Celebrating the life and humor of Stephen Hawking – see the Quantum Chess showdown with Paul Rudd

Stephen Hawking, a renowned theoretical physicist, and well-known author passed away on March 14, 2018. He may have been one of the more famous and brilliant scientists of our time, but isn’t it wonderful to know that he had a fabulous sense of humor? It makes him a bit more human to the rest of us.

I thought it would be nice to celebrate him and his humor by sharing a video released two years ago of the epic Quantum Chess match between him and Ant Man‘s Paul Rudd. The video is narrated by Keanu Reeves and directed by Alex Winter (from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure). Whether you are seeing it for the first time or this is your umpteenth time, it is thoroughly entertaining.

Quantum Chess is a real game and was created by Chris Cantwell, a University of Southern California graduate student. He created a Kickstarter campaign back in early 2016 to help get Quantum Chess out to the public to encourage people everywhere that “anyone can quantum”. Read his story here. You can find out more about Quantum Chess and get early access to the game ($9.99) by clicking on this link.

There also appears to be a couple of other Quantum Chess games available through Apple’s App Store and Google Play, just in case you want to check them out…

The Oregon Trail Handheld Game brings you dysentery on-the-go

The Oregon Trail handheld game

It’s an 80’s classroom nostalgia trip in a pocket-sized package! In this handheld version of the classic Oregon Trail, hunt for food, trade with settlers and ford dangerous rivers as you attempt the 19th-century trek from Missouri to Oregon’s lush Willamette Valley.

This game was a treat to play in elementary school, though I think the only thing I learned from it was that I was glad to be shooting at pixelated buffalo instead of contracting cholera in the back of a covered wagon. Playing Oregon Trail is literally all this thing can do, but it might be a fun gift to pick up for a fan of the original game or to inflict digital snakebites, broken limbs and diseases on a new generation.

The game features all the required buttons to make decisions and hunt for food, as well as authentic 80’s sound and graphics. The description on Target’s website lists the difficulty of this game as “easy,” but if memory serves me, I only remember actually finishing this game a handful of times, so your mileage may vary, literally.

You can pick up the Handheld Oregon Trail game exclusively at Target, in-store or online for $25.

Everyone has a fun new part-time job with HQ Trivia

HQ Trivia is a new app available for iPhones and Androids that has the population going berserk.

It’s a live game show, where the winners of the 12 question trivia match split actual money! Currently, the usual amount up for division is $2,500, but it has been as high as $18,000! Depending on the difficulty level of the questions, people have individually won from $1 to $6,000. The creators of the game say that they hope to increase the prize winnings to $1,000,000 someday.

HQ Trivia is a trusted game; the winnings are given to the victorious via Paypal.

Doesn’t this sound AWESOME? That’s probably because this product comes from the brilliant creators of … wait for it … Vine! Remember those silly seven second loops? Yes, HQ Trivia was created by those guys!

The live game airs at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays and only once at 9 p.m. on weekends. Usually, about 1 million people sign on and participate in the fun. Download the app and start your fun new part-time job, now!

This $775 deck of cards is made of marble

Check out this deck of cards from Mikol. You might remember this company from their marble notebook that I reviewed almost 2 years ago. Now they are back with a deck of playing cards that are made of marble. Yes, stone playing cards. They are the same thickness as a credit card and feature laser etched graphics. Although the price for a deck of these cards would probably make any buyer resist actually playing with them, the cards are durable and can be dropped without breaking. $775 though. OUCH. Still interested in adding a deck to your collection? Head over to Mikol for all the details.

Playing cards for your EDC

Air Deck is a set of playing cards that have been created with travelers in mind. The 3.43 x 1.26 inch deck of cards is around half the size of a traditional deck of cards and is made of waterproof PVC so you don’t have to worry about spilling a beverage on them during a heated match of Slap Jack.

The cards are designed to last for years of card game fun and are tear, scratch, and bend resistant. They are sized just right for a quick game of Rummy on an airplane tray table, or a game of Euchre on the beach.

Air Deck was a successfully funded Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign and now these casino quality cards are available to everyone. You can read more about them and order a pack for $10.71 from Amazon.
