Instant Pot offers two products for sous vide cooking

NEWS – Back in the summer, we told you about a Wolf multi-function cooker that had sous vide cooking as one of its functions.  One reader asked why her Instant Pot couldn’t do sous vide.  It’s because Instant Pots are pressure cookers and are designed to cook under steam at high temperatures and pressures instead of holding water at a constant temperature below the boiling point for the long times needed for sous vide cooking.  Well, Instant Pot pressure cookers still can’t sous vide cook, but the company now offers two Instant Pot-branded devices that can.

First up is the Instant Pot 8-qt Aura Pro Multi-Use Programmable Multicooker with Sous Vide (seen above).  This isn’t a traditional Instant Pot.  Instead, like the Wolf Multi-function cooker, it is more a slow cooker than a pressure cooker.  In addition to sous vide cooking, this multicooker can sear/sauté, bake, slow cook, steam, stew, roast, make yogurt, cook rice or multigrains, and keep warm.  It has a microprocessor to control the time and temperature to ensure consistent cooking results.  The Instant Pot 8-qt Aura Pro Multi-Use Programmable Multicooker with Sous Vide is $149.95 at Amazon.

Next is the Instant Pot SSV800 Accu Slim Sous Vide Immersion Circulator, which looks and functions like another immersion sous vide cooker (Aicok SV-8001 Sous Vide Cookerreviewed by The Gadgeteer recently.  While you can use the inner pot from the 6- or 8-quart Instant Pot, it doesn’t require an Instant Pot at all.  You can use it with any pot or vessel that allows the circulator to be clamped to its side.  In fact, most sous vide circulators I’ve seen seem to require vessels that hold at least 12 quarts, so the Instant Pot inner pots seem a bit small.  The Instant Pot SSV800 Accu Slim Sous Vide Immersion Circulator  is $79.95 at Amazon.

GORUCK launches GR2 26L, a smaller option for travel or EDC

NEWS – It began with the GR2, a large 40L ruck (AKA backpack) that GORUCK designed and built for travel (but also great for EDC).  A few years later, the GR2 34L arrived, a slightly smaller, shorter ruck for folks of lesser height and frame who really wanted to use the GR2, but found the 40L version a bit cumbersome.  Now, the trifecta is complete (?) with GORUCK’s recent launch of their GR2 26L, an even smaller and shorter ruck for the smallest-stature fans of the GR2.  The GR2 26L is the same volume capacity as GORUCK’s original flagship and most popular ruck.  As with all of GORUCK’s gear and especially their rucks, the new GR2 26L is built in the USA with military-grade materials—such as 1000D Cordura and high-strength webbing—and the GR2 series includes a load of compartments and pockets that are super useful for securely organizing your gear, clothing, and other items.  As an owner of a GR2 34L that I’ve been using for one-bag travel for a few years now, I’m excited about this 26L version, especially for folks that found the 34L a bit too large for their liking.  The GR2 26L retails for $495 and includes the GORUCK SCARS Lifetime Warranty.  Visit GORUCK.com for more info or to order.

Add light and some outer space to your room with this light fixture

NEWS – This semi-flush mount light fixture is perfect for the ceiling of any aficionado of astronomy or sci-fi.  The ceiling canopy of the ELK Astronaut light fixture is black with star and planet designs.  The light fixture itself has three bulbs: one 60W standard bulb behind the glass bottom of the “space ship” to provide downlighting, and two candelabra bulbs for the engine flames.

The two astronauts out for a little space walk are purely decorative.  The ship has a satin nickel finish.  It measures 16″ wide and hangs 10″ from the ceiling.  The ELK Astronaut light fixture is $190.00 at Amazon.

Become Gandalf or Morgan from The Walking Dead with the PocketStaff

NEWS – This collapsible pocket staff/cane looks a whole cooler than it really is, but for less than $25 bucks (a whole lot less depending on where you buy one), this “magic” item might earn you some extra geek points. What is it? It’s a thin metal telescoping tube that extends into a 43-inch long staff and then shrinks back down into a fist-sized form factor that makes it perfect for close up magic tricks.

Made of thin stainless steel, the PocketStaff pops out with the press of a button. Just be careful where you’re pointing it and then also be careful when you collapse it back down because the comments on Amazon mention that the edges are really sharp.

Is the PocketStaff an effective weapon against zombies or hoards of orcs? Doubtful. If you check out the video below, you can see that it looks pretty flimsy. But it’s that pop out effect that you’re looking for right?

You can find the PocketStaff at outdoorlancastor.com for $24.95 and on Amazon for about $11. And just remember that it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
