Make perfect rice in your microwave with Sistema

NEWS – My husband can make perfect rice on the stovetop, but I always seem to end up with rice “soup” unless I use a rice cooker.  The problem with the big rice-cooking appliance is that we don’t eat rice very often, but we need to set aside a lot of precious cabinet space in our small kitchen to store that appliance.  We could save a lot of cabinet space by replacing our rice cooker with the Sistema Microwave Rice Cooker.

The rice cooker is made of 100% virgin plastic that is both phthalate- and BPA-free.  It is designed to cook rice, polenta, and couscous in the microwave. The rice steamer minimizes mess in the microwave with a pressure-chamber plate that collects overflow and then drains it back into the base chamber. It also comes with a lid with cool-to-touch, easy-lift tabs and a nonstick rice spoon for serving.

The Sistema rice cooker is top-rack dishwasher-safe and fridge- and freezer-safe.  It holds 87.2 ounces / 2.6 liters, and measures 8.5″ x 7.7″ x 6.3″.  The Sistema Microwave Rice Cooker is $12.93 at Amazon.

Make bananas more disgusting than they already are

I’ve never liked bananas. It’s a texture thing. And a flavor thing. Ok, it’s everything! Ick with a capital I. But hey, if you like the mushy yellow fruit, then more power to ya and here’s a way to make your bananas even better (I think). It’s called the Banana Surprise and it’s a kit that will let you inject your banana (queue jokes…) with honey, chocolate syrup, strawberry sauce, and other drippy liquidy fillings. I am feeling a bit nauseous just thinking about it.

This little girl looks happy about the fact that her banana has what looks like blood oozing out of it. I think a sight like this might scar a kid for life, but if you don’t think so, you can get your own Banana Surprise kit for $26.74 from Amazon.

The Avocado Sock quickly ripens avocados in the cutest way possible

NEWS – Buying avocados is never an exact science. You either choose one that’s overripe or not ripe enough. And waiting for an avocado to ripen is never ideal. The Avocado Sock (that’s right I said sock) was made to quickly and perfectly ripen the little green fruit.

The sock is made from pure 100% Shetland wool that’s sourced from a 200-year old woolen mill in Scotland. Pure wool is used because of its natural lanolin. And the dark and warm environment is ideal for helping the avocado ripen.

Just insert an unripened avocado in the small, cute, wool sock and place it in a warm, dry place. Gently sealing it with the drawstring allows it to ripen in as little as 24 hours. It also reduces bruising and damage.

The sock can also be used to ripen other fruits and vegetables.

The Avocado Sock comes in 3 different colors, Nutmeg, Pewter, and Olive and is available from The Grommet.

Ovie Smarterware tells you when your food is about to spoil

NEWS – Do you have science experiments growing in your refrigerator? Do you throw away food before its time because you just don’t want to risk it? Ovie’s Smarterware was developed to help us clean up our refrigerators, take the guess-work out of our food storage dilemma, waste less food, and save money.

Smarterware is a food storage system that works with Alexa and is made up of Ovie smart tags, Ovie lids and containers (6 cup capacity, made of BPA free Tritan plastic), Ovie clips, Ovie connects (which adhere to other containers), an Ovie hub, and the Ovie app. By pressing on the button on the Ovie tag, you can tell Alexa the identity of the item (or you can use the app to identify the item without Alexa). It then retrieves the food storage information from the Ovie database using the Ovie hub, thus starting the countdown. After that, you can place the Ovie tag in either the Ovie lid of the Ovie container, in the clip to affix to bagged food, or in the Ovie Connect to adhere to the top of any other food container.

The tags have LED light rings to indicate how old the stored food is. If the tag is green, then the food was recently opened or tagged. If it is yellow, it is halfway to its expiration date at which point it sends you a notification using the app. And if it is red, it is probably no longer safe to eat.

The app also allows you to search for recipes based on the food you’ve tagged.

The Ovie Smarterware food storage system is a preorder item (it was a Kickstarter project) and the estimated delivery date of current orders is February 2019. You may purchase any combination of the Smarterware items from Ovie. The basic “3-SmartTag Kit” (3 Ovie SmartTags, 3 Smarterware Universal Connectors, 1 Ovie Hub) sells for $95.

The Pistachio Pedestal is an elegant solution for storing discarded shells

NEWS – Who doesn’t like pistachios? Absolutely no one, that’s who. Let’s face it the little green nuts themselves are great, but the shells, not so much. Unless you have the Pistachio Pedestal.

The Pistachio Pedestal is a two-tiered solid wood pistachio server designed to offer a solution for storing discarded shells.

Aside from being very handy, the Pistachio Pedestal is quite elegant. It’s routed from solid North American Maple and then hand sanded. And it’s smooth food-safe finish comes from teak oil.

The top tier holds up to 8 oz of whole nuts and even features a pistachio-green colored rim. While the lower, broader level is where you stash the shells. No more fumbling for a makeshift discard dish for leftover debris.

The two tiers also come apart, making it easy to dispose of the discarded shells.

The Pistachio Pedestal sells for $48 and is available on uncommongoods.
