Florence is headed this way, and my thoughts have turned to emergency preparedness

NEWS – Here in North Carolina, we’ve experienced way too many hurricanes coming ashore over the years.  Florence seems to headed our way right now, and it’s time to think about laying in supplies in case we experience power outages and disturbances in other services.  The SolarPuff light would be a good light to have on hand in case of such emergencies, or it would be great to use for camping and other outdoor activities.

The SolarPuff is made of water-resistant and recyclable PET, so it’s suitable for indoor or outdoor use.  The small cube weighs 2.6 ounces and folds down to only 0.25″ thick, and it can be hung on a backpack with the solar panel exposed to charge the batteries.  Opened up, the SolarPuff can light up a 100 ft² room.  It has three modes: low, high, and flashing emergency light.  You can expect up to 12 hours of light from batteries that have had 12 hours of charging time.

It’s available in a soft-white version or a bright white version.  Each is $29.99 at Amazon.

Tiffany has just the thing to help you break your plastic straw habit

NEWS – We’ve seen some stainless straws you can carry with you to replace using plastic straws, but these metal straws from Tiffany & Co. take the cake.  Instead of stainless, Tiffany makes their straws from sterling silver.  Yep, sterling, and they certainly are priced like jewelry.

Up first is Tiffany’s version of a bendy straw.  Their Crazy Straw is available in sterling or gold vermeil (plated) versions; you’ll see the rose-gold vermeil version in the top image.  These straws are available in plain silver for $275 or in rose or yellow gold vermeil for $375 per straw.  Each of these straws have a decorative enamel band of Tiffany’s iconic blue color at the top.

A n0n-bendy version is also available.  The Ladybug Straw in sterling silver is a gently sloped straw, accented by a lady bug design.  This straw is $425.

All of these straws can be purchased at Tiffany & Co.

Protect your guitar from dust with a GhostCover

NEWS – My husband and daughter like to leave a guitar each sitting out on a stand, ready to play.  I’m fine with it, but I don’t like seeing the guitars collect dust.  After all, you can’t exactly dust them off with Pledge.  I’ve been thinking about making them a couple of dust covers to keep the guitars clean.  I thought about getting some thin, clear plastic sheeting to drape them, but I was afraid that stuff might stick to and ruin the finish.  I was looking around to see if anyone sold a pre-made drape when I came across GhostCovers.

GhostCovers are made of Tyvek, “a soft, breathable, tear-resistant non-woven fabric that out-performs vinyl”.  It resists dust, dirt, and liquid, so it should be capable of protecting a guitar sitting on a stand.  Tyvek has a neutral pH of 7, so it won’t interact with lacquers or other finishes on the instruments.  The covers are plain white, because adding color would affect the fabric’s breathability.

It has a fitted shape that won’t slide off the guitar.  It’s 40″ long, 11″ wide at the top, 17″ wide at the middle, and 20″ wide at the bottom, which should fit most any acoustic or electric guitar.

GhostCovers are $18.00, with free shipping from eBay.
