LE iLUX Smart LED Flood Light review

REVIEW – It seems like everywhere you turn nowadays everything is going “RGB”, LED, or connected. I thought maybe these LE iLUX Smart LED Flood Lights might make a nice addition to my computer setup. Read on to find out if they worked out.

What is it?

The LE iLUX Smart LED Flood Light is a 10 watt LED light that is IP65 waterproof, and can be controlled by the included remote or via their smartphone app.

What’s in the box?

  • 3 LE iLUX Smart LED Flood Lights
  • Remote control
  • Remote control instructions
  • Light instructions

Design and features

The LE iLUX Smart LED Flood Lights come in a three pack, with an included remote. The box was deceptively small as they did not include much protective material, probably because these lights are built like a tank. I thought the remote was a nice touch, as some companies just rely on smartphone apps lately. The lights are controlled via bluetooth.

The case of the lights is an aluminum alloy and appears to be extremely durable and well built. The lights also have a bracket/stand on the back that already has holes in it to make mounting them to a surface much easier.

The power cord is heavy duty, almost too stiff as it made the lights hard to stand upright. They would be best mounted to a small board as a base. I was disappointed to see that the power cords were only 30″ long. It really should have at least a 4 to 6-foot cord. The LED’s have a 50,000 hour rating.

The lights support 16 million colors, with 8 preset dynamic editable light modes. There is also a dynamic lighting mode which can change the light color between single color, 3 color, 7 color, or random color changes. There is a setting for gradual change or direct change (instant) as well as a speed setting for the change delay.

One thing I really liked was the ability to group lights and control those groups individually. Changing the brightness, color, and on/off for an entire group of lights at one time.

The iLux Mesh smartphone app is really nice. It’s simple to use and does just about everything you would want to do with these lights.

The included remote has quite a few buttons including 4 group buttons that turn on and off a group of lights. One nice thing I found with the remote was that it has glow-in-the-dark buttons! When you just want to turn the lights on or off you don’t need to find the app on your smartphone, you can simply press a button on the remote.

My thought when I accepted this review was to use them as backlighting for my computer setup and possibly for accent lighting for photography shoots. Although they’re great for backlighting on my computer, they’re not quite bright enough for use in most photography setups – although I’ll probably use them occasionally.

The following photos were taken outside. I was hoping for a little snow, but we didn’t get but a dusting. Taking photos of lights is actually pretty tricky, but I tried to get as close to what I was actually seeing. You can somewhat compare the brightness of them to the porch light that is on the left side.

What I like

  • Smartphone app
  • Remote Control
  • Thin
  • Sturdy

What needs to be improved

  • Short power cord
  • Power cord comes out of the bottom too far

Final thoughts

These lights work well despite the shortcomings of a short cord. They’re plenty bright enough for outdoor accent lighting and will add a nice touch to your landscape or holiday lighting.

Price: $67.99 (set of three)

Sengled Element Color Plus Smart LED Bulb review

REVIEW – Who says you can’t do professional-style interior lighting on a reasonable budget? The Sengled Element Color Plus smart bulbs enable you to manage your interior lighting from your smartphone with complete control of color, warmth, and brightness. We’re already fans of the Sengled Element Smart Lighting system, and this addition makes it even better! So many colors to choose… let’s set the mood!

What is it?

It’s a new addition to the Sengled smart bulb family of products that offers 16 million customizable color options and tunable brightness levels.

Hardware specs

Bulbs:

  • 8.6 W, 60 hz
  • 4.3” by 2.4” (standard socket size)
  • 800 lumens, 2700 K Color Temperature
  • Dimmable with app
  • 200 degree beam angle
  • 25,000 hour lifetime

Hub:

  • 3.07” by 1.02”
  • 2.4 GHz
  • 120 foot range
  • 64 bulb management capacity

What’s in the box?

My test kit is the Smart LED Starter Kit. It contains two color bulbs, the hub (with power adaptor), and an Ethernet cable.

Design and features

Back in May, I reviewed the Sengled Element Classic Smart Bulb and found it to be an excellent way to get started with smart lighting in your home. Because Sengled’s product lineup is designed to work as an integrated system, the new Element Color Plus can be added to your existing setup or installed as a standalone system.

If you’re doing a standalone setup, the process exactly the same: you’ll load the app on your phone and follow the setup wizard to connect the hub to your network, then to connect your bulbs. Once you have everything loaded, you’ll identify the locations and light fixtures where you’ll place your bulbs. Check out my original review for a detailed breakdown of the process.

