The rechargeable battery is good for 6 hours of display.  It recharges with a magnetic quick-connect cable.  Motion graphics display at 5 FPS, and the curved lens enhances and protects the display.

Kaptur is a current Indiegogo project.  The funding period ends in less than two weeks.  The cap is available in two styles: flat visor and strapback.   A pledge of $59 gets you one cap in your choice of style.  Learn more at Indiegogo.

PAWD is a pet crate that doesn’t look like a jail cell

Most pet owners find a crate is a necessary piece of equipment, but most crates are bulky and unattractive.  There are pieces of furniture that do double duty as pet crates, but they can be hard to clean and they certainly aren’t portable for travel use.  Metal crates are portable and easier to clean, but they certainly aren’t attractive.  There’s a new Kickstarter project, the PAWD, that reinvents the pet crate to make it useful and portable while making it more attractive.

The PAWD is described as a baby crib for your fur baby.  When your pet is past the crate-training phase and can be left on his own while you’re out for a while, the door can be opened up and held open by magnets to turn the PAWD into his own little personal space.  The openings in the side are more attractive than metal bars, but they are big enough for airflow and visibility.  It’s made of polypropylene, so it’s easy to clean and never rusts.

If you want to travel with the PAWD, the sides fold down into a flat suitcase-shape with a built-in handle.  It’s half the weight of the metal cages, so it’s easier to transport.  But be aware that the PAWD is not intended as a pet carrier.

For the product introduction, the PAWD is only being made in one size.  It’s 21″ long x 15.8″ wide x 16″ tall, which is suitable for dogs up to the size of a smaller pug (13-17 pounds, 10-14 inches tall), and it works for most cats and smaller animals like rabbits and ferrets.  It’s available in pink, white, or gray, and matching beds are available.

There are a few early bird specials still available for a PAWD for $69 or a PAWD plus bed for $89.  The funding goal has already been exceeded, but there are still about 24 days left for you to get a PAWD at a discount off the $120 MSRP.  The funding period ends Fri, April 6, 2018 at 2:39 PM EDT.  Shipping is expected in December 2018.  Learn more and make your pledge at Kickstarter.

Protect your iPhone X with the Mod-3 Radius X ultra-minimal case

A couple of years ago, The Gadgeteer reviewed the Mod-3 Radius case for iPhone 5, and Andy Chen found it was a “super-sleek, minimal way to protect your iPhone 5 while preserving the sleek modern lines and feel of a ‘naked’ iPhone.”  Well, Mod-3 is back again with a Radius case for the iPhone X.  They are currently seeking funding for the Radius X case.

Just like the one Andy reviewed, the Radius X will mostly protect the corners of the phone with precision-crafted corner modules that don’t touch the touchscreen.  The corner modules are held in place by an aircraft-grade aluminum X structure that covers the back of the iPhone X.  The corner pieces are filled with a proprietary impact-resistant material for extra drop protection, and the pieces keep your screen off the surface if you lay the phone face-down on a table.  And no worries about charging, because the Radius X doesn’t interfere with wireless charging of the iPhone X.

There’s another month of fundraising for the Radius X case.  Pledge $69.00 to receive one Radius X case.  There’s also a gold-plated version for a pledge of $193.00, and there are discounts for multiple cases.  The campaign has already reached 149% of its funding goal, but you still have time to get in on a discounted case.  Shipment is expected for May 2018.  Make a pledge and secure a Mod-3 Radius X case at Indiegogo.

Leave your smartphone behind with the Light Phone 2

Modern smartphones have basically become the equivalent of someone tapping you on the shoulder every 10 seconds. If you don’t meticulously manage app notifications, your phone quickly devolves into a hyperactive toddler of a distraction machine. Sometimes, you’d love to just chuck it into the deepest pocket of your backpack, but what if someone really needs to get a hold of you?

The Light Phone 2 is a barebones, “secondary” 4G phone with an e-ink display that piggybacks off of your existing mobile number to serve as a basic communication device. No social media, no email, no distractions. Just basic voice and text messages in a simple typographic-based operating system. The Brooklyn-based creators call the experience of leaving your smartphone behind and pocketing this device instead “going light.” Hence the phone’s name.

