Samsung’s Chef Collection proves that the future of kitchens is customizeable

Samsung has been making a name for themselves lately by taking kitchen appliances and transforming them into essentially gigantic gadgets – for example, their Family Hub 2.0 smart fridge has a large touchscreen display at the center of it which helps transform the fridge into the center of the kitchen. Their new Chef Collection however turns down the flashiness a bit by offering a more sophisticated set of appliances which can be customized to fit into your home’s design aesthetic. To that effect, the Chef Collection’s fridge foregoes a large display and instead it can be installed a built-in. The Chef’s Collection dishwasher and refrigerator can also be customized with panels to match the look and feel of your kitchen.

That’s not to say that the appliances in their new Chef Collection aren’t high tech – because they are. All of the appliances are Wi-Fi or Bluetooth enabled and be can controlled with an app. The new Samsung Chef Collection 4-Door Flex Built-in Refrigerator packs in three View Inside cameras which let you see what’s in your fridge – even while you’re shopping at the supermarket. Can’t remember if you need milk? Not a problem! The 4-Door Flex also has a Flex Zone compartment which is able to convert from being a fridge to a freezer, and vice versa, all with the touch of a button.

You can control your oven from your phone

The induction cooktop in the Chef Collection uses Virtual Flame technology which provides chefs with the visual look and feel of a real fire. The knobs on the cooktop also removable. Leave them on if you prefer an analog look, or remove them to go completely digital. Last but not least, the Flex Duo Oven has a smart divider that lets you essentially transform a single oven into two separate independent convection ovens that cook multiple dishes at different temperatures at the same time. The oven’s temperature can be controlled and monitored with an app.

All of the models in the Chef Collection are available now in a choice of stainless steel or matte black stainless steel.

Set your calendar in stone with Karst Stone Paper planners

Karst describes themselves as the world’s first stone paper stationery company.  They make a series of hardbound and paperbound Moleskine-like notebooks with paper made from recycled stone.  The notebooks are thread-bound and lay completely flat.  Writing on the paper is smooth because it lacks the grain directionality of normal paper.  Karst says their stone paper is brighter than regular paper, and it has a velvety smooth texture.  It’s waterproof and tear-resistant.  It’s friendlier to the environment than regular paper, as well.  Karst states that each metric ton of their paper saves 950kg of carbon from entering the atmosphere, 18 large timber trees, 4720 kilowatts of energy, and 2770 liters of water, compared to the manufacture of regular paper.  Both the bindings and the paper are recyclable, too. 

Karst has just launched their 2018 planner.  The notebook has weekly and monthly views, and Karst says each month has a “theme or focus for an all-rounded sense of achievement and development by the end of 2018. Each monthly theme has been carefully curated to work to help increase your productivity, goals, and overall fulfillment.”   Due to demand, expect your planner to ship in 4-5 weeks, so you should order now to have it in time for the new year.  The Karst 2018 Planner is $38.95.

More barware for the chemists from ThinkGeek

ThinkGeek had a set of Laboratory Shot Glasses some years ago that I just had to own.  The cute little set of beaker- and flask-shaped shot glasses are decorating my home office now.  ThinkGeek hasn’t let us chemistry nerds down, because they now have an Erlenmeyer Flask Martini Glasses Set that would be a great gift for any chemist, chemistry student, or The X-Files fan.  The set of four glasses have Erlenmeyer-shaped stems, each apparently filled with a different colored liquid, so guests will easily know which glass is theirs.  The glasses are made of silicate and borosilicate glass.  Each martini glass holds 12 ounces.  The Erlenmeyer Flask Martini Glass Set is $79.99 from ThinkGeek.

The WESN Titanium Micro Blade EDC Pocket Knife Keychain

What is it?
The WESN Titanium Micro Blade EDC Pocket Knife Keychain is a pocket knife that measures only 3.75 inches long when it’s fully deployed and a tiny eye squinting 2.24 inches long when it’s folded.

Why do I like it?
I like the WESN pocket knife because it’s a very well made knife that is a perfect addition to your EDC because it’s so small that it can fit on your keychain or in a pocket without feeling the extra weight. They sent me a sample and I have to tell you that this little guy is an over-engineered marvel. Even though it’s tiny, it feels great in hand. There are no sharp edges on the grade 5 Titanium handle, and the heat hardened steel blade is tiny but effective for all sorts of everyday chores like opening boxes. If you like tiny pocket knives, don’t miss this one.

Spoke Note

What is it?
A cool-looking, super tough, CNC-machined aluminum sticky note holder.

Why do I like them?
I think most sticky-note holders look boring and are poorly built—just hunks of injection-molded cheap plastic. Brian Conti, inventor, designer, maker and veteran of several successfully-launched brands and Kickstarter campaigns, felt the same way. When he couldn’t find anything better in the market, he designed and built his own, the Spoke Note. Spoke Note breaks that mold (pun intended). CNC machined from aircraft-grade aluminum, it looks tough and is tough. Its shape, style, and machined holes give it a cool an industrial vibe. Spoke Note holds a single 3-in x 3-in 100-sheet sticky note pad and has four “micro-suction” disc feet/pads, which can even allow it to be attached to many vertical surfaces. Do I need an over-built but cool-looking sticky-note holder? Probably not, but I sure do want this one.

The Kickstarter campaign just kicked off (pun intended again) and will end November 21, so there is still plenty of time to become a backer. Already as of this writing, the campaign still has 14 days to go and has already achieved surpassed its $1,000 funding goal with over $4,000 in pledges. What is it?

Why do I like it?
I like the B•A•T Trident because it’s a one-piece multi-tool that’s flat, which means it can fit in a pocket in your jeans or gear bag. This particular multi-tool has all the main tools that you want in an EDC tool. It offers the following functions:

Urban Kukri knife family

What is it?
The Kukri knife collection are eye-catching friction style folding knives that have been made by hand using basic tools by Ukrainian maker Konstantin Shaporenko.

Why do I like it?
I like the Kukri knives because they look more like a work of art or a sculpture than a cutting tool. But don’t get me wrong, they can still be used as an EDC knife that you can carry in a pocket or even wear around your neck if you opt for the tiny 30mm Kukri knife. They sent me a sample and I was very impressed with the workmanship and overall design of this knife.

NeoKeys – Low Profile Self Organizing Keys

What is it?
NeoKeys are narrow key blanks that have a magnet built into the top that keeps all the keys stacked and connected to reduce the size and key jingle.

Why do I like it?
I like NeoKeys because they shrink each individual key and add an embedded neodymium magnet. It’s a more elegant alternative to the MagKeys stick on magnets that I reviewed a couple of years ago. If you’re looking to downsize and simplify your key carry, this looks like the perfect way to do so.

The Apple Watch band with a Twist-O-Flex!

Gadgeteers of a certain age will surely remember Speidel watchbands.  I owned many Speidel expansion bands for various watches over the years.  I was recently pleasantly surprised to see that Speidel is making bands for the Apple Watch.  These retro-cool bands are made of stainless steel for high strength and resistance to water and sweat, which would make them suitable for workout wear, but they are sophisticated enough to fit in with a business suit.  The Speidel Twist-O-Flex band is available in small, medium, or large sizes for both the 38mm and the 42mm Watches, and they are available in satin black, silver aluminum, or brushed stainless finishes.
