REVIEW – I am definitely a firm advocate for the use of screen protectors, going back to the cr@ppy thin plastic films I applied on my Palm Vx. I even pressure many friends and family members to use them. I even go so far as to supply and apply them…obsessive, compulsive I know. Today’s multilayer, precision-crafted tempered glass screen protectors do an incredible job protecting your smartphones and have become impressively inexpensive/cost-effective to use. For this review, totallee has sent me their new edge-to-edge screen protector for the iPhone Xs Max to see how it compares to an insanely crowded field of competition.
BACKSTORY – I’ve reviewed and used all types of tempered glass screen protectors over the years, ranging in price from $2 all the way up to an eye popping $50+. The one you see in this picture is a generic one I purchased from Amazon.com for all of 3 for $10. I’ve had it on my iPhone Xs Max since day one and it has done a fine enough job…though thankfully never truly tested. But as you can see, it doesn’t cover the entire screen, sitting several millimeters off all four of the edges. I actually felt bad taking it off, more or less destroying it in the process, to do this review…hopefully this totallee edge to edge screen protector makes it worth the effort/carnage .
What is it?
This totallee screen protector is an edge to edge piece of tempered glass, engineered specifically for the iPhone Xs Max.
What’s in the box?
Tempered glass screen protector
Installation card
Alcohol prep pad
Cleaning cloth
Design and features
As I mentioned, this screen protector is made from a very thin (0.33mm) sheet of glass that has been precisely cut to fit over the entirety of the iPhone’s OLED screen. Other than its edge-to-edge fit, the only two design features of note are the speaker cutout at the top and 2(ish) millimeter black band encircling protector’s edge.
Setup
Installing the totallee screen protector was easy enough. You more or less lineup the speaker cutout and sides correctly and then let go (see video here). Though like any glass screen protector, you have to be careful to not have or let any bits of dust sneak between the two pieces of glass during installation. I did have to use scotch tape to remove a few myself and the screen protector withstood the force of me lifting an edge or two several times to get it perfect. The only thing I might suggest is that totallee include an installation tray which would help place the screen protector more precisely since it is so exactly fitted. If you’re off just a fraction of a millimeter, you may need to reseat the thin sheet of glass which could break or get dust under it.
The totallee screen protector fits the iPhone Max perfectly. The black bezel makes the screen protector almost disappear (much more so than the previous one I had on my smartphone).
The totallee is relatively thin, thinner than some other tempered glass screen protectors I have used in the past. There has been no impact to screen sensitivity or FaceID accuracy.
Performance
While I haven’t tested its strength, hardness, or protection factor, the totallee screen protector is doing a perfectly fine job protecting my screen. It marks off all the typical boxes for a tempered glass screen protector these days: completely clear, extremely thin, 9H hardness rating, and oleophobic coating. Add in the fact it covers the entire screen, the totallee screen protector does not disappoint.
What I like
Perfectly fitted for the iPhone Xs Max
Edge-to-edge protection
Easy to install
Oleophobic coating
What needs to be improved
Expensive
Lacks installation tray
totallee makes tempered glass screen protectors for a multitude of smartphones, ranging from the Pixel 2 to the latest and greatest iPhone Xs Max. They offer a 30-day money back guarantee and 2 year warranty on all their gear.
Final thoughts
With countless screen protectors under $10 on Amazon, justifying a $25 screen protector is pretty tough these days. That said, the totallee tempered glass screen protector certainly isn’t the most expensive one on the market either. totallee has created a very well done, nicely thought out iPhone Xs Max accessory that does an excellent job protecting your $1000+ smartphone. With its edge-to-edge design and oleophobic coating, you hardly know it’s there while providing solid protection.
Price: $25 Where to buy: The totallee tempered glass screen protector is available directly from their website and Amazon Source: The sample of this product was provided by totallee.

REVIEW – I have reviewed and used many Vaja cases over the years to protect everything from my MacBook Pro to my iPhones. Admittedly I prefer to use my smartphones naked but kept the black Leather Suit on my 15″ MacBook Pro till the day I sold it. That also goes for several iPads as well. In this case, Vaja sent me their Grip GT for my fancy new iPhone Xs Max for this review.
