Adonit Auto-Clamping Wireless Car Charger review

REVIEW – Almost every state in the USA now has laws prohibiting the handheld use of cell phones while driving. As a result, the marketplace has been flooded with auto mounts of various designs that hold your cell phone within reach and many offer wired or wireless charging as a feature. The Adonit Auto-Clamping Wireless Car Charger is a part of this very crowded field. Let’s see if it stands out as better than the rest.

What is it?

The Adonit Auto-Clamping Wireless Car Charger is a dashboard/windshield/vent mount for your cell phone that offers easy access to your phone and charges your phone while it is in the mount.

What is in the box

On the back of the charging unit, there is a ball mount that allows you to mount either the Air Vent Clip or the Windshield/Dashboard mounting arm.

The dashboard/windshield mount includes the ball mount on an extension arm that allows you to move the charging base and therefore the phone closer or further away from you. At the base of the mount, there is the suction mount pad and the mechanism to depress or lift to secure or remove the suction mount to or from the surface in the car. There is also a knob at the side that allows you to raise or lower the extension arm.

At the bottom of the charging unit, there it the micro USB port that you plug the micro USB cable into to provide power to the unit and to the left of that port is a LED that shines green when the unit is receiving power and a phone is in the mount.

On the face of the charging unit/cell phone holder, there is the Qi wireless charging interface in the middle and an infrared sensor at the bottom that allows the unit to detect when a phone is near so that it opens and closes the securing arms.

On the lower left side of the charging unit, there is a silver touchpad that when touched triggers the arms to open so that you can remove the phone.

The DC power adapter plug has 2 ports, a quick charge 3.0 port, and a 3.1A port and a blue LED light around its surface.

Performance

The Adonit Auto-Clamping Wireless Car Charger performs as expected. As you can see in the pictures below, I use the mount on my dashboard. While I did quickly test the air vent mount and can confirm that it does clamp onto the vent louver as it is designed to do, I absolutely despise air vent mounts and chose to use the dashboard mount since I have other devices mounted to my windshield. The mount with the phone it is very stable even when driving on rough surfaces. So far, the phone has never dislodged from the base unit. The one issue that I have with it is that the infrared sensor in the base unit is very sensitive and even when I am sitting back in my seat, it will at times detect me or some movement and the arms will repeatedly open and close even though I am not attempting to mount a phone. The arms also make a very annoying squeaking sound when moving. In terms of charging my phone, I usually have varying amounts of charge remaining on my battery phone when I place it in the mount, and I have never tested the charging when my phone battery is completely drained. However, I am very impressed at how quickly this mount charges my iPhone 10 XS Max.

What I like

  • The build quality
  • The grip of the securing arms
  • The wireless charging feature’
  • The sturdy dashboard/windshield mount
  • The overall appearance

What can be improved

  • The sensitivity of the sensor that controls the gripping arms so that it does not activate so easily and from so far away
  • Possible the addition of a baseplate for the bottom of the phone to rest on

Final thoughts

This dash mount/windshield mount wireless charger works well and I have been using it continuously since the day I opened the box. I was concerned that with just 2 side arms/clamps and no baseplate to hold the phone, that it would fall when driving on bumpy roads or in the case of a sudden stop. So far, it has proven me wrong and has held strong. Only time will tell if continuous use reduces the clamping power and grip on the phone. Other than the overly sensitive sensor for the automatic arms that grip the phone, this charger is well made and a good buy.

HQBKING Dashcam review

REVIEW – It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed a dashcam and this one from HQBKING caught my interest because the windshield mount is magnetic and you can rotate the camera 360 degrees. But what’s the video like? Let’s find out.

What is it?

The HQBKING is a 1080P dashcam that features a mount that allows you to remove and/or rotate the camera while it’s attached to the mount which also provides power to the camera.

Hardware Specification

Picture Resolution: 4032*3024/3648*2736/3264*2448/2592*1944

Memory Card: Support 8GB – 64GB high speed TF card Class 10 or above
Chip-set: NTK96658
Sensor: SONY IMX323
Screen: 1.54 inch
Video Format: MP4
Picture Format: JPG
USB Type: USB2.0
Frequency: 50HZ/60HZ
Current: 450mA
Mic/Speaker: Support
Storage Temperature(Deg.C): -30 to +120
Battery: 140mAh 3.7V lithium battery
Power Supply Port: USB2.0 DC5V 1A
Power Size: 2 inch (width) x 1.8 inch (height) x 1.5 inch (depth)

What’s in the box?

