WaterField’s Tech Pocket is for the minimalist who carries only a small amount of gear

NEWS – Recently, we told you about the Tech Folio from WaterField.  It was one of the products of their Next Generation Gear Case community design project, in which WaterField surveyed many of their gear-loving customers to help them design gear bags that people actually want and can use.  The Tech Folio was a large pocket capable of holding a lot of gear, including a tablet.  The next product from the community design project is the Tech Pocket, which is designed for the minimalist who carries only a few tech items.

The Tech Pocket reminds me of WaterField’s Finn wallets in a way.  It, like the Finn, has a couple of interior pockets to hold smaller gear with an open center space to hold bigger items.  It measures 7.50” x 4.75″ and weighs 4.3 oz.  It organizes the small EDC items that don’t fit in your pockets in a pouch small enough to hand carry or stow in a larger bag as your organizer pouch.

The top of the bag opens like some coin purses I’ve seen, with two magnetic, hinged bars that bow open for access then snap shut and hold the bag closed.  Inside, the soft, plush, cashmere-like lining protects your gear.    A front zipper pocket gives easy access to earbuds or other often-used items.

Two loops on the ends allow you to attach a carabiner.  They can also be used to attach the Tech Pocket inside another bag or even to attach a shoulder strap.  It’s made of 1050-denier black ballistic nylon or of waxed canvas.

Organize your gadgets and accessories in the Tech Folio from Waterfield

Waterfield surveyed many of their gear-loving customers to help them design gear bags that people actually want and can use.  The Tech Folio is one of the products of that Next Generation Gear Case community design project.  It was designed to be the everyday carry organizer for chargers, cables, USB flash drives or external drives, a mouse, or other similar gear, and it even has room for an iPad Pro 10.5, Surface Go with Typecover, or similarly-sized tablets.  (You’ll see a tablet peaking out from behind the pouches on the right, as seen in the top image.)

The interior has a series of see-through mesh pockets that are designed to hold your cables without requiring you to carefully wind them to exact dimensions before they’ll fit, plus there’s plenty of room for other gear.  The front has a zipper pocket with room for your phone, stylus, and more gear or cables.  The Folio measures 10.5″ x 8″ x 2″ and weighs 0.95 lb.  It can be used on its own, worn with an optional strap, or used as an organizer inside of a larger bag.

The Tech Folio works in a professional atmosphere as easily as it does in a more casual environment.  It’s available in black 1050-denier ballistic nylon with a distressed black leather panel or in waxed canvas with a chocolate brown distressed leather panel.  The Tech Folio is $119.  You can add a standard strap for an additional $12 or the Suspension strap for $22 extra.

BOND Travel Gear Tool Roll Review

REVIEW – In college, someone once described my clutter as “organized piles of stuff”. It’s been a long time since my college days, and I try to keep my gear in order. Today I’ve got the BOND Travel Gear Tool Roll to review.

What is it?

The BOND Travel Gear Tool Roll is a nylon organizer with pouches and slots that comes in tan or black. I was sent one of each.

  • 3x pockets and “No slip” silicone-backed elastic holds items in place

  • Double stitching and bartacking throughout

Design and features

The outside of the roll is held together by a single metal buckle that you slide into one of several slots.

Flip the roll over, and you’ll see the BOND logo tag.
There’s a mesh zippered pouch on the inside. I was painting earlier in the day, so please excuse the paint on my hands.

Setup

I stuffed the pouch with a bunch of commonly used hand tools I use around the house, including small screwdrivers, multitools, tweezers, calipers, zip-ties, wire strippers and cutters.

Despite all this, it still folded up nicely into a compact package.

Performance

One thing I noticed is that once closed, the ends of the roll tend to curl up a bit, depending on what you put in.

What I like

Very simple and has a variety of slots for different items.

What needs to be improved

The ends that lift up kind of bother my OCD a little!