What is it?
The Grip GT is a handcrafted iPhone Xs Max case made from premium Argentine leather and designed to protect your smartphone from bumps, scratches, and falls.
Design and features
The Grip GT has a rigid polycarbonate “backbone” that Vaja craftsmen wrap in soft, supple leather from Argentina. The case is perfectly fitted for the iPhone Xs Max as you would expect from such a premium smartphone case. The interior is lined with a soft, smooth leather that’s been embossed with the Vaja name. What makes the GT different from its less exciting sibling (the original Grip), is the racing stripe running down the center of its back. This quote from the Grip GT webpage says it all:
At Vaja Cases we love speed and sports cars, meet the new Grip GT iPhone Xs Max leather case. Designed for those Adventurous souls who like style, leather, and fast cars.
Specifications:
Designed for the iPhone Xs Max Leather Case
Apple certified – Qi wireless charging compatible
Hard polycarbonate backbone
Black-framed camera eyelet
Weight: 0.07 lb / 30 gr
Premium Leather Lining
The case completely wraps around and protects the corners and nearly all of the top of the iPhone Xs Max. I’m not sure why Vaja chose to have the top not cover the entire top edge of the smartphone. The Grip works nicely with the screen protector I have applied to my iPhone.
The base of the case has a large cutout allowing access to the Xs Max’s lighting port and speakers. As you can see, the Grip fits the iPhone like a glove, wrapping around the edges and corners perfectly. The case extends a few millimeters above the screen, providing extra protection for those crazy individuals who place their very expensive smartphones face down.
The left side of the case has a single cutout for the iPhone’s volume buttons and mute switch.
The right side has a smaller cutout for the power button. Overall, the case provides solid protection from bumps, scrapes, and drops.
As I mentioned above, the Grip GT is handcrafted with premium Argentine leather. The black leather has a pebbled texture to it with the brown center stripe being smoother, combining for an excellent feel. I typically use my devices without a case but I find Vaja’s leather difficult to give up. Truth be told, I have been using the Grip for a month now and have yet to remove it. Its craftsmanship and construction quality are excellent.
From a thickness standpoint, the Vaja Grip GT does add 3 or 4 millimeters to the height of the thin device. The plastic around the camera assembly is the only evidence of the rigid polycarbonate backbone/case. The case recesses the camera and provides excellent protection for the assembly.
The bottom of the back has a black powder-coated metal plate. The inside of the plate and case are completely lined with leather to make sure your iPhone’s polished stainless steel edges aren’t scratched. I think the engraved plate with the cutout of the Vaja logo showing the tan leather underneath looks awesome…a very nice detail.
The Grip GT is available in Floater Black and Saddle Bridge tan, Floater Black and C Rosso, and Floater Black and C Black coloring.
One more thing…Wallet LP Leather Case:
Vaja also sent me their Wallet LP case to check out as well. The LP is very similar to the Grip but with a front wallet that folds over to cover the screen. It has 4 slots meant to hold your I.D. plus 3 credit or other cards. There is also a slipper pocket for stashing money bills.
Also, like the GT, the LP has a sportier look than Vaja’s regular wallet iPhone case. The main body of the case uses a pebbled leather over the polycarbonate backbone with smoother leather used on the wallet flap.
Specifications:
iPhone Xs Max Wallet Leather Case
Apple certified – Qi wireless charging compatible
Hard Polycarbonate backbone
Black-framed camera eyelet
4 credit card slots (RFID Protected)
Optional 925 silver accents
1 extra slot for folded bills
Available in Bridge with Floater Leather
Premium Leather Lining
Product Weight: 0.17 lb / 75 gr
The wallet cover does add thickness to the iPhone but considering it combines two articles into one seems like a fair trade. The cover does add additional protection for the iPhone’s screen.
The Wallet LP is available in Floater Stone Gray and Saddle tan, Floater Black and Saddle Bridge tan, and Floater Crown Blue and Bridge London coloring.
