IKEA is offering a connected home lighting kit and accessories

If you want to introduce an internet-connected home lighting kit for a reasonable price, and you don’t care about color-changing bulbs, you need to check out the Tradfri kit from IKEA.  Of course, these lights come with a smartphone app (Android Kitkat 4.4 or Lollipop 5.0 or Apple iOS 8 or later), and it’s Apple HomeKit compatible, but this kit also comes with a remote control so all members of the family can easily control the lights.

The kit includes a gateway, the previously-mentioned remote control, and two E26 standard-base LED white-spectrum light bulbs.  The included bulbs have 980 Lumen luminous flux at 2700K color temperature.  You’ll use the Tradfri app to create and control lighting groups for your home.  There are other bulbs that can be added to your home kit, including chandlier-base bulbs ($14.99), GU10 bulbs ($19.99), and 950 lumen clear-topped or 980 lumen frosted-top E26 ($17.99) bulbs.  IKEA doesn’t specify a maximum number of bulbs or lighting groups that you can add to your gateway.

The Tradfri Gateway Kit with two bulbs and a remote control is $79.99 at IKEA, with additional bulbs priced as shown above.  IKEA also offers dimming kits, motion-sensor kits, and other accessories for the Tradfri system.  The kit is available at IKEA stores or at the IKEA website.

The Velbon Ultra Stick Super 8 Monopod can stand on its own

As I continue to chase down that perfect but elusive travel tripod, I am coming across many products with great potential. Even if they do not exactly fit my search criteria, they certainly are interesting enough, and possibly fit another need that could win them a space in my gear bag.

The Velbon Ultra Stick Super 8 Monopod is exactly such an item. It is a seriously compact monopod that has an 8-section leg, and a simple twist lock system to extend or collapse the monopod. The beauty of this system is that it can lock at any point along the length of the leg, which makes it easy to obtain a very specific height. When collapsed, it is a super compact 10.2 inches, and when fully extended, it is 57.9 inches. Since it has a load capacity of 6.8 pounds, it should work well for use with DSLR and mirrorless cameras, as well as many video cameras. A monopod presents much more difficult when using a video camera, and especially so because of the lack of stability. However, I have used one for video with acceptable results. A wrist strap and a belt clip are included with the monopod. The belt clip will help with stability since the traditional flip-out legs are not a part of this design.

If you would like to check out the Velbon Ultra Stick Super 8 Monopod, you can head over to B&H Photo Video and take a look, or purchase one for $69.95.

The Misfit Path smartwatch will make you feel pretty

Let’s be honest, the vast majority of smartwatches are designed by and for men. I’m not saying all smartwatches have a bulky masculine style, but most do and it’s time to find a smartwatch that is smaller and more feminine. The Path Hybrid Smartwatch from Misfit looks like it fits that criteria.

Misfit is well known for their fitness and activity tracking wearables, and the Path Hybrid smartwatch won’t disappoint with its feature set. The watch includes fitness tracking features like steps walked, calories burned. sleep tracking, and movement alerts that will keep you from sitting too long.

The Path Hybrid is swim-proof and water resistant to 50 meters and is available in four color combinations including the rose gold and black stainless steel shown here. In addition to the fitness features, the watch also alerts you when you have an incoming call, text message, and app alerts. There’s even a button that you can program to play music, take a picture, and find your phone.

The Misfit Path watch will run for up to 6 months on a replaceable CR2025 battery, so you don’t have to worry about charging it each night like you have to do with other watches.

The watch is available now and is priced at $149.99. You can save an additional 25% off if you use the code PATH25 when you buy it from Misfit’s site. The discount code expires on 5/13/18.