  • Hqbking dash cam
  • Magnetic mount
  • 12V power adapter
  • 2 mini USB cables
  • User Manual

Design and features

This dashcam is one of the smallest dashcams that I’ve reviewed in a long time if not ever. The camera itself is about the size of a golf ball. The front is basically just the lens and the top has an electrical contact that mates with the magnetic mount/pins on the windshield mount.

The windshield mount comes with two 3M adhesive strips that you’ll use to affix the mount to your car’s windshield.

The camera can rotate on the mount without losing power. This will let you film the interior of the car or out the sides of the car.

While you can rotate the camera around in the horizontal plane, you can’t adjust the vertical angle of the camera which can be a problem if you’re trying to record people inside the camera as you can’t adjust the lens to make sure it’s pointed correctly.

On the left side of the camera is the power button, a status LED and a microphone.

On the opposite side of the dashcam is a protective cover over the microSD card slot and a second built-in mini USB connector that can be used to connect the camera to power or transfer video to your computer.

On the bottom of the camera are four buttons that are used navigate through the camera’s menus.

Installation

Installing the HQBKING dashcam in my MINI Cooper was as easy as sticking the mount to the windshield and then routing the mini USB cable from the right side of the camera mount up along the top edge of the headliner and then down the right side of the windshield, down the side of the dash and around to the 12V power adapter.

Once installed, the camera powers on automatically when the car’s engine is started. It then turns off when you stop the engine. You can also set the camera to turn off in 3, 5, or 10 minutes later. But the default it is to turn it off as soon as you shut down the engine.

The camera has a G Sensor which detects if there has been a collision and will lock the video so that it won’t be overwritten by later videos. This feature makes sure that you can find and use the video if you need to for insurance purposes in the event of an accident.

There’s also a smart parking monitor that you can toggle on/off which will make a recording if the camera senses some sort of impact when you’re not driving. Note that you’ll need to have the camera hard-wired for power to use this feature as the camera’s built-in battery isn’t designed to keep it powered on for very long. It’s only designed to protect the settings, time, and date in between uses.

The length of each video clip can be adjusted to 1, 3, or 5-minute clips. Once the microSD card is filled, it will start overwriting the old clips (except for any locked clips).

Mobile app

If you install the HQBKING app on your iOS or Android smartphone, you can use it to connect to the camera’s built-in WiFi signal to see a live footage, view, or transfer video clips and photos to the phone.

See it in action

Here are two quick videos that show you the video quality of this dashcam when used for night and day driving. The first video is night driving with a bit of day driving at the end.

If you skip to the daytime part, you can see where I turn the camera on its magnetic mount. I do this again at the end of the review while driving.

As you can see, the video quality is ok for a 1080P camera. Of course I’d like 4K quality video, but all things considered, you can read road signs and some license plates depending on the proximity to other cars.

What I like

  • Small
  • Magnetic mount
  • Ability to rotate the camera 360 degrees on the mount

What needs to be improved

  • Needs a way to adjust the vertical angle of the camera
  • Needs GPS capability built-in

Final thoughts

I’ve enjoyed testing the HQBKING dashcam. I like its small size and how easy it is to grab it and take it in the house to connect to my MacBook if I want to transfer video clips. I find this easier and faster than using the HQBKING app with my phone. As a dashcam, it works fine. Video quality didn’t blow my mind, but it gets the job done and the price pretty low.

Restrain your big dog properly in the car with the Big Dog Seat Belt

NEWS – Dwayne Caruth spent 10 years as a firefighter/EMT, and he saw far too many dogs injured or killed because they were improperly restrained during a car accident.  He was inspired to find a better way to protect dogs in the car after an accident he responded to where the driver was alive and in relatively good shape after her vehicle rolled twice, but her dog, who had been buckled into the back seat, was missing.  The back window was broken out, there were signs that the dog had been injured, but the dog was never found.

He found that the harnesses that clip the dog to the car’s seatbelt or to a tether in the car left the bottom two-thirds of a dog, especially big dogs 35+ pounds, unrestrained in an accident and free to keep moving and cause a severe shock or whiplash type of injury.  The travel harness styles found in pet stores are designed to keep a dog in a seat in a controlled environment, with the dog sitting in a certain manner, not standing or lying down.  These products aren’t regulated or tested for safety in the US.

Big Dog Seat Belts are designed to support the chest, shoulders, ribs, and torso, protecting more of the dog simultaneously during an accident or hard braking event.  The Big Dog Seat Belt secures the animal using the OEM seat belt in your vehicle, protecting the dog while allowing it to sit at an angle or to lie down.  Big Dog Seat Belts are both strength- and crash-tested to simulate a 110 pound dog involved in a 30mph frontal crash scenario (over 3310 pounds of momentum force).  No other company on the planet has passed this testing.