Positives
Perfectly fitted for the iPhone Xs Max
Excellent craftsmanship and leather quality
Provides solid protection
Feels very nice in the hand
Negatives
Expensive
Final thoughts
I really like both the Grip GT and Wallet LP cases for the iPhone Xs Max. Their craftsmanship, fine leather, and quality are extremely nice and a true pleasure to hold. They provide solid protection with stylish, sporty looks. The premium Argentine leather gives the slippery iPhone much better grip-ability and old world feel. I’m sticking with the Grip GT cause the Wallet LP simply can’t hold all the cr@p I have to have with me on any given day. And like I said, I’m typically not one for using a case but so far the Grip GT continues to keep my attention and that says something .
Price: $109 (Grip GT) / $169 (Wallet LP) Where to buy: The Grip GT and Wallet LP are available directly from Vaja.com. Source: The sample of this product was provided by Vaja.com.

REVIEW – As some of you may have read, Julie and I purchased and reviewed Apple’s latest and greatest smartphone, the iPhone Xs Max. And where Julie returned hers, I continue to love using mine with zero buyers regret. Even though I got AppleCare Plus, I hesitate using the Max without protection (aka naked). The iPhone X(s) is slippery and very droppable, the Max’s larger form factor makes it even more so. From the beginning, I’ve debated case vs skin vs nothing but a screen protector. For this review, I am trying out a handmade leather skin from Jamie Clawson’s workshop in black cowhide.
What is it?
The leather skin is made from a single piece of leather that adheres to the back of your iPhone adding protection and grippability to the very slick piece of metal and glass.
Design and features
The leather skin is handmade, laser cut, and fits the back of iPhone Xs perfectly. The skin protects the Max’s very expensive to replace glass back.
The adhesive Jamie uses is made by 3M “specifically for our products”. Installing the skin is quick (less than a minute) and easy. And as I said, the leather is perfectly sized/shaped for the iPhone.
The skin is surprisingly thick, approximately 1/4 the thickness of the iPhone Xs itself. My fear is that the high edge of the leather will catch on something or the constant taking the phone in and out of my pocket will cause the edges of the skin will stop sticking/fail. Unlike Slickwraps and Brandb skins much longer warranties, Jamie only provides a 7-day guarantee against defects vs any sort of failure to adhere.
There is no way you could put your iPhone into a case with this skin on…or at least not a very form-fitted one. Supposedly you can remove and reapply it as long as you keep the sticky side clean and schmutz-free. I will be testing this out in the next few weeks, I have several cases inbound where I will have to remove this skin when I start my reviews.
The leather skin feels great on my iPhone Xs Max and adds solid grippability to the sleek and slim device. I was a bit worried the height of the leather being an issue or irritating but surprisingly its not. Based on how I hold my iPhone, other than feeling the leather, the edge doesn’t really affect the form factor of the smartphone when in use.
What I like
Precision fitted for the iPhone
Made from high quality leathers
Adds excellent feel and grippability to the slippery device.
Protects the iPhone’s glass back
What needs to be improved
Surprisingly thick
No warranty
Here you can see just how handmade and personal Jamir Clawson’s products are…right down to the handwritten note thanking me for my order (to the best of my knowledge, he had no idea I was planning on reviewing it ).
Jamie Clawson makes his skins out of a multitude of leathers including genuine premium cowhide, calf, crocodile, ostrich, pony hair, python, stingray, etc.
Final thoughts
I have been using Jamie’s leather skin for a few weeks now and it continues to get the job done. The edges remain firmly stuck to the glass back of my iPhone Xs Max. And while the skin provides minimal overall protection, it does add grippability and provides decent protection for the back of the smartphone. With it, a tempered glass screen protector, a sure set of hands, and AppleCare Plus…I believe my fancy new $1500 tech-toy, not only feels as Jony Ives intended but is protected enough to face my hectic go, go, go lifestyle.

REVIEW – You just spent $1249 on an iPhone Xs Max and you want to protect your investment from everyday wear and tear without making it look like a plastic shrouded brick. When it comes to iPhone Xs Max cases, there are mediocre iPhone Xs Max cases and then there are Mujjo iPhone Xs Max cases.
What is it?