If you already have a Sengled setup installed, you have options. You can add the new hub as a second device controlled by your current app, or just add the bulbs to your existing hub. The app wizard walks you through the process either way, but we did find a neat trick that you can use if you’re just adding new bulbs to your current setup. Each bulb has a QR code on it so that you can scan it in the app and add it to your existing hub without keying in long access codes! Check out the screenshot below:

Once you have them added, you have all the same features for general lighting management that you do for plain white bulbs: adjusting brightness, monitoring power consumption, scheduling when the lights go on and off, etc. As I detailed in my previous review it’s all very intuitive and easy to use.

Here’s a bulb that we added to the system for my son’s bedroom. You can set general parameters for brightness and color temperature and manage to turn it on and off from the app:

You can also set schedules for when the light will be on, creating different events like the “Wake up time” shown below:

Color management is where the new fun begins. Tap the “color” setting, and you get a full-color palette to play with. You can also alter the whiteness setting to fit the mood:

There are 16 million possible color combinations along with the ability to tune your white light brightness & color temperatures from a soft candlelight (or nightlight) setting to full daylight (2000K-6500K). Color changes go into effect instantly and can be set as part of your scheduled events. Here are some examples of the difference when you tweak the color temperature and overall brightness:

Then we added some color. I chose a pink shade for this pic.

This is more of a green/cyan color:

As you start playing with combinations, you quickly realize that you can completely change the mood of the room with a few taps. Bright party lighting, subdued night lighting, fun colors for a child’s playroom, soft tones for that *ahem!* romantic dinner… the possibilities are endless.

You could also set up a room with multiple bulbs. We set up two bulbs in one lamp for this example. The lower bulb is set to “night light” mode, and the upper bulb for more of a daytime/wake up lighting. We also named them “Night light” and “Bedroom light” to set individual schedules for use:

We also paired the lights with Alexa. She recognizes the different light names so that you can use voice commands to manage the lighting such as “Alexa, turn the bedroom light on!” or “Alexa, make the night light green!” It will work with Google Assistant as well, although we did not try that with this test. Sengled provides a full list of third-party compatibility options on their website for more details.

Here’s the nice thing about the Sengled Element system: you don’t need to buy a full kit if you want to add to your existing network. Each Element hub has a range of 120 feet and can manage up to 64 bulbs, which gives you a lot of room to work with. Sengled now offers 4 bulb styles in the Element series (soft white, daylight, tunable white, and the color bulb we’re reviewing here) that are all fully compatible with the hub, enabling you to expand your setup as you like without buying new hardware. I like that flexibility.

What I like

  • Easy setup
  • Excellent app for managing, controlling, and scheduling lighting functions
  • Fully compatible with existing Element systems
  • Brilliant color options, with a range of brightness and tone
  • Extensible without adding new hardware

What needs to be improved

  • Check the full specs on Sengled’s website for compatibility with third-party network systems

Final thoughts

We’re fans of the Sengled Element Smart Lighting system, and the addition of the Element Color Plus adds even more options with brilliant color and brightness control. With a few clicks, you can paint any room in your house with colors and tones to match your mood and style. Not only is it easy to use, but its price point makes for a very affordable (and expandable) smart lighting solution for your home.

Price: The Color Plus Kit retails for $79.99, and includes two bulbs and a hub. You can buy additional color bulbs for $29.99 each. A four pack of color bulbs with a hub is also available for $139.99.
Where to buy: Check ’em out on the Sengled Element web page. You’ll also find them on Amazon.

Sengled Element Classic Smart Bulb review

So you’re thinking about dipping into smart home technologies, but want to start simple. The Sengled Element Classic may be just the thing for you. It’s easy to use, sets up in minutes, and is a remarkably inexpensive solution to creating a smart lighting solution for your home. Let’s get illuminated!

What is it?

It’s a smart bulb lighting kit that you control from your smartphone, Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant.

Hardware specs

Bulbs:

  • 9 W, 60 hz
  • 4.41” by 2.42” (standard socket size)
  • 800 lumens, 2700 K Color Temperature
  • Dimmable with app
  • 240 degree beam angle
  • 25,000 hour lifetime

Hub:

  • 3.07” by 1.02”
  • 2.4 GHz
  • 120 foot range
  • 64 bulb management capacity

What’s in the box?

You get two soft-white controllable bulbs, the Element wireless hub, and a power adaptor for the hub. There’s also a network cable to get connected for the setup process.

Design and features

The Sengled Element Classic Starter Kit gives you everything you need to get started with basic smart lighting. The Element hub, when set up on your network, pairs with the bulbs. The app on your smartphone controls the bulb functions. We’ll walk through the setup process and controls in the following sections.

Setup

Setup begins with downloading the “Sengled Element Home” app on your iOS or Android mobile device. You’ll need to create an account with Sengled to get started, after which the app will all you through the setup process.