Most of the travel harnesses/restraints you see in a pet store are made of webbing, but Big Dog Seat Belts are made of top-quality, 2″ automotive seat belt webbing.  Seat belt webbing will stretch during impact, reducing the kinetic energy of the accident by 20%.  Automotive belting is tested to over 6000 pounds during an accident; a 75 pound dog in a 35mph crash has 3075+ pounds of momentum force and a 110 pound dog has over 4500 pounds of force.  Actual seat belting material has the strength to protect your big dog.

Each Big Dog Seat Belt is custom built to your dog’s size and weight.  The normal price is $119.00, but you can order for $99.00 right now.  Get out your tape measure and order a custom fit seat belt for your dog (35 pounds minimum) at the Big Dog Seat Belts website.

Choetech Desk Charger and Car Charger review

REVIEW – As the market for wireless (primarily Qi-compatible) chargers heats up, I’m starting to enjoy the benefits of this technology. I was sent a different brand wireless car charger a good while back, but am always interested in testing the approach other makers use. I was recently sent two items from Choetech: their desk USB-C wireless charger, and their car dash model with the suction cup. (They also make a car model with a vent clip.) I’ve added them to my life, and am ready to report!

Note: Photos may be tapped or clicked for a larger image.

CHOETECH Desk Charger

What is it?

The first item is the wireless charging stand. This has a USB-C connection and has nothing but the bottom rail to hold your phone up. I put it on my desk, and it’s been nothing short of fantastic. Before when I would plug my phone in mid-day to get the charge topped off, I would have to find a good place to put it. Amid the soda can, coffee cup, and my usual desk items, there wasn’t really a good place for it to sit. But this stand not only gives it a reserved seat, but it also doesn’t require two hands to put down or pick up. And I don’t have to worry about it getting charged up too quickly because the stand and the phone discuss safe charging practices.

Hardware specs

  • Intelligently identify charge models – fast wireless charge up to 10W for the Samsung Galaxy S9, S9 Plus, S8, S8 Plus, Note 9, Note 8, S7, S7 edge, S6 edge+, 7.5W wireless charging for iPhone x/ XS/ XS Max/ XR/ 8/ 8 Plus ( QC2.0/3.0 adapter needed for fast charge) and 5W standard wireless charge for All Qi-enabled phones.
  • High-efficiency charging stand – built-in 2 coils fast wireless charger stand allows to charge cell phones vertically or horizontally and provide you with a more flexible choice for reading, listening to music, watching a video or work sessions.
  • Case friendly design – our wireless charger can identify your phone sensitive and support phone case within 5mm(0.2 inch) while 4mm(0.16 inch) is the best wireless charging distance (please Note that metal attachments or credit cards will interfere with charging ).
  • Sleep-friendly&safe protection – built-in intelligent indicator shows you charging status, extremely soft Green LED light for well sleeping without distraction during sleeping at night, multi-protection system for all-around protection against over-charging, over-voltage, over temperature and over-current, provide a safe charge to protect your devices.

What’s in the box?

  • 1 x CHOETECH Fast wireless charger stand
  • 1 x 3.3ft USB-C cable
  • 1 x user manual
  • 18-month warranty card

Design and features

The desk stand is a single angle (about 30° from vertical) that has a grooved shelf along the entire width to place the phone in. This allows me to glance at it when notifications come in and easily read it from my position behind the computer keyboard. Since I’m using an iPhone 8 Plus, I don’t have FaceID, so I have to touch it to actually turn the screen on (like an animal!). There is a subtle (in office lighting) green LED that is under the shelf the phone sits in, which does not turn off when charging is done. I think this has something to do with Power Delivery, but I have a simple cable that has such an indicator in it, and it turns off power and the LED when the charge is at 100% on my iOS devices. Not sure why Cloetech has the “remove from the charger when charged” warning for iPhones. This LED would probably make for an irritating bedside table unit. (According to the manufacturer, the light goes out when Android phones are fully charged. Go figure.)

CHOETECH Wireless Car Charger

What is it?

The second item I was sent was the “CHOETECH Wireless Car Charger, USB Type C 7.5W Wireless Car Charging Mount Stand Compatible with iPhone XS Max XR X 8 Plus, 10W Fast Wireless Charging Samsung Galaxy S9/Note 9, 5W for All Qi Enabled.” (Just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?) As the name says, this is a stand-type charger for modern Qi-enabled phones. It has a suction cup which affixes to a smooth surface, and your phone is held tightly by side rails.

What’s in the box?