The Mujjo iPhone Xs Max Full Leather case and Full Leather Wallet cases are cases that have been designed exclusively for the iPhone Xs Max and are made of high quality materials.
Design and features
The Mujjo Full Leather case is a molded form-fitting vegetable tanned smooth leather case that is available in green, tan, gray, and black and it provides protection to the back and sides of the iPhone Xs Max without adding bulk or a dose of ugly.
The case is lined in a soft microfiber material that protects the back of the iPhone from scratches, fingerprints, and adds some thickness around the camera lens to protect it too.
This case adds extra protection for the sides, back, and even the display with an extra 1mm tall bezel around the screen, all without adding a lot of additional bulk and weight.
Instead of cutouts for the buttons on both sides of the phone, the buttons are molded into the case itself. The look is nice, but it does require a little extra effort to press each button.
The top edge of the case is fully covered, but the bottom of the case has a large opening that leaves the speakers and lightning port uncovered.
The Mujjo Full Leather case is comfortable in hand and offers almost everything you need in a high-end leather iPhone case… well almost everything.
That’s where the Mujjo Full Leather Wallet case comes in. It’s the same case as the Full Leather case, except it’s a wallet too.
Sewn into the back of the case is a credit card-sized slot that holds 1 or 2 standard sized plastic credit cards.
The credit card holder does add some extra bulk, but it doesn’t interfere with charging the phone on a Qi wireless charger, even if you have a card in the slot.
What I like
Molded form-fitting design
Wallet case doesn’t interfere with wireless chargers
Easy to put on and remove
What needs to be improved
Buttons are harder to press when the phone is not in a case
Final thoughts
When you’ve spent more than a grand on a smartphone, protecting that phone from scratches, scuffs, fingerprints, and smudges is most likely a priority. One way to do that is to buy a case for the phone, but plastic cases are boring and ugly, so consider a nice looking and affordable leather case from Mujjo.
Price: $43.42 – $53.08 Where to buy: Mujjo and Amazon Source: The sample for this review was provided by Mujjo.

ARTICLE – Each fall, Apple introduces their newest iPhone that I will drool over, order, and then a few weeks later I return to Apple for a full refund. At least that’s been the way things have gone for me the past few years, unlike my good buddy Dave Rees who told Android to see ya later back in 2016 and hasn’t looked back since.
Dave: “…few years…”??? Julie & I sometimes joke about one of the definitions of insanity is doing the exact same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I wouldn’t say I never look back, I regularly check out the latest and greatest Android devices, on occasion severely tempted. But the reality is, I truly love Apple’s hardware and for the most part, fully embrace the iOS/macOS ecosystem.
Julie: Dave and I regularly talk about Apple’s new tech and he’s always giving me a hard time about my inability to what he calls “fully embracing the iPhone”. We’ve both had our shiny new iPhone Xs Max 256GB Space Gray phones for almost a week now, so we thought we’d do another tag team post.
First of all, we should let everyone know that our iPhones actually traveled together on what was most certainly the same flight from China to Alaska and then to our respective states last week. We kept texting each other with our UPS status updates because we.are.geeks.
Dave: Don’t forget about Korea and Kentucky. It was pretty funny when it became very clear our iPhones were sharing an international cab ride. Due to Apple’s just-in-time shipping this year, I was a little worried we wouldn’t see our fancy new tech-toys until the following week. The expected delivery date kept waffling between Friday the 21st and Monday the 24th. Thankfully both arrived safe and on time (and OMG would Julie have had to listen to me whine if she received hers 3 days before me).
Dave: The build and material quality of the iPhone X series of smartphones is impressive, to say the least. The stainless steel casing sandwiched between sheets of glass give the Xs devices an excellent high-quality heft.
Julie: I agree that the look and feel of the Xs Max are impressive. However, I’m unsure about having a glass backed phone because I feel like it’s tempting fate not to use a case with this phone. If you’re like me and don’t like cases either, you’re going to want to pony up for the Apple Care insurance which will provide some peace of mind while scraping even more money out of your wallet. That is if you have any money left after buying the Xs Max because Xs really does mean excess with a price tag of $1249 for the 256GB version of the Max. What the what?! Crazy stupid spendy. But we still spent it didn’t we?