Final thoughts

The BOND Travel Gear Tool Roll is a handsome, sturdy package, but the exposed ends kind of bother me, especially given the price. It will depend on what you pack it with!

Condor EMT Glove Pouch Review

REVIEW – I’ve got EMT training but nowadays, most “injuries” I see happen in my role as Assistant Scoutmaster. Not only do I teach First Aid Merit Badge, but injuries are commonplace with active boys! You always need personal protective gear nearby, so I got a chance to try out the Condor EMT Glove Pouch.

What is it?

The Condor EMT Glove Pouch hold about 3-4 pair of disposable gloves on your belt or other equipment via snap closures. A split elastic seam on the front permits easy access to gloves, like a tissue paper box.

Design and features

Glove pouches are designed for easy access to disposable gloves. The gloves are accessed through the split elastic front. If you really want, you can unfasten the hook and loop closure on the top as well, but that’s an extra step. The rear of the pouch has a snap closure and MOLLE straps.

Setup

Here you can see I’ve threaded my Boy Scout uniform belt through the snap loops. I tucked the snaps under one of the MOLLE loops just to see if I could.

Performance

Here’s the glove pouch on the side of my Scout uniform. In this case, the color isn’t an exact match for my pants, but close enough.

What I like

That split elastic closure on the front face is really handy! It’s really like a tissue dispenser but for gloves.

What needs to be improved

The belt attachment is kind of gigantic at first unless you tuck in the excess into the MOLLE straps. Otherwise, you could probably attach this pouch to anything you can think of.

Final thoughts

If you’re tired of shoving gloves in your pants pocket, give your pockets a break and get a pouch.

Toffee Handmade Banjo Leather Zip Pouch review

REVIEW – I’m an absolute sucker for bags, pouches, satchels, cases … you name it. If it’s an object that holds smaller objects, I want to give it a try. So my eyes lit up when I got the chance to review Toffee’s Banjo Leather Zip Pouch.

What is it?

Toffee’s Banjo Leather Zip Pouch is a handy sized pouch handcrafted from smooth, thick, raw leather. It fits a passport, many sizes of mobile phones, several cards and cash.

Oh, that rugged and thick raw leather.

I like that little tag and bag. Nice packaging.

Design and Features

The first thing that stands out with this large, zippered pouch is just how soft, supple and thick the leather material is. It has a nice texture to it, smooth but not shiny. It looks like it could really take a beating and look all the better for it.

The Banjo Pouch exudes quality. It’s got that warm feeling, holding it, that some extremely skilled leatherworker personally crafted this wallet just for you (because, well, they did.)

Inside the zippered pouch is a long pocket meant for your phone, and two card pockets on either side. I have an iPhone 7+ and found that this size phone juuuuust fits in that phone divider. An iPhone 8 or X something of similar size and thickness would fit just fine. I usually don’t carry my phone inside of a pouch or bag, simply because I like quick access to it to review tasks and messages, but the Banjo Pouch could act as a combination wallet/phone case.

The pouch itself is just a bit larger than an iPhone 7+.

Instead, I used the center slot to hold receipts, coupons, cash and other paper items, and it worked very well for that purpose.

Instead, I opted to use the center divider for paper items.

The overall size of the pouch proved to be a little too large for some pairs of pants. It fit okay inside the roomy pockets of my cargo shorts, and the soft leather formed comfortably against my leg. However, I imagine this pouch would work better in a backpack or bag or carrying it as a small clutch.

The only knock I could bring against this pouch is the price. You’re paying for fine materials and expert craftsmanship, and the durability of this pouch is high as well, so much so that one could hand it down for generations. Despite that, I’d guess that $100+ is too steep an asking price for most.

What I liked

  • Gorgeous, handcrafted raw leather
  • Fits most phones, a passport, cash and several cards
  • Will last a lifetime or more

What to consider before buying

  • It’s rather expensive

Final thoughts

The Banjo Zip Pouch is gorgeous, durable, and feels great in your hand if you can swing the cost.