That e-ink display, though. Yum.

The Light Phone 2 is an updated, improved predecessor of the original Light Phone which had roughly 10,000 users. It’s currently in prototype stage, but as of today it is 328% funded on Indiegogo and slated for an April 2019 release.

You can fund the team’s efforts and get a Light Phone 2 of your own (next year) for $250. Visit their Indiegogo page for more details.

Ko-Axis Rail Pen, a raincoat in your wallet, fidget toys, and more – Notable crowdfunding campaigns

This week we are bringing you five crowdfunding campaigns that are currently running on Kickstarter. This week’s campaigns are for people interested in EDC gear like wallets, pens, bags, and more. Check out our picks for this week’s notable crowdfunding campaigns.

Ko-Axis™ Rail Pen

What is it?
The Ko-Axis is a flat pen designed by TEC Accessories.

Why do I like it?
I like the Ko-Axis because it has a unique design, won’t roll off your desk, and doesn’t require any special tools to change standard D1 refills. It also uses magnets to extend and retract the writing tip. I love anything that uses magnets, so… I’m also a fan of products from TEC Accessories, so I know they are a company you can trust to deliver rewards when they say they will.

Where can I find more info?
The Ko-Axis Rail Pen campaign ends on 3/29/2018 and they have already met funding goal of $7,500. You can pre-order a Ko-Axis Rail Pen starting at $49. After the Ko-Axis Rail Pen campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in July 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

The NOMATIC Messenger and Laptop Bags

What is it?
NOMATIC is a brand of messenger and laptop bags.

Why do I like it?
I like the NOMATIC messenger and laptop bags because they look sharp, have a lot of built-in features that let you easily carry your EDC, and they have a really cool shoulder strap mechanism that uses magnets which if you read about the campaign above, I really like. The Messenger (the one I’m really interested in) can stand up when placed on a flat surface, has a reconfigurable interior, is airport friendly with a pass through on the back to attach the bag to your rolling luggage, and a dedicated laptop holder that makes it TSA compliant.

Where can I find more info?
The NOMATIC campaign ends on 4/21/2018 and they have blown way past their funding goal of $100,000. You can pre-order a NOMATIC starting at $119. After the NOMATIC campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in August 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

SonarPen: World’s most affordable Smart Pen for iPads

What is it?
The SonarPen is an inexpensive active stylus for your favorite iPad (and has some support for Android and Windows tablets too) and iPhone.

Why do I like it?
I like the SonarPen stylus because it doesn’t require batteries that need to be replaced or charged because it plugs directly into the 3.5mm audio jack to draw power. If you are using the SonarPen with an iPhone that doesn’t have an audio jack, you can use a lightning adapter that’s provided with the SonarPen. The pen doesn’t require a Bluetooth connection either and can detect different pressure levels.

Where can I find more info?
The SonarPen campaign ends on 3/23/2018 and they have already more than met their funding goal of $25,546. You can pre-order a SonarPen starting at $25. After the SonarPen campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in June 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

VORTECON- Kinetic desk toy with mesmerizing motion

What is it?
The VORTECON fidget spinning desk toy made of solid stainless steel, brass or copper.

Why do I like it?
I like the VORTECON because it creates an optical illusion of a continuously spinning helix design on the side that looks hypnotic and soothing.

Where can I find more info?
The VORTECON campaign ends on 3/28/2018 and they have met their funding goal of $2,791. You can pre-order a VORTECON starting at $32. After the VORTECON campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in June 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Raincard – The First Credit Card sized raincoat

What is it?
The Raincard is a full-size raincoat that has been compressed down to the size of a credit card that can fit in your wallet or your pocket.

Why do I like it?
I like the Raincard because it’s so small that you can easily add one to your EDC with little to no additional bulk. The only downside is that it’s pretty much a one use type of product since you won’t be able to fold it back down into the same form factor. But the right side is that you get 10 Raincards with the lowest price pledge amount.

Where can I find more info?
The Raincard campaign ends on 3/24/2018 and they are still working towards their funding goal of $6,636. You can pre-order a Raincard starting at $11 for 10 Raincards. After the VRaincard campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in August 2018. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.