Dave: Yes, yes we did…at midnight within the first few minutes after the Apple store coming back online. Once again texting each other the status of our ordering, cause, we.are.geeks . The Max plus tax and AppleCare Plus lightened my tech-slushfund nearly $1600. As I told Julie, twice as much as my first car. Crazy indeed.
Dave: I purchased the original iPhone X a year ago and enjoyed using it the entire time. In addition to build and material quality, its near bezel-less OLED screen and form factor was extremely nice as well. It was great having a Plus sized screen in a regular iPhone body. I got pretty used to the X’s size and do admit I was a bit worried about the Max’s larger size. Now that I have used the Xs Max for about a week, it doesn’t feel all that huge. The added volume and weight are well worth the Max’s gorgeous 6.5″ OLED screen.
Julie: I didn’t have any qualms about ordering the larger Xs Max because a quick scan of the specs told me that it was almost exactly the same size as my Pixel 2 XL which I’ve been using close to a year now. Upon receipt of the iPhone, I wasn’t surprised by the size and had no issues adjusting to it. But what I did notice right away was how much heavier the Max is compared to the Pixel 2 XL. Dave says that means it’s got more quality. I just think it’s heavier, but I do agree that that the iPhone is very well made and wow, that display is so pretty. It is noticeably nicer looking than my Pixel 2 XL’s display.
Dave: The larger screen was truly the selling point for me. I could have easily muddled thru with the original iPhone X. But my hope was to use the Max as not only my smartphone but as an iPad replacement as well. I travel a good deal for my day job and with each trip, I would have to debate what tech to take based on time on the plane, length of the trip, and what I needed to get accomplished while away. The iPhone Xs Max’s screen is not only beautiful but immersive too. Even the Gadgeteer Kid didn’t complain when we watch videos together while killing a bit of time. While I haven’t had to travel during the first week of ownership, I do plan on taking just it on my next cross-country travel for my media consumption needs. Reducing my load to just my work laptop & iPhone.
Julie: Having enjoyed a Pixel 2 XL for so long, adjusting to a display without an always-on feature has been tough. I rely on that feature all the time because my phone is also my clock and I use my phone as my alarm clock on my nightstand. Being able to glance over in the middle of the night to see the time is very convenient. It’s also convenient to see notification icons without having to pick up the phone or press a button. And another screen feature that I miss that the iPhone doesn’t have is the song title display when music is playing. I use that feature ALL the time.
Julie: I was also bummed that the rumor that Apple was ditching the lightning connector in favor of a USB-C connector turned out to be false.
Dave: I was a bit disappointed as well. With the rumored 2018 iPad Pros due within weeks, it would have been the perfect time for Apple to go all-in with USB-C. That said, we have MANY lightning cables laying around our home. So for us at least, we’ll be able to hold out until Apple sees the light.
Dave: The new speaker design is a definite improvement over past generation iPhones. The stereo sound is clear, loud, and detailed. They can easily fill a decent sized room with sound and watching a movie is easily as nice as on an iPad.
Julie: I rarely listen to music through the speakers or watch video without using headphones. But yes, I agree that if you want to, the speakers do a good job.
Julie: You know the biggest feature of the iPhone to impress me is the FaceID scanner. I’ve been so used to using a fingerprint scanner all these months that I hated the idea of not having a fingerprint scanner. I thought the face scanner would be similar to the scanner that I remembered on Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and remembered that it wouldn’t work in the dark or with my glasses off. But I’ve been super happy with how fast and accurate the facial scanner on the iPhone Xs Max performs. It’s fantastic whether I have my glasses on, in the dark, or even holding the phone at weird angles. I haven’t missed the fingerprint scanner at all.
Dave: I completely agree, FaceID works very well. I’ve been without a home button for nearly a year and don’t miss it at all. The added screen real estate gained from giving it up is definitely worth the trade. I rarely have an issue with FaceID but I can’t say I never have to type in my passcode.
