructions suggest that you can place your phone in a horizontal or vertical position, but I found that with my iPhone 8Plus, it was awkward and would tend to want to tip over. The vertical position did not seem to allow the larger phone to make good contact with the charging pad. Horizontally, it fit well, but that is as far as the good news goes when trying to charge my iPhone 8Plus. Once I placed my phone to charge, it would initially charge for approximately 2 minutes with the steady blue LED light, and the blue LED would start blinking for about 90 seconds and then the LED would turn red and the phone would stop charging. After a few seconds, the LED would turn blue again, and start charging again. This cycle of events continued until I removed the phone from the charger, and occurred each of the dozen or so times I tried.
Now it is important to note that I have at least 3 other Qi wireless charging pads, 2 of which are cheap no frills pads, and one is a more expensive Samsung pad. Irrespective of the make, they all perform flawlessly. This issue that I experienced with this charging pad is unexplainable.

After deciding to no longer risk trying to charge my iPhone on this pad, I tried an old Samsung Galaxy 6 phone, and that worked without issue. In about 30 minutes, the Samsung charged approximately 30 percent.

What I like

  • Wireless charger is lightweight
  • Nice and convenient Kickstand

What can be improved

  • Wireless charger must be able to charge all cell phones that meet the QI wireless charging standards.

Final thoughts

There are numerous inexpensive wireless chargers available today, and each one needs to meet the basic criteria for wireless charging to be considered for purchase. While this charger is lightweight and has a nice compact form factor, the issues I experienced with it when trying to charge my iPhone 8Plus, make it a “no go” for me.
