The Gear Eye keeps and eye on things for photographers

I wonder how many of my fellow photographers end up like I have on many shoots, when I get to the location and realize that I forgot to pack something, and to make matters worse, packed gear the I did not need. This is a frequent problem that I experience no matter how much I plan. It either occurs because I have back to back shoots and very little time to re-pack my bags, or because I took something out of the bag and forgot to replace it.

A couple of days ago, I was surfing for photography gear online, which by now you all know is something I love to do, and I came across what may be a great solution.

Gear Eye is a small scanner that works along with RFID stickers and a mobile app, to tag all your gear and track it via the app. When setting up each tag, you can label each piece of equipment, so that when it is scanned, it shows up in the app as labeled. This allows you to pack a bag and then scan the items in the bag, and to know exactly what you have packed. What is even better, is that you can plan and determine what gear you need for a shoot and add that event with the gear list to the app. Once that is done, when you scan your gear bag, you can see on the app what equipment is in the bag, what is missing, and what may have been packed but not needed. This is great for efficiency and making sure that you are not carrying around extra weight.

The Gear Eye Starter kit is available for pre-order via the Gear Eye website for $185.

The TRILENS is a 3 lens holder for Photographers on the go

One of the many challenges that I face when out on a photography shoot, is how to manage interchanging multiple lenses quickly and safely. I can remember going out to shoot at a park that also had a pier, and I wanted to shoot landscapes, objects on the ocean, and some macro photography of flowers and insects in the park. I walked with my Sigma 70-200mm and Canon 24-105mm lenses for the landscape and ocean shots, and my Sigma 105mm macro lenses for macro photography. If you know the Sigma 70-200mm, you know that it is a heavy lens and must be handled carefully. Dropping this lens will result in major damage, so I had it safely in my Think Tank Holster, while I had a belt with two lens cases to secure the other lens. To make a long story short, I missed so many shots that day when I saw opportunities for great photos of moving targets, but I had the wrong lens attached for those shots, and simply could not swap lenses safely and quickly enough to take advantage of the moment. I eventually packed up and headed home because of the overwhelming frustration.

Now I know that some photographers carry multiple camera bodies with the additional lenses that they need, but for me, that was simply too much for that outing.

Since then, I have been on a quest to find a workable solution, and recently I came across the TRILENS. The great device clips to a gear belt and has three secure receptacles to secure three lenses. It claims to manage the strongest point of gravity very well to keep it close to the body, and it rotates easily for the selection and swapping of lenses. For me, this design seems like it will work well, and provide the quickness I need to change my lens, as well as allow me a better chance at capturing those great photography moments that I would otherwise miss.

If you would like to learn more about the TRILENS or purchase one, you can head over to the Friidesigns website or their Indiegogo funding page and pick one up for approximately $140 USD (€99.00EUR) plus shipping.

The Universal Lens Cap is the answer to great lens protection

If you are like me, when you are using multiple lenses for a photo shoot, you try to keep the lens caps in some sort of order so that it is easy to pick up the right one for the right lens without having to try multiple times. However, in my case, and I am sure that I am not alone in this, the caps inevitably get mixed up and getting the right one on the lens becomes a distraction and sometimes quite frustrating in the middle of a busy shoot.

I recently came across a company called Kurvd that makes a really great Universal Lens Cap. “The ULC fits any lens with a barrel diameter between 60mm and 150mm”. This means that it will fit almost every lens in my kit, and it no longer matters which lens cap I grab. It is also built to completely cover the lens for better protection from dust and water and even the occasional unintentional “bump”. By design, it cannot fall off because of an accidental touch or because of any weird vibration, as conventional lens caps can and do.

If you would like to grab one of these Universal Lens Caps, you can head over to the Kurvd website and pick one up for $30.00.

The Manfrotto Compact Action Aluminum Tripod is ready to go with you everywhere

Every photographer and filmmaker that I know owns several tripods of various sizes and capacities to accommodate as many of the shooting scenarios that we eventually experience. We also spend quite a bit of money on tripods, from smaller amounts on travel tripods or tripods for light work, all the way to thousands for our major production tripods. Sometimes it is very hard to find the perfect travel tripod, because of the difference in weight and size of the combination of cameras we can have with us at any time. In my case, I also may use a tripod to set up an audio recorder or a flash in its own remote area.

One of the tripods that I purchased and use quite often is the Manfrotto Compact Action aluminum Tripod. While this tripod if not made of carbon fiber, it is lightweight enough and adjustable enough that it fits my needs in several types of shoots. It weighs only 2.6 lbs., but it has a load capacity of 3.3 lbs., and I have frequently used it successfully with a bit more weight than that. The legs extend in 5 sections, but I can only push the weight limit when I use it in a much shorter position. It is 17.8 inches folded and 61 inches when fully extended. It has a pistol head grip that works like a joystick, and it includes built-in adjustments for both vertical and horizontal movement and locking, and its own quick release plate.

If you are looking for a compact and lightweight tripod that is durable, you can pick up this Manfrotto tripod at B&H Photo Video or Amazon for $64.88.

Ruggard Lens Cases are built for the job!

If you have been in the photography or videography field for some time, you have undoubtedly amassed quite a collection of lens, and you most likely spent thousands of dollars in doing so. Often, the lens cases that are included with your purchase of your expensive lens are ok, but do not readily inspire a feeling of confidence that they would do a really good job of protecting the lens.

I have always felt the same way, and over time, I have invested in Ruggard Lens Cases for every lens I own. The Ruggard lens cases are available in approximately 9 different sizes, and are well built and padded for great lens protection. The outside of their cases is made of a durable water-resistant shell that ensures the protection of your lens from spills and other liquid mishaps. The zippers are strong and there is material overlapping them to protect any foreign substance from entering what is always a weak point on any case. By simply touching the interior, you can tell that the walls are thick and made of high-density foam to provide superior protection. A removable and adjustable shoulder strap, a belt loop, and an external grab handle complete the safety package.

The next time you are looking for a great quality lens case, you can find the Ruggard Lens Cases at B&H Photo Video or Amazon starting at $14.99 for the smallest case.