Julie: I haven’t used a physical home button for the past year either. But that brings up another topic – gestures. Do you like them? I’m not a huge fan of having to swipe up to get back to the home screen. I prefer the virtual home button and back button that Android uses over the swipe up or swipe left to right gestures of iOS. Mainly it’s because I have some issues with my right hand/thumb, so it’s tough for me to do the swipe gestures while holding the phone in my right hand without employing my other hand to perform the gesture.
Dave: After a year of use, I am completely comfortable using gestures to dance around my iPhone. Though I do admit, even with my larger hands, using gestures is easier with the smaller X(s) than it is the Xs Max. I find myself using two hands much more often while using my Max partly cause I do not want to drop the four-figure device but it is just easier/faster/less strain.
Julie: Let’s talk about the camera. You can see some of my sample images below that have not been edited. All in all, I think the Xs Max does a great job in all lighting conditions. The center picture was taken in a really dark restaurant where I needed to use the iPhone’s flashlight to read the menu. It’s got a lot of shadows, but I was surprised that you can see skin tones.
Dave: No matter what smartphone I use, the camera is THE most important feature for me. Not only do I use it for capturing moments of fun, family, and friends but for my review work here @the-Gadgeteer. I abandoned my digital SLR and high-end point-and-shoot cameras long ago, replaced by my iPhone. And have never looked back. That said, best I can tell from limited use this week, the Xs Max is excellent, just as good as the original X…probably/most likely better but time will tell.
Julie: I’m in the same boat as far as no longer using a DSLR. If the phone doesn’t have a great camera, then I won’t consider buying it. That’s why I love my Pixel 2 XL But that said, I have been using the Huawei P20 for 99% my review product shots since I got it.
Julie: I also love the goofy little things that iOS 12 added to the camera that turns me into a giant headed cartoon character!
Dave: OK, the irritating part of Julie’s giant headed cartoon pic…I can’t figure out how to create one of myself (even though Julie tried to explain it to me). Should be intuitive to a longtime iOS user correct??? Now I grant you I haven’t spent all that much time trying nor have I researched how to do it…but still.
Dave: The new addition I like best in iOS 12 is the Screen Time feature that tracks not only how much you use your device but breaks down that time by the type of consumption (social media, gaming, productivity, etc) and/or individual apps. This feature can combine all your devices use (iPhone & iPad) or share data across family members (so parents can better stalk their kids).
Julie: What do you think about battery life on the Xs Max? I have been really happy with it. I’ve been able to go more than a day between charges which is usually not typical with my phone usage patterns.
Dave: I found the battery life on the iPhone X to be good and on the Xs Max to be impressive. I use my smartphone a lot during the average day and I have yet to drop below 50%.
Julie: I’ve also been happy with the phone’s snappy performance too. I haven’t noticed any problems launching or switching between apps. Everything is smooth as butter.
Dave: Yep, zero complaints here. The iPhone X was zippy and I believe the Max is just a hint faster/smoother. But considering how much the Xs Max costs, I would expect nothing less.
Julie: Dave loves his iPhone Xs Max and for me, it’s the same story as last year… I love the hardware, but it’s several little things that keep me from wanting to fully commit to switching back to the iPhone/iOS. Some of those little things are lack of an always-on display for time and notifications, no iMessages app for Windows computers, and the navigation gestures. I thought Dave was going to start crying when he saw my iMessages chat color change from blue to green yesterday. But of course, we’ll be revisiting this saga again next year with the iPhone Y or whatever Apple decides to call it.
Dave: Or better yet the Y Max Plus…alright all kidding aside, I have zero buyers regret. I’m very pleased with the iPhone Xs Max and my purchase. Granted it is excessively expensive but for those folks living in the Apple world who can afford it, you will not be disappointed. Especially for those who own a Plus device where there is little to no size differential, the upgrade will be well worth it. And lastly, Julie sticking with Android enables me to live vicariously thru her as she tries the latest and greatest Android devices. We chat about many of those over the year and I’m often tempted but quickly/eventually come to my senses.
Julie: What about all of you out there? Loving your iPhone Xs Max? Did you switch from Android to a new iPhone? Let us know your thoughts.