The bulbs that come with my test sample (the “Classic”) are 2 soft-white LED bulbs. While a bit heavier than typical LED bulbs, they have the same form factor and fit in standard lamp sockets. Sengled offers 4-bulb packs, daylight bulbs, tunable daylight/soft bulbs, and multicolor bulbs on their website if you want to get fancy.

The setup process is very straightforward. You’ll plug the hub directly into your router with the Ethernet cable provided in the kit. Power it up, follow the instructions on the app to pair the hub to your network (you’ll need your network password), and the app will let you know when you’re all connected. You then go to the app to identify the locations of your bulbs in the house.

Once you have set up the connection, you can go fully wireless with the hub. Disconnect it from the router, find a discrete place to plug it in, and you’re good to go. It’s a tiny thing at 1” by 3”, so you can tuck it just about anywhere. See it hiding on one of our hallway display shelves below, behind the Flying Dutchman and Mickey…

It’s important to note that the Sengled setup has limited compatibility with third party hubs. I have the Deco mesh network set up in my house, and I could not plug the hub into one of the remote pods to set it up. Once I finished initial setup at the router, however, I switch back to my mesh network on my smartphone to manage things from the app. You can connect the Sengled system to Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, but these configurations were not tested for this review. You should check out the Sengled web site to learn more about compatibility before purchasing.

Performance

As you set up the app, you’ll identify the room(s) where your bulbs are located. I put both mine in the living room for purposes of the test. Your home screen on the app now serves as your master control:

You can also manage your individual bulbs from the app, providing custom names for each bulb. You can expand your setup to include additional bulbs or hubs as well:

Once established, the app provides monitoring you can use to measure power performance across the setup or at the individual bulb level:

Once you’re in business, you can use the app to power on/off all the Sengled bulbs in a room, including dimmer functions. Here I’m turning everything on at once:

You can also control individual bulbs in the room. Tap on the “Bulbs” button, and you give each bulb a custom name for easy management. You can turn them on and off individually from this screen. Here I went in and turned off the bar lamp for purposes of demonstration:

You can also tap the name of the bulb to set individual dimming. The first pic below is both lights at 100% brightness, while the second shows the couch lamp being dimmed to about 20% brightness. (I should note that the couch lamp has a darker shade to begin with.)

In addition to on-demand control, you have the ability to schedule the lighting by room by tapping the “advanced” button. Here you can set a wake up time to turn the lights on, or two different scheduled events. This includes a start time, end time, brightness, and what days of the week to repeat the function. With two scheduled events available, this means that you could set multiple events for a single room if desired.

It’s important to note that the scheduled event either happens on the day it is set, or is repeated each day that you select in the interface. You cannot schedule for a specific date range, like a vacation.

According to Sengled a single hub can support 64 bulbs. I don’t imagine needing an additional hub unless you’re pushing the 120 foot range of the hub itself.

Setup with Alexa and Google Assistant also looks pretty simple but, as I mentioned, there’s limited compatibility with other hub networks. Advanced kits are offered that support Xfinity Home and Cox Homelife. Again, check the Sengled web site to make sure that the Sengled will work with your home setup.

What I like

  • Quick and easy to set up
  • Simple, clean app interface
  • Scheduling features

What needs to be improved

  • Limited compatibility with third party hubs
  • Would like to see a date-specific scheduling function for trips

Final thoughts

At $39.99, the Sengled LED Classic Smart Bulb system looks like a great deal to set up some basic smart lighting for your home. It’s easy to set up and use, and has options to expand beyond the basic kit for about $10 per additional bulb. There are a ton of options available in the form of advanced hubs and bulbs if you want to go beyond the basics. You’ll also want to check compatibility with existing systems if you’ve already started investing in smart home technologies.

Price: $39.99

Turn a single-bulb garage or basement light socket into a motion-activated light

My previous house had those old-style ceramic, single-bulb ceiling light fixtures in the basement.  There were three of them in about a 1000 ft² area, and two of them could only be turned on with those pull-chains.  If I had seen these Motion Activated Garage Lights while I lived there, I could have converted that dark, dangerous area into a light-filled area simply by walking down the stairs.

You just screw one of these lights into the bulb socket – you don’t need to replace the ceiling fixture or add any special wiring.  The three LED light panels can be adjusted to direct light where it’s needed.  They produce 3000 lumens of light while using only 25W of electricity; that’s 3.8 times the light of a 60W bulb while using less than half the electricity.  The LEDs are rated for 50,000 hours of use.

If you just want the extra light but can easily control the fixture with a switch, the motion detector can be turned off.  The fixture is only for indoor use, but it can be used in basements, garages, attics, or wherever you need extra light.  The Motion Activated Garage Light is $129.99 at The Sharper Image.