  • Cradle
  • Stand
  • USB-A to USB-C cable
  • User Manual and warranty card

Design and features

This unit consists of a cradle that connects to a stand via a 4-point keyhole friction lock. The tabs on the lock are mounted to a piece with a ball-joint connection to a mounting stand. This ball joint has full rotation through 360º and tilt/yaw through probably 100º. It’s easy to move yet tightens with a thumbscrew and hold position well. The clutch for the ball joint is on a right angle shaped piece that has a 3” suction cup at the other end. The suction cup is silicone and uses micro-suction to enhance the hold. It also has a lever-activated vacuum enhancement. Due to the 360º rotation, you can easily mount it to the dash or the windscreen and it will stay through rough roads, weather, and all manner of bumps and knocks.

The rear of the cradle has two buttons – one at the top that actuated the side rails, and another at the bottom that releases the bottom spring-loaded rail that adjusts the lower wide of your phone. This lets you tune it to the sweet spot for charging. I found touching the top button releases the side rails just barely, which allows the phone to be removed one-handed. (Well, once I unplugged in the audio cable. I don’t have a BlueTooth infotainment system yet – but the holidays are coming, right?)

Performance

I found both the car and desk units keep my phone topped up with very little effort on my part. It’s good to have a consistent spot to place my phone at my desk, and it allows me to keep it between the 20%-80% recommended charge easily.

What I Like

  • USB-C connection
  • Light indicates active charging
  • Holds unit solidly to avoid losing connection during charging.

What needs to be improved

  • The car charger is a bit bulky.
  • The desk charger should have a way to turn off or cover the charging light.

Final thoughts

Wireless charging is fairly new to Apple product users. It was first introduced with the iPhone 7, which for me was an off year. I had bought the iPhone 6s less than a year before it was released and was very happy with it – and the thought of doing without a headphone port was scary back then. (Still is aggravating, but I understand the tradeoffs and don’t have the animosity some of my friends still bear.) So the 8 Plus that I’ve had for the past year is my first and only item with Qi. Recently, my Lovely Bride left her iPhone 6 on the roof of her car as she left the parking garage. Needless to say, it needed to be replaced when she finally recovered it after several cars ran over it. So her iPhone 8 is another unit using wireless charging. It’s time to get serious. I even invested in a wireless unit for her bedside table. These units from Choetech are not that much more expensive, but with USB-C and PD, they are going to last longer and do a better job than the low-cost knock-offs.

resqme Quick Escape Car Tool

We’ve had a lot of rain this year, which has lead to a lot of flooding in North Carolina.  And that, of course, means a few people end up in their cars in the flood waters.  When your car is in water, you need to get out immediately.  The resqme tool can help you escape by quickly and easily breaking out your window and cutting through your seatbelt.

You carry the resqme tool on your keychain, so it’s always at hand and you won’t need to search for it in the glove compartment or center console.  If you need it, you can quickly yank it off your keychain, then press the tool firmly against your side window to break it.  A built-in blade slices through a jammed seatbelt.  It should be on the keychain of every driver you know.

While you’re at the resqme website getting your car resqme tools, check out the prepareme kits.  These kits are packed in a small tote bag to keep everything clean and together.  Each bag is stocked with some first aid items and a crank flashlight, and every bag comes with one resqme tool.  Some bags also include other tools from the resqme company, such as their sensor that hangs on your ear and alarms if you begin to fall asleep.

Every car you own should have one of these kits, either in the trunk, glove compartment, or even under your seat.  And getting one provides you or one of your gift recipients with a resqme rescue tool as well.

Quick Removal Windshield Snow Tarp

If winter won’t go away and take the ice and snow with it, you can at least keep it off your car’s windshield with the Quick Removal Windshield Snow Tarp.  The tarp measures 79″ wide X 47.5″ long X 1/8″ thick (56″ wide excluding the flaps), so it’s big enough to cover the windshield of most cars and trucks.  To use, you just spread it over your windshield and close the side flaps in the front doors of your car.  The tarp also has seven magnets sewn between layers of fabric to hold it in place on your car without scratching the finish.  It’s long enough that it covers and protects the wipers and the washer fluid nozzles, too.  Instead of having to waste time and gas running the defroster while you scratch away at the built-up ice and mounds of snow, you just open up the doors and flip the snow away.  The tarp folds up to fit in a pouch that you can store in the glove compartment of your car.  When winter’s over, the Quick Removal tarp will also work as a sun shield to keep the cabin of your car a little cooler.

