The GVB Gear Compact Daylight On-Camera Light may just be your go to light when on the go!

Whether you are an aspiring or professional photographer/videographer, or just enthusiastic about capturing photos and video, there are likely many occasions when you just grab your camera as you head out of the door, with the anticipation of capturing a great photo or some good footage. Whenever I do the same, I always seem to find myself in a situation where I can get a great shot, or some great footage, but I am missing some accessory that would make the task easier and the outcome much better. A few times when I have been in this situation, I can remember wishing that I had an on-camera light, but when on the go, the light and the weighty battery are just too much extra to carry for a casual and unplanned shoot. After all, many times I return home with no photos or footage worth mentioning.

The GVB Gear Compact Daylight On-Camera Light with Built-In Battery may be the perfect on-camera light for this scenario. It is 5600K daylight light with a 120 degree beam, and a CRI (color rendering index) between 95 and 97. It has a built-in 2500mAh rechargeable battery which eliminates the need to carry that extra weighty battery. The battery provides enough power for approximately 2 hours of use. The light is dimmable, and includes diffusion that attaches magnetically. The package also includes a phone clamp, and a cold shoe adapter. This light weighs only 6 ounces, which is great for the complete on-the-go on-camera light solution.

If you would like to purchase the GVB Gear Compact Daylight On-Camera Light with Built-In Battery, you can head over to Amazon or B&H Photo Video and pick one up for $39.00.

The LENSKIRT Flexible Lens Hood makes shooting through glass easier

For those of us photographers and videographers who enjoy shooting cityscapes, or aquariums, or other types of photography that may require us to shoot through glass, the challenge of light reflections is a real one. If this challenge is not managed correctly, the “stray” light will definitely show up in your photo, and may not always be easily removed via editing.

The LENSKIRT Flexible Lens Hood blocks out unwanted environmental light reflections when shooting through glass. It is an affordable solution used by many professional photographers for shooting photos, videos, and even for shooting in time-lapse mode. It allows for wide lenses up to 15mm, and for lens up to 8 inches in diameter. The front of the Lenskirt has a 9 x 10-inch opening that has suction cups built-in to adhere it to the glass. It has a drawstring that allows you to easily secure it around almost any lens.

The simple but effective LENSKIRT Flexible Lens Hood can be purchased at B&H Photo Video for $48.

The Yongnuo YN-24EX TTL Macro Flash for Canon Cameras is flashy but not pricey

Once again, Yongnuo is making a difference in the photography industry with another one of their photography products. The Yongnuo YN-24EX TTL Macro Flash for Canon Cameras is a great product that works very well, and is priced less than 1/5 the cost of the Canon macro twin flash. I own this twin flash, and while it is not completely equal to its Canon counterpart, it comes in at a very close 2nd place. It is well built, quite solid, and quite durable. Since these types of gear must always be handled with care, there is no weakness in build quality when compared to Canon’s twin flash.

This twin flash fully supports Canon’s E-TTL / E-TTL II system, and also allows for the usual manual control. Just like the Canon version, it has two flash heads that mount on the front of your lens. You can control the position of each flash head for optimal lighting of the subject. There is a LED autofocus assist light built in, and “users have access to both 1st and 2nd curtain sync”. The flash also has a PC sync port, and it can be powered by 4 AA batteries or an HV power pack. Included in the box are 4 adapter rings (52mm, 58mm, 67mm, and 72mm), and a nice protective pouch good for storage and transporting.

If you would like to purchase the Yongnuo YN-24EX TTL Macro Flash for Canon Cameras, head over to Amazon or B&H Photo Video and pick one up for $171.

The Octopus.Camera OctoPad Universal Weighted Support Base with Removable Ball-Joint Head can really get down

Recently, I have been on a search for several types of photography and videography gear, and I have been focusing on a few specific types of gear. Monopods and tripods have been a major part of that focus. There are times when we have some very unique shooting requirements, and the standard tripod or monopod just will not handle the job. There are several manufacturers that make unique “mutations” for exactly those types of gigs.

The Octopus Camera OctoPad Universal Weighted Support Base with Removable Ball-Joint Head, is a great example of this type of gear. It is a support system that sits flat on a surface, and creates a stable non-slip platform for mounting up to a 5 pound camera rig.

It also works well for mounting monitors, or sound recorders, or any other type of gear up to 5 pounds, that can be mounted on to its built-in ¼”-20 threaded mount. The base is made from Cordura and Neoprene, and it is filled with stainless steel shot balls to provide the weight necessary to make it stable. There is also a cable strap that you can use to further secure your equipment.

You can head over to B&H Photo Video and purchase one for $24.95.

The iFootage Cobra 2 C180 Carbon Fiber Monopod is a nice addition to your photo/video gear

Staying on the subject of monopods, I found another interesting one that I think is worth mentioning, and has its own place in the photo/video gear box.

The iFootage Cobra 2 C180 Carbon Fiber Monopod is not necessarily considered a small footprint monopod for traveling or for easily attaching to a backpack, but its features are great, and it would work well on location. It does come in two sizes, but for this news story, I will be focusing on the larger one that when fully extended reaches a height of 70.9 inches, and when collapsed is still reasonably small at 27.8 inches. The leg has 4 sections and uses “buckle-like” leg locks. It can support a load up to 22 pounds, and the mounting plate includes both ¼”-20 and 3/8”-16 threaded studs to accommodate just about any tripod head. At the base of the monopod there are 3 feet that provide stability. The base has a lock, and includes a knob that allows you to adjust and apply the correct amount of friction to accommodate the weight of your camera. The base is also completely removable. The feet have a button release that either allows them to fold up completely, or at specific angles of 20, 50 or 78 degrees. Despite its size, this monopod weighs only 3 pounds. If necessary, the entire base-foot section can be removed, and the monopod can be used as low-angle minipod.

If you would like to take a closer look at the iFootage Cobra 2 C180 Carbon Fiber Monopod, you can head over to B&H photo video and check it out. You can also purchase it there for $179.