Kurgo Heather Dog Bench Seat Cover

If you have a dog and travel with them, you know they are going to get your car seats covered in hair and any dirt they manage to get into, as well.  If you have leather upholstery, you can probably add scratches to list the damages. What you need is some sort of sturdy covering to protect your seats, and it needs to stay in place so Fideaux doesn’t pull it into a tiny ball in the footwell, where it isn’t protecting anything.

Chewy, an online pet supply store, has a nice waterproof and stain-resistant bench seat cover that will protect your backseat.  The Kurgo Heather Dog Bench Seat Cover has five attachment points to keep the cover in place and piped edges keep dirt and water from rolling off the cover and onto the carpeting.  Hook-and-loop openings allow you to use seatbelts, for people or pets, and child car seat latches.    It is 55″ wide, which should fit most vehicles.

And since it does allow you to properly install a car seat, perhaps this might be a nice gift for parents of young children, even if they don’t have a dog!  After all, kids can be far messier than pets!

VAVA 2K Dash Cam

Julian Perry reviewed the VAVA 2K dash cam and found it to be one of the best dash cams he had reviewed.  He says the VAVA 2K is a windshield mounted dash cam that records video as you drive and is capable of snapshots, either via the app or by using an optional remote.  This camera is small, compact, and lightweight; it connects magnetically to its mounting base. This type of mount allows you to swivel the camera 360 degrees to record your entire surroundings. It  records in either 2560 x 1440p 30fps QHD or 1920 x 1080p 60fp.  The mounting attaches to the windshield via a suction cup.  The kit comes with a pry bar to help you permanently install the cabling for the camera.

The dash cam has a 320mAh built-in battery that allows the 3-axis G-sensor to activate and start recording footage even in parking mode.  Julian found that each time you hit the brakes suddenly or hit a pothole, the Dash Cam detected it as a possible collision and started an emergency recording. (You do have the option in the settings to set the sensitivity for this action.)  He likes that optional accessories are available, such as the optional GPS module so he can always journal his trips.  He likes the size of the VAVA 2K dash cam, the versatility of the magnetic mount, the available video resolutions, the built-in battery, the parking mode option, and the quality of the recordings.

WeatherTech custom-fit mats and liners

I usually have carpeted floor mats in my car, but I like to use rubber mats during the winter to protect the car from snow, ice, and the red clay our region is notorious for.  Sure, you can go to big box stores and purchase universal-fit floor mats, but they never seem to fit any car I’ve ever had.

WeatherTech offers custom-fit protective floor mats, cargo/trunk liners, and other products for cars.  You’ll need to enter the year/make/model of the car, then you’ll see the custom-fit products available for it.  When looking at the FloorLiner for my car, I could choose front row only, 2nd-row seats only, or both.  Those lighter mats should work for our mild winters, but if you experience more extreme weather, check out the all-weather floor mats.

Price: price varies with make/model/year of your car.  Front and rear floor mats for my car is about $170

Raven Connected Car Device

Julian reviewed this product, and he tells us that it’s a dash cam plus much more!  The Raven Connected Car Device is connected to your car’s OBD connector. On the front, there is a display screen and an in-cabin camera hidden/embedded behind the clear surface; the back of the Raven has the front-facing camera.  The bottom of the device has an adjustable mount, a micro SD card slot for on-board recording, a micro USB port for direct connection and the ability to download videos from the SD card without removing it from the device, and a “Sim” slot that is not currently used.

As you drive, Raven’s display screen shows your current speed, though Julian noticed it differed from his car’s display by about 1mph.  Julian says these are the things he likes about the Raven:  “Having the ability to view my car when it is parked at the railroad station and in the garage or on the street is great, and the alerts are also great. Having that kind of heads-up display that gives me the option to view various parameters is a plus, and while my truck does have the navigation, having a second option is just a bonus. For my personal use, I can’t say enough about how much I like this device. I have actually replaced what was my favorite dash cam with the Raven. Each person has their personal preference, so keeping that in mind, I give the Raven a big two thumbs up!! LiftMaster WLED Garage Door Opener

From Julie: I know a garage door opener isn’t normally considered a cool gift idea, but having just reviewed this device, I can tell you, that it’s a great addition to my garage. The ultra bright LED lights automatically come on when I enter the garage and the smart features allow me to control or see the status of the door using my phone from anywhere in the world.

From my review which you can read in its entirety by clicking the link below:

The LiftMaster WLED garage door opener was a product that I didn’t know I needed or wanted until I got one. From the ultra quiet operation, extra light that it provides in my garage, and the fact that I can control the door remotely with my phone and get notified when the door opens provides extra home security benefits, the LiftMaster gets two thumbs up from me.

Price: $450 – $500 (including installation)
